I bought one of these over a month ago with both new lenses. I also have a Z 7. I love this camera. I used it at Thanksgiving and Christmas family events on both stills and video. It is so easy to use I have now switched to using the Z 50 instead of my iPhone 11 Pro all the time. This camera has super ergonomics and holding and using it is just so much better than a big full frame with big full frame glass or a phone with no grip. This new body performs excellently. The focus is very good for both video and stills. In AFF mode it just kept my 11 month old grand daughter in focus hand held in mid to lower indoor light with the 16-50mm 4K 24. I thought the standard profile looks great and don't care about more advanced picture settings. And I was pretty amazed at how well this camera compensated in that video for bright back lighting automatically. I have taken it out several times shooting landscape with both the 16-50 and 50-250. My results were excellent. The image stabilization with these lenses is great. And for lower light shots this camera puts out very good raw files. When I need higher resolution I can use my Z 7. But I want to emphasize that unless you are a pixel peeper the 20 mega pixels of the Z 50 is plenty. And this sensor seems to make the most of it's pixels. I want to disagree with you on one of your points. I had a Nikon D5500. It was my favorite digital camera until I bought and used the Z 50. The D5500 had a flippy screen. I liked the flippy screen, but unless you are a vlogger the up down like on the Z 50 and Z 7 are better than the ones that flip out to the side and around like the D5500, in my opinion. For close in video where you have to get low to the ground I love the flip up screen. Flip out, not so much. Finally, this Nikon works really well with Lightroom. Better than the Sony A7iii or Sony HX99 that I have had until a month ago. And the Nikon Z 50 jpegs right out of camera are, in my opinion, a level up from the Sonys I just had and the Nikon D750 & D5500 I sold 14 months ago. Perhaps Nikon has improved the way the D5500 and D750 output jpegs, but I only have my files from 14+ months ago to compare. And this improvement goes to the raws too from both the Z 50 and the Z 7. I am getting really good raw files from the get go by using the Nikon raw files with Lightroom Classic. I have upped my raws to full size 14 bit so that may be part of it. The Sony raw files when using uncompressed were so big I stopped using them and went with compressed. The Nikons can give you full 14 bit at a reasonable size so I go with those. Nice video by the way. Please talk a little bit more about shooting and not always gear, even though I liked this gear video.
Agree with you, I also had a D5500 and the flip out screen is not as practical and easy to use than the flip down-up like the D7500 I have now. This is another of the trend comments from youtubers.
Hello I am thinking to get either this with the two lenses kit or z6ii with 24 70. Do you think that the differenses between those two don't deserve the 1200 price diff? Thank you in advance man.
It's getting harder and harder to find a positive review on youtube on any Nikon camera in this past 2 years. Seemed fashionable to bad mouth them recently. Thanks Ted for the bucking the trend.
@@jaegerschtulmann Agreed. It looks like all the "TH-camrs" that have actually put hands on and a little time shooting the Z50 like it a lot. It appears to be the best thing Nikon has done for the business in quite a while.
I own quite a bits of Nikon glass and 3 of their SLR's but its hard to support them when they bring out a camera like this. Its clearly meant to compete with the micro 4/3's that quite a few people are using for video but its missing IBIS making it not a competitor at all. You can tell Nikon aren't taking the camera seriously too because the SD card is in the battery draw very annoying and something only done on low end cameras, the pop up flash is manually opened to save them money. The flip down screen is useless when the main time you would use it is on a tripod and you cant. Then to top it all off its got the sensor thats starting to age out of D500 (I own) which should have been a 24MP like D7200 which I also own and gets better shots. They went in the right direction with Z6 and Z7 image quality wise they are great but lets face it focus wise and the like they are only about as good as the MKII A7 from Sony. I hope they can catch up next time I really do and they stop using the XQD cards that are basically dead in the water. Sony made them and they don't even use them themselves.
