The nice thing about using a key chain is that you can remove it as a means of providing a "child lock" type feature. You may consider a mini clip or carabiner instead of the metal ring for easier removal and reinstallation. If I install one, I will probably try to not tear the rubber liner though and just route out the front edge. Won't operate as slick but really only has to be functional in case of an emergency.

Would it open if the car is in motion? Thinking that some kid could get their iPad case or a toy hooked on this and accidentally open the door on the freeway.
I watched the fire fighter video and remember them saying there was a cable behind the door. I never thought about doing this though - brilliant. I’ll definitely be interested in a set of straps. I wonder if one department built it in and another department didn’t plan on it so Tesla just let it “hang out” behind the panel.
This is very cool! I think Tesla didn't have it there because a kid could pull it or push a button, this would be dangerous for small children who would totally pull a rubber band, but I would personally trust this in the car with my older kids, not so much with a 4yo. It's a fantastic mod I think man people without tiny kids will probably add.
@@i1Tesla not all kids are in car seats. Kids by nature are curious like monkey-if someone pull that when in motion. You know how many teenagers crash Tesla-non car seat kids can do weird stuff.

Plus we need to teach the kids to not touch it and show them what it is for.
Great idea and can't wait for the installation video. Just wondering if you've tried to pull this open while the car is moving to see if it actually opens and if there is an alarm that goes off on the display.

1. EMS doesn't need to know as much as you need to know it is there. You should have more time before anyone gets to the crash. 2. Brake window and reach in. 3. This will override Child Proof Locks. 4. The window drops fast and this is only to be used as an emergency like the front. 5. Thank you
As a former professional Firefighter, if their is a child in the back and they need to be extracted, they will get them out. In this situation they would instruct the kiddo to lean away and break the glass if it is life or death. That being said, this is the best mod to date and I agree with the tilt level, this will save lives

Excellent, Excellent idea, Brian!! As a suggestion if you’re not settled on the Red(white letters) color of the strap, consider if a glow-in-the dark yellow(black letters) version is available...similar to the emergency latch handles are on trunks/frunks. Either way, excellent!!

It's amazing how much body structure there is protecting the back seat passengers, shown at 0:54! If this car was a hatchback, most of that material would have to be cut away.
I'd like to hear from Tesla first before doing this, because the reason can't be about costs. This car is all about safety. I'm not sure about this one Brian.
great idea, really is!!!! you should look for a silicone strap as you are - but also one that glows in the dark ;) …..that would be even better in case it's night or in a dark situation during an emergency. figure you will be frantic and struggling already, it might be easier to locate within seconds
My son is autistic and is typically an escape artist. He can/will usually find any button or lever etc that opens a door or window. So I am always scared of him somehow finding a way to open and escape... That said, I think this is in a location that might be ok even for him. It’s out of the way and not directly in his reach when he is strapped into his car seat harness. So this might even work for us too. I need to think on it a little longer but it seems like a really good idea
What about adding a 1/4 inch waterproof grommet to the kit, slip the wire thought the grommet and place it in the hole. You should be able to find one that seals in the hole and around the string. Also drilling / melting a hole in the rubber mat would look better. Also could you not drill the hole in a slightly higher spot so water would not run down the hole?
Appreciate all you do Brian! Keep up the awesome work! FYI... Just awaiting the springs for the rear trunk, and I've sourced the struts from a well known retailer. Assuming they work properly I'll give you a heads up, where and part number. Being in Canada, we don't get access to the same Amazon products as you guys do in the US.
I dont think that not putting the emergency release in the back is a safety issue for kids. Normal cars with normal door handles and have child safety locks in the rear will not open if someone pulls the handle. Unless Tesla's "locks" are just electrically turning off the sensor that for the door open button.
If I’m awake after an accident, I can grab the kids and carry them over to the front and take them out of the car. If I’m passed out from the accident, my kids in the back may be too young to know/remember to pull that handle. If my kids are old enough to know and remember to pull the handle you installed, then they are old enough to climb up to the front and use the manual release on the front doors and get out. And if I’m passed out from the accident and the kids in the back are too young to know to pull the handle, then fire department needs to rescue us. But the fire department wouldn’t know that I had installed that handle....they would just cut the door open like they did in the video. So I don’t see the point of doing this at all. I do appreciate your effort and proactive thinking! And I love your videos!
Here is the thing. Yes I would do the same thing but not all accidents are the same. You don't know if the kid is able to clime out the front or not. Or if you are able to get them out. I would rather have a fighting chance and every option at my fingers to save my family.
Nice idea but... would like to know how it's installed before I order and drill a hole in my Tesla door panel. My hunch is, it requires removal of the door panel.
This makes me think. Have they really not thought about these? Or is there a reason for it. If they haven’t, then they need to hire you. If they have, they need to tell us why not? Why not a popping frunk and trunk and why not a manual release for the back doors.
Amazing Brian, been waiting for vid about this since the model 3 came out. First thing I asked about at Tesla shop, and was surprised there was no door release. Great job as always!!!
I am interested, but I didn't get the poll in the corner. I think it's great that you did this, but I personally would like to hear from Tesla on this before proceeding on my own car. You are a top 10 (OK, well top 13) referrer so I think they should be watching. It would be great if a Tesla engineer could chime in here.
@@i1Tesla Excellent. And see my comment below about velcro-ing the strap to the inside of the door pocket, making releasing the door more of a concerted effort and less likely a mistake. Something like that would be great, especially if your kit came with the velcro built into the strap.

