this is probably one of the most important art videos people need to see. it will save everyone loads of time. its funny, i think what really keeps people from becoming artists are these stupid myths we're all raised to believe that hold us back from truly expressing ourselves. we feel like we need to overperform and get everything perfect rather than focus on conveying a message in our art.
***** keep up the good work. are there any other myths that i should get rid of in my head. i know another one is that some youtube videos showing a photorealistic celebrity drawwing might actually be a transfer or a light trace before the artist fills in the blanks. that make people feel rly low about themselves that they can't draw photorealistically even though they probably can if they practice and they should stop thinking that its just something most artists are born with (otherwise why are there so many youtube videos like that). I know i have put myself down because i saw other peoples work and felt i wasnt good enough, but i think this guy names sketchytrav said not everything is what it seems.
Practice reveals the magic. A child looking at an adult riding a bike without training wheels will always be in awe until they realize they can do it too (after practicing enough, that is) And remember, everyone's journey is different

It's easy to grow up drawing and have your own style, but if you don't adapt the principles of nature/light, your artwork can lack a little and maybe not reach their full potential! Thanks! This is good advice, IMO especially for rendering natural stuff like trees, leaves, grass, wood & rocks. When i was a beginner i used to do so much texture that pen was really slow so I hated using the medium

Also, if you want to get good at shading, go and try and roughly cope some old anime works from Gainax or the likes, especially Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's style, because it's very simplistic and there's not that much flair or anything and it can be done to look as it should with a traditional medium. I've noticed that especially the shading on the clothing, the solid shapes, are something that if you can't get it right, you can't shade anything at all and make it look right in any style. It's all really just value, sharpness of the edge and contrast to me. I think the reason most people tend to over-render is to hide up the simple shadow part that looks bad, because it was essentially just scribbled in due to no practice. Because that cross hatched, rendered shadow was scribbled in, it's probably placed a bit weird too on round forms and the like, but you can "not get caught" if you over render it, but it will still look bad and take time. tl;dr Best way to practice shading is to look at real life, then a good example of how it's done then try to find that point via simple steps. For me it was essentially just shading cubes and stuff in different ways and essentially copying Sadamoto Yoshiyuki's shading to get some ideas for clothing shading. One thing I now pay attention to due to copying him is backlighting, most his pieces have backlighting on the clothing. It's just simply leaving some part on the silhouette uncolored or a lower value, but everyone forgets it. Copying is good if it's productive and you don't make any money.

When it comes to actual artistic talent, in some cases it's god given.... for most of us mere mortals any 'talent' is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration! Hard work is what gets you over the line!

@@alphonsodunn I do agree that you need to repeat yourself to teach people anything. From what I hear, it's adequate if you tell people what you are about to teach them, you teach the thing, and then you tell them what you just taught them again. Not that I'm a teacher myself.