@@LaveaFirmis In my opinion everything you have said in your reply is inaccurate. 1. Nikon made the Z 50 as an upgrade to their DSLR DX business. I used to own a D5500 which I loved. And the Z 50 is the next step to modernize it for better video, EVF, and take Z glass. It is not meant to compete with micro 4/3, it competes with the Canon, Sony, and Fuji crop sensor cameras. 2. None of it's competitors have IBIS except one of the more expensive Sony bodies. Both of the new lenses designed for this camera have VR, and do not need IBIS. This is the same as DSLR DX cameras. Some of the DX DSLR lenses have VR but none of the bodies do. 3. I don't take the SD card out of my Z 50 most of the time. I plug the camera directly into the computer or wirelessly download files. And even when I do take the card out it is no issue where it is stored. 4. I am glad the pop up flash is manually operated, I prefer that instead of it popping up when I don't want to use it. 5. I totally disagree with you about the flip back screen. The way it is is the best way to mount it unless you are a vlogger, and I am not. My D5500 had a flippy out screen, I like the one in the Z 50 better. 5. I have owned both the 24 mega pixel sensor like in the D7200 and now the Z 50 21 mega pixel sensor. The D500 - Z 50 sensor is newer than the old 24 mega pixel one. The Z 50 is better in high ISO than the older 24mp. From my personal experience both the Nikon 21 and 24 mega pixel sensors are good. You are also wrong about the auto focus in the Z 7. I owned a Sony A7iii up to six weeks ago. For my style of shooting I prefer the Z 7 or Z 50 auto focus to the Sony.A7iii. I do a lot of macro shooting and the Nikon offer pin point auto focus which I really like. All three of these cameras have eye auto focus and to me they all work well. I have used A Sony A7ii a while back. It has much inferior auto focus to the Z 50, Z7, or A7iii. XQD cards are much faster than SD cards. I like XQD cards on larger mega pixel cameras like the Z 7. I have no idea why Sony does not use them. Likely for the same reason they don't put a full function touch screen on any of their cameras.
@@RobertNuttmann Its all just opinion at the end of the day. I just feel the Z50 was close to being a better camera that could have cornered part of the market for Nikon after some missteps and taking too long really to go mirrorless and gained back some ground. I'd like Nikon to do well even if its just to force Sony to put a useable menu on their camera. Fair points I agree with quite a bit of that just a few things though. 1. The Z50 is the camera to replace crop sensor DSLR's but at that price point its not enticing people who would be interested in things like the D5600. I guess for me all the 'weaknesses' of the camera like the ones mentioned in the video would be fine if it wasn't as expensive its not far off but it is off. 2. Fair fewer of the competitors have IS in camera than I thought but super lazy look the Panasonic G90 at the same ish price does. But I think they should have more of a road map for native IS glass for it. At the moment the higher end faster glass has no IS at longer focal lengths. 3. Its not the taking card out at the end of the day for me, its if you have it on a gimbal or tripod you cant change cards without wasting quite a bit of time taking it off the camera and rebalancing after. It used to drive me insane when I had the Canon 500D then when I got the D7000 etc the issue went away. 4. Fair enough with the flash I guess like the card thing its just how you use the camera, I found it easier to have an electronic pop up because I didn't have to move as far to open it so it was quicker for me. 5. Again I guess use case but I use the D500 screen for low down shots near mud (example) that the Z50 cant help with and using it on tripod having it flip all the way down it no help at all like the D500. But if went out to the side like D5500 then it would useful for vlogger's, I cant see why they didn't do that I'm not sure when down is better than to the side but again preference. 6. Most of the stuff I do is low light and D500's low pixel count shows up noise far quicker than the D7200 when I tried them back to back. Then after I did that I thought I have to be wrong but if you look at the DXO even just pure numbers the D500's sensor is actually worse than the D7200 and D7500 sadly. I'm glad for the better focusing system though but I miss having the little extra crop 24 gives to tidy up when shooting fast. Maybe they had to put in a sensor from 2016 because they don't make there own sensors 'shrugs'. I found when I borrowed a Z6 I couldn't get it focus as well as my A7 MKiii for fast motion paced stuff so I had to go back to the D500 and A7 MK iii for different situations. The A7 I found could hold an eye better than the Z6 but wildlife I preferred to use the D500, plus the extra reach. I have heard (don't know if its true) the Z50 focuses better than the Z6 and Z7 I guess if it does its because they have learnt lessons from them and its newer. As far as XQD goes my issues are they are way too expensive and harder to get, even on 10FPS burst on both my cameras I never shoot long enough to fill the buffer using SD (I've never met someone who does come to think of it that doesn't spray and pray) and if I can shoot S-Log 4K to SD like I do then speed is no benefit either. All XQD's benefits don't seem to out way the £130 for 64GB very £60 for an SD. I 100% agree with you on the touch screen thing, the implementation on the touch screen on the A7 and D500 is awful but the A7 is worse.
