Saw Grace sing Amneris live in Pittsburgh. Fabulous amazing low and middle- the high B flats were tiny and pinched- almost inaudible. This was later in her career. But what a presence- and I will never forget her Carmen with Vickers. Crazy good! Better Mezzo than Soprano. The best Amneris ever- even better than Zajick. She had the temperment and HUGE voice to do this role. I love Grace!!
You are too young to realize what a true Verdi Mezzo should sound like..so much darker and dramatic. Try finding Ebe Stignani, or Fedora Barberi, for example, and see what you're missing.
@@photo161 ::: You have a point about mezzo-sopranos having darker voices, but Bumbry makes up for the lack of really dark chest-tones with her great volume and majestic sounds. Her voice is also more beautiful than the mezzos you mentioned.
Bumbry and Verrett are 2 completely different performers. To me Bumbry had a higher range for the chest register in her hey-day than Verrett. Both are awesome but for me, Verrett has more earth-shattering power in the voice. Her top and low notes are also stronger. I have heard Bumbry struggle more with her upper register but she has a more beautiful tone within her comfortable range. It's pure subjectivism- BOTH make me weak in the knees!
They are both spectacular singers - Bumbry possibly is a bit more versatile, but the beauty of Verretts voice is almost impossible to beat. The topnotes of Verrett are amazing - so round and strong and with a shimmering that is hard to explain. As Amneris and Dalila Verrett is outstanding....
I agree with bomeulen...Grace is absolutely the best Amneris ever! I love her. However, only really love her in Opera. I don't care for her that much in lieder. She sings with so much passion in Opera, but it doesn't sound that way when she sings lieder. I know it's not the same...but it kind of is. Anyone agree?
Yeah, I was surprised they left that mistake in the recording with L. Price. She does the same thing on that studio recording, but not on the one with Nilsson and Corelli.
Agreed, the best Amneris ever. But, I heard her sing Lady Macbeth In Philadelphia. Wonderful temperament for the role Sleeping scene was problematic with the ending pianissimo, but that is the case with many sopranos as well. But, after working with Dame Judith Anderson, her portrayal was right on....very memorable.
Pour moi une immense Amneris!! Elle joue une jeune fille amoureuse sensible et desespéréeet une princesse autaine et dure comme souvent ! Sceniquement elle est remarquable. Et vocalement parfaite!! Vive Bumbry
She shows great artistry here, and with her long silhouette, long arms, great hands and her face with the shape of a heart, we see a real princess, not a...sorceress or a bull with a crown. Sometimes her low notes are a bit clear, but she is comfortable in any notes of the role, with this particular déploration line written in the medium, with which the orchestra competes.
Thank you. The thing about Bumbry is no one has ever sounded like her or will again. In that way she IS like Callas and Price and Sutherland, who had sounds no one else could reproduce. Verrett, who I love, had better technique and maybe more notes, but unless she was in her wheelhouse she could sound like anyone. Witness her bland Desdemona. You always know when Bumbry is singing.
I saw this actual performance. Stunning beyond belief!!
This is a true mezzo voice.

I agree 100 % , nobody sang Amneris like la Bumbry!!
What a beautiful voice
Воистину Воскресе наш Христос! Спасибо вам, очень важная тема!
8.11. Can you imagine being that chorus member and having Bumbry lay hands on you while she sings? I'd die. DIE.
I just love it Brava Diva

You see the way she plays up the cape? You can’t teach that shit.
The picture quality is wretched but it's lovely to have this document of Bumbry in fine voice. Thanks for posting it!

I don't agree. The Verrett voice is unique and unmistakable.
