Omg how in the world have I never watched your videos till now? I loved everything, from how you edited your video, to separate reviews, your book choices, everything really. Beautiful work.
I think it's an okay book (3/5 stars), but...yeah, it's not that amazing. There are a lot of parts where Reid "explains" what happened at a certain point of time instead of writing it out, and it comes off as lazy. It was a quick and easy read, but as a whole, Reid's books are just "average" for me.
I’m Korean viewer of your TH-cam! I found that your video is good for English listening because your pronunciation is clear and slow. I’m traning my listening with your video. Thanks for good video! I love it
Because of your recommendations I’ve now read “I’m thinking of ending things” and “The Whisper Man” and I loved both of them. I just bought “Miracle Creek” and can’t wait to read it. You’re now my go-to for book recommendations! Keep the great content coming!
I picked up a copy of Roadside Picnic after seeing your earlier video and loved it as much as you did. That ending was amazing. Stalker has been a favourite film of mine for some time and I never thought of reading the book until your glowing review. Thanks for bringing it into my world!
I'm reading the shining for the very first time! i love it, so far. I always been the bookworm that likes to read the books in its original language. For me I read books in English, Spanish, Portuguese(Brazil), French and German.
i wish you had more subscribers, youre so much better than alot of other booktubers. i feel sincerely educated after watching a video from you, you have that knowledge/professor aura about you. annnnd ive added miracle creek and roadside picnic to my tbr now. after falling in love with solaris, a book i never would have known about without watching your videos, im sure that ill love these too. roadside picnic especially. LOVE anything from russia/post soviet countries. best writers on the planet imo. also, just finished the goldfinch and your review was spot on. definetly a slow burn, i got bored a little but the ending was powerful and i just felt old after reading it. the philosophical passages were so blunt and relevant to society that i just, i felt penetrated on a spiritual level if that makes sense.
I was also roped into The Immortalists by the premise. But, loved every bit of it. Also, I'm right there with you regarding King. He has definitely had some fantastic contributions over the years, but the man can not write dialogue.
Totally can't agree with you on 'The seven husbands of Emily Hugo'. I also just read it last year after being annoyed by the hype, but I find it deserved all the hype it got. Great read.
It's so interesting to me how I wholeheartedly agree with you on some books like The Winternight Trilogy and The Goldfinch but then also disagree wholeheartedly on other books like The Seven Husband of E.H. This shows how different reading tastes and people are and that one shouldn't be mad about different opinions. Even though I disagree sometimes, I still highly enjoy your channel and like you as a person, so don't worry about unpopular opinions. The world would be utterly boring if we all had the same tastes.
This is the first video of yours I've watched but I gotta say I think I've found my booktuber! I love how you manage to describe the books without giving too much of the story away. I also really liked the range of genres featured and even your negative reviews made me curious to read the book to form my own opinion. Keep up the good work! Subscribed!
I have stumbled across your channel (starting with this video) and stayed up late watching your book reviews. You are very well spoken and also have inspired me to try some new books. When you describe the scary books I actually want to read them!
I love your channel so much. I love how honest you are and I feel like I can so trust you with your opinions. I am making a special shelf for books that some of my favourite book tubers have loved over the course of 2019. And I’ve got a couple from this video for it!
My best books of 2019 where: And every morning the way home gets longer and longer by Fredrik Backman, A little life by Hanya Yanagihara and Girls of paper and fire by Natasha Ngan.
Honestly wish it was just best books, I'm not fond of negative lists. But it's your own channel, do your thing. There are a couple books on your list that I haven't read but might be interested in, so thanks for the list. Most of the books I read this year are classical mythology, both for enjoyment and also for book research. The best one I read was the recent translation of the unabridged version of "The Valmiki Ramayana". While not quite as large as "The Mahabharata" (only 1500 pages vs over 5000), it was beautiful and will stay with me.
I'm currently listening to Miracle Creek and it's amazing from the first word! I read Evelyn Hugo in 2018 and it's one of my favourites! I want to read the Whisper Man this year! My favourites were the following six books : Daisy Jones and the Six, City of Girls, Ask Again, Yes, The Seven or Eight Deaths of Stella Fortuna, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle and The Chestnut Man!
