    Here is my Nikon Z50 honest field review for travel & wildlife photography. I try to answer the question my friends and students have been asking me: is the Z50 a good camera for those starting out on wildlife photography? I took the Nikon Z50 to Thailand to cover the Wonderfruit Music Festival and photograph elephants in an elephant sanctuary and was able to exhaustively test it out. Watch the video to see what I loved about it and what I didn’t. If you have been looking for a starter mirrorless camera for wildlife photography, the Nikon Z50 is it.

    I appreciate your evaluation.
    I am 74 years old and have been shooting Nikon since I bought my F in 1967.
    My initial transition into digital was a film scanner, since then I have had two Nikon point and shoot digital cameras but could never afford a ‘good’ DSLR.
    Now that no one will hire me because of my age I have time on my hands and sacrificed significantly for the Z50 two lens kit. I could not be more pleased.
    Everything I had tried before was pretty good for either photos or video, but this camera really excels in both areas.
    I am involved in Christian ministry and am working toward documentary and VLOG work where apparently this camera excels.
    I am excited.
    I was hoping with the FTZ mount to be able to use my lenses from the ‘60’s but apparently they need to be modified.

      Hi Larry, it's great to hear from you. What an interesting story and history! I'm glad the Z50 worked out for you. It does fill a specific niche in terms of user base and it's a blast to get feedback from those, like you, who fit smack in the middle. Enjoy the Z50. I also want to get Ai-S lenses and use them for my Z cameras.

    Coming from the Sony a6000 I always loved my girlfriends Nikon d7200. Since she already had a few nice F-Mount lenses I wanted to switch to Nikon but stay with mirrorless. Unfortunately I couldn’t afford the full frame Z6 or Z7 which are impressive. So I got myself the Z50 an what should I say... it’s so damn good. Really just a little slimmed down version of the bigger ones. The handling is perfect as well as the image quality especially in low light conditions. I’m using it for different kinds of photography. Mostly landscape and wildlife. Definitely going to keep it!

      I have the D7500 and I think on the Z50 you have the same picture profiles. You could try using the 'FLAT' profile and that would give you a low contrast image to work with.

    • @NoelGuevara
      @NoelGuevara  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is one way, but technically it's still not LOG. LUTs wont work as well on flat profiles.

    Noel, At a couple points you say this Z50 uses the "Expeed 6 sensor" from the Z6 and Z7...I think you meant to say the "Expeed 6 processor", no? Otherwise, a helpful review. I have the Z6ii and am looking for a smaller, lighter, every-day-carry option. Have tried the little Fuji models, but find their menu systems way complicated. It'd be nice to be able to use the same muscle memory from using my Z6 to my chosen 'smaller camera.'

    • @NoelGuevara
      @NoelGuevara  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the two kit lenses are great choices for beginners because they're inexpensive and are very, very good pieces of glass that you can use well into semi professional work. Great investment. Better than buying cheaper ones and then having to replace with better lenses later on.

    The main thing that stops me from buying the Z50 is the lack of possibilities to power it with AC/USB power especially when spare battery still today is hard to get hold of in Sweden. I would love to have one. I tested one I march last year, but ran out of battery often ...

    Did you try using the hot shoe to mount it on a tripod? By using a straight bracket and screwing it down from the top (camera below bracket) to keep it right side up and allowing all controls and feature available.

    • @NoelGuevara
      @NoelGuevara  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Donovan! No I haven't. Won't it be more tricky to use because of balance? Anyway, SmallRig came out with a Z50 vlogging mount that offsets the tripod to leave space for the monitor. I'll do a review when I get it. Thanks for watching and please like and subscribe!

    • @dct124
      @dct124 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Noel Guevara No it won't make it unbalanced.
      Small Rig cost $100 for the kit. Doing it my way won't go over $20, if one went to the hardware store for the materials it'd only cost them $5
      The Z 50 is too light and if your tripod is too light a simple counter weight is all one needs. Just imagine a boom in a TV studio or just do it, it works. One simply needs to understand where to put their weight.
      If one doesn't have a weight or counter weight place one tripod leg forward directly under the camera.

    • @dct124
      @dct124 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Noel Guevara Also the small rig setup isn't perfect, it blocks the battery door my way is far simpler and leaves you access to all your ports, screen, battery door and sd card and it's faster to mount and dismount.

    • @dct124
      @dct124 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Noel Guevara Top Down Tripod, instead of mounting from baseplate, mount from hotshoe. Product photographers use this all the time just not with the hotshoe.

    • @dct124
      @dct124 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Noel Guevara there's been photographers to mount a gorilla pod to the hotshoe then hang a camera from it. One could literally use a chair as a mounting point.

      I havent used the ART lens, but I bought my Z50 with the FTZ adapter so I can use my Sigma 17-50 F2.8. The combination works perfectly. I imagine the 85 F1.4 ART lens would be a great combination as well.

    It does have electronic VR.
    Still with the complaints of the Z 50 flip down screen 🤦‍♂️. With your Z6/Z7, D850, D800, D500, D780, D750 how does the tilt screen function on a Tri-pod? Same EXACT way and it's a better overall design to the Z6/Z7 option.
    Why does it flip down? It flips down for those who don't have, need or want a Tri-pod. It's a Consumer camera.
    $20 bracket solves any Tri-pod complaint for those who don't want the screen obstructed flipped down on a Tri-pod. Fyi it's perfect for in car recording mounted to a window from the hot shoe.
    You should thank Nikon for the Z 50, why? You have content for a video, got a comment on your video, it assisted you in creating content that's controversial which 1, gets people talking and 2, brings you the content creator revenue.

