    Happy to see that newsstand copy get the 9.8! Heard that the newsstand was a much smaller %print run than direct copies as many were transitioning from the racks to the comic shops; thinking all my copies were from the comic shop as I had a better chance at a non half-bent copy. Most of my newsstands came from a gas station & a early vhs rental shop, as they placed the comics on a horizontal ground shelf along with the magazines.

      You are right.. just think of all those hands on the books at gas stations, convenience stores, etc.. it's a miracle there are any 9.8 copies out there

    CGC is grading so hard in 2023. Had a spiderman 1 Todd that was in an estate sale that has not seen the light of day in 30 years and I received a 8.0. Flawless book. Still in the poly bag mind you, no grader notes.

    • @ImproveCollectingComics
      @ImproveCollectingComics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah they grade the poly "crease" fairly harshly. 7.5 to 8.5 is the norm

    We are definitely paying the price for the new and improved turnaround time on CGC modern submissions. I made a rookie mistake of sending in an X-men 101 under the modern tier. It was easily a 9.0 with a very good probability of 9.2. It came back 7.0. If you want comics graded accurately, you've got to fork over the money to send them in the economy tier. It might cost twice as much in grading fees than the modern tier when considering having to pay for fast track, but you'll save a little in the long run by not having to submit the same book twice (paying for shipping to/from twice). CGC has quite the racket going with the modern tier--they get people to submit the same comic multiple times.

      Yeah, it's kinda lame that we are forced to try and figure out how to game the system.. it seems a bit better training would go a long way. But as someone who has had employees before, I know it's hard to find good help. On the flip side, they might be just as likely to give us a higher grade than a book deserves too, so sometimes we "benefit" from that. I don't really see that as a good thing. I have seen 9.6 and 9.8 books out there that are ridiculously flawed.

    Hmm that's a little strange. I was sure this was going to be another all 9.8 video. Maybe it's because they were all essentially the same comic they all got graded against each other and they didn't want to give all 9.8's (even though they should have). Anyways, another great video!

    So, when you go through the effort of buying a book, clean and press, submit for grading, and then selling... What do you hope to get as a minimum profit?
    Obviously, the higher the profit the better, but do you have a minimum dollar amount you hope to make to ensure everything you go through is worth the effort?
    When I go through my collection to evaluate what is worthy of my time and effort, I try to aim at a $50 profit margin

    • @ImproveCollectingComics
      @ImproveCollectingComics  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think of the books as an asset, so if the "worst case scenario" happens, I want to be somewhere around break even. I do figure shipping, taxes, etc. into it.
      For example, when I look for 9.8 candidates, I look for books that look nearly flawless but realize there could be some hidden defects. So, I buy high grade books with the assumption that they could get 9.2-9.4. So, I make sure I pay a price that will at least break even if it came back at 9.2-9.4.
      I find that being ultra-conservative with the buying leads me to almost never lose money on a book. It does happen, but it is rare. I am not concerned about outliers, though.. I only worry about the average result over time.
      Last year, I was just a beginner.. so I worked mostly on minor keys or books I just liked. I wasn't concerned with making a huge profit... however, I did do pretty well. Those 9.8's really pay off if you happen to get one on the right book.
      This year and as I get better at the hobby, I am going to do bigger books. I may get to the point where I mostly work on books that give an average profit of something like $500, maybe even higher. I think specializing in high-end books could be fun. (if not a bit risky over the short term)
      Thanks for the question!

    If you send 25 books in and do pre-screen for 9.8 I feel that they are much more likely to give you 9.8 so they can slab all of your books and charge you for them all. Much higher % of 9.8 when I press everything and submit pre-screen. If you are doing books like this that's what id do, all books you want the 9.8 on

    • @ImproveCollectingComics
      @ImproveCollectingComics  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would love to do a 25 book submission at some point, I just never seem to have 25 books at one time that are 9.8 candidates. I only buy a few and take my time on them. I do have a bunch of new books I bought last year, I could submit them. But I was keeping them raw for now

  • @kevinrcolvin6301
    @kevinrcolvin6301 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I sent in 14 modern books that I inpsected very carefully, was the original owner, and thought all looked like 9.8 candidates. Only 5 came back 9.8s, and they don't look any different than the 9.6s. I think it's a total crapshoot now what CGC will give the grade, and as many have noted, they own 9.8s that aren't as good as the 9.6s that they recently got back. I'm holding off on any new modern submissions until they're grading is more consistent. The value difference between the 9.8s vs the 9.6s is just too large to take a risk on CGC right now.

    • @ImproveCollectingComics
      @ImproveCollectingComics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    why do they have a "9.9" or "10.0" if they never give books those grades? if that level of perfection is impossible doesnt it make the scale off balance if nothing can get those grades?

    • @ImproveCollectingComics
      @ImproveCollectingComics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like how rare they are, because I literally have maybe seen 5 books ever that maybe deserved 9.9. A 9.9 is 0 human caused defects and maybe 1 or two production defects.
      I almost never see a 2 defect book, much less 1 or 0.
