Mate I can't believe the USA don't have these awesome trucks I'm in Australia and we have heaps of them there is nothing better than the sound of the Scania V8 with a full load.36 years ago one of the first semi trailer trucks I went in was a long nose v8 Scania and I have loved them ever since thanks to uncle wallywally for the memory RIP
A lot of it has more to do with politics than anything else and safety. The long nose trucks are safer for the driver than the cab overs. The inline 6 has become the standard engine for American trucks over V8s in the last 30 years or so.
@@Ratkill9000 6 cilinder is standard in europe to. V8-s are almost gone. Scania has it, the rest just 6 cilinders..even in larger 650+ hp engines. As for truck design it is mostly adapting to the rules and roads. Europe has low limits on length of semi+ trailers. So if you want max lenght trailer...truck has to be short. Tight roads and corners in most of Europe ate to blame for that. In USA you dont have that problem so no reason to make your life hard with cabovers. As for safety..modern cabovers are very safe in crashes. Main crash point is usually below the feet coz you seat so high.
Actually Europe has recently adopted the concept of High Capacity Transport (HCT) which includes the use of mega trucks ("Road Train") over 30 meters long and close to 80 tons of hauling capacity. And this is where Scania simply excels. If You want to do it like Sonny Pruitt used to do it, get yourself a Scania V8! 🇸🇪💪

As a 23 year employee in Scania Södertälje bulding your tranmissison and so much more before i left the company for new adventures . I have to say you have seen the light American has it’s load and proud but the economy and ease of use .. i think u get it . I admit the are way more complicated then your style . But you get it . 💯👍
Euro trucks are great. The regulations about size etc make them cab over appealing. There is a company in Netherlands that will make a long nose scania.