    • @NoelGuevara
      @NoelGuevara  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mate, first off if you watched the video I wasn’t hating on this camera. In fact I’m getting one and have recommended it to so many of my students and colleagues that a lot have bought. Thank the Z50? Dude I love it.
      So I have complaints wih the screen. I will give an opinion on features based on how I assess them. Plus, this review was based on the question if it could be a good wildlife starter camera, and I gave my honest opinion. Especially given that it’s a consumer camera. There is context. Plus, no camera is perfect.
      Ironically this is the first time that I’ve been called out for hating on a Nikon mirrorless camera, considering I’m a Nikon ambassador for the Z7. Glad to know I’m being received the way I intended: honest and transparent. Cheers mate.

    • @dct124
      @dct124 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NoelGuevara 1 didn't call you a hater. 2 regardless how you took what I said, the last part was written, it's the truth. 3 my main focus was on the flip down screen was it not? It functions like 90% of all tilt screens and beyond on modern cameras currently yet I've seen 0 people complain about them (Z6, the fujis, leicas and canon) so no I don't understand the logic behind what people say about it.
      Put a Z6/Z7 or any other camera with a tilt screen on a tripod to record yourself what result do you have? What I saw was someone riding the band wagon of what everyone else has said without a practical comparison yet over 90% of models can't do what it does but it retains what those models do.
      Why I even said anything, b/c Nikon actually does listen to it's ambassadors and social media and consumers. So you wouldn't want to have the flip down screen function on a Z8? That's what I'm getting at. But now that everyone and their mamma complained about that function without practical use in mind chances are we'll get the same tilt screens from the Z6/Z7. I honestly would prefer a stationary screen like on all pro bodies for durability but if they do switch I don't want the functionality of the Z6/Z7 in terms of the how the screen functions.

    • @NoelGuevara
      @NoelGuevara  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dct124 Personally, I'm of the same opinion as you. I would prefer the same--a stationary screen on my camera bodies. I only have use for flip screens when I'm raising the camera high or low down near my waist. But my point with the flip down is that it could, instead, flip to the side or maybe even fully articulated, which is what most manufacturers have been doing. You're right that that would be riding the band wagon, but maybe that is so because it works. Whether you have a tripod or just holding the camera with your bare hands, a side-flipping screen works. It's not that I don't applaud Nikon for it, on the contrary. But having it flip to the side may be better for both practical, real-world uses. The flip screen is very straight forward, no need to reinvent the wheel.

    • @dct124
      @dct124 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NoelGuevara True.
      My only argument their is a project I was going to do with a cousin who at the time owned a modified Z51 C7 Corvette. It burned to the ground from a manufacturer defect unfortunately. With the Z 50 we were going to mount it to his window and windshield by the hot shoe, flip down the screen to self record. The Z 50 allows you to put the camera nearly anywhere especially in tight low corners where the flip out screen would be in the way of the A pillar and the other angle under the rear view mirror a flip out screen doesn't work their either.
      He's since gotten a Zo6 C7 but I returned the Z 50 🤦‍♂️and went back to old faithful D3s.
      So now I'm just waiting on the Z8 b/c he has a kid now so timing is off. Push come to shove we'll get a Z6 and an external recorder.
      Off topic I personally don't understand the logic of TH-cam reviewers. Many going off spec sheets instead of real world usage. Theirs a small handful that do honest practicle test. Ever since the Df got killed off I'm over analytical of what people say. (It was deemed a hipster camera by idiotic TH-camrs tryna make a buck yet was designed for old people who preferred the F3).

    • @NoelGuevara
      @NoelGuevara  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I completely get you on that. I can't stand "lab test" or "spec sheet" reviewers. It's one thing to see the white paper and another to take it out on the field. This is why I tried to always do field tests (which is relatively easier since it's my work). That said, it's been difficult lately because of the pandemic, so my latest video was just an unboxing and first impressions. I had to imagine and simulate using the tripod in the field to get my honest assessment in. Stay safe, mate.

    While using the rear screen, if you want to use a tripod, is simply not possible, you can get around it by using a Smallrig mounting plate, which provides an offset 1/4 x 20 mounting socket and frees up the screen, so it is not an impossible obstacle at all! The early Smallrig plates blocked the battery door, bit really, how hard is it to take the plate off? If that is your worst problem, you haven't really lived!

    Just buy a rig. I can’t believe how much negative reviews the Nikon Z50 is having for that tilt down screen. It’s definitely better than that idiotic flip side hinged screen which I find totally useless for PHOTOGRAPHERS. The Nikon Z50 is a mini powerhouse. Period. If someone doesn’t get it I’m sorry for them.

    • @NoelGuevara
      @NoelGuevara  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re absolutely right of course. A flip side hinged screen IS almost completely useless for photographers, but Nikon also marketed the Z50 for vlogging with the screen as the hihlighted feature. It is in this context that we are critical of the flip down screen. Otherwise, it really doesn’t matter to me who doesn’t use it for vlogging. And yes, it is a powerhouse!
      That said, Smallrig’s plate for this solves it completely at a reasonable cost.
