I also read Murder on the Orient Express for the first time this fall a couple weeks before the movie came out. It was also my first venture into Agatha Christie and I loved it! I've got two other books coming in time for Christmas! I watched the movie and I guess I liked it better than most. It's worth a watch imo.
LOVE the Graveyard book! Rebecca and Salem's lot I loved when I read them but it has been since I was in my early teens. Christie is a MASTER, but that is one I haven't read. I will have to look for Bird Box. I love an apocalypse tale. Recommendations: Peter Straub's "Ghost Story" (I love Straub even more that King and this is a very classic ghose story), also "Mr. X". And then apocalypse ones: The Fifth Season by NK Jemison and Who Fears Death by Okorafor Nnedi. And in fantasy, the Kingkiller Chronicles (Patrick Rothfuss)
I highly recommend the 1974 adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express. I didn’t see the new one either (for the same reasons as you), so I’m waiting to rent it.
It's so cool to see you doing videos again! I read Murder in the OE recently and although I read it in preparation of the movie, I didn't thought the movie was as good as the book. I liked it, but it was just a "Okay, If you didn't read the book"-movie. Rebecca, Birdbox and Salem's Lot are lying on my nighttable and will be read soon! Funny thing, they all coming up in this video of yours :) I read a lot about Callahan in the Dark Tower books recently and I just missed to read Salem's Lot before... The Graveyard Book sounds like fun. I will definitely order it :) Thanks for the great Video! Nice to have you back!
I also read Rebecca and Murder on the Orient Express this fall. I agree that they are both excellent. Rebecca did surprise me as well - loved it so much more than expected. Also, I listened to the Dan Stevens of Murder on the OE and I am completely on board with your opinion of it. I did Bird Box a couple of years ago and I still frequently recommend it to people. I need to do a reread of Salem's Lot. Great video and great list! You should check out Hell' s Detective by Michael Logan. It was a pleasant surprise for me this fall.
I loved the video! I absolutely have to make time for Salem's Lot. I am a huge Stephen King fan and have read most of his books, but somehow I have missed Salem's Lot. I also like the classic vampire story, so what is my problem?! I also read Bird Box and Murder on the Orient Express this year and loved both of them! I read Murder on the Orient Express because I wanted to see the movie, but wanted to read it first. I actually loved the movie. It was just so completely gorgeous! It was worth it for the beauty, if for nothing else! I'm reading NOS4A2 right now and it's looking like it might end up being one of my faves of the year.
I'm trying to start reading more novels and i read a couple. 1.OO7 Solo by William Boyd. 2.William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Julius Caesar, The Merchant of Venice, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and As You Like It.
I've recently been reading the Wheel of Time series and I'm obsessed with the universe. I just finished book 5 a few days ago but I have to put the next one on hold because of exams coming soon.. I just find myself not being able to put down these books xD I'm adding Salem's lot to my list of books I want to read next year. ir sounds great and I haven't read King in a while, thanks for the recommendation! And happy holidays, so glad you're back to making videos ^^
I totally agree with you about Salem's Lot. I didn't love the main character Ben Mears though. He's one of those transparent Stephen King stand-ins (like Bill Denbrough from It) who feel little bit Mary Sue-like.
Great list !!! Will definitely check out some of those - esp. Bird Box. Do you also read non fiction? I read Michael Lewis's The Big Short this year - esp. because I loved the movie. And its an awesome book. :)
Murder on the Orient Express felt a bit flat to me compered to And Then There Were None ( this also has a TV Mini-Series 2015 ) that is fantastic, you should check it out. I wanted to get into Stephen King, so thank you for recommending Salem's Lot.
I actually followed your goodreads recommendations and read Salem's Lot almost the same time as you and loved it! As far as the similarities with Dracula, while it was inspired by it, both books are very different in style. I know some people that really dislike Dracula simply because it's written as a group of diaries... If you dont care about Murder On The Orient Express I would recommend to see the 1974 version with Albert Finney and Death on the Nile with Peter Ustinov. Some other books that I liked reading this fall were The First Man In The Moon by H.G. Wells and The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Folett. I'm currently reading this really long epic fantasy novel The DragonBone Chair that is part of the Memory, Sorrow and Thorne trilogy by Tad Williams
I listened to bird box on audio as well and LOVED it! I need to read the graveyard book - maybe this coming Oct. oh interesting - I read Salem’s lot this past fall and hated it hahahah.
