I seem to remember reading that Chris Cornell wanted an apocalypse video, appropriate for the lyrics, but he really wanted a HAPPY apocalypse! So they used early 90's CG effects - which were just becoming a thing - to create the exaggerated creepy happy faces.

Soundgarden was a long-time Seattle hard rock band that became known for pioneering “Alternative/Grunge” music along with Pearl Jam and Nirvana, although most of them would consider themselves just to be hard rock bands.
Their lead guitarist and drummer recently recorded an album with the bassist from Nirvana and several different singers called “3rd Secret.”

Definitely not just a product of a corporate think-tank. Soundgarden was the first grunge band to sign a major record deal though. They would have been the face of grunge if their early stuff wasn't so incredibly heavy that it just couldn't possibly cross over into mainstream. Superunknown is still quite dark and brooding as well, but there's significantly more pop sensibility to it and songs like "Black Hole Sun" coupled with multiple issues surrounding other grunge bands at the time propelled them into the spotlight as the biggest name of the genre left standing in '94. As noted in the quote you read, Cornell wasn't particularly happy with that however and saw the superficial nature of it all for what it really was.

Show Me How To Live - Audioslave

Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were the first two Seattle bands that gained prominence at the start of the 1990s, although in 1990 they were originally advertised as "metal bands" before the "grunge" label was assigned following the success of Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were light years beyond those other grunge bands in terms of talent and musicianship, however. I felt that the bands that followed the example of Nirvana and Pearl Jam favored raw emotional authenticity at the expense of musical skill.

Ummm, the latter part of this comment is absolute garbage. Nirvana played a style that was FAR from less talented, but only more RAW. Think of the genius of John Lennon playing his grunge-type stuff - 30 years before it was called that. And Neil Young guitar styling in order to create tension. Some people don't really understand music and say foolish things. Kurt Cobain had a much higher musical genius than his contemporaries - just like Lennon, and Lennon influenced him the most - and Cornell as well as a thousand other legends. If you really want to learn deep musical analysis and about particular artists you might go to Rick Beato's channel and do a search on just about anything. He has also interviewed many icons/ superstars/ legends of rock to get it right.

@@44excalibur i was never a fan of pearl jam or nirvana, but i would not say they were lacking in skill.. i mean kurt even asked j mascis (also known as "the godfather of grunge") to join nirvana due to his skills on guitar and drums, luckily J said no and is still playing with the original dinosaur jr line-up + soon to release another solo album.
and krist has often been seen in pictures wearing his dinosaur jr shirt which is purple with a cows head on it.
pearl jam? well they had members from their previous band green river (which split up and became mudhoney and pearl jam), and it seems like mainstream aspirations were pearl jams reason to form the band in the first place since the other members of green river didnt want that mainstream sound.. both dinosaur jr and green river/mudhoney have had a bigger impact on other musicians than soundgarden and alice in chains.

@@michaelbirke6050 if you listen to the kids themselves, Grunge gave voice to what they were already feeling, not the other way around. They couldn't find a place in the synth heavy pop music of the 80s. Grunge is essentially a revival of 70's metal with lyrics that (while frequently insensible because of how metaphorical, poetic, or personal they are) moved away from the love songs that they couldn't relate to, towards the start of the social justice movements that are still here today.

    • @michaelbirke6050

@@Bramble451 Thank you for your thoughtful and introspective comment. I do feel sad for the nineties generation. Question is why that generation was feeling abandonment, loneliness and depression and did the recording industry genuinely care or just feed it by perpetuating it by a rare and unexpected commercial success of Nirvana’s “Nevermind”. Please don’t try to convince me that the underlying motivation was quote “social injustice and change”. Name me one thing Rage Against The Machine changed except their bank account. It was all about aesthetics. Tom Morrello storming back and forth sure looked angry. Even the most successful band to come out of the nineties, Pearl Jam, talked the talk but in the end did they change any mindsets? Eddie Vetter just became friends with Bruce Springsteen. Greed and money always rears its ugly head. Bookend the grunge era with Linken Park. One doesn’t even have to close one’s eyes to see the darkness. Tragically Curt Cobain, Chester Bennington and the singer whose band and video started this conversation Chris Cornell all took their own lives. That is not by coincidence. There is a reason that many comments on TH-cam from people lament that they never had a chance to experience the music of the sixties and early seventies. You want to know why? It’s what is sadly missing in grunge. Creativity. Nirvana set the tone and provided the blueprint which countless bands followed to the delight of the record companies. Consequently that’s what that generation was fed. That’s where my original use of the word sad comes from. No I didn’t grow up in the nineties but I did listen to alternative/grunge/metal on the radio and very rarely heard anything hopeful, encouraging or positive. I’m putting this all in context after listening to sixty years of music. I don’t disagree with your comment, I just hope you can see from my perspective. It’s even more ironic that the comment section of Diane’s video starts out with comments about suicide and prevention. Honestly, this is the first time I’ve ever seen this.I sincerely hope that she limits her first listens from this era. Talk about karma. I’m looking up at the top of my screen and she’s first listening to Alice In Chains “Down in a Hole”. Why did Layne Staley’s name come to mind? See, I’m getting caught up in it. Sorry. Will try to end this on a positive note. Stay safe and well.🎸✌️☮️😊
