Jerry was always shy and self conscious about his voice and didn't want to sing but Layne kept encouraging him to sing. Luckily for us fans he was able to get Jerry to sing. Their harmonies were amazing.

Jerry wasn’t shy. My bff was a singer in a band that Jerry absolutely loved, Sweet Savage. He always knew he had the talent. He was just never sure what way to go. Metal, glam (how they started), then came beautiful grunge.

@@nancymjohnson it's amazing how a narrative like that take on life. Jerry was in Chorus in HS n as u states clearly knew he could sing.
All he said, was why would I sing when we have "him, that guy". Layne was a master at dissonant harmonies n their voices blended so well.
Sadly Jerry sang more on the tripod album because Layne wasn't well. Great story about sweet savage, must be some awesome stories.

Layne was as authentic as they come. You could hear the pain in his voice. His addiction that he would eventually succumb to was ever present. This entire performance is a masters class in music. Layne died the same day as Kurt Cobain several years later. It was a true loss to music and humanity.
The song "Frogs" is my favorite track from this session. It really showcases their talents in a very unique way
    *Fun fact*

Every time I see AIC, it is bittersweet. Their music is so wonderful, and moody, and the essence of 90s rock. Then I remember I was at Layne Staley's last on-stage performance at KC's Kemper Arena on July 3, 1996. they opened for KISS. you knew it was gonna be one of those unforgettable nights when Jerry Cantrell comes on stage and yells "hey, f***ers!" into the mic.
Layne, like many others, left us too soon. I'm grateful that the music of AIC is alive and being spread through your channel.
the entire KC concert video is on TH-cam. July 3, 1996. grainy AF, copied from a camcorder, and absolutely amazing.
also... "Rooster" and "Grind" , two of their most popular songs, are fun listens. The story behind "Rooster" is wonderful.

AiC is one of my all-time favorite bands, so I encourage everyone to listen to them. Not sure I'd have recommended this one as an introduction, but it's a fine song. They were unique amongst the "grunge" era bands in that they utilized multiple singers frequently as more than background vocals. This is a deep, darkly beautiful hole to explore.

    • @chrisd7047
      @chrisd7047 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

There were actually 2 members of the band who died from drugs: Staley, and original bassist Mike Starr, who was not the bassist in this video (this was Mike Inez). Starr was actually the last person to see Staley alive, and the guilt he felt at that likely contributed to his own death. Layne's body was found about 2 weeks later in his apartment, decomposed to the point where he needed to be identified by dental records. The coroner estimated that the 6'1" Staley only weighed 90lbs (40kg) at the time of his death. The video you watched, from the MTV Unplugged series, was the first time they'd performed in 2.5 years, and Layne was not well.
To answer your question, a lot of art comes from pain; the happy and well-adjusted have little to get off their chests. This is especially true of musicians, poets, and comedians.

For more of this unplugged set check out Nutshell. For a video of Layne Staley(Singer) in his prime/healthy check out Love Hate Love(live at the Moore), this unplugged performance is great but Layne was deep in his drug addiction at this point & not in great health. This was 1 of his last performances before he became a recluse & just did drugs & played video games for the last 6 years of his life. Layne became such a recluse it took 2 weeks before they found his body after he OD'd. Just a sad story.
AIC started as a Metal band from Seattle but got lumped into the Grunge genre with Nirvana, Pearl Jam & Soundgarden when Grunge blew up. AIC were the heaviest band of the 4 with deep & dark lyrics. Jerry Cantrell is the other singer/Guitarist in this video & he's the main songwriter of the band, he's wrote 50% of the lyrics & 97% of the music. Thankfully he's still alive & still making music along with the Drummer Sean & Mike the Bassist(all in this video) with a AIC without Layne.

Being a teenager during grunge was freaking amazing. I played this ‘tape’ until it broke. IMO the best 5 years of music, in all genres, was 1989-1994. Hip hop, country, rock, alternative rock really breaking out, r&b, pop, Tejano, all of it!

The beautiful haunting sound of a man resigned to defeat. IMO one the greatest vocal performances of an era. His ability to pour out his emotions in a painfully mesmerizing manner is nothing but amazing.

Layne was an incredible talent that we will never see again, I remember watching this on MTV the day it first aired. I remember thinking how bad Layne looked and thinking about how he was suffering. YOU MUST REVIEW NUTSHELL! I still feel emotional every time I see it.

I did not know Alice in Chains were inspired by Motely Crew and Kiss. Both Bands have a lot of good songs also. Something I learned with You today.

I think Layne was inspired by Motely Crew in his younger years(the GLAM years) AIC's sound definitely wasn't. Though KIss was definitely a inspiration for the whole band.

After Staley's passing, the remaining band members thought the band was over. Buf playing together at a benefit a few years later inspired them to resume it, and they invited William DuVall to join.
DuVall plays guitar, sings Staley's lines in the old songs, and they still do the same kinds of harmonies in many of the new songs.
They're still really good. Layne Staley remains such an icon, though, that no one seems to pay attention to their DuVall era.
AIC have a song, "Black Gives Way to Blue," written about the process of mourning the loss of their friend and band mate. Chris Cornell's daughter Lily Cornell Silver, gave a haunting performance of it, which can be found on TH-cam.

When it comes to Alice in Chains i think you might enjoy "Rooster" and "Nutshell" wich they also performed on MTV Unplugged.
When it comes to Rock Band's with "happy endings" i think of bands like Metallica, Kiss and AC/DC.
