A bit of a PSA today. Even at $3k it is still not 'cheap' but is clearly MUCH better value than at $4890! Why? Not sure. A bit plain? Not a Black Bay? It doesn't bother me, I can see myself adding one of these at some point, but not this point! Cheers, Jody

My biggest reason I wasn't as drawn to the ranger vs explorer really just comes down to the dial size. I love that compact 36 dial size. If they came out with a 36mm ranger then I'd be more keen to give it a go.

36mm watch is irrelevant anymore in the modern world, particularly among sport watches.

I got a Ranger earlier this year and absolutely love it. I wanted one expensive watch in my collection and I decided on the Tudor. The one thing I’d change though is to make the luminous markers a bit thicker. They look printed and thin. I got a San Martin Black Bay Pro homage to see if I liked that better and I have to admit I do. There’s so much more going on. The Tudor BB Pro is too thick though. I’m hoping they’ll bring a thinner version out in the future. The lume on the Ranger could be better too. It’s a bit disappointing when the San Martin I got in the sale for £116 is so much better than my Ranger at £2600

Get the San Martin SN0107-G4 which is the enamel dial. The black + gilt is sensational. You can even pick up the jubilee bracelet designed for the SN0109 and it fits the 107 perfectly.

Well I purchased a new Sinn 556 RS which looks pretty much the same and while it is not an in house COSC movement, it's been running at +2 seconds per day for 2 years. I paid about $1200 on a bracelet but I mostly wear it on leather straps. I don't mind wearing a watch that say Sinn on it over one with

If Tudor changed the markers to applied indices and/or changed the shape of the font and you’d have more demand. As it stands it just looks like a watch that a 3rd grader designed. @@singha686 I thought of that while typing the initial comment, but I’m sure there’s a combo of font and marker application that would be far enough removed from the Explorer along with a brushed finish, etc etc. but yeah, I get your point. Bottom line for me, that font sucks.

There is definitely space between the Ranger now and the Explorer to allow the Ranger to be a little “better.” I find most of what Tudor puts out is just a tweak away from being amazing. I walked into my AD to purchase a Ranger upon release because I love the vintage Rangers and had been hoping for this release for a while. Once I got it on wrist it just reaaaally didn’t do it for me. 39mm seemed just too big and the markings felt… cheap? Ended up passing with a comment something along the lines of “I’ve always wanted an Explorer so I think I’ll just keep waiting for one” and low and behold they had just got one in, I tried it on and instantly fell in love and walked out with it instead. Wild turn of events.

  • @jmac316
    @jmac316 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I bought the Ranger on release and subsequently returned it to the AD after the weekend for a full refund. The bracelet and clasp was sharp and felt unfinished. The dial felt like a cop out too, for the 39mm size, it could have done with 2 lines of text at least at the bottom to fill the void at 6. Ideally it should have been 36/37mm. I think another issue was Tudor themselves over hyped it so much.

Earlier this year I wanted a watch I could wear every day. I had a hard time deciding between the Ranger, the BB 58 and the Longines Spirit. While the other two are beautiful, there was something about the Ranger's unassuming appearance that made me get it in the end. It was almost as if the other two were trying too hard to be flashy (though I have to admit the BB 925 is one I still think about).
If you prefer a more subdued watch, I'd recommend the Ranger. When it comes to build quality, it felt as solid as the Black Bay, and I'd say it's one of those that will go well with many different straps if you want to give it some more character.

I think you've nailed why tudor has grown as it has. word for word as you said: In the 90s my dad worked hard and bought a rolex, from an AD window, for about 5k.(gmt master btw!). Today 5k gets me... a shiny tudor from the tudor AD window. an experience I cannot have from rolex.

To me, this model look the best on a leather strap 🙂
But I think the dial is too large, proportions are not great. A smaller version would be better.

Agreed... it's why the Rolex 1016 Explorer works so well... 36mm, 20mm lug width... very well proportioned. Tudor Ranger was made big to be contemporary but its lost something in the proportions which in turn throws the visual design aesthetics out of whack.

I traded in my blue Pelagos for the Ranger and I am very happy with the choice. There are days when I still eye up the BB58, or the new BB58 GMT, but for some reason, I just keep coming back to my Ranger. It feels like home...and when you think of a watch, it looks like a watch. It reminds me of some of the cool sports and luxury cars from the earlier years when they would have clocks in the dash. For summer, I have it on a Crown & Buckle Chevron Adjustable strap...sort of a drab olive green with a gold stripe down the center. Looks awesome.
Thanks for all the great content Jody. My wife knows exactly what I am watching when she hears your opening line, and I love her impression of it too :)

In the UK the Ranger and a Black Bay 58 are £600 apart and I can definitely convince myself to buy the 58 over the ranger because of its features, looks, recognition, etc. even if I am dead set on the former. I can just imagine being drawn in by that bezel action and putting down the ranger

I've seen the Ranger for under $3,000 USD on eBay. I like it, but the Tudor I've been aiming for is the blue ETA BB36. That's as much as I'd want to spend on a watch outside of winning the lottery and getting a new Aqua Terra!

The boringness of the printed dial is why I switched my Hamilton Khaki Mechanical 38mm for the 36.4mm Seiko SRPJ. I don’t have particularly small wrists (love my Duros), but I think field watches just look best small (the 40mm SRPG felt monstrously large). Knowledge that the Hamilton is “better” isn’t enough, since the Seiko is more visually engaging. The brushed/applied indices really captured my imagination. I wish it stuck with 20mm lugs rather than dropping to 18mm, but I’m willing to live with it.
I’m imagining a Ranger, but the indices are applied (Orient Mako 3 does it). Maybe it stays with batons for the non-Arabics, maybe circles like a Black Bay, or squares like a Pelagos. And maybe snowflake hands. Part of the appeal of the Explorer is the Mercedes hands like a Submariner. Part of the appeal of the Seiko DressKX is the same hands as the SKX diver. As divisive as the hands can be, that handset says Tudor Diver, so why not stick with them?

Size. Size killed it, just like it's 41mm predecessor. It should've been 36mm or 37mm maximum. I've got the Watch Dives 36mm homage of the new Ranger, and it is damn near perfect, especially with its VK31 mecaquartz, it's the perfect grab and go watch. It is absolute vanilla ice cream in the best possible way.

My niggles are that they should have made all the lume out of the molded lume from the Black Bay Pro. I think they messed up by shrinking it to compete with the explorer. The older reference was a bit larger which applies to the garish nature of customers that Tudor tends to bring, the more manly industrious fella that might work a more manual job. I don’t know, but Tudors original flavor, at least in my opinion, used to be a bit more working class. With this modern shrink everything vibe, it doesn’t play to the folks that wanna feel the money that they spend. Hopefully I’m articulating my point, probably playing more into generalizations.

I think this is a great watch. The Ranger history is different than the Black Bay line. I don’t get why people don’t see it as an Explorer alternative. The printed text etc rather than applied makes it a bit retro to me. I liked the design enough to get the San Martin 37mm homage of it. If I had the funds I would pick the Tudor up and give the San Martin away