I've got a Z50. I've shot weddings, 20 photoshoots, low lighting, motion.... It does great. You get more bang for your buck that most if not all cameras. Nikon did excellent here. My upgrade will be the 7 II when it drops in price.
I received this little gem for Christmas as a little brother to my D7100...I didn't know if I was being fooled or not when I personally thought that it was a great little machine..you have verified that I made the right decision..I listen to both you and Ken Wheeler for honest opinions, and if Ken does not absolutely hate something, it's a good thing..Thanks Ted for putting my mind at ease for picking this over the competitors !
I love mine! I use the FTZ adapter and the 85mm F1.8 (FF lens) and the images are superb! So far, the FTZ behaves just like my D500 or the D850. Fast auto focus with all the lenses I tried. I'm not into video, so I don't really care for that, but stills, this became the camera I use daily now. Compact, sharp. Had to purchase a second battery - as usual with mirrorless.
Have this camera for a month, the AF is amazing both stills and video. Paired this with Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2, it works great. The eye AF works well on stills and the Auto Focus is very smooth on video. Stabilization on Tamron G2 is amazing as well.
I have a Sony A7R2 and a Canon 5DM III. I bought this camera for my wife yesterday at Best Buy and I can tell you I am impressed. My wife loves it so far. She plans to take a lot of pictures for our Greece, Italy and France trip with it. Great video!
Sony made more quality APS-C lenses in half a year then Nikon did for their DSLR line in 15 years. Nikon will sell you this camera and FORCE you to buy their huge and very expensive full frame lenses.
@@elvirredzepovic6898 Well, the Z50 already has 16-250 mm covered in lightweight kit zooms. They aren't forcing anybody LOL. There are 28mm and 40mm compact primes also coming. I hope they are FF
Ordered one after watching your video. It’s nice to hear an unbiased not paid for review. I have two z6 bodies and absolutely love them. I’ve shot with Nikon DSLRs for 10 years and the transition was extremely easy. These cameras don’t get the credit they deserve.
Do you shoot video Peter. It seems a golden opportunity for Nikon to put IBIS in such a large mount with a smaller sensor. It could have made the Z50 have a USP in a very crowded market.
Non of my Nikon cameras or lenses have IBIS or VR but I'm still capable to take steady shots. Also having VR or IBIS doesn't necessarily mean that you will take great images, in fact the less tech-fluff you have, the more you have to use your imagination and skills.
Lots of the Nikon DX and some of the FX lenses do have VR. I have used the Z 50 with standard 16-50 and the stabilization in this camera is fine for 4k of my grandkids.
Hi, very nice review, I bought the Z50 myself and I am really impressed by its perfect ergonomics both in handling and in menus and its wide range of features, it really is a jewel, and leagues ahead of Canon's EOS M50 that I first considered buying instead (and would have bitterly regretted buying, I am glad I carefully made comparative research between these 2 cameras before deciding!!!). Anyway, just one little inaccurracy at 2:50 in your video: you mention the sensor is a BSI type whereas it really is a FSI sensor. Not that it matters this much on this sensor that already has an impressive dynamic range due to its 'lower-than-average' resolution (compared to competitors') and its lack of low-pass filter, but a BSI type would still deliver better sensitivity and probably better, lower base ISO. Now, everyone seems to give a lot of importance to IBIS, which I find a bit overrated since any type of stabilization won't be of any help anyway if you don't have a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the subject in any situation other than still landscape with no wind or macro, both scenarios where you might use a tripod anyway... And to me, lens stabilisation is more than enough, and many generations of photographers did away with this just fine before it existed as we all know or experienced ourselves... Conversely, what I think is actually more of a sore point is the lack of a self-cleaning sensor mechanism like on the Z6 or Z7... Granted, this kind of mechanism isn't perfect, it still generally proves quite efficient in getting rid of static dust particles (but won't of course be able to remove greasy dust). And lastly, the Z lens range has been really poor after more than 2 years, especially with these mere 2 kit lenses that make the full of the available DX range! Granted there is a 18-140 mm DX lens supposed to come in the first half of 2021, but really the offering is much poorer than Canon's, Fuji's, Sony's or Panasonic's... And as to the FTZ adapter I find it really cumbersome, it adds a lot of weight and bulk to the camera, makes it unbalanced and unstable when you lay it on a flat surface, and adds of course about an inch and a half (3.2 cm) to the length of an AF-S lens... My Sigma 18-200 mm lens that was less than 9 cm in length now is about 12 cm long, and about 150g heavier with the FTZ adapter...
