    What sorcery is this from 1973? Who knew they could film this duet seamlessly like this film production back then? It was like Samantha and Serena together at the same time in "Bewitched".....😁

    I saw Bumbry's debut transition performance as Aida in 1973, but the Munich audience booed her.
    I knew less about voices then, but could not understand why she was booed.
    Many years later we did Turandot in Sydney, and miss Bumbry was an excellent Turandot, and didn't stop giggling when offstage.
    What a wonderful woman.

    Bumbry was a "hot" singer. The color of her voice was mezzo, but she had an extension that took her all the way up to a soprano high D. She was also a hell of an actress. Surely one of the great operatic artists of all time. Ditto for Shirley Verrett, who was also a mezzo with a soprano extension. It's unlikely we will ever encounter their like again. Two opera tigers! Very Callas-like on stage.

      Grace was a natural soprano though. Classified as such by her teachers. She just chose to sing mezzo. Same for Verrett. Soprano singing mezzo. Not the other way around.

      @@brunopicaude3092 You're mistaking repertoire choice and natural biological voice type. Lack of technique will also limit your range. Cigna did not have notes above middle E5 when she started.

    Thank you very much for posting this scene . I never knew it existed . It reminds me of Domingo's double role of the Count and Figaro . Bumbry , who has always had a greater instrument than Domingo , is much more believable
    and with greater " color " variation ( s ) .
    [ She looks ravishing in both roles , especially as AIDA . ]

    A great Amneris indeed. I grew up with the recording conducted by a young Zubin Mehta, also starring Nilsson, Corelli, Giaiotti. There has not been as vocally a splendid Aida to be put on disc since then. No, I did not forget the Muti with Caballe, Cossotto, Domingo, etc, as very fine as Caballe is on that one.

    • @DukeofDarkCorners
      @DukeofDarkCorners ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Apparently it was specially made for a TV show. She probably pre-recorded the soundtrack singing both roles, then lip-synched for the camera. The double appearance would have been achieved by filming her alone in two performances (one as Amneris, one as Aida), then combining the shots in which both characters appear using optical printing.

    Ms. Bumbry is definitely a very good Aida; but she's a GREAT Amneris! She stole the scene from herself.

      Emily Greene Nope. Certainly very good as Aïda, but indisputably great as Amneris. In the same league as Stignani, Simionato and Cossotto. They knew how to sing with great power in the lower octave of their voices. Her voice was effortless, gorgeous, and TITANIC in this role at the Met.

      Apte dictum, Thaddeaus! Поддержу вас и Джеффри. Грейс справляется с Аидой, но намного более интересна как Амнерис: голос звучит интереснее и богаче у Бамбри-меццо-сопрано, пусть даже партия Амнерис достаточно высока по тесситуре. Признаюсь, впрочем, что тех, кто слышал в партии Амнерис в Большом театре Образцову, едва ли в той же мере (не говорю - большей!) способна восхитить любая другая певица. Это была лучшая партия Елены Васильевны.

      E' vero, come Amneris è magnifica e unica, come Aida più convenzionale e meno interessante.

    Come italiano posso apprezzare i più piccoli particolari di questo Capolavoro assoluto di Verdi. Egli esigeva la "parola scenica", pur sempre sottolineata da armonie sorprendenti, a volte dolcissime, altre trascinanti come uragano! Questo duetto ne è un esempio: la finta amicizia di Amneris si tramuta presto in furore, mentre Aida resta nel pianto, dopo il crudele trucco della "possente rivale"! In questo un po' artificioso video, in cui Grace Bumbry canta entrambi i ruoli, l'apprezzo molto come Amneris. La sua pronuncia italiana è buona per una lingua madre anglosassone, per esempio migliore di quella della Sutherland. Lei stessa se ne vantava, e pour cause! Le parole si capiscono e il dramma è reale, non solo orchestrale. Accosto questa interpretazione a quella di Fiorenza Cossotto (Amneris insuperata) e Maria Chiara (Aida perfetta in tante recite all'Arena di Verona). È reperibile in TH-cam. Comunque la Bumbry è davvero un'ottima Amneris!