I have only read *And then there were none* by Agatha Christie, which is a fantastic book. I'll have to get around reading some more of her work. Great video Marianna!
4 out of your 5 of this season are some of my favorite books period:). If you enjoyed Murder on the Orient Express you will have fun with the movie. I think the writing was obviously better but it was fun to see the cool set pieces and so on.
I love when you talk about books. It makes me want to read more. I also loved "Bird Box" and "Salem's Lot". My favorite King this year was "Misery". I had seen the film several times and just wanted to read the book to cross it off my list because it has been on my TBR for years now. But the book is quite different and things happen that are not in the film and Annie is more cruel and psycho than Kathy Bates' Annie... can you imagine!!? I would definitely recommend the book even if you have seen the film. Thank you for the video and Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you too! I've actually been holding off on watching "Misery" because I want to read it first, but from what I've heard so far I think I'll find both very interesting. Definitely looking forward to reading/watching it!
I hear The Murder on Orient Express (the new movie) is bad as well. If you're looking for an adaptation of Christie's work, the Poirot series with David Suchet is pretty good, especially after the super early episodes (I thiiiink it's on netflix, or it was recently?). I need to get around to reading Rebecca, I've had my eye on it for a long time. Not so much for the mystery aspect, but more for the somewhat surreal, Romantic-Gothic tone I hear it has.
Thanks for sharing some of your top picks from the last couple of months. I haven’t had time to read really these last couple of months. So I’ll share some of the ones I read threw out the year. I love Neil Gaiman as well. The full cast audio for American gods is amazing as well. The ocean at the end of the lane is pretty dark and depressing that he did as well. But it feels real personal to listen to it by the author. It started as a letter to his wife. I was in the process of moving and had to put the graveyard book in storage. But it was very interesting from what I read. I’ll definitely have to check out the bird box you mentioned. My sister went to go see the murder on the orient express. She thought it was ok. Not good but not horrible. So you might just rent it. She hasn’t read it. So you’ll probably have a more critical eye on it. I heard the original isn’t too bad. Her other book and then there wore mine was pretty interesting. But essentially sounds the same. Not in a specific order - catching the big fish - paper girls comic - the secret diary of Lara Palmer - milk and honey - shop girl
You might like the 1970s version of Murder on the Orient Express directed by Sidney Lumet with Albert Finney and Ingrid Bergman. Salem's Lot is my favorite King novel. The thing about King is that he's so productive that unfortunately a really great novel could be followed by a not so good one. Do you have a least favorite King novel? Mine is Rose Madder.
I have to recommend reading "In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette" by Hampton Sides. It is a great book to read when it is cold outside and perfect if it is snowing. Also, this could be a silly question, have you ever read any of Neil Gaiman's Sandman series? Thank you for the videos I always enjoy them!
I'll be mostly offline next week so let me start by wishing you happy holidays, Marianna. As always, I want to thank you for your wonderful videos this year, you're the best :) I Think Salem's Lot was the first King novel I've ever read. I must have been in my mid-teens, so I barely remember anything from it, other than the fact that I loved it and that I wanted to read more King. My King phase has long passed, but Needful Things was the most enjoyable book of his that I've read. I'm planning to read Shogun next, which I've been planning to do for a long time. It'll take a while, but it's a classic and I'm excited to see if it's as good as everyone says. After that, I'd love to read The Count Of Monte Cristo and 2001, two other classics that I've postponed for way too long. Too many books, too little time...
I find Gaiman to be a bit of a mixed bag for me, because I'm not automatically a big fan of fantasy. But I listened to the audiobook of Coraline this year and really enjoyed it, and I've heard great things about The Graveyard Book! I may have to try and get it on audio now 😊 you're so lucky that Rebecca wasn't your first du Maurier, I feel like nothing has come close to how good it was now! Although My Cousin Rachel is a close second 😊 have you seen the Hitchcock adaptation of Rebecca? I actually read another of her books this month, The House on the Strand - it was a bit bizarre but good! I wish I'd listened to Bird Box on audiobook - I read it in physical format and enjoyed it, but I had SUPER high hopes for it so of course I was let down a bit, ugh. But maybe I'll try it again on audiobook! If you want another Agatha Christie, definitely check out And Then There Were None! And yeah I saw the MOTOE film adaptation - I enjoyed it but it's not going to blow you away! Ugh, I want to read Salem's Lot SO BAD - so glad to hear you loved it! Also, award for longest comment ever goes to... 🙄
I can't say I'm automatically a fan of anything, but there is something about Gaiman's particular type of dark fantasy that really speaks to me. The only book of his that I thought was just OK (so far) was "The Sleeper and the Spindle"-it wasn't a bad retelling, and the art was gorgeous, but it just wasn't on par with his other work for me. And YES, you should definitely try to read "Salem's Lot" next year-I feel like you will really like it!
