The thing to take away from this video, is the power savings they are claiming do not appear to be valid. Their equipment doesn't appear to be accurate enough. I would point out that I have been quite conservative in the error. Power is the product of torque and angular speed (cadence), As an example, the speed reading is +/- 1 RPM. If you do that on a cadence of 90RPM, that is already 1% error. That is even before we discuss the torque limitations.
My issues are why would 1 watt make a difference anyone would notice, and why not use a better bearing if they intend to sale the unit at such a substantial cost? I know the saying OZs equal pounds and pounds equal pain, but I seriously doubt the 1 watt of potential energy savings is worth the price tag. Unfortunately someone's going to have to actually use one and report back if they noticed a difference. 🤷🏻♂️
I'm afraid your analysis of their measurements is incorrect. You are confusing the accuracy of the sensor with its resolution. It may only be able to accurately determine torque to say 0.1Nm, but it may have a resolution of 0.001Nm (made up figures). What is important here is the relative measurements between the 2 products.
@@leejohnmitchell I appreciate the resolution might be higher but the torque is lets say +/- 0.1Nm. You cannot be sure that one is reading at the max end the other is at the minimum end. You've got that error on two shafts so it would typically be standard deviation for the two errors to square and root them. Thus the error quoted is conservative. I would also point out that their graph shows Absolute numbers and not relative ones, it's 6W on the 52/11

Then it even gets more complicated as this is quoted at a temperature. The manufacture also quotes the range is bigger at the lower end if I understand the manufacturers sheet correctly (although I can’t see the foot notes)
It's January 2023 right now and this example of a $30.00 part (I'm being generous) being sold for $700.00 is the perfect example of why the cycling industry is in for a VERY rough ride for the next one, two or three years. There's going to be a LOT of fallout and I wonder who's going to survive.
It makes me wistful for days of old, when nights were bold, and grossly overpriced bling derailleur cages and pulleys were made from shiny exotic metal by skilled people with machine tools.

This pulley cage is absolutely a piece of junk. Terrible bearings, nothing ceramic about it, nothing carbon fiber about it nothing but injection molded plastic. The idea that they can charge consumer $700 for something that is inferior to the standard Shimano component is just mind-boggling. You can purchase an entire Ultegra derauiller and cage all for $100..Just a complete rip off.
Yes but you are missing the most important thing, it's oil slick anodised. You clearly need to start doing oil slick BBs, then you could charge the same, maybe drill a few dimples on them too.

This is gold On the one hand we have Shimano with all their cycling experience and solid engineering along with the best bearing manufacturers in the world like NTN with their way of how bearings are engineered, work and made; both with excellent manufacturer tolerances. On the other hand we have AbsoluteBlack that tries to do a combination of both in their own way. I wonder who will come out on top.

@@WeirdNeville it still wouldn't be worth $350 though. You can buy a complete Durace derailleur for $200. I bought a 105 for $65 which is still better than the AB which doesn't look like it could survive 500 miles in grimey conditions.
I put GRX pulleys in my 105 derailleur. It made my drivetrain noticeably quieter and smoother. I only spent 15 bucks for the pulleys. I saw a bike with this Absolute shyte hanger and Ultegra Di2 over the weekend, and the chain dropped. Maybe it had to do with that flexy derailleur hanger. Also, it was a "gravel" bike.

Right so its made out of cleat plastic and a couple of hybrid ceramic bearings with rubber o rings bunged in to stop them rattling which with those tolerances they will once its been used for a while, it has a surface like a teenagers face even though its an aerodynamic mess of a shape sitting in dirty air and their test rig is as accurate as strava's estimated power numbers. Literally the only thing its got going for it is its quirky looks.
Even I can see that this bearing arrangement with its poor seals and loose fit will clog up in one (like this morning’s) wet ride. Then the whole arrangement will either destroy itself or just rotate in the shell making the loose fit rapidly looser. 🙄
@@truantray dimpled/rough surface textures work in the right places, down there its totally pointless especially as the largest area of surface has a massive hole in it. Adding unnecessary leading and trailing edges to something they're implying has beneficial aero properties is a bit dim.
A company in the early 1980s was making bicycle cranks that had a bend in them. The company claimed that the bend in the crank arms made them more efficient at transmitting power. They charged more money for them than regular cranks, but they didn't seem to be crooks and charge an order of magnitude more than the standard versions. There is a logic to charging extremely high prices for products. Ignorant people believe the old saying, "you get what you pay for", and figure that anything that's extremely expensive must be extremely high quality.

