- I've had the 2024 Subaru Outback Wilderness for six weeks and a little over 4300 miles. I have driven it on a three thousand mile road trip and around town. Find out if I'm still happy with my new 2024 Subaru Outback Wilderness.

Just bought my Outback Wilderness in the same color a few days ago! Been too busy studying the owner’s manual and watching the video content to have driven less than 20 miles (sad, I know). Totally appreciate the content on what I’m sure to find out once I “road-trip” it. 👍🏾

own a 2023 outback base model and it was been great. took it on a journey to denver and drove great enjoyed it. do not need all the bells and whistles.

Thanks! It should get a little better as it breaks in a bit. I'm not sure if this is your first turbo but if you are heavy on the gas turbo's will not come close to the EPA numbers in my experience. Also if you are mostly driving in town or mountains it will suffer as well. Let me know if they get any better. Appreciate you watching!
Adaptive Cruise Control is great! We drove 376 miles on the interstate without touching the gas or the brakes, even through the slow down is construction zones and bottlenecks at exit areas.

Great looking car, we rented a ‘23 Forester Wilderness last winter for a week in New England and were super impressed. First extended time with the new global platform chassis, EyeSight/ACC, and current powertrain NA 2.5 and CVT. It rode superbly and handled well except for a bit tippy on sharp turns. Since it’s just the two of us, don’t go off-road ever, (if we were to, we would just rent a 4Runner) live in SoCa but go to the snow in the Sierras, we ended up getting the ‘24 Impreza RS. Coming from an ‘02 WRX wagon with a cassette deck, this is all new to me too. Just finished a 1400 mile road trip from San Diego to Mendocino and back and I’ve got things pretty figured out.
We have EyeSight 4.0, with the updated cameras, third camera and updated software so all of this may not apply.
Definitely put your AC to Recirc always, Max AC setting will put it there but otherwise you have to select, though it will retain settings. The only time we went into the full screen Climate Control settings were to tap that on and off, otherwise all adjustments were a click on the physical temp buttons or easy tap on the fixed fan buttons on the bottom of the screen.
Turn your Lane Departure to Lane Departure Prevention only, selecting Lane Departure Warning to Off. this will reduce almost all warning beeps.
Lane Centering as part of the ACC can be a mixed bag, very disconcerting when you are not used to it, but, on long stretches actually works really well if you treat it as the limited driving ability it actually has. As another poster pointed out, draping your hand on the bottom just requires a subtle tug every 15 seconds or so and the car will drive itself in simple circumstances for miles. We drove ours through hard core stop and go traffic in LA, 80 on rural freeways, and in tight turns of the coastal redwoods. Never missed a beat - car stopped hard on its own when it needed to, took the sweeping turns with aplomb, and forged ahead with confidence behind a lead car or on its own.
The solid chassis on these new Subarus and responsive powertrains can’t be beat. We’ve got the slightly updated NA 2.5 and CVT with a little more torque available 700 RPM’s sooner and with 3-500 lbs less than an Outback it feels very willing. Never notice the CVT, just the easy responsiveness. Averaging 33 mpg as well.

I agree with the ventilated seats. The dealership told me they don’t on the Wilderness because it’s « for wilderness » and worried the seats would get wet and go into the seat fabric padding ! I also wish it had memory seats positions for 2 drivers. Cheers
If you put your air controller mode into Diffrost/foot, it will automatically operate the AC as needed to maintain the vehicle temp that you set it to. I find this to be the best setting for maintaining an even temp throughout.

