    When you talk about the steps up to the cabin, you forget that almost all European drivers (and the passenger) leave their shoes on the top step. They do not want to drag dirt into the cabin, and drive in their socks. The top step is completely closed to the outside by the door, so the shoes stay there, and do not get dirty from the outside. The "shoe box" is there by design.

    • @DennisJonsson-m7n
      @DennisJonsson-m7n หลายเดือนก่อน +62

      Exactly! When I drove trucks, all over Sweden and Norway, and spending 3-4 days and nights with the cabin being workplace, livingroom, bedroom, office etc. the shoes stayed outside. So comfy not having to wear them all day, and less dirt in the cab. I mostly drove Volvo tho, and they had one thing that was better than on the Scania, the shoes didnt get wet as easily on the "shoe step" on the Volvos. Otherwise, the Scania was nicer for the most parts.

      @@DennisJonsson-m7ncould not agree more. I drove r500 in Norway , not so much on north , only about 200km above Trondheim. But shoes where always wet till we fix the rubber around dors where two ends of it meet just above shoebox. Scania have the best driver oriented and most cozy cabin of all trucks i drove.

      I'll still stay with a conventional. I'm in the deep south and radiant heat from the engine is always a problem, it just gets damn hot. Also don't want to deal with having to batten down the hatches so my stuff doesn't go everywhere when the cab has to be tilted forward. Last complaint, I have yet to meet anyone that likes the adaptive braking as there seems to be a problem with the system loosing its mind when you have a vehicle merging from an on ramp and the thing just goes full on with the brakes. One other thing, I had read that they used a V8 as a means of using less room under the hood. An inline six is a balanced engine, a V8 is not. All that being said I don't have any brand loyalty and it is a very nice truck with a lot of desirable features. I currently drive an International so it's not like I have a Rolls Royce.

    Two things you failed to mention; - the difference between the Scania and the Freightliner when thinking about cab insulation. You can drive the Scania and talk to your passenger, at normal conversational level. With the Freightliner, you would have to shout to make yourself heard. Secondly - Stand back and compare. The Scania is a BEAUTIFUL truck. The Freightliner is more 'utilitarian'. I have to ask why that is? Is it that truck drivers in the US are seen as second class citizens, and don't merit the luxury of a comfortable ride and the technology that could make their job safer and less stressful? It really drives the technology on these big rigs at insane speed. Every month we get new insane innovations, that makes Euro trucks even more powerful, and enviromental than the last model was. There's a Long line XXL version of your truck. The cab is extended 40" and can be customized to your personal taste and budget. I saw one this summer. I'd never seen one before... Even when I've stopped trucking some years ago and now works as a certified electrician - I couldn't resist to ask permission to have a look. That thing was sweet - it had the works. The painting and decals were master class and the interior was unbelievable... The owner/operator had spent close to 100 Grand USD on a custom design. The bed could be lifted up and make place for living space, an office or making food - almost like a small appartment with all the creature comforts of a modern lifestyle. I prefer Volvo over Scania... more a personal preference than a real difference in quality - both brands are great. However the Scania Longline XXL is hard to ignore. It's like a mix of a European and an American truck. Getting the best of both worlds. The manoeuvrebillity, fuel economy, safety and creature comforts of a European truck and a spacious cabin like in an American truck. The driver assist in the Scania is adaptive - radar keeping up with the traffic and surroundings - keeping distance to other vehicles, braking when other vehicles slow down. Your cruise control can be set at a given speed - you can overtake and getting back in line without having to brake if traffic slows down - when you can overtake again - you just pull out and it accelerates back up to the set speed. If I remember correctly - you can have the high beam and the windshield wipers on automatic - the light goes back to normal meeting incomming traffic and the wipers adjust to the rain. You can leave them on without having to even think about it. Lifting the axles makes hooking up to a trailer dead easy. You adjust the suspension to the height of the trailer. Way easier to only having to adjust the jacks for driving. But it's quite funny to see your excitement over things that more or less have been standard for 25 years or more in Europe. But there's one big difference between the US and Europe. In the US the trucks are often owner/operator in Europe truckers are operators in general. It makes a change in what reliability means. In Europe trucking companies have service agreements which makes the unexpected much less likely. There's a big limit to the DIY - but it doesn't matter - because you don't have to. An American owner/operator might choose old school - because you can be doing DIY when things go south. In Europe it's preventive maintenance and in the US it's maintenance. Things brake down - but you can be doing a lot yourself. I used to go offroading in my younger days in all sorts of vehicles - I'm oldschool in offroad for the very same reasons. You can repair or at least fix something to limb back to the workshop. That's just not happening in a modern truck - you need the cavalry with the expertise and the right tools - read diagnostic tools. If I can ride in comforts not having to depend on my own skills - just throw in whatever makes life easier. Having to depend on my own skills - there's a lot I can do without. You reduce the list from nice to have to need to have. Drum brakes are a good example almost everyone can repair/fix drum brakes with basic tools. If I were an owner/operator drum brakes would make good sense. DIY could be the thing keeping you in business - working in your own time - you may not be paid... But you just don't have to pay others for the service. Time is money. You pay with your time. It's all about striking a balance. What battles are worth fighting and what are better left alone - leaving it and paying for others to deal with it.

