Thanks Alphonso. I'm 62 and just learning how to express shapes and images with a pencil. You are helping me tremendously and I appreciate all you do on TH-cam.
Very well explained. Wish any drawing teacher had put it this clearly. Like you say its all stuff you kinda know but when you always put it in practice your works reflect it and it frees you up to imagine greater..
Dear Alphonso, your tutorials are the most useful and informative I have found on youtube simply because you rightly assume that your audience is likely not to have the most basic knowledge on how to draw ... it's Sunday morning and I am sick in bed watching your tutorials and sketching following your instructions and I can see an improvement already. Thank you so much for giving your time to share the joy.
I love that you said "recreate reality in simple ways". It makes art so much more accessible and less intimidating to enjoy fully when you don't have a ton of experience. Thanks for this!
Providing the clear explanation, coupled with the simple diagram, and finally the demonstration that put it all into action (all within about ten minutes) really helps. Thanks! :-)
I wanted to say thanks for your clear demonstration. I drew the initial image, and now I am adding to it. I have an other cliff on the right side of the image, with a valley below full of rectangular rocks that have fallen off these cliffs. Thanks again.
I want to hug this video; it’s so helpful! Thank you. (It was so enjoyable to watch you conjure these rocks out of nothing. I could watch hours of it. Relaxing and instructive.)
Wow! I just applied these concepts to a drawing of one of my houseplants and realized a misconception I've had for years. I thought if something was in the background it should be darker than the foreground but I was just creating contrast in the background that was flattening everything out. Not sure where I got that idea but now I see the difference. Thanks! you rock...
I just noticed this video was uploaded 9 years. My prof used your video as a guideline to complete this drawing assignment and I got a 90 cause of you. Thank you and it was my first sketch. I hope all is well with you brother
I loved this because I learned that you don't always have to go for the most detailed drawings, because I saw you take scribbles and put some more of those tips into it and you mad the artwork look so good!
Most of these I already knew but the contrast is one that I am weak in. Seeing how you did your contrast made it more appealing for me to try. Thanks a lot! I love how you showed them all together too. Eager to see what else you have. :)
I’m not the best or even what people would call good at drawing but this video gives me a good sense of ways to utilize depth. Thanks so much for this vid
You have done a lot of good karma by teaching us art, and believe me your good karma is multiplying every second, you teach basic first that's the most amazing thing
1-3 and 6 were pretty obvious, but 4 and 5 kind of blew my mind. I mean I knew all of them subconsciously, but I never really stopped and really thought about it. Thank you for this!
Generally, those that can do and those that can't teach. You are a wonderful exception, as you do both well. It's obvious you love teaching and you excel at it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Best Regards, RJ.
Very helpful and impressive. Rushing hatching and cross hatching -- Oh, yes, I definitely have that problem! So impressive the way you turned a few lines into rocks -- and made me believe they were rocks. Of the many excellent skills you have there is one that feel compelled to comment on -- how carefully you choose your words and how precisely you speak and convey your ideas. I appreciate that so much.
Most amazing tutorial. Precise and comprehensive.. I went through tonn of videos to understand and you put it all in 5 mins. A fabulous teacher you are your student's must be very lucky.
I've watched many drawing tutorials right from proko,Art of wei, mark riley etc.But your videos is one among the best very basic and fundamentally detailed , so helpful for beginners like my son.Keep posting many more tips. Thanks you..
Rocks are my nemesis and always have been, But with your tutorials I am going to try to draw them. Thanks for the simple and clear instructions in all your vids
i have to say that many of these tutorials help both with realistic drawings and sketches as well as cartoon/anime-esque backgrounds and shading as well.
I just started drawing again and the tip on the background line by itself was invaluable. thanks so much. I'm definitely checking out your other videos.
I'm an artist as well and Pen and Ink is my favorite medium to do and your videos are just great,, because you actually break it down very thorough,, which is refreshing...because half the tutorials on here are Timelaspe and no voice or sound which to me is stupid because if anyone wants to learn anything you have to pause at the precise moment,, I've learned some great little tidbits and also have brushed up on some of my skills
Your videos are the best in the drawing and sketching category I can find. I can't get enough, I subscribed about two weeks ago and must have watched like 100 videos already lol. I'm sure I'm over exaggerating a little, but yeah I love these videos and you explain it all so well that it makes it a lot easier to follow along than most other videos about drawing. I have improved so much watch your videos, so I must thank you Sir you are an inspiration.
Hey Alphonso, This is the 3rd of your vids that I've watched and I'm very grateful for you doing them and sharing with us. You have an easy teaching style man which fully helps. Thanks!!
We did have art lessons in school and also did drawings and watercolour paintings in class. But I can not remember our teacher having explained things so clearly and simple as you do. I think with those few simple observations/tricks taught in school many more people would keep doing art as grown-ups. Many people stop to do art very early because they are convinced the results are not good enough. And in many schools art is not taken as seriously as math or languages. Shame, really. I do love science and especially physics, but this is only half of me. The other half is nature, art, philosophy, animals... Art is what makes us human, isn't it? Although I knew most of the hints you gave here I really enjoyed the clearly structured, understandable and "optical" lesson.
This man is still replying to comments! Still helping people even on his old videos.
A true TH-cam legend
Thanks Alphonso. I'm 62 and just learning how to express shapes and images with a pencil. You are helping me tremendously and I appreciate all you do on TH-cam.

I wanted to say thanks for your clear demonstration. I drew the initial image, and now I am adding to it. I have an other cliff on the right side of the image, with a valley below full of rectangular rocks that have fallen off these cliffs. Thanks again.

This is super straight forward. So much in so little time. Thank you. This will improve my work drastically.
