I was raised on a sheep farm. I helped with the shearing. My Dad seldom cut the sheep. If he did, he put an antiseptic on it. The sheep didn't struggle once they knew what was happening. Our sheep were handled with care. They are GENTLE ANIMALS, no need for ruffness. The people in this video are cruel money lovers.

I'm not making it past the first 20 seconds. Disgusting. We are given the animals on this planet to steward. The other vids on this channel are similarly disturbing. It's why I pick my American/local food producers carefully and try to NEVER eat commercial slaughterhouse meat by choice. Now I'll have to try to check where the materials (wool) in my clothing is sourced, too.

I homestead. I'm not normally upset by videos, I know the reality. But this one needed a comment left.
Those sheep had some pretty long, deep cuts. I'm shocked that a professional setup would do that - and nothing put on those areas to prevent flies from attacking. The fleeces had areas of blood on them when they were being skirted. Dang...I thought in today's modern world we did a little better by the sheep. I just sheared one of mine today, one small nick and we treated it. I used hand shears too, those electric ones can really cut a sheep badly if not done carefully. Makes the wool industry go down a notch in my mind... The rest of the video was interesting on a large scale model, I just couldn't get past those sheep with gaping wounds and the blood on the fleeces (tells you the cuts were deep).

@@loumason6120 bending the sheep's neck backwards like that is a common sheep handling method. It is uncomfortable but not painful to the sheep done to encourage the sheep to stay still for the safety of both the shearer and the sheep. As for the shearing like they don't care about cutting it... It may appear that way to you but in order to get the best cuts each blow of the clippers needs to be fast and confident. This prevents machinery from seizing up and causing injury, and also minimises the time the sheep is being restrained for. Cuts are unfortunately common in the shearing shed but most are small and caused by a slight movement in the sheep, skin issues or a problem in the blades of the machine. Fortunately most of these should be minor cuts that heal naturally and are protected by a sheep's lanolin.

My grandparents owned a sheep shearing business. If they had someone that tore up a sheep like the first guy in this video, he would have been off the plant faster than he could get that fleece to the wool sack. Our dogs we used to help get the sheep from the fields to the pens and chutes - they weren't allowed to abuse them either. In fact we bred our border collies to ensure they were more biddable and able to work sheep without injury to them. Sheepmen (Shepards) needed their stock treated well and kept healthy. It's too bad that today's industry doesn't seem to value that integrity of the profession anymore.

Traditional shearers are gentle and professional. There is a great respect for the sheep. What is a shame is that the wool market has become so specialized. There are many places that give about 50 cents per coat and it costs the farmer up to $15. To get the shearing done. For most shepherds it is about the sheep’s comfort more than the wool product. But if wool were more widely used in clothing and people realized just how warm and comfy it can be..the mills would have to pay much more.

    • @lynnsey9343
      @lynnsey9343 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

Actually it's harder to find people that practice humane shearing, farming of the sheep these days is generally trash especially in cultures that have more sheep to shear. The more sheep the less it matters to them, production gets faster and the demand is higher, so lower quality work is often the result. And besides general laborers on farms make such little money they don't care.

As a person who grew up on a farm, here's some info for ya:
The sheep does need to be 'upside doesn't in order for it to be less likely to wriggle. The sheep wriggling is what causes most cuts. It does seem like there are more cuts than I would expect here though. If the shearer accidentally made a small cut we would immediately spray it with antiseptic which is marked with a purple dye so you can see it has been treated, and if it was any bigger than a tiny bit we might put a kind of tape on it (like a sheep plaster). Most sheep we had would emerge without cuts.
Shearing is neccesary because modern sheep breeds don't shed their wool in summer and are more likely to get heat stroke, undetected maggots (which eat the sheep alive) if not shaven, and would eventually find it hard to walk if their wool was left to grow for years

I watch a traveling shearer who takes her time to get smooth blankets and makes every effort to ensure the sheep, llama or alpaca is safe and comfortable the whole time. But the guys in these clips were awful, I don't care how many you have to do, those sheep can deal with waiting if it means they won't get practically butchered to get sheared

Я шью и вяжу для себя и родных. Какое наслаждение касаться хорошего материала. А как глаза радуются, видя блеск шерсти или шелка!) Спасибо Вам за чудесный ролик! Наслаждалась и удивлялась!

It's hard to explain but most animals are different than us when it comes to tolerance and strength. A majority of humans have become more gentle living in safer and cushioned environments so our tolerance in evolution has gone down and to get back up we need to build it individually.
Sheep are part of the animal kingdom that still live in the outdoors all their life on the earth full of hard minerals.
You will see the difference if you put one human in normal housing circumstance and one out in the wild to fend for themselves.
If you bring them together years later there will be a significant difference in mentality and physical attributes (even if the normal society human works out and lifts weights it will still be different due to the experiences)
HOWEVER, them cutting the sheep to where it bleeds is not supposed to happen.

Sheep are a lot more tough. Most farms are way worse about it too. By the way, the sheep was not bleeding from handling. It was small nicks from the razor. I remember shaving a sheep at my grandparents ranch. Their skin is full of folds so it’s really easy to nick. Ps, that wasn’t rough because you need to hold a sheep down or else it will kick and buck and get nicks from the razor. They did it in a really safe way.

Honestly, I think the problem here is that you are viewing these animals as your income and objects for human consumption rather than the living creatures they are. I am opposed to banning wool-I am even opposed to banning meat, although I am a vegetarian myself. The key is compassion. You need to be humane, and the handling of the poor, hapless creatures in this video is anything but. I know you probably won't see this and all the more so won't care, but I ask you to please reconsider your methods. These animals need to be cared for. They don't mind servicing you, they ask only to be loved in return. Thank you.

The cuts that I saw are superficial and will not be treated by the rancher, they will heal in about 2 days and leave no scar. Really deep cuts may require stitching and that is the shearer's responsibility. I've sheared 16 years and I've had to sew a few up, sometimes they will kick at the wrong moment and accidents happen. I don't like cutting them anymore than any of you here. Any shearer that says he hasn't cut a sheep or never had to stitch one up is a liar. But the cuts in the video are on the "money side" and there is no excuse for cuts there. Likely his comb is too sharp and he doesn't want to stop and "point" his comb because the money is really good. 300 sheep shorn in one day = $500