I really like your spirit ! Thanks for the great videos !
Whats the reason that pulling on the emergency latch on the front doors can cause damage, if there is no problem doing it for the rear doors? Are they just worried about wear and tear on pulling the wire?
Very good idea, thanks for sharing. But what if kid spill soda in the door pockets, maybe hole should be on the side a bit? Maybe need a sticker so emergency people know there's a manual door opener at the bottom of the door?
WHAT IF someone breaks in that little back window (the one that doesn't set off the alarm) and then uses a stick to pull the strap to mechanically open the door. Will it set off the alarm?
@@brantwedel Yeah... for me, I'd prefer it if the front doors' emergency latch was in a different place -- or, better yet, if it only worked when the electric latch had failed.
Great work! I hope that Tesla can also do something with future safety ideas like this. Would I be interested in buying your kit? Probably yes. I think that is essential not only for children but any adult stuck in the back. Some adults are worth saving.
Or...you put something in that door pocket that gets caught on that loop ( comb, hairbrush....anything )…. OMG if that door ever opens on the expressway and the wind doesn't hold it closed. MAN...it will only take one incident.
That's what seatbelts are for. Remember they cut the roof off car and people are fine. If the kid is old enough to reach it in the seat then he is old enough to know not to touch it.
Another awesome idea! That location seems perfect - not likely to be used accidentally (unlike the front releases). I would probably order a few sets to give as gifts. I am still waiting for the trunk springs to get here from Hong Kong, so I would love for you to package that up too.
Excellent vid. If the car is locked, does the door still release? A hanger through the window and a hook in the strap is a quick shatter-free break in. Maybe a triangular hook-proof handle would work?
This video made me subscribe. Love the content and how you are thinking so outside the box with your videos. You should find a supplier for every product you introduce and make a killing on them. People like you deserve to be wealthy.
Your awesome Brian! Thanks for all your videos, by far my favorite TH-camr for Tesla. Just ordered my M3 MR, I wanted to use your code to support you but I didn't. Someone from the community reached out to me and it made a big difference for him and I was happy to help. It's refreshing that you don't push your code and try to help others, keep on the good work!
The other mods were cool but this one is really special given the nature of safety involved. Only question - will this work while driving / the vehicle is moving?
Yes it will work when driving but it is far enough out of reach when a kid is seat belted in. If the kid is big enough to reach then he is big enough to know not to touch it.
The firemen are going to take the people out of the car first if the doors can open before cutting the power. And if the doors can’t opened because they are so mangled and they have to use the jaws of life and cut the power. It doesn’t matter of you can’t open the doors at that point.
Damn, man. You've really been hitting it out of the park with your Model 3 mod videos!
Thank you