We just went for classic top ten reads on our channel but this is great, I love the different genres you go through. Planning to read Vicious and Vengeful in 2020 and I'm so excited for them
I also really enjoyed Roadside Picnic by the Stragatsky brothers, but I feel like their novel Definitely Maybe stuck with me even more (it's been nearly a decade and I still think of it every couple of months). Definitely Maybe has less of a surface level story I think, but what I loved about Roadside Picnic (the feeling that there's ever something happening just outside my periphery) felt even stronger to me in DM. Though, to be fair, I read DM before RP.
Impression Blend Good luck! Your recommendations put me onto The First Law! I think I saw someone say I don’t need to read the other First Law world books (outside the original trilogy) to read A Little Hatred, so hopefully that’s true
Dang I loved the Institute lol I all but inhaled it. I didn't even intend to read it that fast it just happened. I don't know if it was because it was my first Stephen King book or because I like kid themed stories but I loved it. I'll have to read some more of his books to see if the Institute was not as good. The next book of his I was thinking about reading is the Stand. Any thoughts on that anyone ?
Hi Marianna, have you read Dune (Frank Herbert)? It's one of my favorites books of all time. Soon it will became a movie by Dennis Villeneuve. ☀️🐛 If you want to known more sci-fi this year, I recommend the classics like "Rendezvous with Rama" by Arthur C. Clark ; "Foundation" and "I, Robot" by Isaac Asimov. "The Martian Chronicles" by Ray Bradbury would be nice too. I read so many good books in 2019, but my favorites are "A Study in Scarlet - Sherlock Holmes" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and "The Sorrows of Young Werther" by Goethe. Thanks for your recommendations and Happy New Year!!!
This video has made me interested in reading another book by Svetlana Alexievich. I'm still recovering from Chernobyl Prayer though, which was my second favourite book of the year. My favourite book of the year was May We Be Forgiven by A.M Homes which towered above every other novel I read in 2019.
"Chernobyl Prayer" was ROUGH! It was the first Alexievich book I read, I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I'd say "The Unwomanly Face of War" is on par with that - maybe not as graphic (though there is some of that too, of course, since it's a book about war), but just as difficult to process emotionally.
The main problem with Evelyn Hugo is the ones who hyped it didn't read it with the hype yet (including me) so the ones who read it after the hype received a very high expectations. Lol.
Just found your channel and I enjoyed your video very much. Best book for me: Long Bright River (December BOTM) - loved it so much. Worst book for me: Circe - I know - very unpopular opinion but I was soooooo bored.
Hi Marianna! I sadly haven't had a chance to read any of these books, but I have a question for you. Do you ever read Haruki Murakami? I ask because he came out with a new book in 2019 as well, Killing Commendatore, and I was curious if you had any thoughts on it. :)
I've only read "Norwegian Wood", and unfortunately it wasn't my cup of tea. I'm still interested in reading more though, would like to give his work another try in the near future.
@@ImpressionBlend Thank you for writing back ^_^ I've heard before that "Norwegian Wood" is a bit different from his other works, partly just because he doesn't normally write romance. I haven't read it myself yet, but in general, he's not for everyone, I agree. The book that made me fall in love with him was "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World", but most people consider "The Wind Up Bird Chronicle" to be his best.
Miracle Creek was one of my favorites for 2019 too! I still need to read Vengeful. I enjoyed the Goldfinch, if you liked it, check out the Nix! Have you read NOS4A2? That was one of my favorite books for 2019 too.
Me again. If you like GRRM and want to read some of his sci-fi I recommend the novella "A Song for Lya", the short story "With Morning Comes Mistfall" and the fix-up novel Tuf Voyaging. None of them will blow your mind like Ted Chiang, but they make you feel a lot (to me at least). Tuf Voyaging has more dark humor and a cautionary tale feel to it.
