That's nice that you love teaching enough to do it in your spare time. And, I know that I, and others, appreciate all the helpful lessons you've done. Thanks, Alphonso!
I know this 7 years ago but I recently tumbled upon your vid and i really love it. In return I purchased two of your books. I have not read them yet but I am sure they are great. Like I said, I love your vids and this is my way of thanking you and supporting you in return. Thanks much.
whenever I need good advice I turn to your videos and actually I always find the right answers! Thank you so much! Of course I bought your book! It´s one of my most used art-book.
Thanks again for another great tutorial. I really appreciate that you take time to provide us with very detailed instructions, yet broad enough so that we can experiment using your techniques. I can't wait until your book comes out, and I'll be watching for the Kick Start announcement when you get to that point. I have to tell you that I had an early Christmas when I saw that you were going to be one of this year's Strathmore's instructors. Can't wait for that either! Thank-you again for all the tutorials you share, and have a wonderful, safe and Happy Holidays!
Felinda Bullock Thank you so much! it means alot to me to know I have the support. And i'm glad you've found them useful. I think the greatest inspiration for me is hearing how much the videos help you guys. Thanks again
Hello Alphonso, you're very talented and inspire me very much as an artist and I admire you. I'm 16 years old and love art very much, however lately I have been going under stress such as school and I've been starting to fade away from drawing. I desperately want to master drawing and become an artist I the future but for some reason every time I pick up the pencil I just start drawing badly and feel like I can no longer draw. I don't know if this has to do with an artist block but I desperately want to get my passion for art again nd don't know what to do and need some advice :c
Aluan mota hello dear , I had the same problem but since I started reading a book named " The Artist Way, a spritual path to higher creativity " I'm really progressing and find my inside artist. I hope you find it helpful ;)
No one could've put it in a better way! Thanks for commenting. I wish he sees this cuz I have the same problem. Exams and shit kind of made me loose my interest in drawing a little bit.
Glad to see you coming back, looking forward for the other videos & book. Thanks for doing what you do. I have a question, how can you create the rounded graphite lead . I'm sure there was a video about it, hmm.
Thanks Alphonso Dunn. What sort of exercises do you do to practice lines. You are a very good teacher. I look forward to buying your books. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
In this tutorial you showed how to create texture with graphite and charcoal. My favorite medium is graphite and charcoal. As you said graphite and charcoal do smudge easily, but I like the kind of effects I get when I use graphite and charcoal. So you teach chemistry. I hope you and your family will have a very Merry Christmas and a very prosperous New Year. ...on earth as it is in Heaven (Mat.6:10). Thank you Alphonso for your basic drawing fundamentals.
cynthia story thanks so much! that means alot, and yes I agree graphite and charcoal are really cool drawing media. The smudging is really the least of worries given the pros
Hey there Alphonso! I have a question ( unrelated from the theme of this video though.)which I hope you can answer. I find this sort of program online for beginners, which says that one should learn perspective first ( 1-2-3point) and then move on to anatomy/figure drawing. I find this great, since my goal is to write my stories and illustrate them, and for the past 2 months I've been messing around with perspective. But I'm not sure if I should stick JUST to perspective until I'm good at it, or doing other stuff too simultaneosly. ( like shading the cube I just drew in perspective or having days when I'm focusing on perspective, and other days when I'm studying anatomy) So my question is that, when you started learning how to draw, did you focus on one specific area and then move on to the other, or you did more things simultaneosly? ( sorry if my question is too long, and I know that it's really hard to create this sort of balance when someone is learning to draw, but i feel really overwhelmed, thats why the long comment..:D) Thank you!
mindfucks5000 no i didnt stick to one particular thing, but I were to do it all over again, there are certain things I think would be best to address early, like measurement, shading, mass, just the basics. and have projects to apply them :-)
Just discovered your books and videos. I bought all the books for my high school art classroom. It makes so much sense that you are also a high school teacher. great job! I really love your 'common mistakes in cross hatching' video and plan to use it with my students. Any plans for more "common mistakes" videos?
i know this might be a stupid question but can i sharpen charcoal pencil with normal pencil sharpener? cuz i heard from other artist that they make their pencil exposed alot cuz its easier to draw on a big scale. Im used to drawing with graphite pencil and its my first time using charcoal.
dandey I wouldnt advise you sharpen charccoal pencils with a normal pencil sharpener. I wouldn't even recommend you sharpen your graphite pencils with a normal pencil sharpener. I have a video on sharpening pencils in the Drawing Fundamentals Playlists
***** I don't know. I tried to make it look like wood but then I ruined it with the paper stump. On the left I tried stones and wood. I don't use charcoal very often and I still need some practice.
oh ok...still looks cool...just try to restrain yourself when using charcoal, it can quickly get out of control but its also erasable so take advantage of that
Raihaana Azmi Yea as luisdiazart says..You can use virtually anything with a really soft texture to blend, a piece of tissue, napkin, cloth, just dont use your fingers as tempting as it is.In this video I used a paper stump...not a tortillon, tortillons are similar but a little harder so they dont blend as smoothly. they are both made of paper but on is made from the pulp and other from paper wound up into a pointed roll. They have their unique uses...I will discuss them at some point. Hope this helped :-)
Dear Alphonso, Happy Holidays! I love your channel and learn so much from it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I really love art and aspire to be an artist by learning from virtuosos like you. I want to order your book, but I don't have enough money. I can only afford to buy one book right now. Please suggest which one I should buy. Thank you😊🌹🌷
This was a really good tutorial, i really like your work. i'm defiantly buying your book. I have one question, do you have any advice or systems that can help learn anatomy faster and better?
Michael Ferrara I shared an approach I use..it helped me a lot otherwise try to UNDERSTAND how the body is designed and works first first, it makes remember much much easier. Heres a start th-cam.com/video/_VVU1mCwYiY/w-d-xo.html
Hey! Another great tutorial, i will have to keep practicing as i get hooked and then i move on to other styles which is annoying! i will have to try and be grounded with what i create or attempt to create only i never complete any pictures, hopefully i will one day! thank you ! ☺
Here's the best solution for your time. Crappy students get a C. Fair students get B. The rest get an A. Do about 3 tests, this will tell you all you need to know. Plus if here's a problem change the grade. Ok now that that problem is solved back to the drawing! :-)
I think you could work on the top parts (lightest) a little more, they do not look realistic at all (especialy this bumpy charcoal cube): I would have rendered every "rock" as a different sphere - add highligts and shadows. But still thanks for posting a new video, waiting for a new one

What fortune to find such a teacher in this life!
Wow you teach chemistry in HS? To devote all this time to make videos even though you have a job ... you must really love art!

Some people just take intrinsic pleasure in spreading knowledge. It's one of the noblest qualities us wretched homo sapiens have.:-)

Thank you for taking time to make these tutorials despite your busy schedule!
I'm going to try to watch every tutorial you've from your channel until the end of the year to see where this gets me.