I did the 30-day deal at Nikon and I'm in about two weeks and I am loving it! Thinking I might keep it...it is so light, produces great images so what's not to like? Great review!
Great review!! I got my Z50 for Christmas and I'm loving it. The Small Rig plate solves the tripod problem with flipping the screen and the microphone quality is awesome. It sounds better on it's own than with a Rode handgun! Highly recommend it. It's not perfect but I love it and I'm using it more than my Z6 and Z7!
Hi could you tell me how the small rig plate will solves tripod problem with flipped down screen? Because I'd like to buy this camera for vlogging and put on small tripod
Alexander Zheng SmallRig makes a plate that lets you connect the tripod under the battery compartment, as well as on the side of the camera. I haven’t used it yet, but have heard a lot of positive feedback.
Ive just sold my Nikon SLRs and looking to go mirrorless. Maybe Nikon Z6 but the auto focus worries me especially with the reviews with the Sony A7III blitzing it in this field. I see that the Z50 has better auto focus than the Z6!? Im looking to go as light as possible and the Z6 is still reasonably heavy with a good lens on it. Is this the reason you use the Z50 more, because its lighter and more portable? What lens do you use mostly on it? cheers
You beat me to the punch on the inexpensive solution to the flip down screen. Mine does just great with the small rig plate, plus the plate gives you a mount for portrait position. I like my Z50 a lot!
I’ve had mine for a few weeks now and I really can’t believe how good the two kit lenses are (optically, but the VR is great too). Looking at the raw file images at 100% view in Lightroom, the detail and sharpness is outstanding.
Just picked one up and I’m loving it! Definitely surprised at how well my f mount glass adapts without problems. My gear: Z50 D7100 D750 Tamron 45/85/24-70/70-200 Nikon 50g/28g/55-300/16-50 Sigma17-50
@@jehualguno1646 well, as far as AF and image quality its great.... the issue I'm experiencing is when this lens in on my z50 that camera doesn't go into sleep mode so my battery drains quickly. No other lenses i own cause this issue.
@@coastalbay4k Hi brother. The video capabilities of z50 fully inherited from its full frame brother, z6. 4k 30fps no crop! With the in lens ois, its perfect for vlogging.
Thank you for saying good things about this camera. Other YTers keep pushing you onto bigger better cameras and there is no end to it. I’m getting this as a beginner photographer who travels. I think it will be ideal.
I have this Z50 camera with the FTZ adapter & the Tamron 18-400mm zoom which has its own vibration reduction - solving one of the issues with this camera (be sure the lens has 2.0 firmware to work on this camera). About $1,400 all in for a one lens solution that gives a superzoom up to 640mm with the DX crop. Great travel and exploration kit I can have with me on my bike. Kit lenses are compact and work OK, but the Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 and this Tamron offer better optics and work very well on this camera.
I have been using the Z50 for 6 months now and I like the image results, however, I have one question regarding the sensor. I was unable to find if the sensor is BSI or FSI, and in this review, it was mentioned it is BSI. I contacted Nikon to get an answer and they refused to give me an answer as they said it is proprietary information . this is a non sense as far as I can tell as to why would they hide such information any suggestions?
I too would like the side flipping rear screen, but not for selfies, its so that I can rotate the screen around with the backside facing out where it'll then be protected from scratches and nose smudges.
@@mayankbaunthiyal The AF overall is not better than the z6, but it detects faces and eyes better. But I'm guessing Nikon is working on the software and we will see more updates to both cameras.
@@alifashrareza I have used mine shooting straight into the sun. I get great sunrays and no ghosting or flares, which I have gotten on every other Nikon camera/lens combination that I've used.
I'm thinking about buying a Z50 since my old D7000 is really, really awful for video. This seems to be a hefty upgrade in that regard, and I can use all of my old lenses perfectly with it with the FTZ adapter.