I’m in Miami where it’s hot. Very hot. I got some good tinting installed (including clear tint on windshield for UV) on all windows (the tinted windows that come with the car, as I understand it, don’t screen out UV radiation and a lot of heat). This has helped tremendously with keeping the car much cooler without hindering visibility. If you’re still having issues with the car being hot, you may want to try that. Also, the Subaru app allows for remote starting. I can never remember to use it but now with the tinting, no big deal. Thank you for the post.
PS Mine is a 2022 Onyx, Autumn Green, a dark color with a charcoal/black interior.
Thanks for the tip on the clear tint! While I forget about the app my wife does not and loves it. We also live in a place where heat is not something we have to worry about for a long time but was something we noticed visiting Houston. I'm in Atlanta and have a 2022 OB Touring, I have found the car cools faster/better when I leave it in full auto as compared to max cool. Seems odd, but that's how it works on mine. Also, if you dig into the menu settings some of the beeps can be turned off such as every time eyesight detects a car in front of you, etc. I was able to eliminate most of the unneeded beeps while keeping the systems on.

I bought a 2023 onyx XT, Went from a Ram, I have a huge Bullmastiff , He just steps right through the rear hatch now, no more trying to lift his ass up and push him in the cab. lol, Ordered some Falken tires and a couple of bolt on's, I'm ready for snow.

I took mine after a week of owning it across the country with my wife and 3 dogs. Using the roof rack with a topper for luggage and the rear for the dogs worked great, I used the eyesight down the highways giving me a bit of a break driving while using the Cruze , I was driving 12 hours a day . I got 22 MPG , Not great but I had a roof topper and plenty of weight with two of us and 3 dogs. I think the cars great for road trips. next will be some over landing as soon as ive set up the car proper.
That's awesome...and anything on top kills our MPG so really 22 was not that bad. I'm going to set mine up for light overlanding. We tend to take the RV and set up a base camp then go exploring for the time we are there. It's how I came up with Glamplanding. We used to be more overlanders...now we glamp in our camping and then explore. That's why I say "adventure without definition"...just getting out is what counts! Thanks for watching!

I bought a 2023 Forester Wilderness about 2 months ago, and I absolutely love it for all the reasons you love your Outback. I love the safety tech, the CVT is a total non-starter (works great with the 4.11 gearing), offers tons of value. Mine still has the older style infotainment with the real climate control buttons which I actually like. My only complaints are the auto-start/stop which thankfully can be overrided, the obnoxious seat belt warning chime, and I really think Subaru should have put a 235 size tire from the factory. I’ve tinted windows, added cross bars, Yakima roof top bike rack, and will eventually do wheels/tires. All in all, absolutely love all of Subarus Wilderness models. They aren’t just cosmetics. They really changed things for the better and offer probably the best bang for value in 2023 in a vehicle.

Last week I drove through southern and the Panhandle of Texas with my Crosstrek. I’ll say this, as a person who has had a black car the color makes a huge difference compared to a light colored car. My Crosstrek is white and 105F temps were okay. I however have driven under the same weather scenario and I swore I would never buy black or black interior car-just can’t escape the heat.
Nice car! 😊👍🏼 I have a Forester and when I point at least one center dash vent up and toward the middle of the car the AC cools down the vehicle noticeably better. 🥶

My forester middle vent barely blows air at all. I’ll Miss my 2006 as it doesn’t have so many problems.
You had mentioned navigating to the Max AC button, there is a way to change your buttons around. You can put the Max AC button down on the bottom next to the Home button to make it easier.

I may be picking up my OBW tomorrow. I had a 21 Touring XT before with the cooled and memory seats. The cooled seats did not make much difference but I will miss the memory seats. I really like the lower gearing in the OBW though. I never had any issues with my AC in the 2021 but Im sure the black color of yours does not help. I turn the lane keep assist off as far as the safety features. I agree nothing compared for the price because I checked out all the comparables.
Congrats on the new OBW! Lower gearing was one of the factors for us picking this model...and memory seats would have been really nice. My opinion is they didn't put them in the wilderness to have some model differentiators from other trim levels. I know you will love your OBW! Thanks for watching!
We have an Outback Touring XT and took it over Hurrah Pass in Utah in stock form with no issues.