In 2012 I was in Italy for three weeks. The Sprinter style work vans were everywhere. Here we are today in the US and they’re everywhere. I’m working out of one, myself. Now don’t get me wrong, I was a truck driver for 10 years back in the 1990s and large cars with big hoods and huge chrome grills are just classic American trucks. I’ll never forget the days of running the K whopper 900s and the Pete 379s, but Scania builds on the more practical base. Not only practical, but more then enough pull and all the creature comforts. They build really nice trucks. I have a feeling that a day will come and you will see Scania running the American roads as common as the Sprinter vans. Don’t freak out…. It’s like taking off your work boots and putting on a pair of slippers. And I’m ol school saying this.
You do not necessarily need to pick the liftable axle completly up. There is a function, button next to the differential locker, that unloads some of that axles weight, transfering it to driving axle. I confirm that helps in the snow. Between that and the lockers, I have not yet needed the chains on the road.
Exactly! It would be so cool; to see Bruce really stuck with a SCANIA truck: And to see him experince how much moving weight to the drive axel -really helps -to get going again. To use the boogie lift button -with some more serious loads on: Will put unnessesary strain -on the drive axel airbellows. But at the same time: -Who doesn't love the classic 'Norge Booggie'.
@@Eugensson Not sure about the exact point of the question (sorry). If it's the number of axles: of course! If it's about being able to lift the axle: that's only about fuel consumption and saving tires. If of course the weight limit per axle is not exceeded. The function to unload some of the weight is used when the truck does not let me lift that axle. I do not know where that limit is set because it will prevent me lifting the axle even when legal limit is not exceeded. The function to unload some of the weight is only used to gain some traction when slightly stuck, never used for driving anyway...
What is it even called in english? I only know that in finnish it's called "telikevennin" I had to use it quite a bit this winter, i did snow removal and the snow dumps always had really bad traction since they're obviously covered in snow and ice.
Hi Bruce. I am a Norwegian who lived in Wisconsin for many years. Love your Scania videos!! Did you know that Scania has your shoe rack in the steps going up into the truck? Most truckers have a no shoes allowed inside the cab policy. :) Ask the Scania people to share that with you. Take care. Vidar. :)
Well, however. Shoes or something on the feet is a law in Sweden. Have been accidents where the trucker only used socks and that truckdriver took the hit for the accident just because of that. Some people saying: "You don't use shoes in a office." That's correct, but a truck is still a vehicle you drive. So according to law you can't drive a vehicle in socks, it is against the law. I am just picky now, I don't care if a truckdriver uses shoes or not to drive. I can't be without shoes tho. Because when I started to drive trucks, first time I used zero shoes I almost made an accident. And that have been sitting in my spinalcord ever since. I couldn't brake as I used to, was very very close to collide. Only on very very long trips I can be without shoes tho, but it is still unconfortable for me.
Wow look at that! At 13:15 you can see one of the covers to the subwoofer that is behind the back wall. That makes me so happy and proud! I was one of the electromechanical engineers in charge of the infotainment radio unit and loudspeakers. I fought hard for the survival of the subwoofer as it were the least prioritized item on the entire New Cab Generation project. I can probably write a whole book about the development of the Scania subwoofer during this time. The short version is that the subwoofer was first placed behind the driver, but as the least prioritized item, the volume required for good performance had to decrease several times when other components needed more space. The subwoofer eventually had worse performance than the door speakers and it was pointless to continue, so I "killed it" and tried to find 20 liter of empty space in a different location. Not very easy in a hyper modular truck with thousands of configurations, basically every inch is occupied and everything was also frozen because this was at the end of the release for serial production. I spent months looking at the master CAD-model and real prototype cabs to find any suitable space, but couldn't. Then one day I overheard one of the mechanics that said "-its strange that it is empty space up there" and what I didn't notice was that the sound isolation on the roof/back panel was modeled too thick in CAD compared to the real world. This also made it quite challenging to design the subwoofer because i couldn't use the CAD-environment. I had to hand carve the shape of the subwoofer from a rigid foam block to fit the empty space, compression of the isolation and the assembly motion of the top/back panel. When I finally had a new shape and a location of the subwoofer, the fixation and mounting was the next mountain to climb. Due to very strict ergonomic requirements of the factory workers, they must not lift more than 5kg and not above their shoulders. The subwoofer with dual drivers and amplifier is now ~8kg and is mounted in the roof/back corner, I am a normally tall male and in the cab I can stand and barely reach the roof with my fingers. The factory workers could be short females and they have to be able to mount the subwoofer as well. No lifting equipment could be used since it is a moving assembly line where the top/back panel is mounted and the subwoofer must be behind it. This together with no available fixation points in the cab structure, since its now in full serial production, I could only use 4 existing holes that was only used for the welding robots for alignment. But they are 1 meter apart on each side of the cab which is more than 2m wide. I only had 2 more kg to figure out brackets to reach those holes so two workers are allowed to lift it and strong enough to handle the crash loads (A box of tissues can kill you with the g-forces in a crash, so you really don't want a 10kg subwoofer in your head..). Finally, many iterations later, the 1 meter long brackets could now also be used as lifting handles for the workers to reach. I never saw the subwoofer in production, while it waited for approval I had to quit my consultant assignment because I almost burnt out. The radio unit I also was partly responsible of was THE most prioritized item of the truck and you just can't release a new generation, 15 years of development, of trucks with no radio in it and a gaping hole in the dashboard. The radio was a mess and involved hundreds of engineers. Emergency meetings took the focus of a normal working day, I could only work on my other items after people went home. At the evening you could see me running around the parking with a pink rigid foam subwoofer model, as tall as my self and trying to find suitable empty cabs to test-fit in. And now I finally see it in a real cab, for two seconds! How hard could it be to fit a jerrycan sized subwoofer in a giant truck? 🙂
That's very interesting and I appreciate your effort! In my opinion all trucks should come with a proper sound system because you spend a lot of your time in the cab and listening to music is just part of the journey. The sound quality sucks usually and I find myself not listening to music at all (which I usually love to do) because no amount of EQ can weigh up the poor quality of the speaker elements. Adding a bit extra money for better speakers is nothing in the total cost of a brand new truck so I don't understand why they cheap out on the speakers, literally 100€ would make a world of difference. Some of the cheapest aftermarket speakers crush stock speakers. I hope to see that truck brands step up and partner up with Harman/Olufsen/Bowers or something and give truckers a better sound experience, especially for those who are not allowed to mod their companies trucks etc.
Scania was upping their game with this generation of trucks, they wanted to be in the realm of premium cars like Audi, Volvo and BMW. Not only look and feel but also with the sound system. The sound system is from 3 different suppliers but they are all well known top tier brands, one is one of the three brands you mentioned. The tuning of the sound system is a nightmare in a Scania/european truck. The A-pillars are asymmetrical to maximize visibility from the driver seat, so the tweeter that sit on the furthest A-pillar is directed into the curved windshield, and the sound is reflected of the windshield and creating an phase changed echo. The big engine tunnel also makes the sound bounce around the cab, creating sound cancellation zones. This was what ultimately killed the initial subwoofer because it didn't matter how good the subwoofer was, if placed on the same side as the driver, the long subwoofer sound waves bounced around and created a dead zone at the drivers head. Also that the Scania have different engine tunnel heights (from flat floor to almost arm rest height), roof heights, cab lengths, left/right steering configurations, upper bed or storage etc. Same speaker positions with two different performance levels and 2-, 4-, 5- and 5.1 speaker configurations have to work and sound good in all cab configurations. That is also why the subwoofer have two speaker drivers, it will sound the same in left/right steering configuration, it is the speaker driver furthest away that does the job. The initial subwoofer behind the driver seat was always on the left side so it could sound good for right side steering but the highest sale volumes are with left side steering. We had the HiFi tuning gurus from all three suppliers but it was our own sound engineer that found a way to compensate the echoes. The other gurus were very impressed by the final tuning. So while Scania does not brag about sound system by X, it is approved by not only one top tier brand but 3. Therefor I'm not very impressed by third party modifications of the sound system. Sound is a matter of opinion so it is not wrong, but to assume you can do better because it is a heavy duty truck is no longer the case. Just like in a premium car with a sound system by X, Scanias high end sound system is hard to beat. 🙂
@@youresushi Very nice info! I'm glad you guys are putting in the work. Are there multiple speaker options to choose from when ordering a new Scania? And do they offer a subwoofer nowadays? My bad for generalizing too much but the old (best) gen Scania at least had some really bad and cheap audio. I've driven a 2019 Scania and the bass performance is quite impressive for 6'5 inch speakers without distortion but what killed it for me was the tweeters which we're quite metallic sounding and peaky/sharp, couldn't really get it right with built in EQ. But again, maybe this was a worse audio setup from what they offer now? Like you said it's very hard to get the audio correct when there are so many different interior layouts, I know how hard it is just getting it right at home and therefor prefer headphones for simplicity and ultimate sound experience without any fuss 😅
@@EnormousRatty I don't know how Scania is packaging the options but there are two performance levels of door speakers and tweeters. Center and Subwoofer is only one variant. The tweeter with a metal mesh is the better one, the standard one is plastic. The door speaker you need to look with a flashlight behind the plastic cover, if there is a pointy cone in the middle of the speaker, that is the better one, standard one is just slightly rounded in the middle. But if you have the better tweeter you definitely have the better door speaker as well and vice versa. At 13:04 in the video you can see the tweeter with the metal mesh, so that truck seem to be equipped with the highest option.
Most review videos I've ever watched about scania is always talking the features performance, but you tilt up the cab and talking or comparing about the engine, that's what makes me love your videos bruce 😂👏
I never driven a semi until last week and it was older MAN, 440 hp, with an empty trailer, i drove around the parking lot and parked it, i can say these things drive like cars, its so easy and responsive on the controls. I didnt expect that from a semi. Very pleasant to drive.

