  • Episode Notes:
    My-oh-my do I have a contentious relationship with Hellblade. It think it's one of the strongest narratives you'll ever experience in an interactive medium...... I also think it's one of least enjoyable games I've played in years. The combat is shallow and the moment to moment exploration feels like busy work. But the visuals, the INCREDIBLE audio design, and the personal nature of the story coupled with the artful way Ninja Theory chose to tell it more than makes up for the repetitive play. If you're unfamiliar with it, play. This video ain't going nowhere, and it's an important title as being an interesting middle-tier game. Otherwise, kick back and enjoy.
    Patreon Stuff:
    A big thanks to all of my patreon subs, who have helped in making this possible. As a token of my gratitude, they are granted early access to my videos, and have the ability to vote on what game I cover next. To those who are interested, and would like to donate, feel free to visit:
    www.patreon.co...
    Your donations go a long way, even if it's just a dollar. If enough people give, I might be able to do this full time and get some serious production value in these movies.
    A Declaration:
    Welcome to the Gameological Dig, a channel devoted to playing games with obtuse and interesting stories. The aim of this channel is to treat these game worlds like an archeological site, meant to be unearthed and studied, so that we may better understand their plots, characters and themes.

    This is what this channel is all about. A deep voice, spinning the tails of lore in narrative-heavy games. Love this episode.

      Man it kills me that this channel doesn't have millions of subs. This level of quality is remarkable, i don't even know what to say...

      The truth is... it's a small market. That's why games like SOMA (and even Hellblade) are so underappreciated and have even caused companies like Frictional to make more mainstream games (this is what Frictional, the makers of SOMA, have decided to do with their future games after the loss of money they experienced with SOMA).
      It's a sad truth, but truly deep and thought provoking games, and other forms of media including this channel, are destined to not be very widely received because most people just don't understand it enough to appreciate it.
      The best we can all do is support each other and enjoy the few gems out there that are on the level of SOMA, Hellblade, etc...

    When I went through this game, I had thought Senua's problems were more manifestations of extreme elements of post-traumatic stress and paranoid schizophrenia, but thinking about it and reading up a bit after this video, I think your call of classic psychosis combined with sustained psychological abuse was a better fit. Well spotted, and well done on another video.
    I agree with what the others say that this is one of the best channels of this type out there. If only you posted more often...

    Another great video man. Damn this is such a beautiful game and I'm glad to see a TH-camr that wasn't completely lost in the story and it's integration into the gameplay. I normally don't like linearity but imo this game nails it, this is how linear games should be made - every step you take reveals more about the story, it's hardly ever(if at all) separated between the gameplay and cutscenes. Once it starts the story is constantly moving forward with no pauses just to add filler. The only time it stops is when you're not moving forward but even then the voices fill that void by mockingly trying to push you forward.

    • @GameologicalDig
      @GameologicalDig  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fox Die Hellblade should be a primer on how to handle non-linear narrative. It drip feeds information in a way that has you noticing new details with every play through. I didn’t love playing it, but I loved coming to understand it. Whatever Ninja Theory do next, I’ll be there. They’ve earned it.

      There's good hope for their next game, I believe. From what I've heard, they're now part of Microsoft with all resources they need, but also complete artistic freedom. One can hope that those claims are true... unfortunately, that also means it probably won't come to PS4. :(

    • @WhiskeyTango76s
      @WhiskeyTango76s 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been thinking about playing through Hellblade again since I did only go through it once. On your 2nd run were you able to notice quite a few details you missed on your first? The last time I played it was about 3 days after it's release. Oh and I meant to ask this in my previous post - wasn't Surtr a Fire Giant, not a God?
      That would suck if that meant whatever major title they work on next doesn't come to PS4 but it would atleast make it to where it wasn't a waste for me to buy their XB1X and they desperately need some good exclusives, or atleast exclusives I'll consider buying that aren't racing or like CoD. It would suck for people who don't own both systems but atleast the PS4 has some amazing titles that would make up for that loss I suppose.