Only issue I've ever had with the flip out screens is people and things hit it especially in crowds. I used to use a Canon G3, G4, G6, G11 and while it didn't happen often it was annoying to have it hit someone or something. I don't personally even know if I'll use the flip down screen beyond overhead shots at events in crowds. The A1000 uses a flip down screen but since it was a compact no one cared enough to complain for clicks if you know what I mean. It's an option but if you don't need it, you'll notice that the waist level orientation is faster to deploy than many cameras. The complaints while valid is funny since most photographers and videographers pretty much use LCD screens flat, or waist level with no complaints. Add something different and people lose their minds. Flip out screens are #1 in my book. Flip down is #2. Flip up is #3.
That's a type-B micro connector for USB, not type-A. At least it isn't the dumb, nonstandard one Nikon used on older cameras. I'm really disappointed that it isn't a type-C connector, which also applies to Sony's new APS-C lineup. At this point, that's a requirement for any new device I purchase.
I'm thinking of getting a z50 ,I've heard the shutter can be used in silent mode for Wildlife ? I use a D500,but the shutter is just too noisy for Mammals at close range, and not really any quieter on low continuous,IL keep the D500 for BIFs ,and maybe the Z50. With FTZ adapter on my 200- 500 might be better for Mountain Hares,Red Foxes. What do you think regarding the shutters quiet mode on the Z50,regards Bri.
Many thanks for a fair and informative review. I have the Z50 two-lens kit and am having great fun with it. The lenses are fantastic. I haven't done any A-B comparisons with my Fuji kit zooms, but I strongly suspect the Nikon newcomers are sharper. Occasionally when I'm zoomed fully in (i.e. 50 or 250mm) the AF freezes and I have to adjust the zoom ring before it responds. That's been my only issue to date, and it's not common. I don't share your frustration with the EVF, which is fine for my use, but I do get EVF envy when I try out my brother's Panasonic G9, for example. BTW, I don't consider myself a beginner, but I do value portability, which is why my enthusiast bodies (e.g. D7100 and X-T2) often get left at home.
You cannot move the AF point with your thumb on the screen, when watching in the EVF. It was something I hated on my Z6, but at least it had a joystick. This one does not have the touchpad function too, MINUS the joystick.
Great video, I got mine a year ago... I cannot get enough of this little camera. I am new on photography and no better way to enjoy it with a Nikon Z50.
I've never understood how my D5600 has such an amazing fully articulating touch screen but models released after it do not. I love that screen, incredibly useful to help get shots. It really can't add that much to the cost if an entry level DSLR has it, or am I wrong?
Just subscribed. Thank you. You are one of the few praising the Z50. May i ask if you think this is a camera that can do wedding work? Been with Nikon for 18 years and planning to switch to lighter systems like the Fuji. However, the ergonomics of tbe Z50 and PRICE plus my familiarity with the system has me on the fence. Planning to get primes mostly. Looking forward to your thoughts on this. Thanks again from a new subscriber .
Same question. I have 4 lenses for my D90 and I am not ready to spend anymore than I have to. So I'm also thinking of the 16-55mm & ftz adapter... And that ftz adapter costs as much as a lens!!!
I photographed a windmill in Copenhagen at dusk recently. I liked the composition because the windmill was framed by trees, which were bare of leaves due to Winter. Anyway, I used the photo as wallpaper on my PC screen but now the windmill is irrelevant - all I keep focussing on is how many tiny twigs on the trees I can see, despite it being a handheld shot at high ISO. The IQ of the Z50 is stunning.
No way! This is the DMA! I have a shot of the building at 6:40 (I cannot remember what it's called) that's almost exactly the same but it's from when it was under construction with scaffolding surrounding it. That's super weird!
For starters, good job on the video. FocusGear is slow and didn't have one thing for z50 or z7ii, so I wouldn't use it. I have a Z50 and really like it. It's really good in low lighting with very high ISO settings. The buttons are positioned in ergonomically locations. Overall, you can use it to take professional pictures.
6:22 Mine arrives today and I'm anxious to try the new Z mount APS-C lenses also. I have the Z7 (for over a year now) and I LOVE it. Can't wait to start shooting with the Z50 and have a really small camera as an option for when I don't want to carry the Z7 with 24-70. The Z50 with that tiny 16-50 will be great. I'll report back on my Z50 later but I'm sure it will impress me as it has you :-)
Would you consider this a viable upgrade from a d3400 or more of a sidestep? I have a d3400 that recently got water damaged so I'm saving for a new camera(aps-c because I have a few lenses already) and am torn between this and the d7500, or just saving even more for the d500. What are your thoughts?
