I read somewhere the inspiration for The Pot lyrics came from a friend of Maynard's who was in court on drug charges. The judge chastised the man horribly and threw the book at him. Not long after the judge himself was caught partying with illicit drugs and sex workers.

Loving your perspective on these amazing songs! Tool Army will be here in full effect I can see your channel blowing up you're a very talented person. Not sure if it's been previously mentioned in the other Tool reviews, but they do have a bunch that are meant to be played together. Parabol/Parabola, Disposition/Reflection/Triad "Aka Holy Trinity" to name a couple.
Also when doing Push It make sure to do the studio/album version first, and then the Live Salival one afterwards as they are both very different sounds.
There is also a chain of songs which have deep meanings towards Maynard and his mother. Starting with "Jimmy" (Maynard was born James Keenan) as an 11yr old boy who's mother suffers a brain aneurysm which leaves her in a wheelchair paralyzed, and his dealing with her continued faith in religion. To "Judith" (Her name was Judith Marie) by Maynards other band A Perfect Circle which depicts him a little older and anger telling her her lord did this to her. The next songs are from the 10,000 Days album which the number is connected roughly to time between her paralysis - death, and also roughly the time of Saturn Ascending (More on this in coming songs). The first is called "Wings for Marie (Part 1) and was written by Maynard before his mother passed, and 10, 000 Days (Wings Pt 2) was written after she died.
Keep em coming the #Toolarmy will be here to support you!

I'm going to make an observation that might seem a little stupid, but ....
Coming from a construction family I've seen builders who measure-cut-fasten like an industrial machine. Every cut board fits and joins exactly where it was planned. No wasted effort, no wasted lumber, no rushed motions. Every added piece adds to the completion of the plan in a smart and efficient way.
I think Maynard's vocals are a lot like this. Every tone, inflection and stressed syllable goes exactly where the plan says it should fit, and nothing is over complicated. There is no wasted effort. He is very precise with his voice, and he uses that precision to implement a very well crafted plan.

Song is basically about hipocricy. "Eye Balls deep in muddy waters" is like saying head in the mud.Song utilizes double, triple, and I think even quadrupale entendres. Pot as in marijuana, pot as in pot calling kettle black, maybe even not having a pot to piss in. Kangaroo parts reference something called Kangaroo court in which there is a predetermined income. high referring to both being stoned and being on high horse. There's a lot to unpack in this song

Yeah, even though that isn't what this song is about, this song has reminded me of some of my "customers" at my job delivering pizza. I've worked in food service in the past and been scorned for it too - a few of them almost came to blows with too, because I called them on their hypocrisy. I told them "keep it up and you won't have the service either" and such. They get super offended for being so critical of me, haha. I'm old enough now though, that they tend to back off a bit if I make eye contact with them and actually say something about it. The ones that don't are usually drunk af.
...I guess maybe I'm a little more threatening now, than I was when I was younger and working in one of those jobs. (now, I do it because I love my job, so joke's on them - but I'll still gladly call someone on that crap, gleefully even)

Then a somehow transited ...maybe even totally changed to electronic psychedlic trance genre.. partying and gigging for 15 years.. I always thought this the one for me...
    But...
The world is changing and im coming back home to my original music when i was teenager...and Iam asking myself..hows that possible that i didnt know about this band? It completly fills all my needs.. electric and acoustic natural melodies together with the magic tribal rythms of drumming..
Real masterpiece... Im honestly sure there are no bands that sound similar to these guys...no offence but i try to compare it to the mainstream music industry and to young people who dont really want to understand there could be more...and even better experience...
Last 2 albums completly blowed my mind...

RE 9:33 - One thing to always consider is that Tool doesn't really play with literal lyrics. They often use a "top layer" interpretation that leads to deeper, layered connections in the meanings.
Example: "You must have been high" and "The Pot" have a pretty obvious connotation of marijuana or drugs in general, but then there's "you must have been high" being a condescending phrase used "downward" at people, but here sung condescendingly *upward* and critical of corrupt authority figures "on high" (similar to your interpretation), and so on. "Pot" being the complementing allusion of drugs, and also "the pot calling the kettle black", calling to the previous layer I described about corrupt authority "on high" being condescending downward to the people.
The song "Stinkfist" is another example of Tool doing this, where there's a more obvious "top layer" to the lyrics that is used to play with interpretations that connect in a deeper, more nuanced way than just that surface, "obvious" layer. Often times, they'll **specifically** play with this balance, intentionally being forward, crass, or shocking, despite there clearly being more nuance to the implications. Bearing this concept in mind will undoubtedly help you connect with Tool songs in a variety of different ways. Using that initial "top layer" connection to be the keyhole unlocked that leads you deeper on the trail of a song to find what it means to you. Often times, you'll find that your personal connection layer is different than other people's interpretations from moment to moment, verse to verse, or song to song. It's okay for a song to give you different connections, moment to moment. A song doesn't have to be *one thing* in its entirety. It can be one thing here, and another thing there, only tied together by a thematic whole.
That's the thing about it, though. The music is a tool used to connect. Find your connection with an initial reaction layer, and then spend time with it on your own and let the expanded connections find you.