23:40 Lifting the boggi axle when fully loaded is called the Nordic Lift. You get too much weight on the drive axle, but it's used in heavy/slippery snow conditions to get more traction in low speeds.

I've been in Volvo Daf Renault and Mercedes. Scania was by far the best. Excellent ergonomics and a super drivable engine with a lot of low end grunt. You just want the engine to be there for you. It pulled well from 800 rpm .
@@thomasdragosr.841 Probably lots of vested interests in the USA now lobbying the powers that be in Washington to write up some sort of Chicken Tax or Metric vs. Standard, SAE vs. ISO or OSHA or NTSB or DOT or something law to see these Euro trucks stonewalled for the foreseeable future.
It probably won’t do very well tbh. American truckers are used to a lot of space in the sleeper. Maybe they may sell to truckers that drive in the city a lot tho.
@@DontUputThatEvilOnMe All European trucks ae cab overs because of the dimension restrictions in Europe. The is a maxium lenght for a truck and when you have a nose in front of your truck you loose cargo space. To maximise cargo space the trucks are compact cab overs.

We had the privilege of supplying and fitting roof mounted air conditioners to Scania trucks during the late 1970s here in Australia. Magnificent trucks, and powerful. We did our work for the assembly plant in Broadmeadows. So nice to drive. Scania's by comparison made Mercedes trucks look basic. Most companies lean toward Kenworth in Australia because of their excellent resale value, but it is without doubt that a driver would hang onto his V8 Scania as long as possible before being forced to switch brands.

Hi bruce i have the 770s v8 but i have the highest speck with the full v8 pakage . I have had it for nearly a yead now and i can honestly say its my pride an joy i have had a few scania trucks over the years but when this new model came out i went to scania dealership and i had signed contract before i left its not cheap truck but in my opinion its what i wanted very pleased with its performance and absolutely no regret buying it . Plus scania dealership ship has been very supportive and ì think scania and volvo are 2 of the best on the market
I'm not a truck driver but the Scania trucks caught my eye after moving to the EU. Such a refined look. The auto braking / retard is a really cool feature - like brake pedal activated cruise control. I wish all vehicles had this.

3:47 that isn’t the heater you pointing at that is the stationary AC compressor and condenser for when you are parked. The stationary heater is also a option and is a coolant heater burning diesel that heats up the engine coolant and utilizes the same radiator for heating the cab as if you where driving the truck.
The electronics are amazing….. At my job we get to drive a different truck every time…. When I enter my driver’s card in the Tacho the radio switches to MY pre-selected stations!!
I dread visiting sweden because i'm not familiar which stop is safe to take a nap on. Some older guys even ratchet strap the doors together. Used to be very safe country. Still lovely when far from bigger cities.

I've been a trucker for over 50 years. I'm retired now, but I would love to have driven one of these. I remember the old 290 Cummins now a 770 horse. Wow
It is funny, Bruce hit a gold mine and most of the new viewers are probably European and not really interested in trucks. These trucks are everywhere where I live and I have no interest in truck content really. But it took an American with fresh eyes on European trucks to make me interested :) I learn about something I until recently had no interest in.
Wait a bit longer for Bruce to announce that he is going to become the official importer of Scania trucks to the USA. Because I am like 99% sure that is the big stuff that is coming that he was talking about in his previous video.
@@yndsu if they do that they have to model certify the truck for the us market, and that is pretty expensive. There is also som adaption that need to take place to make it not only legal but also a reasonable truck. One issue is that european trucks both are heavier and have fewer tires. That dont work in the USA due to rules for tire pressure
I saw loads of old cabovers with an electric pump plumbed into the normal manual system when I used to go to work with my dad on holidays (30 yrs ago and they were older trucks at the time). Some had a valve, some replaced the hand-pump with a combo unit. I'm sure you could mod a power steering pump into the plumbing and save yourself loads of pumping every time you need the cab up.
Hi Bruce , I did international work in Europe for 50 years, I was a Scania driver from 1974 with my first being the V8 140..At the time it was around 300 hp at least a third more powerful than anything else on the road with the exception of the F89 Volvo…I have never see a better all round truck in all those years, I’ve driven other makes including US trucks but none ever come close to Scania with Volvo a close second…My Last Scania was a V8 S650 an absolute mountain stormer , I did have an S770 on demonstration for a few days and I really didn’t notice much difference in my own and the S770… Scania do a bonneted version like US trucks and also a longline sleeper cab , they could easily match the US Volvo cab specs , they will always be higher than a US truck but even the T range will have far superior all around visibility than any US truck…The disadvantages are Scanias are heavier than American trucks , a lot of US owner operators still want these old fashioned monstrosities and will take a lot of convincing…The other problem I see is this , do Scania even want to be in the US market?…They are at maximum output and with a quality mark like this they don’t need to look for more business 🤷🏻♂️, if they do however as soon as drivers see and drive these amazing trucks there’s no going back to the past they will demand them…I do believe that Scania may just see an option with Bruce 🤔🤔🤔, he’s a guy that gets stuck in ,is enthusiastic and seems hooked on Scanias so who better to promote this fabulous truck range…
Great response and I totally agree with you. Albeit I've kinda always had more of a soft spot for Volvo over Scania especially with iShift. However it's only marginal. In my view and I'm sure you'll agree, the Swedes have all been head and shoulders above their competition.