The focus tends to shift. How can I make the focus always in the centre of the screen. It is so annoying when the focus changes. I want the red square to ALWAYS be in the centre. I have missed out on birds in flight because of this drifting. Can you help.
My carry around camera, I use d750 and its heavy. Love this little gem, great in my hand, easy to use, loving how it works in low light, sharp and colours are great. Super review.
Hi I have a D750 was looking at the Z50 as a small camera to go on a gimbal or for jobs when I travel or don't want to be noticed. Question - how do you move focus point round on it - is it joy stick only.
I picked up my z50 a month ago. So far I'm happy with it. But it would be great if it could handle VR in camera. Also not a fan of the flip screen. Even though I don't do vlog. I would be nice if the back screen would flip out like the canon cameras.
Great review. Very thorough. Unfortunately the only thing slightly interesting about this camera is the sensor and processor. I guess you could say it’s good for Nikons first go at a dx mirrorless. I have to say I would rather have this than canons m6 with no built in evf.
I'll wait for a d500 z camera with ibis. I'll never buy a camera without ibis again. It is a treat and extremely useful for my shooting style. Once you have it, you don't want to live without it. Nice review by the way, but I miss more photo/video examples taken by you with the product and maybe some editing showing the dynamic range, etc...
I just ordered one! Planning to use the $$thousands$$ I have in FMount glass with the adapter- I wish you would have added a bit of discussion about the adapter! Great review- thank you
Solid presentation of the z50. Just a quick question , if i take this camera and take an ftz adapter will the mount be able ti hold the heavier lenses like sigma 17-50 f2.8 on a tripod or is it going to break in half or something?
Nice review. How do you think it stacks up against the Cannon EOS RP and the Sony A6400 (Especially for video)? Those are both in a similar price point. Looking for a camera to replace my camcorder for YT videos and thought it might be time to switch to something that can do great stills and great video.
Hi, for the first time I'm going to buy a camera. I'm confused between Nikon Z5 and Z50. My usage is not for any professional photography...just for taking some family photos and tour photos. Also, the seller where I'm planning to buy recommends me to buy Canon EOS-RP...which one is better?... Plz give some suggestions to my brothers and sisters...
The screen that flips just vertically is much faster in the typical use when one needs to shoot at a low angle. Canon has also used it like in M5 and M6. They do flip up 180 degrees on cameras that do not have the viewfinder in the center but with the viewfinder down is the only option
Here's your DX cameras and the top 2 are definitely the Z 50 & XT-30 Nikon Z 50 ($860) Fuji XT-30 ($900) Canon M6 MkII ($850) Sony A6400 ($900) Guess what, none of these have IBIS. Which one would you grab if money was no object? I'm taking the Z 50 overall. If you want better low light Z 50 If you want better video, XT-30 If you want better res., M6 MkII If you want better trash A6400
I got this camera on eBay for a great price. I really like it! It’s got to be my favourite! It’s small and has a good grip and the menu is relatively easy to follow, unlike the Sony menu! I’m looking forward to getting a few nice Z prime lenses.
Thanks for the review. I’ve been looking into the z50 to replace my D5100. I wanted something lighter, something that had the WiFi so I can just send my pictures to my Mac. I’m doing the trade in next week and getting the 2 lens that come with it.
My z50 locked up on me as I was scrolling through my pictures. Nikon said this is not normal, so I sent it back for a replacement. The replacement camera did the same thing. All I did was press the playback button and it froze up. I’m pretty sure I didn’t do anything wrong. Have you had this problem?
Great video! The z50 quality has looked awesome in every shot I’ve seen in video or photos but that flip down screen is just...🤦🏽♀️ lol But it will be interesting to see what other APS-C cameras they release next.
Just think about all mirrorless cameras with a articulating screen. In actual use this is the best screen. Omit the flip down portion from your mind and it literally functions better than any current camera. The flip down is a bonus if you want to use it, otherwise be a professional and add an external monitor.
@@DianaGladney So if the screen didn't fully articulate down what would your opinion of it be? if you don't use it, it's literally just like any other camera on the market except the hinge happens to work better and faster. I compare it to the X-T3, XT30, a6600, etc. Now the a5000 is the best way to flip up, but the screen is in the way or obscured by a microphone, light, external battery, cage, etc. There's no perfect system.
