Last time I had this much of enjoyment from dogfights was the mirage vs mirage video, where you both landed shots inside the cockpit... You've come a long way GS. keep grinding brother.
Manual Wing Sweep vs Raptor? P.S. Could you please make a video where you explain all the types of dogfights (1 & 2 Circle) a bit more in detail than nose to nose and nose to tail? Also, could you please explain how an aircraft can be good at one, and not quite so at the other? Thanks GS!
One circle is turning into each other after the merge forming on circle by the time they meet nose to nose. Two circle is where one that aircraft turns the opposite way so he'll come around nose to tail. If they were taking smoke you would see a single O in the sky when they meet after the turn. In a two circle you'd see smoke in the shape of an 8. Aircraft that have better sustained turn rates are better in two circle. Aircraft that can make a really tight single turn at the cost of a lot energy are better in the one circle.
There are a ton of variable that determine how well an aircraft can do 1 circle VS 2 circle. Even things like the shape of the engine intakes can limit your angle of attack. Everything is trade offs about things like cruise efficiency, payload, AOA, sustained turn rates, max speed, stability, ect... Even the F-22 is full of compromises to practical utility at the expense of dog fight performance.
That was some nice dogfighting. I will say, there's a reason the Tomcat stuck around as long as it did. AFAIK its main downfall was the maintenance on those aging swing wings.
Imagine what an F-14 E (The Super Tomcat) could have done. Fly by wire with relaxed stability. Improved control surfaces. LERX. Improved flaps and spoilers. Improved flight computer for wing control. Possibly even vectored thrust.
That's the B cat. Those massive GE F110's made the TOMCAT awesome. I remember reading about real life F14 pilots when the B first got to the fleet, no more engine restrictions and stupid levels of thrust, they gave a lot of F18's a run and surprised a few, some F15's were caught by surprise as well.
Coming straight from Warbirds into the F-14 is a transition that just works. It’s got quirks that you don’t have to deal with in other crates, but it’s got to be easier than coming from a FBW aircraft.
I feel like there were some missed Fox-2 opportunities when the hornet was high above the nose but past min-range. Maybe try using VSL-HI (you can’t see the diamond until it’s locked) to get those off-bore shots. You can also use (or in addition to lock) the CAGE-SEAM button which uncages the seekers in a pattern around the cross or radar lock, and the seekers will track targets that way too, instead of needing to pull the bandit into the cross for tone.
I've found that the first turn on the tomcat is the tightest around .65 mach. Keeping an eye on the mach indicator going into the merge might improve your initial turn circle.
The F-14 was always a far more capable than people think, mostly because it was such an old design. In reality, the Superhornet only had a few advantages over it, most of them relating to cost and ease of maintenance. As far as performance, the Superhornet has a much lower RCS and high AoA ability. That's about it. The Tomcat had a better turn rate, better range, better speed and better climbing.
Thanks for the lesson. Actually tried the manual sweep thing after the last video, gives me a lot more chances to face off the Hornet. I think the Hornet is definitely a top tier dogfighter in DCS. Especially after the lately updates(I don’t know if ED changed anything but it did not give me such headaches like it does now). It could keep up a similar sustain rate on the deck with a Tomcat, and with the high alpha authority, some time it could have more snapshot opportunities than the Tomcat. It could out rate F-16s( I don’t think it’s realistic), it has HMD and 9Xs, and it murders almost everybody in one circle. As a new Tomcat guy with only 250hrs, I recently became fairly confident to face off most of fighters (especially other Tomcats for they usually don’t fly well), except Hornet and Mirage……My KD ratios against Hornets and Mirages are horrible. And my aim sucks, missed lots chances.
Some nice recognition that us ladies fly too.... Oh it was a term of endearment to the guys... Oh 😞 how rooooood 😜😘 Great video, I should practice more in the cat, I always end up stalling a wing going into the merge and end up spinning, I can often pull it out of the vomit inducing scenario, but I've lost my edge in bfm with it, the hornet However, she seems to fly herself to victory 🤣

I've installed DCS at last and I'm learning to fly the P-51. It's not coming easily but I want a Mosquito for your server eventually. Intruder missions truly appeal.
