The AFL should bring back State of Origin, it would be a great business move! Play a Pre-Season tournament, so the coaches won't mind the players playing. More games and high qaulity games means more money from T.V Rights, among other things.
Aust Opinion Absolutely! Bringing back State of Origin in a tournament would create a whole new dimension to the sport, a whole new season! The AFL would also get money from Merchandise and ticket sales!
The players don't want to do it because you're playing a game that means nothing and you risk injury. And the people didn't care when it was on, you just have to look at the last few years such as a whopping 26,000 at the MCG to see Vic and SA in 1999. Or an astounding 13,000 between the Allies and Vic in 1998.
None of that is true. More than several surveys over the last 10 years has stated over 80% of players and fans want it to return. You're other points, the games far from mean nothing, they're huge in significance, just read quotes from Brent Harvey, Greg Willams, Gary Ablett Sr, Gerald Healy, Gary Lyon and many others. At its peak AFL State of Origin has been described just as popular as Rugby leagues. In South Australia they had a Catchcry called Kick a Vic and they would bring signs of it to the game. And to your point as games in the last couple of years, there's a variety of factors to that. For 1, in 1999 at the MCG that day was a freezing cold day and pissing down rain. Which obviously contributed to the crowd, I know because I was going to go, looked outside at the weather and didn't go. The game in 1998 was against The Allies in Queensland. A new team, in a non AFL state, of course you're not going to get a big crowd. And in the last couple of years coaches put pressure on players not to play, and a number of the best players didn't play. In the 2nd last game in Vic vs SA, in Adelaide it got 40K, which is a big crowd in Adelaide. They should play State of Origin in place of International Rules, post season. Play a 3 Round, 2 week tournament. And give incentives for players to play, have Premiership Medals and Premiership Cup and have cash prizes for Best-on-Ground. Having 5 extra All-Star games a season, would make a ridiculous amount of money from Televsion Rights.
Aust Opinion Your player incentives better be a hell of a lot of money if you want players to have the desire to maintain match fitness and play these games when they're meant to be on holiday.
Wouldn't have to be anything, for years over 80% of players want it to return. Fitness wouldn't be a problem, because they happily play International Rules games at the same time, this would just be a replacement.

The Big V? U mean all of AFL State of Origin. Don’t Exclude South Australia and Western Australia 🤦♂️. But yeah it was killed because the popularity of it went down, now people want it back, I don’t blame em. The only state of Origin we ever got after it’s stopped was the 150th anniversary game and the Bushfire relief game unless u count the State League Games of the SANFL vs WAFL
The AFL should play a game like this every year