They were here in the 80s . They left because of the 3rd party tradition. Wich means they don't like putting stuff on that truck that is not made by them . Is a shame if you ask me because they are far superior then what we have here in the US.
To be honest there are so many truck drivers here that would turn their nose up at any Euro truck because they are too “car like” on the inside, automatics, and not stuck in the 70s with a long nose. There are so many that put down our Volvos as plastic trucks and bad mouth the people that drive them and those same people are crying like babies because their precious Peterbilt got rid of a 2 piece windscreen and made the cab bigger. I adore Scania and think they are amazing, but so much negativity to anything modern in the US trucking culture.

Good evening Bruce I'm from Brazil and I've been a professional driver for a while now, I've worked with Ford Mercedes goods and Scania trucks, I currently work with an Iveco truck. In my humble opinion Among all these trucks the best one I like is the Iveco. The engine brake is better and safer, and there isn't a lot of plastic that ends up bothering you.
We are to load and unload containers on wheels (upto 54 in one trailer), adjusting the airsuspension to get the right inclination of the trailer is a BIG help!!!
Superb trucks! I have a 1972 80 Super, the cab is somewhat crusty but the chassis and mechanics are top notch! The engine starts with just one push of the starter button.

Tons of drive train options to be had on these. AWD are 4X4 or 6X6 axle configs. Then a bunch of tandem config options, even the 10X4*6 (twin front steering + one rear)

Those recessing stairs is also an invention by Scania. You find it in those 4-series that you have back home. And the stairs are wide compared to competition.
All trailer has air-bag suspension. However, not all trailers are fitted with remote ride-level control. Mostly because we change the trailer very often. So different system for that. But eventually, they will begin to work together on that because we all want it to work on all trailers. We don't lift the 3rd axle entirely during wheel slippage. There is on all the truck and 3-axled buses a push button that will reduce the air-bag pressure on the 3rd axle, thus shifting some of the load to the drive axle. And then when you come up in speed it will re-apply the normal pressure/load to the 3rd axle. And the mirrors, it is by law, can't legally remove them in EU. Though can replace them with cameras. You have Dutch second-hand Scania' that's why you have the bed above the windscreen. That's not standard and normal in the rest of the EU.

It's very rare to see a Scandinavian registered truck with a single rear axle. You see that on trucks from former East Europe. Like the Baltics and Poland. And if you look inside your truck there is a button that makes your truck lift the support axle(s) if it starts to spin. To give your truck some more traction. And if you can get your eyes of all beautiful trucks. Check out howe European busses are configurated. Look at the position of all axels. How much closer they are compared to US Busses. On a European bus you are allowed to ride the front and rear end over the curbs. Makes them way much easier to handle. Love to see how you opens up the interest for Swedish and European trucks. Would love to see you bring your brother on next trip and let him experience this top of the line trucks. Would love to hear his thoughts and input's
@@sic22l In Finland you get two tons more with dual wheels or steering singles on the tag axle. Steering is more expensive and dangerous on slippery turns with a short wheelbase. So duals it is except on long wheelbase trucks.

Something very intriguing about Scania V8 engines that left me speechless was when on a documentary I saw that engine at every low temperature starting up like if it was summer, at my 71 years of age I have never seen a V8 diesel engine, but the American diesel engines during winter time are harder to start.
My K100E had an air driven hydraulic pump for raising the cab! 1989! Great truck 444, 18 speed, 4.11s in the 46,000 rears. Drove it for 18 years, then went to a conventional….didnt like that at all!!
Some European trucks now have optional smart cameras and screens instead of mirrors where the camera tracks the rear of the trailer during blindside reversing, European trailer designs are also light years ahead of some of the oddball spread axle designs common in the US. Volvo offer a lift axle option on their double drive trucks in Europe by replacing the inter axle (power divider) differential with a clutch that disconnects drive to the third axle as the tyres lift up clear of the road so I just don't get why operators prefer Peterbilt.
Awsome videos Bruce. It’s fun to see you experience our vehicles from your point of view! I much more perfer one drive axle then tandem drive. Its easyer to turn in tight space, less fuel and less tirewear. If push the weight so you got 19 metric ton on one axle and keep lift axle lifted any tanden can try keep up slippery climbing. Only reason for tandem (exept its cool) is if you drive on gravel roads and such wich cant take 19 ton on one axle or if you got more then 2 axles rear so the combined weight is to high for one axle.