Oh my god how good to hear somebody else who thought The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was just okey and nothing extraordinary! I finished it and was..okey?..It was good I guess?.. Thank you :) I am sure I will try Roadside Picnic, I never heard about it before. Thanks :)
Best book I read was Dracula by Bram Stoker (first time read) Worst book for me this year was The House of Thunder by Dean Knootz. It was s great novel and premise until the ending of the book.
Have you seen the film Stalker, by Tarkovsky, based on the book Roadside Picnic - I'd love to see you review that. And, lucky you, could watch it in its original Russian language.
I read Voices from Chernobyl on your recommendation and really enjoyed it so I’ll definitely be checking out these other Russian books you mentioned. :) I read way too much manga and not enough books but my favourites were probably A Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos and Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik. :D
Marianna, could you please film a video where you suggest some Russian literature? I've never really got into that culture, I would love to appreciate it. Thank you and you're always superb ✨💛
Evelyn Hugo is a mix of elements from the lives of some real actresses. It's like... reading several biographies and writing a mosaic of scenes extracted from them. You don't even get the language and attitude one would expect from an actress of that era. So... I agree with you. No originality, nothing really interesting - except for people who have never heard, read, or seen anything about the lives of real actresses.
I heard the same criticism about “The Institute”, specifically the dialogue of the kids. The premise already sounded derivative and when I heard their hot take, I avoided it. Hearing you hit on those points too definitely confirms it for me. E! True Hollywood Story shout out! 😅
I forgot to mention, not much really happens between the kidnapping in the setup and like... 60% into the book. There is a solid half of this book that's just not LONG.
Marianna is gorgeousness. And you can read Dostoevsky in Russian? That's probably all I would read if I were you. Over and over. I'm like a hamster in a cage. Because I read my favorite authors over and over. Dostoyevsky is one of my very very favorites but I just don't like reading translations all the time. So once in a while I'll read Dostoevsky and also the French writer Albert Camus, The Plague in particular, and also the German writer Patrick Suskind. Mostly I read Cormac McCarthy and David Foster Wallace. Besides those Giants of industry, I read Shakespeare and Harold Bloom critical essays on Shakespeare. And Stephen King too.
People have been telling me that Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo is really freaking good. Another 2019 release that I missed out on. Have you read it yet?
I do plan on reading it's attached to a bad memory (basically a person someone i know liked did a review and brought up a political theme, the person i know said something that they maybe shouldn't have said in my opinion and they got blocked and it could have gotten so much more worse but luckily me and another buddy of mine intervened and stopped it from going any further)
Agreed re: Seven Husbands 💯 I do not see the hype. It was “fine”. Off topic, but I know you loved Parasite; and if you’re in the mood to watch another Korean movie, check out “Intimate Strangers”. Sorry, not sure where you can find it (so unhelpful! - I watched it on the plane over Christmas), but I highly recommend and would love to hear your thoughts/review on it.
This is really random but what book is the one to your right? It looks like a picture of a helmet? 😆 In 2019, We were the Lucky Ones stood out to me. I haven’t the time to complete a NEW book, just rereading favorites. I hope to make time this year for reading.
My favorite Dostoevsky was "The Brothers Karamazov", even though I also enjoy his other works. Obviously Tolstoy is worth reading, the Pasternak classic "Doctor Zhivago" is also really good, and Chekov is an author that you will at least touch on in any major college literature course. But don't discount the Russian transplant, Vladimir Nabokov. I love everything he's written, novels and short stories. "Pale Fire" is probably my favorite Nabokov.
Not going anywhere: have whatever opinions you gleam from what you read in the material. As far as the true Hollywood stories, YEAH, they kept to a format to the point where they established the tropes. The same way we now have people unknowingly following the MTV cribs format in house tour videos.
Stephen King always has this weird dialogue in his books. It's like language and colloquialisms that he invented in his head, like you'd see in a fantasy or sci-fi novel. Which is kind of cool, but I'm often left scratching my head as to what his characters are actually going on about.
I'm really intrigued by alexievich especially. I only hear great things about her books. I also discovered Chiang this year. I loved the first collection and will definitely try to check out Exhalation in 2020.
