Cool to see you try out the Lofi-12. I did some of the factory content, specifically the 80's patterns. It has some really decent polyphony abilities. Can sound really neat with melodic instruments.
The Korg DSS-1 is underrated as a synth. It does everything the DW8000 does plus oscillator sync, waveform drawing, additive wave creation, a 2nd mod delay, and sampling!
It’s because the DSS1 has the unique combination of peak 80s oblique operating system and weighing as much as a baby hippopotamus. DWs are creeping up though.
I have the DSS1 and wanted to know if its possible to upgrade it before I sell it? Great sounds but I feel the old disk drive is so obsolete. I have seen videos of people swapping it out for an SD card reader, but I'm not sure how to get the sounds transferred
Very Euro cinematic style - and it seems I'm not the only one who felt this. The raspy lofi beatbox with the more "hifi" Korg + reverb is a pairing that really works. Nice chord changes. So many possible visuals would sit with this, as long as they are from a 1980's European film of course. Even Vangelis would not be unhappy with this little piece.
Always was a big fan of DSS-1 but when it came to buy went with S-10 the korg was a little bulky & the Roland had that special low register sound as we're both aware of but good stuff anyway EK (wasn't even aware of that other piece kit) thanx again dude
Thanks! I try to steer away from all those generic totally utterly boring "run of the mill" video reviews that pesters the world when manufacturers mass send gear out to the so called influencers. ;-)
Your music is incredible! Atomic Winter has been on my playlists ever since I heard it 😀 And so many other songs! Your voice is amazing! Love your channels! 🎉
Beautiful! Well done, Espen 👏 I've had 2 Dss-1's in the past. Regret selling them but what can you do? Can't keep them all, and Dss-1 is huge! A cheap contender to Emax? Different but sounds gorgeous. Always looking fwd to seeing your new videos ♥
Still have my DSS-1. We kindly called it “The Fridge.” Very underrated for sound design. Friend of mine and band mate was an absolute wiz at sampling and creating other worldly sounds with it. Back in the 90’s There were some great sound sets for it as well. We used to sample loops of our own tracks, then edit and fly back in for a remix effect. I’m wondering if the Lo-Fi could use a few more updates 🤔
Two different species here, but if given the choice between choosing a DSS-1 or an Oberheim Matrix 6 which would be preferred for overall tonal capabilities? Cheers & thank you!
The sound of it is really cool and it has a quite authentic tone to its engine and output. To me the ergonomics and layout, as well as the form factor, together with mini jacks and all that... well, it's not my cup of tea in that sense.
Au pétard / c’est vraiment impressionnant. Reste est-ce que ce matos peut éditer toutes ces notes jouées / bien sûr séparément tous les instruments simulés ?
I have a DSS-1 and a DS-8. Did you replace your display yourself, or have someone else do it? It looks really nice! My DSS-1 needs a new display - no backlight at all - really hard to see. Was also thinking of doing something with conversion of the hard drive to usb. Any advice or recommendations on where to get upgraded display, or replacement?
The Liven has me interested as a more portable alternative to my Akai X7000, which I use as a source of drum samples (I have the memory expansion, so can fit a respectable number of sounds on it). All the reviews I've seen demonstrate the Liven with drum loops and an emphasis on the groovebox type of features rather than as a more old school drum machine, so I'd be fascinated if you could show whether it is good for that approach.
Not doing any more videos with it. I can say that to me it's not suitable as a old drum machine replacement at all. Much too cluttered with features and intricate ways to use them. It's in reality built for the desktop groove generations. Not necessarily a bad thing, but not for me. The sound it makes are pretty spot on though, and I could easily (as I do here) use this for the sound alone, very authentic.
@@EspenKraft Sounds like it's not what I'm looking for then! Something like the Isla Instrument S2400 would be perfect, but it's way out of my price range unfortunately.
I guess I should just start saving for an S2400 then. I have owned an E-mu SP12 in the past, complete with an enormous Commodore 1541 disk drive, and I loved the "workflow" on that machine. I replaced it with an Akai MPC for convenience reasons (the SP12/1541 combo was huge), but as good as the later Akais are I couldn't get on with it.
I don't use any of the SP functionality at all with my S2400, nor do I sample into it. I only use it with pre-made samples I load in as kits so I can make drum machine patterns with it. That's it. ;-)
I wish someone would do a detailed video on how to use the DSS-1. The manual is terrible. it is overly complex. I have one and while I have managed to put sounds in and get sounds out, I am on the fence with it, and may throw it into the garbage. I am much happier with my EPS16 plus and other older gear.
@@EspenKraft I think I watched it. There is a bit of a gap in the information people post. I have specific questions such as: How does the assigned root note affect the sample. Is it merely as a reference so the synth knows to use that note as the associated pitch key before you tune it?
This really sounds like a tv or film soundtrack. As always, great work Espen! Sounds like a cross between Vangelis and Jan Hammer.
Cheers!
Reminds me of the soundtrack to Thief.
That low end on the DSS-1, wow

The DSS' horns are amazing, they sound like CS80, bravo!
Cheers!
Found this one very compelling. Fantastic envelopes on the pad truly brought out the emotion.
Many thanks!
Holy shit that sounds perfect, instant childhood memories/dreams like
Cheers!
DSS-1 and DW6000 are the two 80s synths that still command low prices despite heaps of power.
It’s because the DSS1 has the unique combination of peak 80s oblique operating system and weighing as much as a baby hippopotamus. DWs are creeping up though.
@@gunark Once you have the samples loaded, it's not really a terrible UI. And isn't there adequate software solution now?

super relaxing !

finally a different style then these hiphop lo-fi beat whatever music everyone seems to be making with this sampler

Great! Sounds like Vangelis.
Not my intention, but thanks! ;-)

I think the DSS-1 is best when used as a synth. I find myself never using it for sampling, but much more as a synth.
Two different species here, but if given the choice between choosing a DSS-1 or an Oberheim Matrix 6 which would be preferred for overall tonal capabilities? Cheers & thank you!
Very different. One is a sampler with powerful synth capabilities. The other one a great synth on its own.
Is it a keeper and does it bring anything new on the table for you compared to what you already have? ;) [You can also go "lo-fi" mode on your S2400?]

All questions must be in English. Said it many times. Otherwise I don't answer.

Quite easy replacement of the display. Did it myself. Search on Ebay for it.
How do you like the Lofi-12 Espen?
Lovely tune and cheers from neighbor Sweden ❤
I don't like it enough to use it any more. ;-)
@@EspenKraft Alright 😂

The S2400 is fantastic and my old drum machine replacement. It's not cheap though admittedly.

What Korg DSS-1 sample-patch library did you use?
Just the piano, from the factory DSS-1 library. The two other sounds are custom work.
😯 This is a special track!! 💯💯
I hope I can catch the livestream (forget the Akai, I need to know how this is like the Casio!) 🤞🤞
Cheers!
does this thing got automatic chord recognition ?
Awsome! Nearly made me look for my skin-tight jeans and magenta and turquoise shirt ;)
Sweet!

What you're after is a video manual then. That would be a 9-10 hour long video. Or more. Not doable for anyone.
Well. And after this you said me you never interested in sequencers/grooveboxes =))
I'm not.
Your instrumentals are much better than your songs.
Then you're out of luck, because I mainly make vocal based music. ;-)
yeah very blade runneresque ....with a bit of top gun's drum's 😀
