Several people have mentioned the plot of the movie, "The Final Countdown." If you haven't seen it, once you do, you will understand why we want this fulfilled. Send the F-14A Tomcat into Dec 5, 1941 please. Thank you GS.
"Where is he getting all this energy?" My brother, that plane isn't big for aesthetics. It got a huge PW-2800 and a giant(super?) turbo charger in it. It's held back by the prop more than anything.
The R-2800, as installed in the P-47 was both turbo and mechanically supercharged, with the turbo supercharger in the aft fuselage feeding a mechanically driven centrifugal supercharger mounted to the back of the engine.
People forget that, while sure, it is heavy, it isn't as heavy as it looks. Due to its sophisticated turbocharger system, It's half air ducts. IT'S NOT FAT, IT'S LUNG VOLUME!!!
Imagine coming out of your cottage on a nice and sunny Spring day to tend to your garden and dairy cow and then having a bunch of .50 cal and 20mm shell casings come raining down on you.
Shotgun is fearless. He reverses the turn to go into a slight negative G maneuver back into the reverse. 4:48 lol Don't know if that was intentional or not but he is slippery for sure. Great vid as usual. Well done sir.
You DEFINITELY need to do more against Shotgun. It's awesome to see you ACTUALLY challenged, fighting someone who is at least your equal. And Shotgun has EXCELLENT throttle management in that plane.
Most don't understand how big it was..the airframe was constructed around what is essentially a "small" locomotive turbo and it's piping. it had to be located behind the pilot because it was too big to fit up front
It was meant to be a bomber escort. Then when the P-51 came along it found new life as a fighter bomber and CAS. Ironically enough, the P-51 was meant for CAS, but was too fragile to take ground fire and due to its range and dogfighting capabilities it became a good bomber escort. while the Jug, who could absorb all types of damage, filled the role that the P-51 was meant to fill.
It’s not about aerial victories it’s about win to loss ratio. Those numbers are probably pretty skewed if you think about. A plane that is mass produced or made in large numbers will always have a high winning rate.
There's a great book, "Thunderbolt" by Robert Johnson, detailing his experience becoming an Ace in the P47, alongside Francis Gabreski in the 56th Fighter Group in Europe. Some things that stick out from this video -- he always boasted about the P47's "zoom climb," where they'd trade speed for short-term climb, and noted that in the later models when they were fitted with paddle-blade propellers the "zoom" never stopped and they could just hang on the motor and CLIMB. Also many call-outs to the Bf109's wing slats that would creep out in super-slow/super-tight turns and throw the nose off. I'm not sure if DCS has all that in their models...
You could saw them moving out , but does'nt looked like it changed something . These wing slats helped a lot , that's why the 109 only used the flaps for landing/starting . They were hand cranked .
We had an old boy ex P47 pilot at our flying club many years ago. He had been given his choice of aircraft - when asked why he chose the P47, he said it had more armour plating around the pilot than any other type!
These WWII dog fights are just glorious. I love when you're down on the ground fighting. It reminds me of the difference between watching NASCAR vs Formula One racing.
People in the comments are so focused on fights being fair because they fanboy over certain countries or planes and when they see their plane get whacked they take it personally so they have to defend the loss by saying their favorite plane was disadvantaged in this "test" and its still the best plane. And therefore their choice of prefering it is valid
Please please please more hurricane. That was the most enjoyable video in months. Also, there's a nasty tank buster version of the hurricane with 40mm cannon - that would also be extremely, extremely cool
It looks like Shotgun is putting in a notch of flaps at times. I wonder what his thought process is there. I feel like it might help in the 1-circle sometimes but it seemed like he was in a 2-circle fight when I noticed it. Not sure I would have thought of that.
Whether its in WW2 warbirds or modern jets, Shotgun is an absolute beast as an opponent and I hope we continue to have more of him on here! Guns-only dogfights are by far the most interesting content so thank you GS for these recent WW2 fight videos, and also the amazing fast pointy jets gunfights you have done in recent years.
Mig-21 vs F-14 It would be like “what if the F-14 was put into service a little faster” (Just remembered there was some videos GS where he did do that)
I think you should do more of these, it's fun to watch you and the guys push their planes and skills to the limit to win the dogfight. I agree, fights aren't fair ever. The whole point of every nation is to build the best plane.
In my humble view, it’s the fact that most fights are unfair that make the similar fighter battles so legendary It’s why people love the X Wing and TIE Fighter battles: imagine one just came in and steamrolled the other? They’d be shite but the X Wimg and TIE Fighter battles are the ME-109 v Spitfires of the movie world and it’s what makes those battles such good viewing on TV years after the events
My brother was a Viper pilot and said they had absolutely no interest in making fights fair. He basically wanted fights to be as close to clubbing baby seals as he could get.
This was a fight more often than not. This is also why the p51 became the premier fighter of WW2. Army had the mustang and the navy/marines had the Corsair. I'd love to see you and shotgun go toe to toe in the mustang vs Corsair. That'd be interesting
I love the Thunderbolt. It looks like a cigar and, hell, it fights like one. A hot smokin' beast! Definitely an airplane optimised for high altitude fighting and boomin' and zoomin', not turnin' and burnin'.
The "unfair" fights are the more interesting in my opinion. As you say, when you are able to squeeze all out of your aircraft and maybe have some luck too, you also can win an "unfair" fight.
Yeah, you don't turn fight in a Jug. You boom-n-zoom, and never let your dive go below your enemy. Dive in, set up your shot, hit or miss you dive away and extend then set up another pass. At least that is what always worked for me using planes like the Jug and Lightning in Aces High 2.
100% this, boom, zoom, extend repeat. The weight works for you using this tactic because you're normally extending away at a speed the target can't match.
Absolutely love the WW2 series...would love seeing south pacific battles ..when considering all the carriers involved in beyond visual battles it seems rich with scenarios...
The P-47D was built around it's massive Pratt & Whitney R2800 2000hp engine wedded to a huge 13' 4 bladed Curtiss "paddle" prop. Remember that the P-47D also had WEP an overboost function that dumped a water methanol mix into the motor to help the overboosted engine. I believe in WEP the R2800 was capable of almost 2300hp
The American ace Zemki used the 47 and had tricks he used to fight 109s. He used the 47s outstanding roll to make it appear he was actually out turning 109s. F 4 pilots fighting Mig 21s used the same trick.
fairness? No, of course not. Only question is whether or not we dealing with 1941-42, 43 or 44 or 45 era aircraft. Nevertheless the P47s of the 56 Fighter Group in particular did great damage to the 109s, 190s, and 110s of the Luftwaffe. While the P51s coming into their own in late 44 and 45 did their share, it was the P47s that took it on the chin and gave back even greater than they took in the early years.
The "It's not fair" excuse in a realistic Combat Simulator is like the one kid who sucks at the game calling the other team hackers. Considering how the P-51 and P-47 both had to face off against Me-262's more than once, of course it wasn't a fair fight, but it happened.
I have a video idea. Do a fighter generations dogfight, USA vs Russia. Pick a random fighter, starting with WWII props, and go up one generation every round until you reach 5th gen
From what I understand, the P-47 was successful because of an incredibly powerful engine and a very robust airframe, despite its less than competitive maneuverability.

