The best part of that Grand Final was seeing James Hird winning the Norm Smith Medal after all the pain and suffering he had gone through the last three years with injuries and then seeing him hug his wife Tania and his daughter Stephanie, who had nearly died the week before makes that grand final win ever more satisfying
@M Im a soccer supporter as well and is played by more Australians and suburbs than Aussie Rules but this is about Essendon's 16th premierhip so why post this here?

Been an Essendon supporter, good to see us winning a game.lol. Footy was better to watching in those eras. Was more direct and players played in positions, and in most cases the game was faster back then. These days can be too much keepings off, and then when they bomb it to the forward line sometimes there is no one there. When both teams are following the ball they must be wasting energy. Plus skills of players were just as good if not better during those eras compared to todays.
listening to neale speak here then seeing him speak on the tv yesterday really stirs the emotions... its very sad seeing his health declining :(

Looking back at this now, I think we lost this game before we ran out there- we look very emotionless and bleak. I think we were dreading playing Essendon and wanted to just get it over and done with as quickly as possible, even if it meant we'd lose and lose we did.

Looking back at that era the Bombers should have won '99, '00 and '01, all in all you'd call it an overall failure, they spent all that time building an elite list yet somehow only came away with 1 premiership.
2001 they were beaten by a better team. 1999 is questionable. Had Essendon fallen over the line against the Blues in the prelim they probably would've lost the grand final. North were hellbent on winning 1999 after they choked in 1998

Hird was actually the best he had 29 disposals and kicked 2 Goals and Blumfield had 23 disposals and kicked 1 goal so Hird was clearly the best player on the ground.
Hird was the captain so he got he’s medal at the end.
The current Bombers are a shadow of this group. James Hird is not a coach. It's sad what this team has become.