GS is taking out the trash again. How about a series of videos regarding extending? Not one DCS channel has covered this subject... this and sideslipping when too high and fast on final. You will be the first to cover when to exit the fight (losing cues - 3/9 line), how long (miles) to extend to, when to pitch back into the fight, and if this pitch back is horizontal or vertical. For example, 1 circle in the Hornet and then extend. Extend 3 miles then pitch back to merge for the 1 circle again hoping to lure a 2 circle fighter (Viper) into YOUR fight. Run a series of videos on how to best extend for each fighter. If F-15 is losing the 1 circle with the Hornet or Mirage, what is the Eagle's exit/extend strategy? Ditto for the F-14. The Tomcat unloads best at half a G. Is this the same for the others? Reading numerous engagements between the F-4 and the MIG-17, the strategy was to unload to 3 miles, pitch back into the fight with no less than 550 kts on the clock. When engaged with the MIG-17 or even the 19, 350 kts was the speed to exit the fight and extend to re-build the energy; reset the fight. The F-4 when turning, has 15 times the drag of the F-16. Meanwhile, keep up the great videos. Your recent F-15 DCA video was epic.
I think the agreement with "It's not fair", is the difference between fair play and being fair. Fair play; not camping Airstrips, not rigging or exploiting a game. Being sporting, letting the other players have a chance. Being fair; being equal, starting the same, no advantage. It is always good to have fair play, being fair is something done, case by case.
That manual sweep thing is quite interesting - I think I remember an interview with Dave "Bio" Baranek where he said that pilots would basically always leave the sweep on auto since there was no good reason for manual (iirc, that is, my memory may be playing tricks on me). I'm genuinely curious if this performance gain in certain situations may be actually realistic or more of an exploit of the physics model.
It makes complete sense to do this in a pure turn fight, in real life or dcs. The massive reduction in induced drag is why the f14 has variable sweep wings in the first place - to enable it to turn. They start sweeping back below mach 1, so keeping them forward always is certainly an advantage, and the performance gain is completely accurate in doing so
The manual wing-sweep performance king of gets you wondering why they swept at all. For climbing straight wings can't be beat, as all that lift gives you about 5:1 lever on thrust. Imagine if they'd used that swing-wing weight for better engines. What killed swing-wing, I mean, beyond the horrific performance cost of all the weight, was stealth. Even if you have an otherwise perfect stealth geometry, there's only one wing sweep that is compatible with it, so variable-sweep is a no-go. Canards are the obvious answer to providing the high AOA needed for carrier landings, which is why most of the Su had them, and so does the Rafale. Not sure canards can be made all that stealthy though, as I'm not aware of any canard stealth aircraft. Odd thing about the canards, they always feature aspect ratios that suck, so guessing they don't have or trust their FBW flight controls, so the canard has to stall B4 the wing, making them pretty draggy. Unlike the Israeli Airforce, the USAF seems pigheadedly reluctant to tamper with anything. No CFTs for the Viper, very late in fixing the AIM-9 with the X, late with the AIM-120C/D fixes, no canards for Viper or Eagle. They did a Viper with strakes in front, just like in back, and the AOA was ~ 25 degrees greater, THAT would be handy in a 1-Circle. Neither has thrust-vectoring either. The F-15EX, at a minimum should have a FBW system that produces "negative stability" (the tail is a lifting body, & FBW eliminates Trim Drag) and 3D thrust vectoring. Nope, it's F-22 or nothing. SMH. Look how far beyond the Viper the Sufa has become. It is nice to see a plane like the Tomcat where the pilot makes all the difference, but you can't win wars with aircraft like that. You need something fool-proof, bc in a peer-to-peer conflict when you suffer pilot losses those pilots die too, and morale and confidence dies with them unless you have much better tech. IE: Dozens of Nazi pilots had over 50 confirmed kills, around 5 got 100 or so, and at least 1 well over 100, but Nazi Germany still lost the war. BVR wins wars bc you can get 5:1 kills day after day. The West should be more careful to insure we WILL win the BVR fight.
Below corner speed instantaneous turn radius is determined by how much lift the aircraft can generate, relative to its weight (i.e.aircraft with a lower stall speed can turn tighter). That's determined by wing loading, aspect ratio and airfoil geometry (including flaps). Above corner speed, it is determined by the load factor limit of the airframe, and the speed. Instantaneous turn rate (i.e. one circle turn rate) is determined by the same variables, but also by the speed even at speeds below the corner speed.
1 there is no skill in that, 50/50 chance of someone killing the other person, and 2nd it wouldn’t be worth making a video if someone gets shot in the face at the start. 3 it doesn’t allow us to explore any capabilities of the aircraft.

What physical characteristic of a plane determines a good turn radius in the one circle?
Below corner speed instantaneous turn radius is determined by how much lift the aircraft can generate, relative to its weight (i.e.aircraft with a lower stall speed can turn tighter). That's determined by wing loading, aspect ratio and airfoil geometry (including flaps). Above corner speed, it is determined by the load factor limit of the airframe, and the speed.
Instantaneous turn rate (i.e. one circle turn rate) is determined by the same variables, but also by the speed even at speeds below the corner speed.