Perfect explanation of tag axel usage 👍 it should let you ride with it up if the total load is 40 ton maybe it was a little more weight on the truck axels to let it stay up while driving.
You should try getting into a winter driving course that everyone in scandinavia has to take regardless of what licence they are getting. Its really fun and you learn a lot.

A lot of it has more to do with politics than anything else and safety. The long nose trucks are safer for the driver than the cab overs. The inline 6 has become the standard engine for American trucks over V8s in the last 30 years or so.
@@Ratkill9000 6 cilinder is standard in europe to. V8-s are almost gone. Scania has it, the rest just 6 cilinders..even in larger 650+ hp engines. As for truck design it is mostly adapting to the rules and roads. Europe has low limits on length of semi+ trailers. So if you want max lenght trailer...truck has to be short. Tight roads and corners in most of Europe ate to blame for that. In USA you dont have that problem so no reason to make your life hard with cabovers. As for safety..modern cabovers are very safe in crashes. Main crash point is usually below the feet coz you seat so high.
Actually Europe has recently adopted the concept of High Capacity Transport (HCT) which includes the use of mega trucks ("Road Train") over 30 meters long and close to 80 tons of hauling capacity. And this is where Scania simply excels. If You want to do it like Sonny Pruitt used to do it, get yourself a Scania V8! 🇸🇪💪

Euro trucks are great. The regulations about size etc make them cab over appealing. There is a company in Netherlands that will make a long nose scania.

In 2012 I was in Italy for three weeks. The Sprinter style work vans were everywhere. Here we are today in the US and they’re everywhere. I’m working out of one, myself. Now don’t get me wrong, I was a truck driver for 10 years back in the 1990s and large cars with big hoods and huge chrome grills are just classic American trucks. I’ll never forget the days of running the K whopper 900s and the Pete 379s, but Scania builds on the more practical base. Not only practical, but more then enough pull and all the creature comforts. They build really nice trucks. I have a feeling that a day will come and you will see Scania running the American roads as common as the Sprinter vans. Don’t freak out…. It’s like taking off your work boots and putting on a pair of slippers. And I’m ol school saying this.
You do not necessarily need to pick the liftable axle completly up. There is a function, button next to the differential locker, that unloads some of that axles weight, transfering it to driving axle. I confirm that helps in the snow. Between that and the lockers, I have not yet needed the chains on the road.
Exactly! It would be so cool; to see Bruce really stuck with a SCANIA truck: And to see him experince how much moving weight to the drive axel -really helps -to get going again. To use the boogie lift button -with some more serious loads on: Will put unnessesary strain -on the drive axel airbellows. But at the same time: -Who doesn't love the classic 'Norge Booggie'.

If it's the number of axles: of course!
If it's about being able to lift the axle: that's only about fuel consumption and saving tires. If of course the weight limit per axle is not exceeded.
The function to unload some of the weight is used when the truck does not let me lift that axle. I do not know where that limit is set because it will prevent me lifting the axle even when legal limit is not exceeded.
The function to unload some of the weight is only used to gain some traction when slightly stuck, never used for driving anyway...

I had to use it quite a bit this winter, i did snow removal and the snow dumps always had really bad traction since they're obviously covered in snow and ice.

Well, however. Shoes or something on the feet is a law in Sweden. Have been accidents where the trucker only used socks and that truckdriver took the hit for the accident just because of that. Some people saying: "You don't use shoes in a office." That's correct, but a truck is still a vehicle you drive. So according to law you can't drive a vehicle in socks, it is against the law. I am just picky now, I don't care if a truckdriver uses shoes or not to drive. I can't be without shoes tho. Because when I started to drive trucks, first time I used zero shoes I almost made an accident. And that have been sitting in my spinalcord ever since. I couldn't brake as I used to, was very very close to collide. Only on very very long trips I can be without shoes tho, but it is still unconfortable for me.