I started with "Stardust" and that clearly worked out for me :) "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" seems like a good starting point too. I would NOT recommend starting with "American Gods" though.
I definitely recommend reading more Agatha Christie, she had such attention to detail when it comes to mystery. Her books really invite you to solve the mystery along with the detective and the reread value comes from the clues you missed. I read Murder on the Orient Express in my late teens and it really exposed my short attention span at the time. The problem with the Kenneth Branagh movie is that it doesn't quite engage you in the mystery, the crime scene investigation is seen entirely from above, so you can't process the clues. It doesn't insult your intelligence, but I can't say it rewards it either.
Aww that's sad, it felt very cinematic when I was reading it. Definitely reading more Christie, already have "And Then There Were None" ready to go :) What other books of hers do you recommend?
Where do I begin with the recommendations? And Then There Were None is very different from Christie's usual fare, it's more of a suspense thriller with mystery elements in it. Death on the Nile is a great one as well, with a more desperate killer this time around and The A.B.C. Murders is a very in-depth story as well. I've actually yet to get round to Evil Under the Sun, which I'm going to read in the New Year.
Marianna, I highly recommend you to watch the Soviet movie adaptation of "And Then There Were None" - "10 негритят" (1987). In my opinion, it's one of the best, if not the best screen adaptation of Agatha Christie ever made. So thick with suspense and atmosphere... And, as far as I know, you can even watch it on TH-cam. But first read the book, of course.
You really sold me on reading Murder on the Orient Express. I wanted to read it for the same reasons you did, but never got around to it and same with the movie but that was mostly because a lot of people said it was disappointing. I think I need to read that now. Also damn you made Bird Box seem really interesting. I'm curious too if you have seen the film adaptation of Rebecca directed by Alfred Hitchcock? If there is anybody who can do a thriller, it's him. You definitely made me really want to read these books now haha which was particularly a surprise for Salem's Lot because I find Stephen King very hit or miss (please don't hate me) Ps, I love that poster for The Shining behind you
Stephen King's work can definitely be hit or miss, I feel like a lot of people would agree. He generally has interesting ideas, but the execution isn't always amazing. "Salem's Lot" is definitely one of his best though, at least from what I've read and from what other people who have read more of his books say, so probably worth a try for you :)
Impression Blend I completely agree. Even when I don't like a book he wrote, I still find the idea really interesting. Like if I'm being honest I wasn't crazy about The Shining book, maybe that's because I saw Kubrick's film first which is clearly very different, I know I'm in the minority with that though haha. I did like The Green Mile a lot though, and I like a lot of the film adaptations. Maybe I'm just not reading his best work. But I'll be sure to check out Salem's Lot
Yo, Marianna! I'm sending you a copy of Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson in the mail since I think you should give him another shot. Hope you like it! But Neil Gaiman is the man! Been meaning to pick up Graveyard Book on Amazon's UK site since I love the way the UK cover looks. And off topic, but I wonder when the next Illuminae Files is releasing 🤔
Aww thank you so much! It seems I need some final push to give Sanderson another shot, but I hear nothing but love for "Mistborn". Which edition of "The Graveyard Book" are you getting? I'm trying to decide which one to add to my collection :)
This review was quite spectacular, & I'm not the biggest novelist reader😊 Someone already commented on whether you also have a top list for graphic novels, which are always more entertaining literature😃 Stay SUPER sweet & happy holidays!🎄🎁⛄ Now I'm about to go eat Apple pie with ice cream😍
The new movie of The Orient Express is really bad. You should watch the adaptation with David Suchet in it or the previous movie that was made in the 1970 (I think). ;)
I've missed you so much i'd have listened to half an hour of you doing your tax returns. That said, thanks for the recommendations. I wish not all authors were from an English-speaking pool and I am not too great on *reading* King - his premises are superlative, his writing is ... a little too under the influence for my taste. That man wastes a LOT of ink to hear himself write. I think I'll try Rebecca first and then re-read Dame Christie. Thank you!
