I'm noy stuck abroad, I'm just making a rational instead of emotional decision. It's been over 37 years, got married here, got my education here and have 4 beautiful children here, where's home? HOME IS WHERE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE.

You couldn't have said it better Summer! Facts overload! My families built houses in Nigeria daydreaming that someday they'd retire back to Nigeria, but unfortunately, all of this mansions are empty in portharcourt. My uncle and aunts have said for the past 10yrs now they're moving back to Nigeria, but they're still here ( USA). My aunt was kidnapped, when she visited Nigeria, bcus of that, my parents have literally banned me from visiting, they rather visit the US than let any of us go back to Nigeria......it's quit unfortunate everything you said is our reality

I found wisdom and method to build what you would describe as a mansion in Nigeria. Could not afford to buy similar property abroad as would cost millions of dollars or Sterling or Euro. Not that I am rich but opportunity met planning and execution. I have my home abroad also but still paying mortgage and taxes. So in addition to building I bought lands for proposed Agricultural projects. All these investments are careful planning should I decide to return on retirement. If Nigerians don’t have a plan don’t expect to pack your bags and go to Nigeria and live like a King or Queen. You can finance your children abroad from good investments in Nigeria. So for me it’s medium to long term planning to find another way should things change. Even if I don’t return full time I have alternative. The fear about Nigeria is safety but God protects.

Home is where the heart is. In 2017 i visited Sierra Leone 🇸🇱, where I am from after 12 years, it didn’t feel like home and people kept telling me that I wasn’t really from there. so it didn’t feel like home, because people kept telling me I didn’t belong.

I came to Europe through study now I am working, I never feel am part of European society. I am still single. My plans are to have and train my children in Nigeria, after they turn 16 I bring them to study here. when I reach my retirement age I go back to Nigeria and settle down. They are so many peaceful cities in Nigeria more peaceful than Europe, you can as well settle there, Nigeria is not only Lagos. If you don’t miss home like people always say here, hope you don’t miss the food as well?
Most people that are stuck in Europe are those ones that have children in Europe or outside Nigeria. I use people mistake to correct my future mistake. Nigeria real estate is very cheap compared to Europe or America. If you want to live a better life in Nigeria you have to plan for it. I hate to hear dem say dem say. I always go to Nigeria every year never missed one year since my 6years in Europe.

Good job, accommodation and mobility awaits you at the end of your studies. Education was free ,good health system, transportation and water services were available. Even if you came abroad, you wanted to return quickly. Naira used to be stronger than dollars. I don't want to waste your time with stories or history. The solution isn't far fetched. Vote people of today, that has the solution to today's problem, vote out analogue brains, this is digital age. Vote Sowore. Vote AAC. That is a good restarting point.

Story of my life my sister. I have started to accept the reality now especially as America is home to my children than Nigeria. It’s heartbreaking but it’s the reality. I used to say that if by any chance I die here they should take my body home, but now when I think about the cost and the fact that my children wont be able to visit my grave site as often as they would want to, I am beginning to be open to the alternative. It is sad that we all had to leave home to seek better lives abroad, and our children and whatever they become are losses to Nigeria.

One other thing about going back to Naija is that the overall Chaos will suddenly feel uncivilised and you long for the more calm way of living. No more 2 hours of traffic each day to and from work in Lagos traffic. The colder weather in Europe can be more refreshing to the skin....less blemishings. Much less shouting in the street when shopping. It can be easier to sleep at night when you are not sweating. The city pollution from deisel fuel in Lagos gets into your clothes, your skin and your lungs. Also, less bribing to get things in Europe.

100% truth. Honestly I have always known I would never never return to Nigeria from the 1st day my mum took me from the UK to Nigeria in 1982. Once I came back in 1997 I knew I was home. Lol.

If you are planning to get married and start a familly, I would suggest you stay in Nigeria. Relocating and settling in a western country takes on average 8-10 years for those who are lucky.