Are you always manually adjusting your heat/cooling? I use the Auto button and leave at 70, I do notice when driving on the highway in the afternoon with the sun out with all of the glass it gets warm in my Outback I just bump the temp down to 68,67 degrees. I also do not turn on the lane centering feature, always feels like you are pulling on the steering wheel a little bit.
What did you average for gas on your 3000 miles? I have 2023 Touring with tutbo and we did a 3300 trip to Missouri back in June and we average 30.3 mpg. My car does have ventilated seats.
Just bought a 2024 Outback Wilderness in blue and now have just over 1k on it. Have been lucky enough to get 30 mpg on a tank fill after hwy use, hand calculated. Used the adaptive cruise and of course was behind trucks at times so that’s not straight 70mph with no one in front.
One thing noticed is a very faint high pitched whine, sounds exactly like a cicada bug, when over 20 mph, coming from the front. Can’t hear it over music. Hope it’s not a future trans issue.

I was actually surprised how good it was...it was almost driving itself which is way more than advertised. The two very small issues I had was it didn't think my hands were on the wheel and for my liking when passing it likes to be closer to the center line than I like. It didn't feel unsafe but closer than where I would drive. Overall really good system. Thanks for watching!
When you buy a black car with a big glass moonroof on top.. it's going to get warm inside.
I got 1.5 inch lift on my outback, and was able to go up just a little more (.5 inch) lift from there. Remember that when you change tires you have to replace all 4 + probably the spare.
Totally get it (although compared to most cars today its a pretty small sunroof). My biggest issue it the air vent is blocked by the steering wheel although I don't think I did a good job with that in the video. The tire issue can be one of the downsides of AWD. I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee...one tire had sidewall damage and I had to replace all four even though they still had half life left. I guess we all pay to play. Thanks for watching!
I agree about the heat in direct sunlight, which is why I had the windshield (and driver & passenger windows) tinted with infrared-reflecting ceramic tint. Oh, and I tinted the sunroof, too. Made a HUGE difference. Not sure about the laws in your area, so it might not be legal to tint the entire windshield... but it's light enough to not raise the ire of law enforcement.
VA is pretty tough on tint but the side windows are a must and will be done before our next road trip to MN. Appreciate you watching!
My 2017 forester cools ok in Texas but I thought the heater was underpowered and the vent hit my ankle so my toes would be cold.

Nice review. I just got my 24 OBW a week ago. It definitely gets hot here in the Sacramento CA area, but it's a dry heat :) I haven't really had any AC issues although ventilated seats would be nice. I only have 500 miles on it and have taken it into the sierras a couple of time for some softroading adventures. I have some minor gripes about it buuttttt they are minor so far and I would sound whinny. I love the adaptive cruise control. So far I hate the lane centering, I want to be in control. I haven't taken it on a long road trip yet but soon. Any way.... enjoy it!

What's a ventilated seat?
Check out Rallitek 3/4 inch spring lift (will also allow you to run a 245/65/17 w/o issue). I had their springs on my XT Touring and it took the sag out without affecting the plush ride. They have a 3/4 spring lift for the Wilderness and will eliminate the sag with weight in the rear and still give the plush on road ride.

I haven't noticed any wind or road noise. We are coming from lifted 4Runners with MT's so in my world everything is quieter than those so it might be just what I was used to. Appreciate you watching!

You can turn the lane departure off completely, including the warnings.

It would be cool if you could turn off the start stop like the lane departure but you can't. You have to press it all the time once you get in.
Or maybe a “profile” like highway mode or city mode.
Country mode would be awesome!