@@DianaGladney Diana I have used flip up on both Nikon bodies a lot, but cannot remember using flip down. I sometimes hold or have it on a tripod and flip the back screen up a little when shooting children and I am down low too or flowers when shooting waist high. I did also use the flippy screen when shooting flowers too, and it worked fine. The flippy back screen when shooting grand kids low did not work very well though. Just my shooting style.
Nikon made good job with this little bad**s, really like it. And I am just bit interested, what about Flat-profile, would it help with procesing video? Like does it close to N-log?
Nice review...
Nice review, I also had a d5500 and just purchased the Z50 and love it! The photos are great.
@@jaegerschtulmann You mean like the D850?
Z7 II is amazing I had it for a few weeks and still taking pictures
I’d like Sony to have a good look at this camera.
There are many things the Sonys still do better but the ergonomics of the Nikon is very appealing.
Sony made more quality APS-C lenses in half a year then Nikon did for their DSLR line in 15 years. Nikon will sell you this camera and FORCE you to buy their huge and very expensive full frame lenses.
@@elvirredzepovic6898 I'm not sure how that relates to ergonomics but OK.
@@elvirredzepovic6898 Owning an APS-C with FF lenses is not an issue.
@@elvirredzepovic6898 Well, the Z50 already has 16-250 mm covered in lightweight kit zooms. They aren't forcing anybody LOL. There are 28mm and 40mm compact primes also coming. I hope they are FF
I bought a Sony 6400, worst camera I've ever had. Got rid and bought the Z50, great camera.
Ordered one after watching your video. It’s nice to hear an unbiased not paid for review. I have two z6 bodies and absolutely love them. I’ve shot with Nikon DSLRs for 10 years and the transition was extremely easy. These cameras don’t get the credit they deserve.
All Nikkor prime lens have never had VR and Nikon has never had in body stabilization until Z6, Z7. How did I survive for the past 50 years?
Your symes experience is not my own
Do you shoot video Peter. It seems a golden opportunity for Nikon to put IBIS in such a large mount with a smaller sensor.
It could have made the Z50 have a USP in a very crowded market.
Awesome answer uncle
Marco Antonio Regil yes ditto , it’s my first choice to pick up .

I just got this as a backup to my z6, I love the z50 it is so fun to use.
James Ryan hey man how about the flaring and ghosting on z50?

i am thinking of buying Z50 but some reviews said that its not compatible to IOS?any thought about it before buying this camera?
I use the flip up on the Z 50 when I get down on the floor to video my 11 month old grand daughter.
What camera you using to record this cause it’s clear af 😭
Yes, I agree, the autofocus is very good!
I haven't touched my D810 since I bought the Z50 :)
Did you not try the flat profile for video. I find it to be great - really easy to work with.
D7100 and X-T2) often get left at home.
at 5:05 you mean there is the battery and the memory card or it has usb-c connection?
You cannot move the AF point with your thumb on the screen, when watching in the EVF. It was something I hated on my Z6, but at least it had a joystick. This one does not have the touchpad function too, MINUS the joystick.
I own z50. Really great camera to use.
FUN! And screen flip down is heaven for vloggers
you don't use tripods or gimbals bro?
Great video, I got mine a year ago... I cannot get enough of this little camera. I am new on photography and no better way to enjoy it with a Nikon Z50.

I've never understood how my D5600 has such an amazing fully articulating touch screen but models released after it do not. I love that screen, incredibly useful to help get shots. It really can't add that much to the cost if an entry level DSLR has it, or am I wrong?
My d5100 has it, too. Awesome feature.

How's the 4k video compared to the Z6?
If the Z 50 is the only camera that you had, would you use it to do paid work, is it good enough?
For travel and family occasions, do you recommend the SonyA6400 kit or the Z50?
do you think that it is okay to buy the camera body only with the FTZ adapter. So that I can use my old DRLR lenses on it?
I appreciate these videos man, have a good one!
How is the auto-focus on the Nikon compared to the Sony Alpha series like the 6000 or 6100 ?
Thinking about this camera to replace my 1AW that has served me well., Just a light camera for travel snaps.
Is it too much to ask for an APS-C camera with 2 Sd slots?
I know, I'd even take two micro-sd slots. Huge miss on the usb 3.0 as well!
