I work in the wool industry and have been to farms on shearing day. The sheep DO love getting sheared and it is like getting a haircut on a really hot day. When finished they run off kicking their heels up.
Only 5 of the many breeds of sheep will shed their hair. They are known as hair sheep and they are bred for meat. It is not the same as wool sheep that are grown for their wool.

Shearing sheep last night with my sisters . It was a blast from the past! It gradually came back to us, the Oz method. 35 plus years since we sheared. Fun. Fun. Fun
there's 2 type of people in this world people that are ass holes to sheep's and people that are good to sheep , PETA'S thing wasn't a lie there are a lot of people who sheared sheep while they hate theme on the ground but well not all people do it , not all people that sheared sheep's are heartless as holes , also i wanna say this is the farm was not the commercial factory way , but hey what do i know PETA is full of shit from time to time
Sheep actually like being sheared, it cools them off in the summer and people use the wool instead of throw it away. It also doesn't hurt the sheep at all, it's like getting a hair cut.
When sheep was kicking a bit, she was in an awkward position on her butt which caused her to be annoyed. Many shearers will lay them on their side for those long passes with their toe under their shoulder to keep control of the sheep. It can be hard, however, to reach when sheep are on their side. Truly the sheep feel so much better after. They can handle a lot of bad weather with their fleeces on, but are so glad to get rid of them in summer.
I'd like to know why there are so many down votes? This method looks incredibly efficient, but this is the first sheep shearing video I've seen. Def. will try this on my Suffolks when my shears get here.
Those shown by PETA do actually also occur - but they are dodgy untrained cowboys with poor ethics. Do your research and only choose wool from known sources.
Not true, if you damage a sheep then you're loosing money, they're not that damn stupid. If you kill or injure a sheep then you lose profit, each sheep produces about $1000000 worth of wool in it's life and you loose MASSIVE profit with each killing or injury. I assure you they are this careful, just quicker in real life.
You can still earn profit even though you cut the sheep. And lots of it. Sheep can heal, by the time they grow back their fur the scars will be gone. And in peta they didn't kill the sheep, they punched and kicked them, which causes them pain but doesn't cause any major injury.
During the shearing, the sheep looks a little annoyed, but doesn’t look like he/she in any pain or major distress. The sheep that are sheared seem to be happy that the wool is off and doesn’t seemed to faced any mental distress from the whole ordeal. If sheep can be sheared in this fashion. And the sheep are cared for year around and given room roam, I don’t see any issue using wool products.

I'd like to challenge a PETA nut to wear a heavy sweatshirt in the summer and see how THEY feel. That is what a sheep would feel like if they don't shear them in the summer.
PETA is extreme group that tend to cause more harm than good but they never claimed that all farmers harm their sheep just that some do. I for one know that it is a fact that some farmers slice up, hit, kick, punch, and abuse their sheep during the shearing process (I have worked in the farming industry and have seen it with my own eyes). I give the benefit of the doubt to most farmers being good to their livestock however to act like abuse doesn’t happen is foolish to say the least
@@alistairclement4239, yes, I realize now that rams are not gentle, and mother ewes can get rough too if you're messing with their lambs. Other than that, I still think sheep are gentle, as long as you have sheep with no rams and you're kind to all the wethers, ewes, and lambs
@@alistairclement4239, that's true. Such as picking up a lamb that's not well to take its temperature, and maybe give it medicine. You're just trying to help it, but the mother sheep thinks you're taking it away from her or maybe trying to harm it. That's natural mother instincts also, but yes, because she's a sheep, she doesn't understand that you're only helping her lamb, and helping her too by keeping her from possibly losing her lamb if her illness wasn't treated
I remember going to Australia and watching a sheep sheering contest their were a ton of sheep in the place and the people who would check the wool to see I don’t know if it’s got a high quality i guess made us touch some of the wool for a while and it’s so soft to touch I thought it was gonna be a weird feeling but it felt like a coat
Actually they don't, their brain scans suggest pleasure afterwards. Edit. Apologies read your comment as Uncomfortable. The point still stands. Many Peta followers use the logic that this is inhumane. The sheep need to be sheered
I really don’t understand why PETA hates it when sheep farmers do this to their sheep it must actually feel good to the sheep to get all that heavy hot wool off of them. I completely support the wool industry I love wool blankets and sweaters. And plus it’s not like the wool farmers are skinning their sheep they are just sheering them it’s just like getting a shave/haircut for them it’s not like their in pain sure it might be a little awkward and/or slightly uncomfortable for the sheep but in all seriousness they are being treated fine.
I've read that hand shearing allows more of the lanolin layer to remain on, and it's better for the animal vs the electric shears. Do you agree at all?
Sheep don't really like pets except from trusted people and really only under their ears. As prey animals, they are often leary of movement and touching them. Sheep that were bottle fed, are a little more interested in attention.
Thanks for doing this in a kind way. Many other wool industries kick, throw, and punch the sheep while shedding their wool. In the end, these sheeps bleed and face agony. But thank you for doing it kindly
As a shepherd, I know of zero shepherds that would do any of what you describe. These animals are precious to us - their health is paramount - we spend day and night 24/7 caring for them. No shepherd would risk injuring their animals. I don't know where this myth of poor treatment keeps getting perpetuated. There may be some bad apples, but they would be rare. I literally fired a shearer after he had shorn a few - his blades were dull, not cutting well and cutting my sheep. Shepherds do not tolerate poor treatment from those they hire.
Where do you get shavers like that? And how much do they cost? I have cheap dog shavers and they don’t even cut my dog’s hair. I know for good dog shavers, it’s like 400$ for good ones
Sheep shearers have very wide teeth and can easily cut skin - not good for dogs. The lanolin in the wool lubricates the clippers too. Sheep clippers start around $400 but quickly go up. This guy's cost atleast $1000. His blades cost about $10 each.
A stressed sheep would be kicking legs and baaing. They have a spooked and panicked look when scared. This girl had been shorn before - knew what was going on. She was totally at ease.
Notice how all the wool mostly stuck together in one sheet? When a dog has fur like this, it's called 'matted', and it's VERY uncomfortable. Having it all knotted together like that makes it pull on the skin when the animal moves. Imagine your hair is so knotted together, you can't possibly brush it out. It's one giant mess on your head.