Does the infotainment screen wash out in the sun? I have an issue with my crosstrek where the sun washes everything out and I can't see anything on it.
Yep, it sure does in my OBW. I had the sun behind me the other day and couldn't see anything on 2/3rds of my screen, it sucked.
Such a bummer people have to live with this for so many years without an improvement.
I don't think its really that bad considering the screen size. It does have a little washout but in my experience its almost always been readable. I have an aftermarket Sony in my Sequoia and its horrible and you can't see it have the time due to washout and it was not a cheap unit. All things considered I believe it does a pretty good job. You mileage may vary.
We Love both our Outback and our Forester Touring.
Our Outback (my wife’s car) has more miles on it than my Forester, so the second year of the new Brat, we’ll be selling her Outback and buying a Brat.
As much as my wife loves her Outback, she actually loves my Forester more. She likes the height of the seating position, the heated steering wheel and the heated rear seats.
Both of our Subie’s are 2019 year models. Her Outback has 175hp, while my Forester has 182hp.
She wanted cloth interior, so I bought her the Premium. I told her that she would be happier with leather but she thought that she wouldn’t like it.
After I bought my Forester, she loves the Saddle Brown Leather.
Her Outback has 28K miles and my Forester has only 11K miles.
If we can’t get the Brat with Tan or Brown interior, then we’ll buy the new Toyota Stout AWD hybrid.
We’re hoping that the Brat will be offered with a hybrid.
It would be great if Subaru would offer the Wilderness as a naturally aspirated engine in a hybrid.
The hybrids torque comes from the electric motors, so not only does it get better fuel economy, but also has more torque, so there’s no need for a turbo.
Subaru has ALWAYS been behind on anything new. They’re very sluggish in offering a hybrid to the American market.
Furthermore if Subaru would use regular gaskets instead of silicone they would be unstoppable.
Oil leaks would cease and they would become as reliable as a Toyota.
It’s sad when you have to replace all the silicone “gaskets” with normal gaskets usually around 150K miles.
If Toyota would adopt Subaru’s symmetrical AWD system, then Toyota’s would be Perfect.
Likewise if Subaru would put regular gaskets in their vehicles, Subaru would exceed Toyota’s.
First Thanks for watching! I'm interested in the Brat and Stout as well. I will always have a Toyota in the family and it may be a tough choice between the two. It will be interesting to see real world pricing. I was interested in the Ford Maverick until dealers made a 30K truck a 50K truck with market adjustments. If you get one let me know.

Until I bought my wife her Outback in 21, we’ve been driving Toyota’s for 40+ years
@@glamplanding The Maverick has had several recalls on total wiring harness failures, brake failures, engine fires, gas tanks leaking, seatbelts and airbag failures.
We have a 11 Ford Ranger that had 2 recalls on the airbags but otherwise it’s been super reliable.
The new Ranger’s have problems with the turbo.
I like Subaru but I know they’re not as reliable as Toyota.
@@glamplanding I ordered a Maverick hybrid and after waiting 10 months it finally came in. I really wanted to like it but it only took a short while for me to sour on the whole experience. First, the interior was a symphony of squeaks and rattles, really the worst I’ve seen in decades. It had electronic glitches-random dash warnings, horn blew randomly. The hybrid system was malfunctioning and the dealer told me they were so backed up it would be months before they could even look at it. I think I had received three recall notices before I sold it for more than I paid to Carvana.
I now drive a 23 Outback and I love it. No recalls, feels very solid, super comfortable. I agree that the ac performance is just adequate and that’s probably my biggest complaint.

How do you feel about the automatic engine shutoff ? I find it intensely annoying on my Forester Wilderness. Even with it disabled, the engine will shut off when I put the car in park, and the moment I release the brake the engine starts again. WHY ??? What a waste of gas / unnecessary wear on the starter. I had the engine shut down once as I was pulling into a parking spot - and of course when the engine stops so does your power steering.
I love the Full Time AWD and the overall handling, but IMO Subaru REALLY made a blunder with this “feature”.
Hi! First thanks for watching! As for the auto shutoff I believe that became a federal mandate in late 2023 so automakers don’t have a choice on having it. I’m not a fan but don’t believe it’s Subarus fault as it’s my understanding all new cars have it.
Why didn't you buy a lighter color paint if you don't want the car to get hot?
What kind of mpg did you get on the road trip?
Why get Turbo version? We're you used to power in other cars?
I'm seriously looking at either a 23 or 24 Outback limited either XT or the 2.5L

