  • In today's entertainment industry where television shows are premiered and cancelled at a breakneck pace, it's hard to imagine a time when a TV show had a chance to actually grow on an audience. Such was the case with the now-iconic sitcom Taxi, an 18-time Emmy award winning series that focused on the workaday world of a handful of New York City taxi cab drivers, as well as their humorously ruthless dispatcher. Created by Hollywood heavyweight James L. Brooks (producer of The Mary Tyler Moore Show), Taxi chronicled the daily lives of the employees of the Sunshine Cab Company, a fictional taxi service in Manhattan. The series aired from 1978 to 1983 on ABC (and later NBC), garnering scores of awards while it was on the air, and developing an almost cult-like following that persists to this day. The Big difference between Andy Kaufman doing Vic Ferrari and Howard Hesseman doing Rip Tide was that Andy actually WAS a little bit D.I.D., whereas Hesseman was just acting....

I love this show. And Andy Kauffman was amazing. Although it kind of seems like this episode was sort of inspired by or was ripping off another similarly themed WKRP In Cincinnati episode where Johnny Fever, the DJ, morphs into a similarly sleazy and cheesy alter ego, Rip Tide. The plot is similar; they develop the alter ego for survival reasons; and for awhile it's working well for them; and the alter ego spins out of control; and all his coworkers start hating on him; until he finally has a big breakdown or crisis and switches back to his original meek persona. Since Dr. Fever and Mr. Tide aired on Feb 7 1981 and Latka The Playboy aired May 21 1981, I think we can assume the Taxi episode copied the WKRP episode.

I think Vic Ferrari was Andy being Tony Clifton without the suit and frilly shirt, but every bit as obnoxious.

Could be. But they didn't like his Tony Clifton. That's why they fired his alter ego from that episode.