Wow look at that! At 13:15 you can see one of the covers to the subwoofer that is behind the back wall. That makes me so happy and proud!
I was one of the electromechanical engineers in charge of the infotainment radio unit and loudspeakers.
I fought hard for the survival of the subwoofer as it were the least prioritized item on the entire New Cab Generation project.
I can probably write a whole book about the development of the Scania subwoofer during this time.
The short version is that the subwoofer was first placed behind the driver, but as the least prioritized item, the volume required for good performance had to decrease several times when other components needed more space. The subwoofer eventually had worse performance than the door speakers and it was pointless to continue, so I "killed it" and tried to find 20 liter of empty space in a different location. Not very easy in a hyper modular truck with thousands of configurations, basically every inch is occupied and everything was also frozen because this was at the end of the release for serial production. I spent months looking at the master CAD-model and real prototype cabs to find any suitable space, but couldn't.
Then one day I overheard one of the mechanics that said "-its strange that it is empty space up there" and what I didn't notice was that the sound isolation on the roof/back panel was modeled too thick in CAD compared to the real world. This also made it quite challenging to design the subwoofer because i couldn't use the CAD-environment. I had to hand carve the shape of the subwoofer from a rigid foam block to fit the empty space, compression of the isolation and the assembly motion of the top/back panel. When I finally had a new shape and a location of the subwoofer, the fixation and mounting was the next mountain to climb.
Due to very strict ergonomic requirements of the factory workers, they must not lift more than 5kg and not above their shoulders. The subwoofer with dual drivers and amplifier is now ~8kg and is mounted in the roof/back corner, I am a normally tall male and in the cab I can stand and barely reach the roof with my fingers. The factory workers could be short females and they have to be able to mount the subwoofer as well. No lifting equipment could be used since it is a moving assembly line where the top/back panel is mounted and the subwoofer must be behind it. This together with no available fixation points in the cab structure, since its now in full serial production, I could only use 4 existing holes that was only used for the welding robots for alignment. But they are 1 meter apart on each side of the cab which is more than 2m wide. I only had 2 more kg to figure out brackets to reach those holes so two workers are allowed to lift it and strong enough to handle the crash loads (A box of tissues can kill you with the g-forces in a crash, so you really don't want a 10kg subwoofer in your head..).
Finally, many iterations later, the 1 meter long brackets could now also be used as lifting handles for the workers to reach.
I never saw the subwoofer in production, while it waited for approval I had to quit my consultant assignment because I almost burnt out. The radio unit I also was partly responsible of was THE most prioritized item of the truck and you just can't release a new generation, 15 years of development, of trucks with no radio in it and a gaping hole in the dashboard. The radio was a mess and involved hundreds of engineers. Emergency meetings took the focus of a normal working day, I could only work on my other items after people went home. At the evening you could see me running around the parking with a pink rigid foam subwoofer model, as tall as my self and trying to find suitable empty cabs to test-fit in.
And now I finally see it in a real cab, for two seconds! How hard could it be to fit a jerrycan sized subwoofer in a giant truck? 🙂

That's very interesting and I appreciate your effort! In my opinion all trucks should come with a proper sound system because you spend a lot of your time in the cab and listening to music is just part of the journey. The sound quality sucks usually and I find myself not listening to music at all (which I usually love to do) because no amount of EQ can weigh up the poor quality of the speaker elements.
Adding a bit extra money for better speakers is nothing in the total cost of a brand new truck so I don't understand why they cheap out on the speakers, literally 100€ would make a world of difference. Some of the cheapest aftermarket speakers crush stock speakers.
I hope to see that truck brands step up and partner up with Harman/Olufsen/Bowers or something and give truckers a better sound experience, especially for those who are not allowed to mod their companies trucks etc.
Scania was upping their game with this generation of trucks, they wanted to be in the realm of premium cars like Audi, Volvo and BMW. Not only look and feel but also with the sound system. The sound system is from 3 different suppliers but they are all well known top tier brands, one is one of the three brands you mentioned.
The tuning of the sound system is a nightmare in a Scania/european truck. The A-pillars are asymmetrical to maximize visibility from the driver seat, so the tweeter that sit on the furthest A-pillar is directed into the curved windshield, and the sound is reflected of the windshield and creating an phase changed echo. The big engine tunnel also makes the sound bounce around the cab, creating sound cancellation zones. This was what ultimately killed the initial subwoofer because it didn't matter how good the subwoofer was, if placed on the same side as the driver, the long subwoofer sound waves bounced around and created a dead zone at the drivers head.
Also that the Scania have different engine tunnel heights (from flat floor to almost arm rest height), roof heights, cab lengths, left/right steering configurations, upper bed or storage etc.
Same speaker positions with two different performance levels and 2-, 4-, 5- and 5.1 speaker configurations have to work and sound good in all cab configurations. That is also why the subwoofer have two speaker drivers, it will sound the same in left/right steering configuration, it is the speaker driver furthest away that does the job. The initial subwoofer behind the driver seat was always on the left side so it could sound good for right side steering but the highest sale volumes are with left side steering.
We had the HiFi tuning gurus from all three suppliers but it was our own sound engineer that found a way to compensate the echoes. The other gurus were very impressed by the final tuning. So while Scania does not brag about sound system by X, it is approved by not only one top tier brand but 3.
Therefor I'm not very impressed by third party modifications of the sound system. Sound is a matter of opinion so it is not wrong, but to assume you can do better because it is a heavy duty truck is no longer the case.
Just like in a premium car with a sound system by X, Scanias high end sound system is hard to beat. 🙂

I've driven a 2019 Scania and the bass performance is quite impressive for 6'5 inch speakers without distortion but what killed it for me was the tweeters which we're quite metallic sounding and peaky/sharp, couldn't really get it right with built in EQ. But again, maybe this was a worse audio setup from what they offer now?
Like you said it's very hard to get the audio correct when there are so many different interior layouts, I know how hard it is just getting it right at home and therefor prefer headphones for simplicity and ultimate sound experience without any fuss 😅
@@EnormousRatty I don't know how Scania is packaging the options but there are two performance levels of door speakers and tweeters. Center and Subwoofer is only one variant.
The tweeter with a metal mesh is the better one, the standard one is plastic.
The door speaker you need to look with a flashlight behind the plastic cover, if there is a pointy cone in the middle of the speaker, that is the better one, standard one is just slightly rounded in the middle.
But if you have the better tweeter you definitely have the better door speaker as well and vice versa.
At 13:04 in the video you can see the tweeter with the metal mesh, so that truck seem to be equipped with the highest option.
Most review videos I've ever watched about scania is always talking the features performance, but you tilt up the cab and talking or comparing about the engine, that's what makes me love your videos bruce 😂👏
I never driven a semi until last week and it was older MAN, 440 hp, with an empty trailer, i drove around the parking lot and parked it, i can say these things drive like cars, its so easy and responsive on the controls. I didnt expect that from a semi. Very pleasant to drive.