Great questions!
We wanted the Wilderness trim and that is the motor that comes standard (and only option). We also two a small trailer for Mtn. Bikes and kayaks so even if it had to be optioned we would have gotten the bigger motor. On the road trip the overall average was 27.2...on a car which at the time only had 500 miles. We come from lifted 4Runners so this was a massive improvement for us. If you don't tow or need the extra ground clearance from the Wilderness package I think you would be very happy in a limited or XT with smaller engine. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

My wife and I aren't into towing or much off roading or even camping; but I do want to own a Subaru for the Ohio winters! I'll have to test drive the XT and the non turbo and decide from there.
If you're doing all street driving they're great. getting the turbo is easy ....180 HP VS 260.....more off the line speed easy passing. remember what you're driving a large station wagon of a car. load it up with 180 hp ? No Way .

I bought my wife a 2022 Outback non-turbo and it's been great so far. As for power, it's average at best. We've had 4 of the 2.5L powered Subarus throughout the years and this one is probably the slowest. Don't get me wrong, it's quite suitable for basic driving but if you're any type of enthusiast, it's a let down. I drove my brother's 2017 Forester XT this weekend and it's noticeably more peppy. I'm looking to replace my 2005 Forester pretty soon and another Outback is at the top of my list, but this time in the Onyx XT trim.
2021 Outback owner here. I open my windows to cool the inside of the car. I'm also a motorcycle rider, so having the air flowing around me just feels normal to me. I very seldom turn on the AC unit.

@glamplanding so far so good. Not much of a difference for me coming out of my 2021 Outback Premium, other than the power from the engine and some extra controls. But it drives just as well. Looking forward to camping with it.
My number 1 dislike is the engine auto stop start.

is the hot car problem simply the fact you bought a black colour car? was your previous car black?
It is possible thats a factor. We had this type of material in our 4Runner as well and it was red. The material would make you sweat on a summer day but the air vents weren’t blocked so that helped. We also need to get the side windows tinted (just haven’t had time) and I know that will help as well. Appreciate you watching!

Its a little tighter than I would like but still safe from hitting the window.
Having the HVAC controls in the touch screen is an accident waiting to happen. The screen response is way too slow. The gas mileage on the OBW is horrible and I find the ride too choppy compared to my other OB. The car looks great. I have black, and the power is awesome.
So far so good with mine...I have to admit in town the MPG are lower than what I was expecting but on the highway compared to our lifted 4Runner seems great for us.
Get ceramic tint will make a huge difference

Like everything mechanical you won’t see anything for a while yet being new won’t give you any idea how things will go.
Your hands can be at 10 and 2 on the wheel and it's still going to complain. The wheel does not have touch sensors, it's looking (or feeling) for torque input to the wheel. On long stretches of straight road, you likely aren't applying enough torque to the wheel, so i thinks you have let go. Just give it a little jerk now and then and it will stop complaining.

I challenge anyone to beat this car. Owned for over a year. Not gonna split hairs here. Simply put this car has been a Swiss Army knife for me. It does everything and then some. What’s even more scarier is the 2025 outback wilderness is a complete re design. Dealers who have seen pics said Subaru has knocked the new model outta ballpark which I’m interested in seeing. I also just read the other day where Subaru is going to be building a new outbacks in their factory in Japan which means quality control is going to be second to none. They’re only going to make the EV’s yeah here in the US so that we can get the proper tax credit which makes sense.

It hasn't...just got back from a four day camping trip with the RV and didn't drive it...started right up. Should I be concerned? Thanks for watching!
@@glamplanding maybe they fixed it but my 2017 forester and several other models had battery discharge problems. I went through two factory and two auto zone batteries, on my fifth now. I did have the computer updated so hopefully this won’t be a problem anymore. Always a good idea to have a battery jump starter in your car.

260 horsepower? It’s 182.
The Wilderness has the bigger turbo motor and 260 horsepower. You are correct that the base motor has 182…depends on trim level or motor selection.
