THIS is what should be a recall. You should be able to bring your car to a shop and have this installed free of charge. Tesla should buy hundreds of thousands from you.
For those of you, who are telling Brian that an emergency back door release is not necessary even if the door's power open button fails to work, that other options are available --- when in an accident, one is often dazed & panicked. The very first thing we look for is the door handle release in order to escape. Not climbing over seats, finding alternative doors, or breaking windows to get out. Thank you for all the Brians out there, who seem to understand this.
Hey thanks for the video my door kept getting stuck (from closing too hard) and I finally installed this emergency latch. A couple tips for those who are installing - Don't use twine its not nearly strong enough and will definitely break - use coated vinyl wire instead. Second, the emergency latch cable itself should be ziptied along the bottom channel against one of the clip mounts (circular black piece that holds the clips you have to pop out/in to get the door cover off). This secures it in the direction in which the wire is being pulled and makes it much less likely to have a situation where the wire pops out of its groove and you cannot get the leverage needed to unlock. I ran it along the bottom and then even looped the coated vinyl wire (after it was affixed to the door latch) around one of the clip mounts so that the emergency latch itself didn't "bottom out" by hitting the door cover before you could pull it long enough to unlatch the door. This wont make much sense until you pull this thing off and start trying to do it yourself. Coated vinyl wire - www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-8-in-x-30-ft-Vinyl-Coated-Steel-Wire-Rope-Kit-810632/204394877 For those saying this isn't necessary because of 'blah blah blah' reasons - Do you even own a tesla? If you do, and you've closed your door too hard like I have on numerous occasions it gets perma-stuck. And the ONLY way to get it unstuck is to wait weeks for a service call for them to take the cover off to pull the emergency latch or you can do it yourself like we are in this video. No amount of pontificating on the internet is going to un-stuck my door in these situations, hence why we really needed the physical door unlock latch like the front door has but on the rear. Really dumb tesla didn't do this.
nice! i guessed a reasonable price and found, after clicking, your price is reasonable. that is a relief. this will be interesting to see others install and see the good and the bad.
you think that's reasonable price for a lanyard and some string?! a lanyard is $2 and the string is worth pennies. Its a very well done video, but I dont see how that price is reasonable.
I think I wouldn't cut a slot in the rubber with scissors. I would measure carefully and just puncture it with a pointy hobby knife. It will still be a slot, but not as big and the edge will reman intact. Possibly turn the knife 90° and make it a cross shape (like a soft drink to-go lid) if there's too much resistance or the cable won't quite go through.
Smart idea and video tutorial! Definitely not needed for me but I appreciate the option for others who have backseat passengers frequently including children! Keep on innovating.
Great video. I am preparing to do this on my 2020 Model 3. I noticed at the back of both rear pockets there is a slotted indentation. The slot is toward the seat side. I will know when apart but it looks like the loop will go through the slot without a need to drill. Then using the string until a flag is attached. Anyone else try this?
If that cable breaks it will already have pulled the release, but at that point the door will either be not possible to open or will be missing. In other words, the cable breaking will be the least of your worries.
Same topic: How about a photo of places you think should work well and where you suggest might not work for the slit or hole. I know you say it in the video. How about a drawing of this. Also can you replace a clip if you were to break one?

i1Tesla any idea if Model S has this pull cord under the door panel too? Tesla says pulling the Model S handle all the way back will manually open it, but that doesn't appear to be true because the door only opens if the car in in park (even unlocked). A real emergency pull tab like yours would open the door no matter way. Edit: I found this video th-cam.com/video/W4M6Zw6jWpA/w-d-xo.htmlm that does show a mechanical connection, and not additional cables. So not really sure why it doesn't open.
i1Tesla I admire your intensity and intentions but you have 4 doors to try you can fold down seats and release the trunk or break the glass that is much easier to break from inside. I do not want to say that no one should deny this as redundant option but the odds and scenario required to need this option would be near zero odds. Being the fact that most major accidents break at lease one of may glass. The battery is water resistant so if you end up in deep water or a flood you have at least 30 seconds of power. The idea I have is put a small shape charge on hinges and with a little push you can remove whole door
You must be two feet tall or in the circus. There is no way I am able to climb or fold the seats down to climb out the back. Did I read that right you want to put a small charge to blow the door off the hinge and you think that is ok but my $18 pull is a bad idea.
i1Tesla I’m sorry I’m not hating the idea if you like 5 redundant methods. If your ok with 4 redundant methods of escape you will not need to damage the interior waste time modify the car. But I love your idea to open the hood and trunk and I like the pass through even though I don’t have a need for a pass through just put a wire kit for trailer lights and hitch put all my lumber on trailer I wish you really like to add extra led lighting that makes it look like a night time show car. I want to see more Tesla’s with lots of bling The seats are 60/40 you fold down 1 side climb through or if you need more room because your 350 pounds fold down 1 side climb on that side then fold down other side and now you have a Tesla bed push the button and low crawl to safety You just mentioned a few scenarios with power or damage and those odds are low and rare plus you forget you can rotate your body to lay across the seats and someone 4 ft tall could early kick a side window out. Your emergency scenarios just make me chuckle a bit because my instinct would probably go to destroy something before remembering I have a flimsy handle that will get destroyed with a little fear and adrenaline I would get rid of the string go to Home Depot and get cable maybe on a metal key ring something that will not get brittle after the second summer heat
I applaud your ingenuity but, as I’ve said before this isn’t needed. No vehicle with child locks has an emergency release either because it’s not needed. And if the wires were cut in an accident removing power to the door, then this manual release cable could be cut too. We can “What if” any situation to death, but I’m sure Tesla has already given great thought to safety. Your product does make a good keychain though and could always use another drill bit.
i1Tesla exactly, we should do nothing. Has anyone ever asked Tesla why there isn’t a manual emergency release for the back seats? Or any manufacturer with child locks?
The child locks argument is moot because the outside handles work still with child locks. If there is no power in the car (To include the redundant power source) The outside latch would not work either
@@revaious2476 really? Anyone have any pics or videos showing it? And if this is true, I'd still like to hear from Tesla as to why then it wasn't included with the Model 3.

@@i1Tesla Now you're being facetious. If the button is inoperable from impact, you've got bigger issues. Also a passenger could pull that accidentally and open the door. A better solution is to break the window and get out that way. You can use the middle back seat headrest's rods to do that if you can't get the doors to open.