      Anas Bahi Haha, these videos take time, though not normally THIS long. I hit plenty of snags along the way - was originally supposed to be a Silent Hill series, but it just didn’t work out - so things took WAAAY longer than they should have. Thanks for the patience.
      As for Nier, you might be waiting a while. I did start it, but I’m not fully engaged by it. The reality is I don’t have much a stomach for anime/anime inspired content. And because of the amount of lore from previous games, it might be too much of an undertaking. But never say never! Who knows how I’ll feel about it when I beat it.

    Very fine video. It's nice to have everything covered so well, particularly for a game featuring an unreliable narrator. I will very much disagree with your opinion of the gameplay though. I thoroughly enjoyed the combat, exploration and puzzle solving, the pacing seemed right and I feel too much more "game" would have been to the detriment of the overall design, making progress more frustrating; it's a game I feel was designed to be completed, experienced in it's entirety, not to block people from progressing by requiring ninja-skillz (not that I mind those). In short, I bloody loved it, and your video wasn't bad either :)

    Just wrote an assignment at ITU in Copenhagen as an MSc student in Games. Played through Hellblade fairly recently and the task was to write a narrative analysis of a game, so it wasn't a question for me that I would like to write about Hellblade. However, just after playing through the game once, it has become one of my all-time favorite games, your video still helped me to understand some part of the story which were not totally clear for me. The game is an art and a masterpiece, just as your video!

    The blood eagle happened in lore supposedly, it was one of Odin's things. It can't happen in real life, the pain would kill the person and send them into shock, but maybe it'd scare off invaders... it's first step is flaying.

    I’m not psychologist, but I do work with people with mental illnesses like dementia and personality disorders daily. The “Sight”, which from what I’ve seen in game, seems very much like a schizophrenic offshoot if not full on schizophrenia. Hellblade has an interesting take on mental illness both because of its setting and its manifestation in game. It seems exaggerated (though it is a piece of historical fantasy so some artistic license is necessary), but through this exaggeration the subjective anguish can be more easily displayed. Hellblade as a game disappointed me somewhat but the narrative and nuance really captivated me. *I love y’all’s channel keep it up!!*

    Actually the idea that Hadrian's Wall was built to keep the Picts out of Roman Britain is thought to be incorrect, as cool as it is. It was more likely that I was simply a means for the romans to establish secure, contiguous border check points for travelers and merchants.

    Blood eagles weren't real-the misconception stems from an error in translation in a poem. Berserkers are also misunderstood-the word means bear-skins and meant the rich/powerful warriors, not trance/drug using madmen.

  • @fullfildreamz
    @fullfildreamz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I wonder.... is the combat really that shallow? I really liked it, and I thought it had enough depth for the amount of time you'd spend actually doing it. Also, the animation of fighting looks so breathtaking... I'd go as far as to say it looks the best I've ever seen out of any game. But, that might also be my personal bias for the psychedelic animations.
    Also... what kinda shocked me about hellblade is how similar a heavy LSD trip is to her psychosis.

    • @MrSnaztastic
      @MrSnaztastic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It *looks* good, doesn't particularly feel good or enjoyable a lot of the time. There's little in the way of enemy variety and some sections get really spammy with them. Personally I think Hellblade is one of those games that might have benefited from less combat encounters, but then we'd likely have more tedious puzzles.

    • @Dillbob1
      @Dillbob1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Combat is pretty simple but not annoyingly so in my opinion. Fights are still entertaining. Jim Sterling actually stated it pretty well in talking about God of War's combat. The actual mechanics and flow of fights are similar in both games but God of War benefited from having AAA resources going into expanding its combat that Hellblade didn't do.

    • @WhiskeyTango76s
      @WhiskeyTango76s 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I enjoyed the combat as well, it's no Dark Souls but I had fun with it regardless. I spent about 20-30mins just fighting the enemies at the end because of that before finally letting it end but I think the music and sound effects had alot to do with it.

    • @GameologicalDig
      @GameologicalDig  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @MrSnaztastic summed it up perfectly. Though if you loved it, I can’t take that away from you and I wouldn’t if I could. I’m just hoping Senua 2 - if there is one - adds more enemy variety, combat mechanics and more stimulating puzzles.
      And I’ll take your word for it. Never done LSD and to hear you describe it like Senua’s delusions, I’m not sure I want too :-/

I think you have all of this completely backwards