Can’t replace metal cage with plastic (carbon fibre filled), although it’s lower in density, but it’s lateral stiffness is too poor oz to oz compared to metal cage. Unless they sacrifice aesthetic for strength using plastic through proper engineering. But AB do not have that design strength, they are a pure marketing bs.

The axial float on the guide pulley would throw off the indexing of the gears every time it slid from one side to the other. I feel for people who have bought this. Flexible, heavier, bigger frontal area, soft bearings and DIY Quadring sealing ( they offer great sealing when used in the right application. But also the highest friction option.)
Shimano derailleurs historically deliberately designed side float specifically into the top jockey wheel in order to allow it to align more closely with the chain coming off the sprocket after the gear shift has competed, correcting for small variations in the gear indexing position. Once the amount the derailleur has to move to change gear is significantly more than the side float in the jockey wheel this is actually an advantage. The Shimano jockey wheels of this design were running on a bushing made from actual ceramic with proper rubber lip seals to keep the dirt out too. The lack of side float in newer 12 speed derailleurs due to Shimano moving to cartridge bearings is, I suspect, part of why my 12 speed shifting is much more prone to noise in certain gears than 10, 9 or 8 speed ever were. The truly depressing thing is that this is likely to be a concession to marketing on the MTB side as SRAM started using cartridge bearings which, with SRAM being being SRAM, seized on exposure to mud unless you cleaned them out completely after riding before the mud set in the bearing, in their jockey wheels. Since every marketing scumbag knows it's an easy sell to market cartridge bearings as an upgrade to bushings, rather than fight this bullshit with the justification for their design choices, Shimano rolled over on the bearing choice and made their product worse. In their defence, at least Shimano seal their jockey wheel cartridge bearings competently, so they run with no maintenance or seizing for thousands of km until the bearing starts wearing into what's effectively a rattly spherical bearing. Older ceramic bush jockey wheels would run maintenance free for considerably longer though - basically until the teeth completely wore off them - and still shift gears perfectly though, so it was a downgrade on durability too. Maybe the friction on cartridge bearings is less, but everything else was better with ceramic bushings.

The slight lateral play in derailleur guide pulleys is there for smooth shifting purposes - I've had Tiagra 4600, 105 5700, and 105 R7000 rear mechs that all have this. Fair play to AB for retaining that in their design, but they messed up everywhere else IMO.

The fact that Absolute Black is trying to censor you or your videos is something within itself. The proof is in the pudding. I love this video. Aesthetically, this product looks cool but id rather have something more functional and pratical.
I can't help but think that if OSPWs were all they're cracked up to be, the big boys (Shimano, SRAM, campy et al) would be specing their own version to their top end groupsets. Seems to me that any friction efficiencies are negated by the extra aero drag and weight (bigger unit and more chain links required). Just bike industry smoke and mirrors.
I swear I read that Shimano prioritizes shift quality over other goals, so they might know that they can eke out some more watts with bigger pulleys, but they won't at the cost of shifting.

