Do these disk-swapping days bring back fond memories, or nightmares? 😇🕹👌 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= More from 1987: tinyurl.com/1987-C64-GAMES My Top Picks: tinyurl.com/CCGS-BEST-GAMES
I think at the end of the 80's I had like 50+ tapes and 500+ disks for the C64 alone. Trying to keep track what was where was impossible. I remember having a copy program which worked exclusively with 2 disk drives (one on channel 8 one on 9), you just needed the C64 to load the program into both the disk drive RAM and it detected automatically if you switched disks and then copied the side in 40 seconds smthing. Absolute swap fests, loved them
Hearing you talk about load times gave me flashbacks of playing "Is the game still loading or has the computer froze up?" My most played game on my C64 was Curse of the Azure Bonds and even with a "fast load" cartridge (remember those?) the load times were excruciating and that game did a ton of loading.
Yeah I remember those times incredibly well... I had the datasette and I thought games were still loading sometimes... then, the tape would suddenly stop and I'd quickly discovered it must have crashed mid-load, yet I'd been patiently waiting until the whole cassette tape had played right through haha 😇🕹️👌
I used to start games loading on my C64 back in the day and then go into the kitchen to make a sandwich. Have a sit down at the table, munch on the sandwich (and usually finish it) and THEN I could hear the game music coming from my bedroom (finally!) This was sort of a right of passage for the old C64.
Google reckons there was around 12.5 to 30 million C64's sold worldwide between 1982 and 1993, so this channel has the potential for a lot more viewers when they find it. Please keep on with these videos, you're doing great work - nice memories and good to see games like this that I never saw at the time. Cheers CCG!
Ahh thanks my friend, I appreciate that - I'll keep going as theres so many brilliant nostalgic memories to unlock with these games and I find that they flood straight back again when I play them. Feel free to share the love on your socials and hopefully we can grab the attention from the guys who played these games back in the day. Stay Retro! 😇🕹️👌
And that’s only people who had C64s. Those of us who had TRS-80 CoCos, 286/386 PCs, and other PCs of the time can look back at these games on the C64 with fondness too, remembering their impact on us from our platform from back in the day.
First I think I heard of this one. I always appreciated Accolade's willingness to do something different rather than keep iterating on a single idea, and they did some really innovative work along the way. Tangentially, I will mention that I think the worst game I ever encountered regarding load times and disk-swapping was the C-64 tie-in game for the movie "Willow". (Definitely not worth the wait... I don't recommend touching that one with the proverbial ten-foot pole.)
Accolade created some superb games and I am really looking forward to building upon the playlist for that Publisher! And yeah, Mindscapes 'Willow' was shocking... but, alas - I'll have to cover it someday. Gah! 😇🕹️👌
I briefly played the Apple version of this on a friend's computer when I was about 6 or so. I remember being really fascinated by how different it was from basically everything else at the time. But my place being more of an IBM PC household, I never saw it again until many years later.
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer one thing I do recall is that when I was looking through my local BBS systems in the 90s, I would see the downloadable shareware for Commander Keen games, and was disappointed that it was not actually Steve Keene. (But I did end up liking Commander Keen quite a lot anyhow)
I loved this game back in the day! I know it hasn't aged well... but at the time, I had this before I played any games by Lucasarts or Sierra Online... so this was a very interesting and new experience. Load times were terrible, yes... but I had an Action Replay cartridge that had fast load... and I "think" it worked with this game. When the fast load on that cartridge worked, it made a huge difference.
That action replay cartridge was something I really wanted back when I was a kid! A lot of my games in the 80s were played from cassette however, so I was a sucker for being patient and waiting for long-loads to finally complete! I don't think I'd have that patience now... we've all been spoilt with modern game loading times! 😇🕹️👌
I have got to find this comic book game for my Commodore 64 😹👍🕹️! I mean, it even looks absolutely retrospectively brilliant 😺👍🕹️. I still love to read the old comic books from Marvel, DC, Top Cow, Malibu and 2000AD. And let's not forget, that i also love to draw my own art works 🖋️🖊️✏️🖍️ 😺👍. By the way, who remembers the two graphical text adventure games: LES MANLEY IN SEARCH FOR THE KING and ALTERED DESTINY 😹😺👍🕹️? This video deserves a big retrospective like 👍🕹️ from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮. Thank you 😸😺👍.