I also wish they made the video unlimited instead of

Thank you for posting/making it.
I’m buying the camera 😊
My carry around camera, I use d750 and its heavy. Love this little gem, great in my hand, easy to use, loving how it works in low light, sharp and colours are great. Super review.
Hi I have a D750 was looking at the Z50 as a small camera to go on a gimbal or for jobs when I travel or don't want to be noticed.
Question - how do you move focus point round on it - is it joy stick only.
Is there a crop in 4k?
I picked up my z50 a month ago. So far I'm happy with it. But it would be great if it could handle VR in camera. Also not a fan of the flip screen.
Even though I don't do vlog. I would be nice if the back screen would flip out like the canon cameras.
@@raymondtan2415 True. It's just when I have the camera on a tripod I can't flip the screen.
@@MrBruinsfan77 But the screen does flip up...
Great review. Very thorough. Unfortunately the only thing slightly interesting about this camera is the sensor and processor. I guess you could say it’s good for Nikons first go at a dx mirrorless. I have to say I would rather have this than canons m6 with no built in evf.
Is this good for astrophotography? What telescopic lens do you recommended?
Regarding the EVF, have you tried the Leica CL?
I purchased the kit lenses for my z7 and it performed amazingly! The best kit lenses to date!
Been thinking of this, I love using my DX lenses on my 7, have you any footage shot on them uploaded?
Hi, at the same price point of z50 which is the best latest camera for photography??
Late to the game of mirrorless cameras but thank you once again!!
canon m6 mk ii or nikon z50 ?? for Photography Please reply
Can you compare the older Panasonic Lumix G85 and the newer Nikon Z50 for video?
Saw the Will Rogers Memorial Tower and instantly knew where you were! I grew up in Fort Worth. Enjoyed your insights in the video. Just subscribed. :)
Did I also see the Amon Carter Museum in there as well?
The screen that flips just vertically is much faster in the typical use when one needs to shoot at a low angle. Canon has also used it like in M5 and M6. They do flip up 180 degrees on cameras that do not have the viewfinder in the center but with the viewfinder down is the only option
Here's your DX cameras and the top 2 are definitely the Z 50 & XT-30
Nikon Z 50 ($860)
Fuji XT-30 ($900)
Canon M6 MkII ($850)
Sony A6400 ($900)
Guess what, none of these have IBIS. Which one would you grab if money was no object?
I'm taking the Z 50 overall.
If you want better low light Z 50
If you want better video, XT-30
If you want better res., M6 MkII
If you want better trash A6400
It is strange if you have to use ff lenses for aps-c size sensor. Where is that portability?!
The Z50 has 2 DX Z mount lenses.
Have you had this problem?
solid video. I bought the camera as a kit and as a beginner/ intermediate, this camera suited my budget. love it.
Great video! The z50 quality has looked awesome in every shot I’ve seen in video or photos but that flip down screen is just...🤦🏽♀️ lol But it will be interesting to see what other APS-C cameras they release next.
I disagree. I had a Nikon D5500 with a flippy screen. I much prefer the flip down and flip up of the Z 50.
Just think about all mirrorless cameras with a articulating screen. In actual use this is the best screen. Omit the flip down portion from your mind and it literally functions better than any current camera. The flip down is a bonus if you want to use it, otherwise be a professional and add an external monitor.
That’s cool, whatever works for you but the flip down is a poor choice in my opinion. It’s weird but some will like it, I just don’t.
@@DianaGladney
So if the screen didn't fully articulate down what would your opinion of it be?
if you don't use it, it's literally just like any other camera on the market except the hinge happens to work better and faster.
I want a16-50mm like that for my Fuji! The manual collapsible design looks awesome
Nikon made good job with this little bad**s, really like it.
And I am just bit interested, what about Flat-profile, would it help with procesing video? Like does it close to N-log?
I enjoy this tutorial. Please allow me to ask: How to get Z50 continues powered while in use (for video streaming)? Thank you.
Can we use 18-140mm nikon lens with this
Great! Thanks.
The Nikon Z50 does have a flat picture profile and a neutral picture profile which you could use to film and then colour grade
So am I able to use any z lens with out the adapter or will I need this adapter?
Canon 200D or Nikon Z50 for filmmaking???
Nikon also had the flip out screen for the D5300. I wish they had the same for the newer models