23:40 Lifting the boggi axle when fully loaded is called the Nordic Lift. You get too much weight on the drive axle, but it's used in heavy/slippery snow conditions to get more traction in low speeds.

I've been in Volvo Daf Renault and Mercedes. Scania was by far the best. Excellent ergonomics and a super drivable engine with a lot of low end grunt. You just want the engine to be there for you. It pulled well from 800 rpm .

@@DontUputThatEvilOnMe All European trucks ae cab overs because of the dimension restrictions in Europe. The is a maxium lenght for a truck and when you have a nose in front of your truck you loose cargo space. To maximise cargo space the trucks are compact cab overs.

We had the privilege of supplying and fitting roof mounted air conditioners to Scania trucks during the late 1970s here in Australia. Magnificent trucks, and powerful. We did our work for the assembly plant in Broadmeadows. So nice to drive. Scania's by comparison made Mercedes trucks look basic. Most companies lean toward Kenworth in Australia because of their excellent resale value, but it is without doubt that a driver would hang onto his V8 Scania as long as possible before being forced to switch brands.

Hi bruce i have the 770s v8 but i have the highest speck with the full v8 pakage . I have had it for nearly a yead now and i can honestly say its my pride an joy i have had a few scania trucks over the years but when this new model came out i went to scania dealership and i had signed contract before i left its not cheap truck but in my opinion its what i wanted very pleased with its performance and absolutely no regret buying it . Plus scania dealership ship has been very supportive and ì think scania and volvo are 2 of the best on the market

The auto braking / retard is a really cool feature - like brake pedal activated cruise control. I wish all vehicles had this.

3:47 that isn’t the heater you pointing at that is the stationary AC compressor and condenser for when you are parked. The stationary heater is also a option and is a coolant heater burning diesel that heats up the engine coolant and utilizes the same radiator for heating the cab as if you where driving the truck.

It is funny, Bruce hit a gold mine and most of the new viewers are probably European and not really interested in trucks. These trucks are everywhere where I live and I have no interest in truck content really. But it took an American with fresh eyes on European trucks to make me interested :) I learn about something I until recently had no interest in.

@@yndsu if they do that they have to model certify the truck for the us market, and that is pretty expensive.
There is also som adaption that need to take place to make it not only legal but also a reasonable truck.
One issue is that european trucks both are heavier and have fewer tires. That dont work in the USA due to rules for tire pressure
You could have your own mobile clutch shop trailer and drive around in a scania and dial in every one’s doo😂
I saw loads of old cabovers with an electric pump plumbed into the normal manual system when I used to go to work with my dad on holidays (30 yrs ago and they were older trucks at the time). Some had a valve, some replaced the hand-pump with a combo unit.
I'm sure you could mod a power steering pump into the plumbing and save yourself loads of pumping every time you need the cab up.
Hi Bruce , I did international work in Europe for 50 years, I was a Scania driver from 1974 with my first being the V8 140..At the time it was around 300 hp at least a third more powerful than anything else on the road with the exception of the F89 Volvo…I have never see a better all round truck in all those years, I’ve driven other makes including US trucks but none ever come close to Scania with Volvo a close second…My Last Scania was a V8 S650 an absolute mountain stormer , I did have an S770 on demonstration for a few days and I really didn’t notice much difference in my own and the S770… Scania do a bonneted version like US trucks and also a longline sleeper cab , they could easily match the US Volvo cab specs , they will always be higher than a US truck but even the T range will have far superior all around visibility than any US truck…The disadvantages are Scanias are heavier than American trucks , a lot of US owner operators still want these old fashioned monstrosities and will take a lot of convincing…The other problem I see is this , do Scania even want to be in the US market?…They are at maximum output and with a quality mark like this they don’t need to look for more business 🤷🏻♂️, if they do however as soon as drivers see and drive these amazing trucks there’s no going back to the past they will demand them…I do believe that Scania may just see an option with Bruce 🤔🤔🤔, he’s a guy that gets stuck in ,is enthusiastic and seems hooked on Scanias so who better to promote this fabulous truck range…
Great response and I totally agree with you. Albeit I've kinda always had more of a soft spot for Volvo over Scania especially with iShift. However it's only marginal. In my view and I'm sure you'll agree, the Swedes have all been head and shoulders above their competition.

They were here in the 80s . They left because of the 3rd party tradition. Wich means they don't like putting stuff on that truck that is not made by them . Is a shame if you ask me because they are far superior then what we have here in the US.
To be honest there are so many truck drivers here that would turn their nose up at any Euro truck because they are too “car like” on the inside, automatics, and not stuck in the 70s with a long nose. There are so many that put down our Volvos as plastic trucks and bad mouth the people that drive them and those same people are crying like babies because their precious Peterbilt got rid of a 2 piece windscreen and made the cab bigger. I adore Scania and think they are amazing, but so much negativity to anything modern in the US trucking culture.

And there is all kinds of hate on automatics. Something about that crowd just want trucking stuck in the 70s and nothing newer.
Scania is already in the states: International. They even started to built the factory for the new in-line 6 engine, the scania super.