I bought a J&L version of that thing that cost $96. I bought it to get a longer arm since it is almost impossible to get a medium arm, and I run a 32 rear for climbing. It operates quite well as a longer arm, but you can't set it up by eye, and it is very sensitive to cable tension (shifting accuracy) but it was $20 cheaper than any Campy medium length arm. So, since it can be aligned and shifted using trial and error, I give it a C grade. But given the cheaper price and the difficulty of finding a stock medium arm that moves it up to a B grade. The larger bottom idler doesn't seem to make any difference.
Tom, How long have you used this “cage”? I have to wonder if the J&L version suffers from the same bearing fit and construction as the one tested. I’m just thinking it wouldn’t last too long. Bearings being loaded eccentrically aside, hat side load issue, with just a little wear, would make indexing a nightmare.
To much to say here in response to this video, but what I will say is; In the past, I held signatory to NATA, which in Australia is the “National Association of Testing Authorities”. This body holds the international standards for Australia and competency is measured by an interview and Quality Control documentation. They specify any NATA report MUST be done as per stringent requirements, relating to specifying errors or corrections of a measured device with results traceable back to international standards. So I know a little about accuracy. There is so many things wrong here and claiming accuracy at these levels, is not as simple as one may seem, and the bicycle industry doesn’t follow any international standards or traceability. So there will be video discussing this coming in the near future.

I love the cycling world and that's why I got to this video. I "knew" this product, sold for the price of a liver, was a burglary. And now you gave me the instruments and datas I wanted. This company should go to the court and not have the license to sell products anymore. They are even doing their dirty work at sun light, reporting datas their own machine cannot even measure. Hi Hambini; compliments! I was surprised you did not mention the miniscule size of the balls in the bearings. These will cut grooves in the races right from the first pedal stroke.
I take it that thanks to the sloppy manufacturing, the jockey wheels will keep spinning after the bearings seize up. That's some excellent engineering.
For $700 I would have expected it to come in a fancy jewel box instead of the PC low-impact packaging, but I guess that would cut too much into their profits.

Well it certainly looks cool, and as we all know looking cool makes you faster. Just like racing stripes. For $700 I'd expect it to be cncd titanium or carbon. Not only is this injection moulded, they didn't bother to line up the injection ports with the aero dimples to disguise them. Jeez
If they'd done what the metallurgically ignorant are trying to call "forged carbon" they could still have produced a carbon fibre cage, and it'd be high quality, and lighter than titanium. I really like titanium. Sometimes I even machine bits of it in my home machine shop, and I absolutely loathe the thought of cutting a full depth thread in the stuff without CNC thread milling, because I actually like my thread taps and pay for them myself. I rebuilt some cheapie toe-clip pedals for someone because it was funny, and decided to include some 8mm diameter Ti 6AL bar in the build, because that's funny too. After breaking a 5mm Expressflute spiral tap I just cheated and drilled the holes out to a bit over 4mm. This gave minimal thread depth, but it was appropriate for the application as it wasn't really load bearing.
the high narrow-wide profile on the lower pulley is probably to retain the chain. they probably dropped chains constantly during testing due to exessive flex in the cage. also the bearing races could be made of impregnated UHMW. (did it smell like candle wax when burning? then it´s likely UHMW)

As a naive amateur cyclist, I am starting to think that there is something amiss in the entire cycling industry. Every year new products are introduced that the respective manufactures claim are at least 20% more aero, 20% more compliant, 20% stiffer than the previous offering. I am starting to think that there just may be a bit of dishonesty going on. How can this be when we are asked to invest $5000 and more in a new bike? I am starting to get a bit skeptical.
to "lie without lying" you just compare your product in everything you have with last year one, and then pick the few things that has the bigger numbers, 20% stiffer, means it's 20% stiffer from something that already was as stiff as hambini's balls, then that 20% means nothing, it changes nothing. inflating numbers by comparing them to things that has no reference is at this point, part of the cycling industry
There's no contradiction in your setup. Claiming more stiffness, compliance, and less aero losses says nothing about cost. The contradiction is that despite claimed 20% year on year improcements, today's bikes aren't that much stiffer, more compliant, or aerodynamic than bikes 10 years ago. This is basically a result of UCI limits on mainstream bike design.

In the process of getting the chain back on (they had no chain breaker with them), they ended up breaking the retainer as well. If I remember correctly, AB hunted down their when they made a comment on a forum post elsewhere and tried to smear them online.