Awesome, glad you enjoyed this one - not a particularly exciting videos for those who are new to the game but I am sure it will bring back a million fond memories for those like youself... who really loved this game back in the day 😇🕹️👌
I got this game as the end of my C64 days approached, so I didn't play it as much as I would've had otherwise. I really enjoyed it, but I don't remember much of it, I didn't even remember the arcade segments from this video. When I started using a C64 emulator I played this game again and it just couldn't keep me entertained anymore, so I never played it again.
Yeah I know what you mean, after 1 full run-through there just isn't enough to make you want to play through again... other than for the nostalgia 😇🕹️👌
Innovative things came from Accolade games... pioneers really. Mind you, Infocom tried their hand at some similar style games too back in 88'. Like you say though, these could have been the forerunners by decades for that genre! 😇🕹️👌
Let's face it, the C64 never loaded any game quickly. I really liked this game's comic book presentation. The devs had great ideas, I just don't think the technology was there yet
That's why I really liked my cartridge games with insta-load! I think one of the fastest loading games I ever had on cassette - was Paradroid! I was incredibly happy with that fact too as it's such a superb game. As for disks, they could be very hit and miss with loading times 😇🕹️👌
Yeah theres not a great deal happening and is always difficulty to create videos for games like this, but I guess they all need to be mentioned. This game does have a lot of nostalgic memories for me though... was nice to play it back once more! Just glad I sped the video up a little as its a slowwwww burner 😇🕹️👌
Looks and sounds like pure torture! No thanks! (Many early games I had for my unexpanded Amiga 1000 were like this, since I had only one floppy and the absolute minimum RAM required. Expanding the RAM and getting a second floppy made all the difference later on.)
It was a really immersive game back in the day and I was a massive fan of comics so this ticked a lot of boxes for me. However, a video of it doesn't do it justice as it's pretty involving once you get into the story 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer If only the 1541 floppy drive was about 10 times faster, eh? If a game's interesting enough I'll usually have the patience to tolerate the slowness. But kids today would lose interest because they're so used to everything in modern games happening within seconds.
Ah. The long loading times. The times where you would just grab a book or a cup of something. I had this game Mystery of the Arendarvon Castle, that took two sides of a tape. And it had to be loaded in full. Took about 30 minutes I htink. And it was 'just' a text adventure.
I had a copy of this, but I only ever tried playing it a couple times, as the disk swapping was ridiculous. I'm surprised that there's no EasyFlash version of it. I just took a look at the CSDB site, and there's only one copy of it available. Normally even the most obscure game will have a dozen different copies by different cracking groups. That one only has a crack by Eagle Soft, who didn't have the best track record for putting out problem-free copies. I think they were the ones who did my copy of Law of the West, that had one scene broken, and my copy of Defender of the Crown had a message at the start that said "Oops, we forgot a file!"
A very strange concept for a game however very addictive and very entertaining its the whats going to happen next syndrome that makes it for me definitely not the left right and fire game we all love / i must say Iv'e never understood the reason for punctuation arguing with my English teacher was the highlight of the lesson and getting praise for wasting time in the lesson happy days .
Haha any reason to waste time in lessons was always a bonus! We'd get our old english teacher to tell us all about his love of classic cars... that would pass half an hour or so easily 😇🕹️👌

Yes! From what I remember... I think Ultima 5 may have been the biggest offender when it came to disk swapping.

You'll love your first playthrough as its a decent story, as long as you can find an emulator and fast forward the waiting/loading times 😇🕹️👌
My 3rd favorite game back in the C64 days. OMG, great video. Thank you my friend.

another unknown game for me, cool
Graphically it looks superb! It's just a shame the loading was a bit sluggish 😇🕹️👌
Steve Keene, stack of disks as thicc as "IT", coincidence, yes i do think so.
You might be onto something 😇🕹️👌

abgefahren indeed! Especially those loading times 😇🕹️👌
Not the most exciting of games, but thanks for the memories.

This game was crazy. I owned it, but it was hard for me.
Some good memories came from this epic comicbook game... I was really gripped with the storyline as a kid 😇🕹️👌
@ I couldn’t survive past a certain point.

CSDB is a superb site to source games such as this, on easy flash conversions 😇🕹👌
They wanted to call it 'Action Comix' but they lied about having accolades instead...😅
Haha yeah that sounds about right. Did you have this one back in the day? 😇🕹👌