I generally find that people who didn't like "The Goldfinch" are just not into those types of books. I would say you can tell almost right away if it's the book for you or not.
You didn't love a King book... I'm unsubscribing! (Kidding, definitely kidding...) I picked up The Whisper Man after I heard you recommend it and I'm so glad that I did.
I like your reviews. They seem balanced.
Subbed.
Omg how in the world have I never watched your videos till now? I loved everything, from how you edited your video, to separate reviews, your book choices, everything really. Beautiful work.
I read The Shining during my Christmas break and absolutely loved it. Definitely my favorite King book!
I did too! ... and then read Doctor Sleep after the new year. Loved The Shining... sad about my dislike for doctor sleep.
I was not overjoyed with the book seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo either... Didn't understand the fuss. Nice to see someone else admit that
I think it's an okay book (3/5 stars), but...yeah, it's not that amazing. There are a lot of parts where Reid "explains" what happened at a certain point of time instead of writing it out, and it comes off as lazy. How about sosanna's 7 husband's which had it's worthy adaptation in 7 khoon maaf( 7 murders forgiven)
God, yes. I didn't like that book at all.
I know ur books reviews videos don't get that many views and I know its frustrating but please keep making them and keep reading please

Yes! The Winternight trilogy does not get enough love on Booktube. I love mythology and folklore inspired fantasy.
I'm glad to see at least one person lower the hype for The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo 😄 great list!
I have stumbled across your channel (starting with this video) and stayed up late watching your book reviews. You are very well spoken and also have inspired me to try some new books. When you describe the scary books I actually want to read them!
I just read the UNWOMENLY FACE OF WAR today as part of my FYS2 class. It's such a great book. I can't describe it here.
Yes, I used to watch E! True Hollywood Strories all the time! Thanks for posting, can't wait for your favorite films of 2019!
Those were the days )))

Aww, thank you so much! Will you make a video about it? I would love to see what's on it!!
I will for sure!! Just waiting for a couple more best of 2019 videos :)
Thanks for bringing Miracle Creek to my attention. I read it and loved it. Best book I've read this year.
I'm glad you loved it!
My best books of 2019 where:
And every morning the way home gets longer and longer by Fredrik Backman, A little life by Hanya Yanagihara and Girls of paper and fire by Natasha Ngan.
Loved And Every Morning...! I cried my eyes out but it was so beautiful
I'm glad you liked Vengeful! I've seen a lot of people not like it, and I've been a bit scared to pick it up since I loved Vicious so much.

Agree 100% with what you said about The Immortalists
We just went for classic top ten reads on our channel but this is great, I love the different genres you go through. Planning to read Vicious and Vengeful in 2020 and I'm so excited for them
Thank you! Enjoy "Vicious" and "Vengeful", I hope you love them!
Interesting categories. I like how you didn't just go with genres.

The Sun: I'm about to wreck this woman's whole career
Literally almost every time I film! The Sun and I are going to have some words...

I spy A Little Hatred on the shelf! Want to read that once I finish Last Argument of Kings
I've decided to be ambitious and re-read/continue reading all of the First Law world novels this year. Wish me luck!
Impression Blend Good luck! Your recommendations put me onto The First Law! I think I saw someone say I don’t need to read the other First Law world books (outside the original trilogy) to read A Little Hatred, so hopefully that’s true

Happy New Year! I'm planning to read "Dune" this year, in time for the movie adaptation from my favorite director :D
My favorite book i read in 2019 was The Girl With All The Gifts. I did read both Vicious and Vengeful and i found them to be ok
I 100% agree with you about Evelyn Hugo. I liked it, but it did not live up to my expectations. I also liked Daisy Jones better.

This is really random but what book is the one to your right? It looks like a picture of a helmet? 😆 In 2019, We were the Lucky Ones stood out to me. I haven’t the time to complete a NEW book, just rereading favorites. I hope to make time this year for reading.
A Little Hatred by Joe Abercrombie
What Megan said ))
What books would you say are similar books to Roadside Picnic? I think I'd like to read it.