Summer your analysis is correct. Good Job! I have a question for you though. Why do most Nigerians who have lived comfortably abroad all their adult life wish to be buried at home when they died? What is the correlation between a good life abroad and the transition to the Nigerian village to RIP?
In the final analysis home is still the best place to build and plan for the final eternal REST

You are on point my sister. The country I left 30 years ago, no longer exists. It's the sad truth. I still hope to retire in Africa, whether it's Nideria it's another question? Thanks for shading light on this.

  • @nemochki
    @nemochki 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm not Nigerian but what you've said is true of most Africans stuck abroad. Particularly @9:52 and @10:31, the longer you stay, the more you become detached from people home. They move on and build new social connections and families whilst you also personally develop your own. You tend to have less in common and it becomes hard to fit in. And coming back home has the challenge of getting one established to a comfortable position that you are now accustomed to. And the environment in most cases is not as conducive to flourish in as one has gotten used to. Nonetheless, it is possible to relocate with time but not just waking up one day and say this month I will be relocating. Lol, welcome back home.

    Hi
    Summer
Thanks for shading light on this . It's not true for everybody. You don't move back home when you're in your 60s. For my family, we invested everything we made back home. We travel home quite often with the kids. They are going home for middle and part of high school. I know a family that did the same for their kids, those kids are now adults living in Abuja with very good jobs. They encouraged their parents to go home.

Secondly Nigeria does not give a damm about me as it's citizen. A nation that has no citizens is not a nation. Thank you summer for this wonderful incite

The fact is that you just went to school in Nigeria and then you immigrated. So out foreign you commenced living your life for yourself, through studying and working to study. Then you eventually got a house, established a family and are living your own life. So you commenced living your life really after you immigrated. Of course from there on that iss where you made YOUR home. In Nigeria you were part of your parents home, now in a different part of the world you are living your life in your own self chosen place of homestead where your life is now continuing. Well done !!!

And still after my dad has passed away and i am left from that church 13 yrs ago and gotten BA in that bigger city i do not see my future in that small city where i grow up. I hate small places. And i have too much bad school bullying memories from there too. So no way i go back.

There are many Irish people permanently living in America and some Italians permanently living in France. It’s not an African thing. I also know of some white people who have remained in Nigeria and died in Nigeria. Look up Shielah Solarin
She was a white woman who lived and died in ogun state.

I feel stuck too but I have a plan. I miss Nigeria despite its downsides. Living abroad has downsides too. If you have a debt free home great but few do. Ever wondered why multi-millionaires and billionaires have homes across the world? Because they don’t want to feel or get stuck physically as well due to taxation reasons. Despite relative stability of things abroad but there is no guarantee that will continue for ever. Remember the Jews in Germany during. 2nd world war? They lost untold. So an alternative plan is actually wisdom. I can do a seminar if that were possible for us to share ideas.

You couldn't have said it better. Most of us here in U.S. we have houses back home even we built our retirement houses but we have come to realize that most of us will not got back and reside in Nigeria again due to most of the reasons you made mention of. For me because of basic infrastructures. Most of the women here said they will stay with their children why most of the men have plans to retire and go stay back home and be coming to visit our families here in US and also for medical check up. When my wife, my children and l visit Nigeria when we are tired of Nigeria and we are counting days to come back home. They will be asking us back in Nigeria why are we referring to America as our home instead of Nigeria. We tell them Nigeria is no longer our home.

There is never a place like home sister,, Yes is true that in terms of security , electricity, good roads, etc we are still learning, this is why these fews months to come are very decisive us as a Nation. Let's make the right choice for a better new Naija. The naija we can call home SWEET home! I understand you though , especially when under age kids are involved it's hard not to be stuck for some time. I missed good healthy food from the farm. I am sick and tired of all these OGM foods Europeans are feeding people with..

the issue with Nigerian roads isnt actually bad roads, though the roads are bad with average speed they are ok. The issue arises due to "one way" driving, reckless overspeeding and overall savage driving.