Great choice of pencil. I've got the same. Its fantastic for maths. A true patrician. Regarding the error bars repeated runs can shrink the error bars of random error by root n-1 so hypothetically they might be accurate. But back in the real world I'd not consider it accurate either way, it seems like the equipment is likely to have significant systematic error which repeated runs can't eliminate ruining that theory anyway. Given the deceptive (but not completely lying) nature of what I'm seeing I'd assume that's what they did. However the moment they start picking individual runs to look good the data is all garbage which I also assume they did. Outside of my field, could the bearing be plastic with only ceramic rolling elements? I'd assume they haven't thrown ceramic filler into the races, but they could get away with pretending to have some ceramic there whilst making cheap garbage?
Precision vs accuracy. What you're talking about is effectively oversampling, which is great at removing random noise. But put it this way, if they sold a 10cm ruler that was only 99% as long as it should be (1% full scale error), regardless of how many times you measure something you're not going to get the "true" measurement.
@@fgbhrl4907 Right, that's pretty much what I said. The analogy wasn't great because it simply doesn't fit here but random error vs systematic error was a point we both made. Repeat readings are an essential part of a physics, which is my background, hence why it jumped to mind for me. It might be less common in other fields but it answers every question we had of their data. I wasn't arguing that it was a valid way to drop the error bars by 95%, indeed I argued the opposite, but its a good answer towards how they are making such claims.
@@olivialambert4124 Gotcha. I've got an engineering background -- and oversampling is something that's done all the time when measuring things with an ADC. You effectively increase your resolution -- sample something enough, and your 8 bit ADC (0-255) can become a 16 bit ADC (65535 levels). Of course, there's always the tradeoff of time required / how much your measurement is changing in that window.
Read Ed C.Capen's papers from 1975 and 1976 which demonstrate how humans greatly underestimate uncertainty ranges - and that's even without motivational biases related to cooperate gains that exist with AB!

It may only be able to accurately determine torque to say 0.1Nm, but it may have a resolution of 0.001Nm (made up figures). What is important here is the relative measurements between the 2 products.
@@leejohnmitchell I appreciate the resolution might be higher but the torque is lets say +/- 0.1Nm. You cannot be sure that one is reading at the max end the other is at the minimum end. You've got that error on two shafts so it would typically be standard deviation for the two errors to square and root them. Thus the error quoted is conservative.
I would also point out that their graph shows Absolute numbers and not relative ones, it's 6W on the 52/11

The reality is we do not know the accuracy figures of the sensors.
Those figures quoted are a range the company warrants the device to be within, not it’s error, or correction, therefore we have no basis to start from nor does Absolute black. Then it even gets more complicated as this is quoted at a temperature. The manufacture also quotes the range is bigger at the lower end if I understand the manufacturers sheet correctly (although I can’t see the foot notes)
It's January 2023 right now and this example of a $30.00 part (I'm being generous) being sold for $700.00 is the perfect example of why the cycling industry is in for a VERY rough ride for the next one, two or three years. There's going to be a LOT of fallout and I wonder who's going to survive.

This pulley cage is absolutely a piece of junk. Terrible bearings, nothing ceramic about it, nothing carbon fiber about it nothing but injection molded plastic. The idea that they can charge consumer $700 for something that is inferior to the standard Shimano component is just mind-boggling. You can purchase an entire Ultegra derauiller and cage all for $100..Just a complete rip off.

@@WeirdNeville it still wouldn't be worth $350 though. You can buy a complete Durace derailleur for $200. I bought a 105 for $65 which is still better than the AB which doesn't look like it could survive 500 miles in grimey conditions.
I put GRX pulleys in my 105 derailleur. It made my drivetrain noticeably quieter and smoother. I only spent 15 bucks for the pulleys. I saw a bike with this Absolute shyte hanger and Ultegra Di2 over the weekend, and the chain dropped. Maybe it had to do with that flexy derailleur hanger. Also, it was a "gravel" bike.

