Well done! I've done this sort of repair with different types of chains - motorbikes, chainsaws etc, before they came up with removable links. Thanks for the video. 😉
@@GerardBurkeBurkesGarage All good, your videos have a lot of detail which helped me/gave me confidence to replace the timing chain myself. Saved a substantial amount of money. Not sure what it's like overseas, but in Australia Mercs seem to attract inflated prices. And the little 1.8L in the engine bay reasonably easy to work on.
Great video got to appreciate the footage put in of actually using the chain tools close up. Great location on the W204 1.8. In England nearly every W204 has the OM651 diesel with limited access to the chain.
Great vid !! How did you get the engine timed so that you could fit the lock tools? I would think you can’t just turn engine over by hand? Sorry I’m a noob . Also could you please tell me what is the name of the clamps you use to hold chain in place and where did you get them please ?
Hi from greece . Owner of w203 1.8 184hp . I want to buy a timing chain kit and gears together. I see a lot of oem kits at aloexpress or ebay at 200-250$ . Do you have experience about these kits? I think they are chinese. Is this too bad for purchase??
Hi man, nice video, i just want to ask when its needed to change the timing chain??? I have a Mercedes Benz C180 Kompressor 2005, it has 186000 km, i got it with 140000, lately i have heard that they suffer from the timing chain and i dont want to loose my engine because of this. When i brake and the RPM of the engine start to decrease i hear a small whine from the engine, and dont know what that is, Maybe the chain?? Thanks
Great video. Have you seen the diagnostic video that ends up with the crankshaft pull being the culprit ? The timing marks had moved 40 degrees. Seems an ongoing problem that needs checking when ever you play with one of these engines.
Hello Gerard, really enjoying this video. Isnt it neccesary to replace the lower chain as well, that drives the balance shaft? or dont they have an issue? BGS sells the TC5690VFK kit for this M271EVO engine but that is a roller chain kit i.s.o. a plated tooth chain and sprockets. Will it still fit? Thanks in advance! Hans
Wonderful video. I am actually looking at a 2014 E350. Being a VW/Audi guy, I'm used to belts! Are there many problems with these chains? Thanks for any answers. Cheers! EDIT....I got to the point of the chain removal. Used to wrench bicycles. LOL. I have that tool! 😂
Hey Gerard! We've nailed down a solution for the issue with the locking mechanism in M271 EVO engines by designing completely new VVT gears. Interested in trying them out?
How long does it take time to do this job when you have the tools and knowledge? I have done this to a V6 320CDI and i think for me, beginner, first try, 4 hours. Didn't find then any decent videos. This video is SUPER!
I want to but a beautiful 88 300 SEL. It has 95k and owner will sell for $4,000. If I have to do the timing chain, it may not be so bad because it’s a low price. What do you think car runs incredibly well is it in desperate need of a new timing chain just because of his age and the fact that it has 95,000 miles.
That's how I have always done it. 🤷♂️ and I have been working on these cars for 20 years. I take a dremel tool and ground the pins flush. Then just use a screwdriver and pop off the links. Then I attach the new chain and run it through. Then I use the specialty tool to re-link it. Many techs at MB do it the same way.
Your doing it wrong. Remove the 13mm then install with the 19mm all the way tight to the chain and this holds it in place. Then install the 13mm and drive out the pin
While I completely agree that is the way to do this job in most cases, it was not the most suitable or comfortable for me on this job. 1) when it secured in position like that the view of the pin is erased, there is no view to be 100% that you are pushing the pin exactly where you want it. 2) the tool I have has a bigger push pin than the pin that is being pushed through, so once I got to the stage of being flush I could visibly see it and stop winding the 13mm in with excessive pressure, which may cause damage to the link if not aligned. 3) I recommend using which ever way is safer/easier for you to do the job, it is not always a one way fits all. Maybe there is a better tool out there that has a small pin and would push the pin right through, I would have used your method if mine was that way. Doing it this way did turn out to be 100% successful with no issues, as long as the job gets done successfully both tech and customer will be happy 💪👌 Thank you for posting your info always good to hear feedback, it's great for viewers and knowledge sharing🙏🙏👌👍💪
Mercedes makes very unreliable and unquality vehicles. I owned w203 for 13 years and now w204 180cdi from 2012.I have timing chain noise at only 154 000km.Same issues like bmw n47 engine.I also have totally rusty rear subframe steering wheel lock broken very unquality piezo injectors plastic thermostat and plastic water pump...Mercedes is one big joke.I will never buy any mercedes again
Finally. Thank you so much for these videos sir, you are really helping a lot of people including myself. God bless you.
Glad to hear that, thanks for the comment
Thanks!
Thank you so much for the kind gesture, it is very much appreciated Kevin :)

Do you have a video of you doing a 2007 C200 W204 timming chain?

Thanks James, I appreciate it 👍
Need to know how to remove the cover i front. I only get the drivers bolt on the bottom behind the cover. Cant see how you remove the passenger bolt..
Do you have any videos of stripping a W204 engine with broken timming chain and show what damage it causes?
I have a 2012 cls 550 how much should a mechanic charge me to fix

hi nice video . I am changing a chain and venos / cam sprockets as chain jumped off does the crank sprocket wear ?
Can you change the balance chain lower down the same method?
Gerard what is the best timing chain brand for a mercedes CLS 320 CDI OM642 engine 2008?

Anyone know the year make and model. Possibly engine size 2.0l, 3.0l, 1.0l? Any info, or are we just going with generic Mercedes.

Use a 13mm ratchet spanner for removing pins, makes life easier.

How the heck do i find part 2 of your video
My crankshaft will not move more than 180 degrees and one valve I checked will not come back up after rotating engine.

Where’d the second part to this lol
In the description and I have made a playlist on my channel.

great sharing video
If your throwing away the chain and not reusing it why not just get a grinder and cut it ?

I think it’s just to avoid dropping metal into the engine for noobs like me lol
You just cannot beat the old pushrod engine, non of this shit to worry about.
Yeah but no vvt on them
Special tools ,special tools ,This should not be done without special tools.