Here is the thing. Yes I would do the same thing but not all accidents are the same. You don't know if the kid is able to clime out the front or not. Or if you are able to get them out. I would rather have a fighting chance and every option at my fingers to save my family.
Great idea and video Brian! Hoping Tesla will fix this in a future revision of the Model 3.
Nice idea but... would like to know how it's installed before I order and drill a hole in my Tesla door panel. My hunch is, it requires removal of the door panel.
Mondays video is the install
This makes me think. Have they really not thought about these? Or is there a reason for it. If they haven’t, then they need to hire you. If they have, they need to tell us why not? Why not a popping frunk and trunk and why not a manual release for the back doors.
They though about it because the cord is there
Amazing Brian, been waiting for vid about this since the model 3 came out. First thing I asked about at Tesla shop, and was surprised there was no door release. Great job as always!!!
Tweet elon about this
Excellent Idea, I ordered mine today, don’t forget about the iPad holder.
I wont forget
Great idea! I will certainly buy some. But would prefer all black
They are red
I am interested, but I didn't get the poll in the corner. I think it's great that you did this, but I personally would like to hear from Tesla on this before proceeding on my own car. You are a top 10 (OK, well top 13) referrer so I think they should be watching. It would be great if a Tesla engineer could chime in here.
I will contact someone from Tesla
@@i1Tesla Excellent. And see my comment below about velcro-ing the strap to the inside of the door pocket, making releasing the door more of a concerted effort and less likely a mistake. Something like that would be great, especially if your kit came with the velcro built into the strap.
I really like your spirit ! Thanks for the great videos !
Definitely interested in the straps, answered yes to the poll. Thanks for your awesome videos!
this site is the best DYI for your Tesla on the web!
Just an idea - while you have the door panels off, you could also dynamat / do some sound dampening.
It has some material and the door is sealed already
Very clever. Great video. Thank you!
WOW! Thank You!
As a fireman I can tell you I will pop the door before I will break the glass and reach in and search for a release....
This is more for before you get to the accident. Every minute counts.
Great idea! Count me in on your key ring devices!
You will be able to use it way before the Emergency services get to the accident
WHAT IF someone breaks in that little back window (the one that doesn't set off the alarm) and then uses a stick to pull the strap to mechanically open the door. Will it set off the alarm?
What if
Another great video. Thank you.
If a kid is strong enough and has long enough arms to reach that then they are old enough to know not pull it.
Good point!
Idk, one of my 30 yr old friends pulled the emergency release in the front while we were driving, lol
@@brantwedel Yeah... for me, I'd prefer it if the front doors' emergency latch was in a different place -- or, better yet, if it only worked when the electric latch had failed.
Awesome, I clicked yes for the kit
Great work! I hope that Tesla can also do something with future safety ideas like this. Would I be interested in buying your kit? Probably yes. I think that is essential not only for children but any adult stuck in the back. Some adults are worth saving.
I will have all the pieces on Feb 1st and the install video Feb 4th
Even a kid will know enough to climb through to the front and exit one of the front doors.
Only if the accident was not making that hard to do
I hope Tesla does something like that soon.... So easy to do.. Thanks!!!!
Great info....just worried that kids ( non - car - seat kids) will be pulling that just to see what it does. OMG if they do it on the expressway.
I can really see it. …..Dad...what does this do.. ?
Or...you put something in that door pocket that gets caught on that loop ( comb, hairbrush....anything )…. OMG if that door ever opens on the expressway and the wind doesn't hold it closed. MAN...it will only take one incident.
That's what seatbelts are for. Remember they cut the roof off car and people are fine. If the kid is old enough to reach it in the seat then he is old enough to know not to touch it.
Hmmmm..ok. Going to stay as is here. The risk is much greater than the possible reward to me. I'm still a patreon though.
Another awesome idea! That location seems perfect - not likely to be used accidentally (unlike the front releases). I would probably order a few sets to give as gifts. I am still waiting for the trunk springs to get here from Hong Kong, so I would love for you to package that up too.
That is exactly why I want to control the supply. Almost everyone is waiting for the trunk stuff to show up
@@i1Tesla I bought the DropLock product from a Shopify site. I bet you could quickly set up a storefront there.
I have an ETSY and Square site now.
Excellent vid. If the car is locked, does the door still release? A hanger through the window and a hook in the strap is a quick shatter-free break in. Maybe a triangular hook-proof handle would work?
It will open the door if the car is locked. You wont be able to see in the door pocket from the windows
Great point and awesome work man! Keep up the awesome content!
You should really be part of Tesla’s R&D team. Tesla should design and implement this as a safety recall fix and name it after you.
NICE! Love it, Brian. Brilliant idea. 💡👍🏻😃
Thanks Buddy
They added this feature on Model Y!
This video made me subscribe. Love the content and how you are thinking so outside the box with your videos. You should find a supplier for every product you introduce and make a killing on them. People like you deserve to be wealthy.
Thank you
Brian, what an amazing video. Count me in for sure to help you out with this project.
Rip you just saw money signs lol
That scissor slice should be a nice hole punch. Great video as always.
You could do that too.
“On purposes.” LOL!!!!!!
The wire sticking out is the original Tesla? It'S that long? Cool, great tip... as always.
Yes
Well Done Brian --- But I would be curious iiiii--- WHAT IF -- the latch is pulled while the car is in motion -- will it open the door .>!!
Yes just like the front. That is what seatbelts are for
Wow!! Great idea and awesome kit!
I am very very very interested. Going to do this mod sometime next week. I have an orange glass break tool in each door now.
I will haver the install video for Feb 4th and will be ready to ship that day too.
Definitly interested. I need one for each door.
There will be 2 in each kit. One for each door
Awesome video brian
Your best idea yet. Good job man
Dude. Peaked here. Great work.
I'll be doing it.
Very informative Thanks,
Your awesome Brian! Thanks for all your videos, by far my favorite TH-camr for Tesla. Just ordered my M3 MR, I wanted to use your code to support you but I didn't. Someone from the community reached out to me and it made a big difference for him and I was happy to help. It's refreshing that you don't push your code and try to help others, keep on the good work!
great job
Great Video Brian.
The other mods were cool but this one is really special given the nature of safety involved. Only question - will this work while driving / the vehicle is moving?
Yes it will work when driving but it is far enough out of reach when a kid is seat belted in. If the kid is big enough to reach then he is big enough to know not to touch it.
Good one. Thanks.
The firemen are going to take the people out of the car first if the doors can open before cutting the power. And if the doors can’t opened because they are so mangled and they have to use the jaws of life and cut the power. It doesn’t matter of you can’t open the doors at that point.
This is if in the accident the 12 volt battery is disconnected some how and you need to get your kid out. Not so much for the firemen