The important lines in this song to me are the variations of 'the kangaroo done hung the juror with the innocent, hung the guilty with the innocent, be stoned he's guilty as the government'. Kangaroo court, sham trials with an already decided outcome, or one that ignores evidence in favor of emotion. The kangaroo be stoned, I think is in the literal sense as in biblical stoning. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

You are right about the song having a superficial meaning (pot=marijuana) while actually having a deeper core meaning, hypocrisy (pot calling the kettle black). Some people combine the two concepts and say it’s specifically about the hypocrisy of drug law enforcement and incarceration rates in the US because of the references to kangaroo court and “liar/lawyer .. what’s the difference”, but I prefer to think it is more about hypocrisy in general. I’ve never considered it to be about some people looking down on others, but I can see the parallels - so I like your take too! Maynard is good at describing foundational ideas in his lyrics in a general way to allow each listener to draw their own specific takes.

The legal system frowns upon Cannabis use, yet a lot of the lawyers and judges partake on a regular basis. This is what Maynard alludes to, rather than judging stoners in general.
There's millions of people in prison for minor weed offences.

Nah, when someone says "You must be high", they are implying that you must be out of your mind. Because somehow, not being intoxicated means that you are completely sane.

Dont let anyone get you down. I have finally started doing what I want to do instead of what is expected of me. You are obviously a smart and beautiful girl. You are doing just fine. Stick with your gut!

Took 2 years of bass lessons as a kid and kept it with me the best I could since, always keep a tool riff or two for whenever guys tell me to throw something down lol, just such a groovy band. Best way I can describe it is that they make prog listenable. 9/10 times I hate prog bands cause they seem to try and make their songs sound intentionally complicated, but tool just does their thing and it sounds sick (on the other hand you've got meshuggah which does the same thing in a totally different style, you should check them out too if you haven't).

Overall, he's talking about corruption in government, that they are hypocrites, liars, and murderers, which is TRUE...

He does it beautifully by speaking metaphors, and using euphemisms that people have forgotten....

This song is about the kangaroo courts, in which people are tried and given sentences without proper evidence. I forgot where exactly I read about a judge who was sentencing people because of pot possession while the judge himself was a heroin addict. Thus the eyeballs deep in muddy water line. This song could be referencing those cases.

So many great Tool songs out there that range from great sounds (Schism, Jambi) to stuff with a message to decipher (Aenema, Parabol/Parabola, Vicarious) to songs that make you feel great emotions (Wings for Marie pt. 1/10000 days [wings for Marie pt. 2], Right in Two)
If you want to learn a little more about this song, take a moment and look up Kangaroo Courts and how they were used with the war on drugs. Great reaction though, makes me wish I could hear Tool for the first time again. :)

5:54 - Customer to college-age bartender: Get a real job!
College-age bartender to customer: Not happening until I'm done paying my way through college, and my mom and dad don't have a firm that I can get nepotism pay-perks at but - but thanks for your concern.

Love it Aileen - such a great journey to watch you travel! If you like Maynard's one-off scream in this one, listen to "Ticks and Leaches" from one of the best albums in the universe, Lateralus (😉). Another rather vicious message in that one too - Maynard seems to dislike people taking as opposed to giving in that one. But, lots of really raw vocals in it.

I am really loving watching your Tool journey. I would like to recommend the trilogy of songs Maynard wrote for his mother. a lot of people believe that there are only 2 songs written about his mother but there are three he made Judith with A Perfect Circle and then Wings for Marie (Part 1) and 10000 Days (Wings for Marie Part 2). If you could react to them on that order I believe it conveys the best message. Thanks 🙏

Please don't ever feel confused or scared from giving your opinion. Maynard has stated in the past that one of the reasons they did not include lyrics in the CD was 2-fold. 1 - The lyrics are just another form of instrumentation that adds to the music, and also he stated that no matter what meaning he had in writing the lyrics it does not matter, because once those lyrics hit our ears it provokes different emotions in all of us. He has said that any of their songs could have different meanings to everyone who listens to them. Please continue with Tool. They like Nightwish....your favorite song is the last song you listened to. I recommend Grudge and Vicarious.

The "must be high" lines are not literal; as he says at a couple of points he was basically saying, "you must have been out of your mind." Like when someone starts judging you and you're like, "GTFO of here, you must be high or crazy talking to me like that!"