F-5 vs. Viggen
Can perhaps we get an A-4 vs ww2 plane fight? haven't seen the A-4 in a while.
Can you do a P-38 vs Mosquito dogfight, please!?
I love the 47 bubble top, looks like a jalapeno!
Two words for the Jug: Raw Power. The jug doesn't fly, it just tells the air to get out of its way.
Like the F4 of its day! Except it has some aerodynamics.
"Where is he getting all this energy?"
My brother, that plane isn't big for aesthetics. It got a huge PW-2800 and a giant(super?) turbo charger in it. It's held back by the prop more than anything.
I was going to reply with "power". 😄
Also was un matched in the dive no plane could follow it in the dive without meeting the ground
The R-2800, as installed in the P-47 was both turbo and mechanically supercharged, with the turbo supercharger in the aft fuselage feeding a mechanically driven centrifugal supercharger mounted to the back of the engine.
In late 44 the "paddle prop" solved many of the Jugs issues. There is a reason the Jug shot down more planes than the 51.
People forget that, while sure, it is heavy, it isn't as heavy as it looks. Due to its sophisticated turbocharger system, It's half air ducts. IT'S NOT FAT, IT'S LUNG VOLUME!!!

3:21 - The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp 2600-horsepower engine is where he's getting that energy from. LOL
Shotgun is smooth. Kudos to you for having him.
P-38 vs everything

And Shotgun has EXCELLENT throttle management in that plane.

I do love watching the 109 fight.
The bf-109 looks astonishing in those colours
Jagdgeschwader JG squadron leaders usually painted the noses this way. It made them easier to identify.
The Bolt will outperform most WW2 fighters above 15k feet both turning and speed. With that big turbo charger it was meant as a high altitude fighter.
Correct.
not the bf109 especially at higher altitudes the 109 can turn so much sharper
Most don't understand how big it was..the airframe was constructed around what is essentially a "small" locomotive turbo and it's piping. it had to be located behind the pilot because it was too big to fit up front

@@TheSuperhomosapien yes, to escort the Heavy Bombers that flew +15,000 feet.
Man the Bf 109 just looks bad ass evil somehow.
The P 47 had nearly 4k aerial victories in WW2, you can't do that with a plane incapable of moving. The pilots loved it.
It’s not about aerial victories it’s about win to loss ratio. Those numbers are probably pretty skewed if you think about. A plane that is mass produced or made in large numbers will always have a high winning rate.
The 109 was a better fighter. 15k + kills

"I don't know where he's getting this energy from" Saying this just after shotty nosed dived from the heavens
The P-47 has fairly decent energy retention, so as long as he's not being hamfisted with the stick he should be able to hold on to his airspeed.
These WWII dog fights are just glorious. I love when you're down on the ground fighting. It reminds me of the difference between watching NASCAR vs Formula One racing.

It is just a videogame
WW2 dogfighting is way more fun to watch than the jet stuff 😁
shotgun is such a pro
That was a well greased hog... nice dogfights.
That whistling sound on the 109 engine is so sexy.
Id like to see 109 vs Dora and 51 vs Spit.

The original tank buster flying nearly ground level. The two cannons caused the Hurricane to nose dive... Brave pilots.
I love your 109 videos man !! they are so good !
Like to see you take the "BF" against a Corsair.
I think I've watched all the A10 mission videos. Can you make some more?
soooooooon.
The energy is coming from Red Bull..."It Gives You Wiings"!!!
That P47 doing it's best 5th gen impersonation out there, damn!
It’s like a WWII ballet - great cinematography - and so much more interesting with both sides players
I was scrounging for some p-47. You arrived right on time
Try fighting a FW-190A with a Spitfire V and then a IX.
That ending felt very personal. Haha great job to you and Shotgun!
To quote Desert Brutality: "We considered Fair, and decided against it."
Id like the see this dogfight but above 20,000ft. Up there and higher the P-47 could out turn a FW-190.
Yes! The P47 was designed to fight in the cons. I’ve even seen sources that say the P47 even outperforms the p51 up there.
