I LOVE her voice!!!! I LOVE her passion! I LOVE this woman!! What a gift it is to be that great. If I could only be so lucky to come close to being this good, you couldn't tell me anything. I understand everyone wants to be a critic but you must admit, she is by far one of the best opera singers you will ever come across.
Funnily enough, I recently bought (well, it was free) the first record of Tebaldi/Del Monaco recording of Aida, and then when I played it, the programme from this performance of Aida fell out of the sleeve. This is from the Royal Opera House, Friday 8 October 1971. Radames was the great English tenor Charles Craig, Aida was Mina Krilovici, the King was Gwynne Howell, Ramfis was Joseph Rouleau and John Shaw was Amonasro.
I love seeing videos of Shirley Verrett. The level of her intensity cannot be conveyed by her marvelous voice alone. Watch the magnificent play of emotions on her face as the men's offstage chorus pronounces the judgement.
Verrett was brilliant in everything she did! She and Bumbry were the BEST in this role. Both were brilliant in their performances but in different ways. Verrett acted the role better than Bumbry, and had an intensity in her singing that was pure fire and revelatory. Bumbry was pure drama, superficial in actions but the voice was huge, full of expression, and powerful, cutting and crystal clear like a bell. Both sang this role to perfection with Simionato a close third in my opinion.
Aida who? LOLOL! I would not want to have been in the same production as La Verrett as Amneris without all my vocal and acting business correct, because you might just get your feelings hurt at curtain call. Peel the paint of the walls! Burn down the barn! EXTRAORDINARY!!!!!
You're right! I really don't like Aida... All she does is cry and beg for mercy. She hasn't got personality... I love Amneris instead, and specially THIS Amneris 🥰
@@esterbruno8604 I also love Amneris, but Aida, never forget, is an exiled. She was bereft of her Land and her crown, of her father and her people. She loves, but loves an enemy who she has to betray leaving him in the shame and the punishment of being a traitor. And so far on she comes back to die with him... She's a great character, no doubt on that.
@@alessandrocotroneo3188 Actually, that's true. She's in a really bad situation, and she's divided between two heavy conflicts... And I like her also musically. But still, she forgets she's a princess too... She could do many more things that those she actually does. Maybe because of her conflicts, but she acts weakly, she acts like a slave too, and not like the Ethiopian princess.
@@esterbruno8604 I'm sorry: no polemics, but that's not the Aida I can feel Verdi created. I really know how sometimes we hate charachters for some reasons, but, if it will happen, please come back here when you'll realize what splendid heroine she is. PS Now I may be a little polemic, but she acts way more princely (as she dies) then Amneris, that for jealousy condemns her beloved. PPS I LOVE AMNERIS
Unfortunately Shirley’s over acting is mostly straight out of the 19th c However in opera it’s the voice that counts and here she is unbeatable. I saw/heard her twice and in both instances I was in awe of her vocal perfection.
Verrett was a superstar but she was not so superb as the glorious Fiorenza Cossotto in Verdi.La Cossottina had a register that coverd alto, mezzo , and soprano.Verrett and Bumbry was more of mezzosopranos.Cossotto,Verrett and Bumbry superstars forever.
Best of the best! Voice, emotion, precision, and a great stage control!
Absolute perfection! Her singing, her acting, her musicianship, her voice, everything about her!!! BRAVA!
The most convincing Amneris ever.
The most beautiful Amneris ever.
The unique, unrivalled Amneris.
This is god made music.
Stupenda voce, interpretazione sublime, grande, grandissima Verret
Shirley Verrett thank you for your amazing and incredible art. Eternally thank you. Brava ❤
Not only was she a fabulous singer but also an exceptionally convincing actress, not a common combination on the opera stage.
She is truly fabulous eh! Very sophisticated, passionate, outstanding voice in everyway! Huge in dize as well!
This is a masterclass in chest voice!! Work Shiley!!!!!!
Fabulous operatic acting!! There is a difference and she is simply the best! Goosebumps!!
One of the greatest singing actresses of our time. With one of the most glorious voices.

Настоящее исполнение! Таких певиц, таких голосов сейчас нет! Бесконечное браво!
You know that had to be THRILLING live, because even on film it's just so effective. Brava.
Her singing of Neocle from I`assedio di Corinto is one of greatest examples of Dramatic coloratura singing I have ever heard .
What a magnificent voice, and such a beautiful woman too!
DIVINA!!!
Fearless and FANTASTIC!!!!
Gran interpretación, gloriosa voz , dramatismo maravilloso Shirley Verret una gran cantante. Armando Cerutti - barítono

Miss Verrett, I don’t know what else one could ask for in that scene. Brava!

Perfection. I worship this woman.
Simply wonderful - just like her lady M. I miss Shirley Verrett!

RIP SHIRLEY! SO PERFECT :(
She is the Perfecta Ammeris. I love her voice, technique and the experience she had. So much to learn from her.
She ate this up!!!
I love Shirley. Great rendition of Amneris. Verdi would love it.
Magnifico....davvero...
Лучшая Амнерис всех времён и народов. Волосы дыбом, слёзы ручьем.Вот настоящая сила искусства!
bellissima e bravissima
Powerful, my favorite soprano who can sing mezzo roles with geniality. And vice versa.
Definitivamente la migliore Amneris di sempre! Assieme alla Simionato! 😍
She truly is amazing!
I cried.
Amneris is the most interesting, complex character in Aida. She is fascinating and deserves an interpretation like this.
All of Verdi´s mezzo roles are wonderful.
Magnífica BRILLANTE ❤AMNERIS
BRAVO SHIRLEY. !!!
che intensità che voce sublime

Impresionante, divina!!❤❤❤
wow. this is fire.
La plus grande chanteuse avec Maria
This is how it should be done. And now please compare to what singers do today. It´s a whole different and unfortunately sad story.
Goosbumps! damn she's just so frickin briliant. Is there a more fiery singer?

Viva viva Verrett!
holy smokes
THE ULTIMATE AMNERIS…….!!!!!!!
With this Amneris, I don't understand why Radames chooses Aida.

She is or was insurmountable.
She was. She is died in 2010 😥💘
@coopandre Grace Bumbry sang in Aida with Madame Price. There's a funny albeit apocryphal story that goes along with that evening too.
Do tell?
she is a dramatic soprano but her voice is perfect for amneris
She is a Falcon soprano, and she played also the role of Ulrica (contralto...!) in Un Ballo In Maschera! Just incredible 💝😍
@@esterbruno8604 Mas probable una spinto.
She was a Falcon.
F**k, this is so intense

Just look at her stomach... It's some belly dancer stuff going on over there!

Many would disagree. Fact: Verrett and Bumbry both sang many more soprano roles than Cossotto...
