    Mactype is just Freetype for Windows, and as such you can generally expect the fix to also work on Linux (and it'll likely apply to mostly everything).

    I'dd add that Grayscale font smoothing with Better Cleartype Tuner also seems to be font dependent. Overall it just seems completely broken as some fonts can become totally without subpixel smoothing and others work fine. Some texts will have single letters like lowercase L that may become extra thick, resulting in text that looks like a ransom letter made of random newspaper letter clippings.
    Microsoft absolutely should fix at least grayscale font smoothing as on MacOS for example LG's WRGB pixel structure seems to be a non-issue. Ideally they would simply add support for more pixel structures.
    I'd be interested to see you make a part 2 testing the Alienware QD-OLED on a Mac and see what results you get there.

    You should try these in Elite Dangerous. There is a lot of text in menus, messages and the UI and HUD. The extremely high contrast between deep blacks and bright text, couples with poor AA, makes for difficult reading at times, especially in VR. Sometimes the aliasing is so bad, it looks like staircases everywhere. Good work as always, Tim. o7

    I've had this monitor about a week now. Couple of things. Pixel shift is noticeable. Panel refresh and pixel refresh warning pop up way more often than I thought they would and at times comes up every single time I turn on the monitor. You can not update the firmware and in order to get the new firmware you need to send your monitor to Dell and they send you a refurbished unit with the new firmware compared to AW3423DWF where you can update it. The fear if burn in given the 1300 dollar price tag AND this monitors screen is weak to micro scratches and often ships with micro scratches on the screen out of the box due to no prote time layer other than bubble foam sheet from the factory. A quick reddit search will show you. Because of these things I'm thinking of returning the monitor and going with another option or waiting to see what MSI and Samsung offer in the oled market. Oled HDR and picture quality is so hard to beat and going with a IPS LCD option feels like going backwards.

    • @RyhtymFiend
      @RyhtymFiend ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100 bucks says samsung and MSI have the exact same issues, seeing as they are using the same panel.
      For me, it's the raised blacks in bright room conditions, making me want to return my aw3423dwf. It's the best monitor I've feasted my eyes on, but there are a few glaring issues that I feel will be addressed eventually. Did your monitor have any visible micro scratches. Mine didn't.

    This is really interesting video. I have already shared it with others. For now my next monitor will be an LCD with full array local dimming at 4K for the text clarity issue. While I agree that Microsoft needs to fix this issue I would not expect that fix to be fast. Designing this into the OS in a reliable way that works will take some fairly serious engineering effort and these panels are quite new. It will likely need an overhaul of how rendering is done not just text rendering in order to catch all the other things like window borders.

    • @Navhkrin
      @Navhkrin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they just fix text that is good enough. But lets assume they are going to fix it for everything, they dont need to 'overhaul' how rendering is done, they just need to use a more intelligent rasterization step in the rendering pipeline that accounts for subpixel sample locations. And if they make such a fix display manufacturers need only to enter relative subpixel locations to pixel center and it should out of box support various subpixel layouts.
      Main problem is that all the software is designed to think with 'pixels' and not with 'subpixels'. Accounting for sub-pixels and designing rasterization around that would bring considerably clarity improvements comparable to upgrading to higher res.

      This would require disassembly of the monitor and voiding the warranty. God knows how easy or hard Alienware made servicing.
      The whole integrated G-Sync module is just stupid and unnecessary on an OLED panel. The module that requires active cooling offers variable overdrive - a feature most scalers mostly lack. But since OLED does not require overdrive the variable overdrive advantage of the module is negated. Alienware could have made the monitor 200 buck cheaper, without the fan and with HDMI 2.1 ports had they NOT used the G-Sync module.

    One would think they'd have worked different sub pixel layouts into the OS by now, given there are Windows tablets and 2-in-1s that can rotate around freely, and these super high density screens with weird sub pixel layouts have been around on phones for 10+ years.
    I used to hate the diamond sub pixel layout a lot of phones use now, but over time realized it allows sub pixel rendering in any direction, not just horizontal as with RGB stripe.