Right so its made out of cleat plastic and a couple of hybrid ceramic bearings with rubber o rings bunged in to stop them rattling which with those tolerances they will once its been used for a while, it has a surface like a teenagers face even though its an aerodynamic mess of a shape sitting in dirty air and their test rig is as accurate as strava's estimated power numbers. Literally the only thing its got going for it is its quirky looks.
Even I can see that this bearing arrangement with its poor seals and loose fit will clog up in one (like this morning’s) wet ride. Then the whole arrangement will either destroy itself or just rotate in the shell making the loose fit rapidly looser. 🙄

A company in the early 1980s was making bicycle cranks that had a bend in them. The company claimed that the bend in the crank arms made them more efficient at transmitting power.
They charged more money for them than regular cranks, but they didn't seem to be crooks and charge an order of magnitude more than the standard versions.
There is a logic to charging extremely high prices for products. Ignorant people believe the old saying, "you get what you pay for", and figure that anything that's extremely expensive must be extremely high quality.

Your analysis is once again impeccable like in most of your videos and your bb are well designed. But ego and vanity will always override excellent engineering logic. More expensive, and more convoluted advertising will always win. My daily motto is “it is never a day wasted when you can annoy someone”. But you are the master! You annoy manufacturers with skill, wit and logic. My engineering hat off to you.
The axial float on the guide pulley would throw off the indexing of the gears every time it slid from one side to the other. I feel for people who have bought this. Flexible, heavier, bigger frontal area, soft bearings and DIY Quadring sealing ( they offer great sealing when used in the right application. But also the highest friction option.)
Shimano derailleurs historically deliberately designed side float specifically into the top jockey wheel in order to allow it to align more closely with the chain coming off the sprocket after the gear shift has competed, correcting for small variations in the gear indexing position. Once the amount the derailleur has to move to change gear is significantly more than the side float in the jockey wheel this is actually an advantage. The Shimano jockey wheels of this design were running on a bushing made from actual ceramic with proper rubber lip seals to keep the dirt out too.
The lack of side float in newer 12 speed derailleurs due to Shimano moving to cartridge bearings is, I suspect, part of why my 12 speed shifting is much more prone to noise in certain gears than 10, 9 or 8 speed ever were. The truly depressing thing is that this is likely to be a concession to marketing on the MTB side as SRAM started using cartridge bearings which, with SRAM being being SRAM, seized on exposure to mud unless you cleaned them out completely after riding before the mud set in the bearing, in their jockey wheels.
Since every marketing scumbag knows it's an easy sell to market cartridge bearings as an upgrade to bushings, rather than fight this bullshit with the justification for their design choices, Shimano rolled over on the bearing choice and made their product worse. In their defence, at least Shimano seal their jockey wheel cartridge bearings competently, so they run with no maintenance or seizing for thousands of km until the bearing starts wearing into what's effectively a rattly spherical bearing. Older ceramic bush jockey wheels would run maintenance free for considerably longer though - basically until the teeth completely wore off them - and still shift gears perfectly though, so it was a downgrade on durability too. Maybe the friction on cartridge bearings is less, but everything else was better with ceramic bushings.
@@peglor agreed mate, I was going to say the same thing. The slight lateral play in derailleur guide pulleys is there for smooth shifting purposes - I've had Tiagra 4600, 105 5700, and 105 R7000 rear mechs that all have this. Fair play to AB for retaining that in their design, but they messed up everywhere else IMO.
Well spotted that man. It looks like a quadring, which is basically used as a double lipseal. I use them on low speed gearbox outputs.
The OSPW might be heavier, but think of how light your wallet will be.

The fact that Absolute Black is trying to censor you or your videos is something within itself. The proof is in the pudding. I love this video. Aesthetically, this product looks cool but id rather have something more functional and pratical.
I can't help but think that if OSPWs were all they're cracked up to be, the big boys (Shimano, SRAM, campy et al) would be specing their own version to their top end groupsets. Seems to me that any friction efficiencies are negated by the extra aero drag and weight (bigger unit and more chain links required). Just bike industry smoke and mirrors.
I swear I read that Shimano prioritizes shift quality over other goals, so they might know that they can eke out some more watts with bigger pulleys, but they won't at the cost of shifting.