      Drum brakes in a truck? Really? That won't stop even if it's empty. I didn't see drum in a truck since early '00, almost 20 years ago. I never in my life broke down from brakes. I broke down from tyres, coolant pump, turbo, intercooler, fuel pump. All these are the same in old and new ones and they can fail on both. Once I had a bunch of warning on my dashboard, I called Volvo, they checked it remotely, reset the ECU and I was on the road in 10 minutes. They changed a sensor and some cabling on arrival.

Is to mark the presence of the truck in roads that are coming from a little hill or are in the other side of highway with rails or bushes in the middle. As the lights are above the driver head, the going driver knows there is a truck coming and turn the high beam lights off. To avoid blind the truck driver. Nice?

    Let me add some things to the differences that Bruce already pointed out.
    The steer axle of the Scania is positioned far more to the rear as with the Freightliner. The result of this setup is that the weight of the cab and the engine + gearbox is almost completely on the steer axle. That steer axle is a 10 tonne (22,000 lbs) axle as far as I know, so quite a bit heavier than the standard steer axle of a U.S. tractor (12,000 to 15,000 lbs).
    The rear axles will be 13 tonne (almost 29,000 lbs) axles, so the two can carry about 57,000 lbs. The weight limit for the tandem axles of a U.S. truck is 34,000 lbs.
    The strength of the cab is another difference. Many U.S. truckers have no idea how strong such a cab is. It is not a flimsy affair like with U.S. cabs. These European cabs are made from the strongest steel, and mounted in such a way that they can move to the rear in case of an accident, thereby absorbing a lot of energy.
    Should Bruce Americanize the Scania? Certainly not, it will look stupid. There’s quite a lot of after market Scania bling bling available in Europe, use that. I know, it has to be imported etc. , but it will look far more authentic.
    What Bruce could do, is mount a Nedking LED nameplate with the name of his company over the wind shield, between the two roof lights. That is a quite popular thing in Europe, and I’ve never seen it on a U.S. truck.
    What is the purpose of a truck with a 770 hp V8 engine? Well, for instance pulling a 60 tonne semi-trailer over the steep hills and mountains of Scandinavia. It is not meant for pulling a 36 tonne (80,000 lbs) semi-trailer over the flat planes of the U.S.A. There is good reason why Volvo U.S.A. doesn’t offer the 17 litre D17 engine with about the same power as this Scania V8.
    What to use this Scania for? Pulling flatbed trailers with loads like very heavy bulldozers of excavators, there it would shine.
