Yes yes yes. I had terrible heartburn and reflux for at least 25 years, and used to joke that Tums were at the top of my food pyramid. I was on Nexium, antacids- and sometimes also needed a bit of baking soda in water. Due to repeated bouts of food aspiration during sleep, the doctor recommended either surgery, or to stop eating after 7pm. I chose that - and began sleeping with two pillows, which helped. About that time, I also began experiencing periodic hypoglycemic episodes, and was advised to eat frequent, small meals/snacks. Then, about a year and a half ago, the internist mentioned my A1C was at borderline pre-diabetic levels and I left the office, a bit shocked, as I’d spent decades eating what was considered a healthy diet, low in saturated fat, with whole grained products, fruits, vegetables, yogurt. Confused, I went home determined to fix that problem, if I could. I began a low carb/ketogenic diet, and within probably two days, the heartburn was gone. I thought it might have been a fluke - but have not had even one Nexium, Tums, or other antacid, in 15 months. So, yay.
My GERD was awful. It disappeared a couple weeks into Keto when I gradually (very very gradually) weaned myself off of 80 mg Prilosac. It was a terrible time with a lot of rebound, but I am so much better now! Just know that rebound reflux will happen if you go cold turkey and that I had to use Tums as a bridge to get to healthy. Now if I have any simple carb I will get reflux and am reminded of how bad my life was before keto.
I was on 40mg of Esomeprazole twice daily for 6 years. I went carnivore 28 months ago. Reflux disappeared.🤷🏻♂️ It gave me a Schatzky ring in my oesophagus.