The air compressor being easy to access looks awesome. Kenworth could learn some things from Scania. Wish we got these or a North American specific Scania model.
Good evening Bruce I'm from Brazil and I've been a professional driver for a while now, I've worked with Ford Mercedes goods and Scania trucks, I currently work with an Iveco truck. In my humble opinion Among all these trucks the best one I like is the Iveco. The engine brake is better and safer, and there isn't a lot of plastic that ends up bothering you.
We are to load and unload containers on wheels (upto 54 in one trailer), adjusting the airsuspension to get the right inclination of the trailer is a BIG help!!!
Superb trucks! I have a 1972 80 Super, the cab is somewhat crusty but the chassis and mechanics are top notch! The engine starts with just one push of the starter button.

That wheel loader driving past is a Ljungby L30 I belive. And I think it's the only wheel loader that uses Scania engines.

Tons of drive train options to be had on these. AWD are 4X4 or 6X6 axle configs. Then a bunch of tandem config options, even the 10X4*6 (twin front steering + one rear)

Those recessing stairs is also an invention by Scania. You find it in those 4-series that you have back home. And the stairs are wide compared to competition.

People think cabovers are unsafe in a crash
All trailer has air-bag suspension. However, not all trailers are fitted with remote ride-level control. Mostly because we change the trailer very often. So different system for that. But eventually, they will begin to work together on that because we all want it to work on all trailers.
We don't lift the 3rd axle entirely during wheel slippage. There is on all the truck and 3-axled buses a push button that will reduce the air-bag pressure on the 3rd axle, thus shifting some of the load to the drive axle. And then when you come up in speed it will re-apply the normal pressure/load to the 3rd axle.
And the mirrors, it is by law, can't legally remove them in EU. Though can replace them with cameras.
You have Dutch second-hand Scania' that's why you have the bed above the windscreen. That's not standard and normal in the rest of the EU.

Hi Bruce, wow your really following scania trucks very much that you could be America s first dealer franchise, that's if your country allows buyers to choose better engineered trucks from Europe that exceed standards of us and then the emissions on top of that , combined with fuel economy and safety standards it's a completely clear choice for many smart operators
every truck needs a trailer, don't forget about the trailers. Europe has 5 leading companies that make those fancy many steering wheels trailers
And also trailers with electric drive axel and regenerative braking.
It's very rare to see a Scandinavian registered truck with a single rear axle. You see that on trucks from former East Europe. Like the Baltics and Poland. And if you look inside your truck there is a button that makes your truck lift the support axle(s) if it starts to spin. To give your truck some more traction.
And if you can get your eyes of all beautiful trucks. Check out howe European busses are configurated. Look at the position of all axels. How much closer they are compared to US Busses. On a European bus you are allowed to ride the front and rear end over the curbs. Makes them way much easier to handle.
Love to see how you opens up the interest for Swedish and European trucks. Would love to see you bring your brother on next trip and let him experience this top of the line trucks. Would love to hear his thoughts and input's
Single rear axle is by far the most common setup across Europe except for the UK (pushed and steered tag axle) and Scandinavia.
@@sic22l In Finland you get two tons more with dual wheels or steering singles on the tag axle. Steering is more expensive and dangerous on slippery turns with a short wheelbase. So duals it is except on long wheelbase trucks.

I would love to see Scania send you a 770 tandem drive to the us for a big cross country round trip, maybe working along the trip with American truckers off all kinds. That would be the real comparison.
Something very intriguing about Scania V8 engines that left me speechless was when on a documentary I saw that engine at every low temperature starting up like if it was summer, at my 71 years of age I have never seen a V8 diesel engine, but the American diesel engines during winter time are harder to start.
Scandinavia have cold climate during winter. They are used to engineer their trucks for such.
My K100E had an air driven hydraulic pump for raising the cab! 1989! Great truck 444, 18 speed, 4.11s in the 46,000 rears. Drove it for 18 years, then went to a conventional….didnt like that at all!!
Some European trucks now have optional smart cameras and screens instead of mirrors where the camera tracks the rear of the trailer during blindside reversing, European trailer designs are also light years ahead of some of the oddball spread axle designs common in the US.
Volvo offer a lift axle option on their double drive trucks in Europe by replacing the inter axle (power divider) differential with a clutch that disconnects drive to the third axle as the tyres lift up clear of the road so I just don't get why operators prefer Peterbilt.

I much more perfer one drive axle then tandem drive. Its easyer to turn in tight space, less fuel and less tirewear.
If push the weight so you got 19 metric ton on one axle and keep lift axle lifted any tanden can try keep up slippery climbing.
Only reason for tandem (exept its cool) is if you drive on gravel roads and such wich cant take 19 ton on one axle or if you got more then 2 axles rear so the combined weight is to high for one axle.

Been driving Scania in Australia for the last 8+ years ( mainly 620’s and 730’s )
They are just a different breed of truck, but no hate on American style trucks either.
Sometimes you just need to pick the correct tool for the job.
I used to say comparing a Euro truck to American, is like comparing a BMW to a Hot Rod.
Hot Rods are cool 😎, but I’d rather be driving/living in a BMW.

Perfect explanation of tag axel usage 👍 it should let you ride with it up if the total load is 40 ton maybe it was a little more weight on the truck axels to let it stay up while driving.
