    I love that you pick a lot of less popular and obscure games to highlight how cool fmv was. It’s easy to just point to square enix’s catalogue, but there are so many other good examples

      Thank you!! Square Enix is great but the obsure and less popular stuff is always super fun to research. Glad you enjoyed!😄

    I still think the FMV's of Resident Evil Remake 1 are the height of what can be done. Even now, I think no Resident Evil has come close to replicating the "horror" off that gamecube game, which is insane.
    FMV's also made moments like Aerith's 🗡 memorable.
    Great video again!

    • @irislyoko
      @irislyoko  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Totally agree, there's something that has almost been lost over time and the FMVs can't quite be replicated the same way. It's insane for sure, but that's why it makes it so great to look back on them :)
      I'm happy you enjoyed the video and thank you so much for commenting!

    There’s an indie game called Alisa that recently came out which is one of the few PS1 styled indies to actually include FMV cutscenes in that style. As various animation tools become more accessible, I would love if more indie games get to replicate the late 90’s/early 2000’s look.

    • @irislyoko
      @irislyoko  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Ohh yes Alisa has been on my wishlist for a while!! I didn't know that it includes FMV cutscenes though which is amazing - thank you for commenting!! I agree, I would also love to see more indie games try out the 90s/early 2000s look- there's so much potential!

    I adore fmvs despite never growing up with them (since I was a baby) I was always drawn to the inherent dreamy feel they incite! Thank you for introducing a lot of new games I’ve never heard of

    Old CGI cutscenes in games always felt like a reward, because there were usually only a couple of them and they were short. Games can look amazing nowadays, to the point where gameplay and cutscenes look the same. That combined with how it feels like a lot of the triple A games have too many cutscenes just makes it way less rewarding and skippable

    I still own ( Blam) Machinehead ( PS1 version) and I still play it on my PS2, the intro and game used to scare the crap outta me when I was a kid, the whole game had an uncanny feeling.

      Yes exactly! Even now I feel like I get sucked in more with older CGI, compared to any newer more realistic stuff.

    Nothing beats a good opening! As you say the just hype you up! Soul cailbur and tekken where the Kings of openings for games to me! Though if your looking for some cool pre-rendered backgrounds in games, Fear Effect might be one for you to check out!

    Baroque for the sega saturn and ps1 has a very interesting artstyle. the FMV cutscenes are also pretty good. My favorite dreamcast game is one called "Despiria" its a Myst style JRPG where all the graphics are prerendered and it has a dark and merky dystopian feel to it was some gross looking monster designs. It's one of the most Unique looking games ive ever seen

      I've heard of "Despiria" but I've never played it! I love the combination of dystopia and prerendered graphics - from screenshots alone it does look really really cool. Thank you for sharing :D

    Lyoko is for code lyoko? Cuz im a fan
    Edit: Answered at the end of the vid so nevermid!
    I wanted to add, its true that the look of many games using prendered graphics adds a lot to the mood. Toriko on sega saturn is one i remember for example or Juggernaut for the ps1.
    Also i played Amerzone just 3 or 4 years ago and i remember it looking so gorgeus for a 15 year old game!

    I do love pre rendered fmvs for two reasons. First, the gamey design philosophy that was nust imposed by the technology limitations. You just can't constantly interrupt game play with faux gameplay that is just some hollywood action sequence where you have to hold foward all the time so the player can be psychologically conned into thinking they're playing not just watching. So you don't do that, and you don't design a game around that, you design a game where the non fmv session is mostly actual play.
    Second, because the fmv made better graphics but not pseudo realistic ones yoo well, it forced artists to make their own style, which is much more timeless than "as much realism as the technology allows, which means it will look dated in a but a few years". Stylized art is literally most art throughout human history for a reason, and that reason is not mere lack of technology.