Ugh... I don't mean this as a cheat answer, but I haven't read anything quite like it
@@ImpressionBlend Haha! That's alright. I hope to read it this year.
Marianna, so how many books you read last year? Did you keep a count?
Go on her goodreads. It will probably be there
Most disappointing: The Winds of Winter, as in it didn’t fucking come out !
Ain't that the truth!
I'm really starting getting into Russian literature, I just started Dostoievsky and Pushkin last year, any recommendations?
My favorite Dostoevsky was "The Brothers Karamazov", even though I also enjoy his other works. Obviously Tolstoy is worth reading, the Pasternak classic "Doctor Zhivago" is also really good, and Chekov is an author that you will at least touch on in any major college literature course. But don't discount the Russian transplant, Vladimir Nabokov. I love everything he's written, novels and short stories. "Pale Fire" is probably my favorite Nabokov.
Check out Bulgakov, especially The Master and Margarita (although I should say it gets better the more familiar you are with the historical context).
Damn, thee institute is the only book I bought from 2019... still haven't read it though he HA
Maybe you'll like it?? A lot of people do, so who knows!
Not going anywhere: have whatever opinions you gleam from what you read in the material.
As far as the true Hollywood stories, YEAH, they kept to a format to the point where they established the tropes. The same way we now have people unknowingly following the MTV cribs format in house tour videos.
Apparently, they rebooted E True Hollywood Stories in 2019, according to Wikipedia lol
@@ImpressionBlend About the institute: I was planning on listing to more audiobooks via Libby. I'll probably get to that one once it's available.
Hi Mariana, where are you come from and what languages do you speak ? Ciao ;*
How have you been feeling lately?😁
Your charm is irresistible!!😇💐🌸
You look energetic. 💪
You have a great smile.🤗
I love you!! 😘
Aww thank you so much!
love your content!
Aww thank you!!
Stephen King always has this weird dialogue in his books. It's like language and colloquialisms that he invented in his head, like you'd see in a fantasy or sci-fi novel. Which is kind of cool, but I'm often left scratching my head as to what his characters are actually going on about.
True, but I think it's been a lot weirder in his more recent works.
I read Seven Husbands before all the hype and I had the same thoughts, eh fine 3 stars
I'm so glad I'm not alone!
Have you read THE INSTITUTE?
Greeting from Argentina 😁 😁😁 😁
Did Stephen King wrote any good book? Because I dont know in what kind of mindset you have to be to appreciate them.
The uncut "The Stand" by Stephen king is his masterpiece....it is so good.
I'm really intrigued by alexievich especially. I only hear great things about her books. I also discovered Chiang this year. I loved the first collection and will definitely try to check out Exhalation in 2020.
I didn't like The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Three husbands in I DNF'd it.
World of Warcraft: A Star Crossed Love Story?
I’ve heard both good and bad things about The Goldfinch book, but the movie sucked and was a massive disappointing mess.
I generally find that people who didn't like "The Goldfinch" are just not into those types of books. I would say you can tell almost right away if it's the book for you or not.
You didn't love a King book... I'm unsubscribing! (Kidding, definitely kidding...) I picked up The Whisper Man after I heard you recommend it and I'm so glad that I did.
how would you even get your hands on worst books?! Dont you read the reviews before getting them?
Clearly just because other people like them doesn't mean I'll have the same opinions ;)
@@ImpressionBlend I keep forgetting that you are the nice youtuber that does reply...
Que bonita voz, Nice voice ...
Wish i could read.
I've never read a single book in my life..came here just because to see you talk ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
"The copy I'm holding is Obviously in Russian, which Is how I read it" You a pretentious wanna br!
Wanna be!
FIRST
damn, totally not
Aww shit, next time )))
I'll say it: Stephen King is an overrated author, seriously #UnpopularOpinion 🙂
Marry me?
Basically, only american books. Boring list.
People like Stephen King. They will find any excuse to rate him higher.
I like him too, but that doesn't mean everything he writes is gold...