I also read Murder on the Orient Express for the first time this fall a couple weeks before the movie came out. It was also my first venture into Agatha Christie and I loved it! I've got two other books coming in time for Christmas! I watched the movie and I guess I liked it better than most. It's worth a watch imo.

I've been really liking Karen Slaughter's books and have read quite a few this year.
This channel needs just one more thing to be perfect - Q&A videos!

Thank you! You too!
i haven't read the book rebecca but i saw the 1940 movie recently and it was really good! also I recommend watching Thelma (a norwegian horror movie)
In my opinion, Salem's Lot is my favorite vampire novel after Dracula. Salem´s Lot deserves a very good movie.
I listened to bird box on audio as well and LOVED it! I need to read the graveyard book - maybe this coming Oct. oh interesting - I read Salem’s lot this past fall and hated it hahahah.

That's good to know! The trailer looked really good, so I'm a little surprised about the feedback from most people.
I love when you talk about books. It makes me want to read more. I also loved "Bird Box" and "Salem's Lot". My favorite King this year was "Misery". Hey, Marianna, do you have any intentions of making a most anticipated movies of 2018 video like you did one year ago for 2017?
Just me your videos and subscribed indeed! Thanks for the excellent reviews!
Welcome to my channel :D
Your number one is one of my favorites! Great list!
Not in a specific order
- catching the big fish
- paper girls comic
- the secret diary of Lara Palmer
- milk and honey
- shop girl
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE AGATHA CHRISTIE
I highly recommend “and then there were none” it is incredible
Definitely reading that one next!
I haven't read a ton of Stephen King just yet, I think I'm at 6 total at the moment, and so far "IT" was the one I struggled with the most.
You should watch the 1970s version of Murder on the Orient Express, it's really fun!
I heard that one is the best, really need to watch it soon.
You're going to start me reading books again Marianna.
Good! :)
Surprisingly, I'm yet to read "Sandman"-one of these days I will buy the set and marathon it. It certainly sounds fascinating!
Let me help you start that marathon. A copy of Sandman Vol. 1 is heading to your P.O. Box. Hope you enjoy!
I'll be mostly offline next week so let me start by wishing you happy holidays, Marianna. As always, I want to thank you for your wonderful videos this year, you're the best :)
I Think Salem's Lot was the first King novel I've ever read. Which Neil Gaiman book is the best one to start with ? 😊
Mel Wilde I’d suggest Stardust or American Gods :)
Ooh see I started with Ocean at the end of the Lane and LOVED IT... but I’d totally recommend Neverwhere!
I started with "Stardust" and that clearly worked out for me :)
"The Ocean at the End of the Lane" seems like a good starting point too.
I would NOT recommend starting with "American Gods" though.
Impression Blend okay thanks !
They don't demand a certain order--they stand alone. So maybe read a brief synopsis and match your mood.
I definitely recommend reading more Agatha Christie, she had such attention to detail when it comes to mystery.
I just started getting into reading books and I am taking your advice in it. Thank you so much! :-)
I hope you discover some new favorites :D
Impression Blend This is the one I set my eyes on, though I wish there was a hardcover just like it. goo.gl/HzXiyY
The movie adaptation is ok
The thing is that it is exactly as the original film offering nothing new
But it is really well shot and acted
This review was quite spectacular, & I'm not the biggest novelist reader😊
Someone already commented on whether you also have a top list for graphic novels, which are always more entertaining literature😃
Stay SUPER sweet & happy holidays!🎄🎁⛄
Now I'm about to go eat Apple pie with ice cream😍
Sandman by Neil Gaiman comes to mind.
Will you be reading Annihilation before the Feb release of the adaption?
Absolutely!
Can you make best movies of 2017
wasn't the "murder on the orient express" obligatory literature in the school? since I remember reading that many years ago.
Not where I'm from :)
already forgot how you reply to nearly everyone! Love you for that!
I try :)
Thank you!
Thank you
You're welcome :)
hi Marianna
hi :)
Do you have heterochromia?
