I Was Fortunate To See The Late Great Cozy Powell Back In 1980. It Was On The Rainbow "Down To Earth" World Tour. It Was Held At The Long Beach Arena, Ca. I Also Attended The Emerson Lake And Powell Concert Back In 1987. This Took Place At The Pacific Amphitheater In Costa Mesa, Ca. Two Incredible Tours!!

Cozy had already achieved legendary status with Rainbow but went one step further as not many drummers could step into the shoes of the great Carl Palmer. Those quads are the basis for the intro of You Could Be Mine by G n R with Matt Sorum.
Unfortunately this drum intro solo was not played on live. If it ever was played, woulda been so awesome. RIP Cozy. Thanks for the rate footage. Never seen this before.
For some reason Rainbow only played Stargazer a few times during dio's era. Unfortunately there are no DVD recordings of those performances. Tere are a couple of videos and audios of Stargazer recorded on the Rising Tour but the quality is not good.
Many others still around. Nicko McBrain, Vinny Appice, come to mind for rock, but there are so many other master of masters still kicking. Losing Niel is unimaginable. I still cant wake up to the reality of it. Great video!!!
Cozy Powell with Rainbow is paramount. With Jeff Beck also. The stuff after Rainbow was great but not like his drumming in Rainbow. He had the energy you could never replace in that group.
Cozy, was a traditional studied Drummer. "Came up w/ Great parts in Drumming". Get away from learning a triplet back and forth and move on. Seen, Him w/ "Jeff Beck" and it was spot on Flawless at Carnegie Hall, yrs ago.
Although no professional drummer would consider Cozy a technical player, and I mean no disrespect here, he was amazing. I was fortunate enough to see him a few times up close and the power he played with was incredible. I have a drum stick of his and its like a broom handle. I loved his style, he was so cool, and a really nice guy. So sad his untimely passing.
I might give a slight edge to Neil Peart, but Cozy was an awesome drummer. He should be mentioned in any sentence that contains Peart, Bonham, Moon or any of the other greats. Saw him in '78 and it was a tour de force.
Best drummer I've ever seen.....And I've seen a lot. We still love you Cozy.
