  • **Sorry about my sound problem. This conversation is worth sticking around for though. ** White Women Cry and Call Me Angry w/ Yanique Redwood | Black women leaving toxic jobs | Dr. Yanique Redwood wrote the book on racism in philanthropy and the nonprofit sector. Why is there so much racism in jobs that are supposed to be "helping" professions? And how to we recognize and heal from racial trauma in the workplace? Did Yanique let their white tears "run her out of there?"

We are USED for our dedication, creativity, ingenuity, and loyalty. The MAMMY concept of us taking care of everyone but ourselves is so real!!!
Why are we allowing this? Because somewhere inside us, we believe these people will look up and accept us, and acknowledge we do have value. Girl !!! Black women are in abusive relationships and are calling it a job, a family, a marriage, a career, a commitment. Chile ✌️

Working with white women has by far been one of the most traumatic experiences of my entire life. I feel like I’m constantly getting gaslit when everyone acts like white men are the problem in the workplace. It is always been white white women for me. I am an attractive, black woman who is super confident and actually was raised and white spaces. So I just don’t come with what they expect and want to project a black woman to be. Thank you for healing and for holding the space. A lot of us suffering silence at the hands of unbelievable trauma and abuse of white women.

I found ways to maneuver through my employment while having some tough experiences with Whites, Hispanics, Asians AND Blacks. I found that I had the best experiences while in charge. (I'm highly educated with property, and a stable income.) My advice to you is to do what is best for you, even if it means to suck it up, if that is the cost to accomplish your personal goals. Good luck and know that I hope that you achieve your goals. Maybe my post made earlier today will help you. You can read it on this comment thread. Best wishes ✌🏾

I believe it's because they have been coddled and enabled all their life and cannot fathom how we can be so confident and dynamic when all of the chips are stacked against us. Our power and confidence comes from within and theirs is external (looks, material, validation, etc).

Watch all of Stephanie's videos or just wait until you're 70 like me to understand. Hopefully, you'll have lived a life of being able to tell those white women and others where to go and became an entrepreneur. I say that because people who escape these White women early enough still look young and vibrant. Most people guess my age at 45-50. And I became a civil rights activist at age 4.
However; my issue has ALWAYS been Black and White women. That's not typical. You have an opportunity to have a real life of ease. I don't. But I have 28 disciplines so GOoD gave me something else to give me grace.

The most impactful thing for me in the interview was when Yanique mentioned where she and another woman started talking about their mutual white acquaintance and the separate experiences that they had with that person but had never spoken of. We need to speak to each other, but more importantly, we need to speak to our youth.
There are so many things that we get used to in the workplace or other environments, things we find uncomfortable (or something seems 'off' with interactions) with white people that we just don't have the vocabulary for. So many times when we are being gaslit, but don't recognize it as such or microaggressions that go unchecked because we don't know how to speak about them.
We need to normalize speaking about these things to each other and our youth - and not just in a complaining way where we vent about work. We need to learn how to call out poor behavior in a productive way and how to guard against it.

Toxicity toward black women is rampant in the field of education (K-12) in the state of California. Overall there are so few black Teachers, Administrators, OT, Speech Pathologist, Counselors or Behaviorists that the environments we find ourselves in are primarily ethnically white women and other. Our co-workers are vocal (verbally or non-verbally) regarding their disdain for our presence in what they deem to be "their spaces". In addition they can be very elitist, racist or dismissive. Micro-aggressions, back/off handed crass comments, calculated /crafty/subversive and disruptive mico-managing styles, and palpable dislike are far too common in an environment that someone looking in from the outside would deem to be an altruistic field. Black Brilliance is something that other races intrinsically fight tooth and nail against, when they see us as the competition, especially if we are in our integrity and they can not directly steal , copy or try to co-op our ideas.

Racism in the workplace will never be fixed. It says in The Creator says in the Bible that..”They have a perpetual hatred for you.” I hope this answers your question.

Listening from TX. Years ago, someone told me that non-profit work wore them out. I took her word for it.

Thank you Yanique! I too will be voting in this election. Reality is important to me for sure, but I don't mostly operate as a "nay sayer". I mostly believe that where there's a will there's a way. I do know that a tribe that demands the same outcome, and is activated, is strongest.

For me being vulnerable is difficult because of the cliches I repeat to myself “No need to complain because no one wants to hear it” or “ Stop complaining and do something about it” or “Complaining is ineffective and wasteful” or I don’t want to perceived as a complainer.

Nonprofits are worse because you don't have corporate controls. beyond that any workplace can be toxic and we have to do our best to shield ourselves and find options

Greetings all. Sadly, universal themes of toxic behaviour. . Looking forward to the Exodus Summit next month, would be great to connect with other Londoners, not sure there's that many of us, but spreading the word. I'll be a first time attendee.

I couldn't agree more. I left the Democratic Party several years ago and became an Independent about your book. I can't wait to purchase it. A family friend is currently works in a Non-Profit. We've had some interesting conversations. Community is helpful, puts us in a recovery mindset, and encourages positive action for future personal success. So glad I saw this. Enriching.

Ms. Redwood’s book sounds similar to Sairo Rao book Chambermaid which she speaks of her work experience as an East Indian and American in the legal profession 😐
Ms. Redwood’s book is not on Amazon or through my library system so I will have to buy the book directly 😊

There’s more than one party. Of course there’s the Democratic Party..Republican Party, Independent Party, Green Party, Libertarian Party, and the Peace & Freedom Party. BP do not need to create their own political party. They just need to educate themselves on the ones they already exist, then align themselves with the party that comes closest to what they believe in. There’s no need to recreate the wheel. 🛞