    Imperfect Text clarity really doesnt bother me much on a gaming monior; Motion, connected feel, and vibrancy along with decent HDR and deep blacks and clear images in light gradiants and light rays (my personal experience seeing flickering lines all over volume light and certain gradiants while using x35) are. Both the x35 and oled alienware have flickering in different forms. But overall id say the alienware image is less disturbed for my eyes and more predictable and less destractive so a little easier to cope with. Its a shame about the lack of polarizer on the alienware; Im ordering blackout curtains and painting my walls black. My unit has another issue where it black flashes every 15mins. Trying a replacement soon to see if its just my unit. Im loving the new screen though and the lack of black smeering is really impressing me. Its been an upgrade and not a sidegrade for me from long time x35 user.

    This is the biggest reason (besides the odd anti-glare coating) that I never bought a AW3423DW personally. If it was 4K, it might’ve been worth it due to a higher pixel density to help mitigate the issue, but I work a ton in the Adobe Suite and in other productivity apps such as Maya, and the last thing I need is color fringing and color shifting because of my monitor. I’m really hoping that this tech gets put into a 4K panel that’s a reasonable size (a 42 inch C2 is also a no-go due to its shear size) and that the non-standard subpixel layout gets corrected for in Windows. Hopefully within the next few months, more monitors with OLED and QD-OLED get revealed, because having the technology mature will benefit everyone.
    Also, speaking of which, I’d love to see you guys cover the professional side of monitors, like Pro-Art style displays! You’ve helped out a ton with clearing up the confusion of displays for the gaming side of things, however I’d also like to see suggestions for people like filmmakers, animators, or game devs, who may or may not need high refresh rate displays, but absolutely need as much color accuracy as possible for different price points. I know that you primarily use Windows, but I was wondering how is the subpixel rendering on Linux? I could easily see myself primarily switching to Ubuntu in near future (maybe with a windows dual boot) as majority of the games that I am interested in nowadays support it.

    • @RedundancyDept
      @RedundancyDept ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I don't have direct experience with Ubuntu, which defaults to the Gnome desktop environment. I can tell you that subpixel rendering is excellent in Fedora with the KDE desktop, arguably better than Windows--at least with regard to BGR monitors. I doubt the FOSS community has developed a fix for cutting edge, high-end OLED monitors, though.
      One of the things you'll learn about Linux, and particularly about stable release distros like Ubuntu, is that compatibility with brand new hardware can be a little spotty--though not all that bad if you're willing to tinker a bit. (And of course, installing NVIDIA drivers can require a little extra hoop jumping, but I'd say that complaint is overblown these days.) Otherwise, on most hardware, Linux can actually be markedly easier than Windows, basically effortless; the drivers are included in the kernel so you don't even have to identify, much less install them. The first time Linux fired up my printer without my having to touch a damn thing was a mind-blowing experience.
      So if you're looking to get started with Linux and you think you'll have cutting edge hardware on the regular, you might err away from distros with a slow release cycle (Debian/Ubuntu). I'd definitely stay away from the opposite extreme, rolling-release distros like Arch (and its derivatives, e.g. Manjaro). Fedora's a nice happy medium on that front--the updates are frequent, but not so frequent that you have to tinker constantly.
      On the other other hand, if you just want the easiest possible distro for a WIndows user to start with, then Linux Mint is by far the best option, IMO. This is a Debian/Ubuntu-based distro, so it is a stable (slow) release, which means you might have to tinker with drivers occasionally. For example, I had to manually install AMD drivers for my RX 6800 roughly 4 months after the card's release--but as long as you're not buying brand new hardware on the regular, you should be fine.
      I've rambled endlessly here and largely off-topic. I hope you do try Linux. Dual booting is a nice option. The main obstacle, to start, is simply getting past the paralysis-by-analysis that comes with all of the many many distribution options out there.

    • @Recolation
      @Recolation ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a matter of debate, but I agree with @RedundancyDept that the experience can very good, if not better, than Windows. I also think that, generally speaking, Linux handles greyscale text rendering far better than Windows does. As @kasakka has pointed out, it's quite inconsistent on Windows. On Linux it's very consistent, and, with hinting set to "slight", isn't too off from rgb subpixel rendering.
      Freetype is very customizable. So if you want quality subpixel-rendering that's compatible with QD-OLED subpixel layout, you can *probably* manage via a custom compiling with similar parameters for the subpixel layout that's offered in this video for Mactype. Freetype *is* what Mactype uses after all. However there is no direct interface - I think - to customize Freetype the way you can with Mactype on Windows. But, hey, at least Freetype works globally on Linux whereas on Windows it's a bit of a broken mess.
      The only area wherein font rendering is really lacking on Linux is gamma correction, so with subpixel rendering turned on, some fonts can look a little too dark on dark backgrounds.

      @javierflores09 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RedundancyDept that complain is definitely not overblown, and that bit of tinker requires hours of google search so uh, I would refrain from saying Linux can be effortless because it never is. Don't get me wrong I love Linux myself, I dualboot arch (of course had to mention this otherwise I wouldn't be an arch user) and windows on my main desktop and use it for almost anything but gaming and some other windows-specific tasks but for us who are used to deal with these kind of problems it does seem like a small issue now, but in a new user's perspective it is utter pain and I'd like to avoid people thinking it is a pretty experience

    • @RedundancyDept
      @RedundancyDept ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@javierflores09 I hear you, Javier--and usually I agree. It's frustrated me, at times, to see Linux advocates minimize the learning curve. There've been a number of relatively mundane things that tripped me up quite a bit, both because Linux makes certain things needlessly obscure or complicated (to my Windows-trained eye), and because Google is often very much less helpful with regard to diagnosing and fixing Linux issues. Windows spoils us to a large extent just due to its enormous user base complaining on the internet on our behalf, lol.
      So I hope RolandsSh won't take my comment as a "lol Linux is effortless." But specifically with regard to NVIDIA drivers, I've found the process to be extremely smooth and easy, both on Fedora and Linux Mint. When I say the complaint is overblown, I'm simply referring to the common refrain in internet comments that you should "just buy AMD" if you're using Linux. I get that NVIDIA's behavior shouldn't be rewarded, but I also don't think people who already have an NVIDIA GPU should let that dissuade them from trying Linux.
      And there are certain things that are just easier on Linux. Managing most drivers and pretty much all software updates are the big ones that leap to mind, but there are a number of little things too that may or may not apply to you, if you're using a different Desktop Environment. And the storage options--simply magnificent, though perhaps occasionally difficult or fiddly to configure.
      Gaming, likewise, I've found absolutely stunningly easy, but I don't game much, and I don't play games that have Anti-Cheat. For a lot of games Steam/Proton will handle everything for you now, though.
      But yes, absolutely, Linux isn't an adjustment for the faint of heart. You have to want to do it, and you have to be willing to spend extra time fiddling with things, much as you would have to fiddle if you were learning Windows for the first time.
      Dual booting is excellent in this regard. I have three systems ATM--one's running Fedora full-time, another's running Mint full-time, and my main "gaming" machine dual boots Fedora and Windows. I like having the option of using Windows; it's nice to have that security blanket, the knowledge that I could run a Windows-only app if i absolutely had to--but I really haven't needed it. If you have a working Windows license and sufficient disk space, there's no reason not to keep the option around, particularly if you're just starting out with Linux.
      EDIT: to clarify, when I said Linux can be "basically effortless" on "most hardware," in my first post, i was referring to drivers. Now that I re-read it I can see how you might interpret that as a general statement on Linux's ease of use. My fault.

    Even if you could somehow fix the text rendering across the entire OS, this problem still affects everything else as well. It's visible on icons, UI, all sharp lines like the edges of windows and so on. I use a LG C2 many hours each day for desktop work, including graphic design and illustration where i need good rendering for all those thin lines and sharp edges. While the WRGB subpixel layout is not quite as good as a standard RGB layout it's still very usable even for this type of display challenging work. I'm happy with the C2 overall, unlike my experience with QD-OLED. I don't consider QD-OLED fit for purpose as a monitor in it's current form.
    4K pixel density wont be enough to significantly reduce the subpixel rendering issues either. On some lines/edges at certain angles and colours i could still easily see problems from 6+ foot away (2 meters). Only something like 8K would be enough to _mostly_ eradicate these issues with a typical viewing distance and screen size, which is ridiculous. QD-OLEDs subpixel layout simply needs to be changed.