I bought a J&L version of that thing that cost $96. I bought it to get a longer arm since it is almost impossible to get a medium arm, and I run a 32 rear for climbing. It operates quite well as a longer arm, but you can't set it up by eye, and it is very sensitive to cable tension (shifting accuracy) but it was $20 cheaper than any Campy medium length arm. So, since it can be aligned and shifted using trial and error, I give it a C grade. But given the cheaper price and the difficulty of finding a stock medium arm that moves it up to a B grade. The larger bottom idler doesn't seem to make any difference.
Tom, How long have you used this “cage”? I have to wonder if the J&L version suffers from the same bearing fit and construction as the one tested. I’m just thinking it wouldn’t last too long. Bearings being loaded eccentrically aside, hat side load issue, with just a little wear, would make indexing a nightmare.
To much to say here in response to this video, but what I will say is;
In the past, I held signatory to NATA, which in Australia is the “National Association of Testing Authorities”. This body holds the international standards for Australia and competency is measured by an interview and Quality Control documentation. They specify any NATA report MUST be done as per stringent requirements, relating to specifying errors or corrections of a measured device with results traceable back to international standards.
So I know a little about accuracy.
There is so many things wrong here and claiming accuracy at these levels, is not as simple as one may seem, and the bicycle industry doesn’t follow any international standards or traceability.
So there will be video discussing this coming in the near future.

Hi Hambini; compliments! I was surprised you did not mention the miniscule size of the balls in the bearings. These will cut grooves in the races right from the first pedal stroke.
I take it that thanks to the sloppy manufacturing, the jockey wheels will keep spinning after the bearings seize up. That's some excellent engineering.

For $700 I'd expect it to be cncd titanium or carbon. Not only is this injection moulded, they didn't bother to line up the injection ports with the aero dimples to disguise them. Jeez
If they'd done what the metallurgically ignorant are trying to call "forged carbon" they could still have produced a carbon fibre cage, and it'd be high quality, and lighter than titanium.
I really like titanium. Sometimes I even machine bits of it in my home machine shop, and I absolutely loathe the thought of cutting a full depth thread in the stuff without CNC thread milling, because I actually like my thread taps and pay for them myself.
I rebuilt some cheapie toe-clip pedals for someone because it was funny, and decided to include some 8mm diameter Ti 6AL bar in the build, because that's funny too. After breaking a 5mm Expressflute spiral tap I just cheated and drilled the holes out to a bit over 4mm. This gave minimal thread depth, but it was appropriate for the application as it wasn't really load bearing.

@haitchteeceeeightnineeight5571 were you cutting a M5 metric coarse thread? If so your tapping drill should be 4.2mm
the high narrow-wide profile on the lower pulley is probably to retain the chain. they probably dropped chains constantly during testing due to exessive flex in the cage.
also the bearing races could be made of impregnated UHMW. (did it smell like candle wax when burning? then it´s likely UHMW)
This product reminds me of the wankery found in the audiophile world. And like so many of those products, a little basic metrology shoots holes in their claims like fish in a barrel. Nice work Hambini!

As a naive amateur cyclist, I am starting to think that there is something amiss in the entire cycling industry. Every year new products are introduced that the respective manufactures claim are at least 20% more aero, 20% more compliant, 20% stiffer than the previous offering. I am starting to think that there just may be a bit of dishonesty going on. How can this be when we are asked to invest $5000 and more in a new bike? I am starting to get a bit skeptical.
to "lie without lying" you just compare your product in everything you have with last year one, and then pick the few things that has the bigger numbers, 20% stiffer, means it's 20% stiffer from something that already was as stiff as hambini's balls, then that 20% means nothing, it changes nothing.

There's no contradiction in your setup. Claiming more stiffness, compliance, and less aero losses says nothing about cost.
The contradiction is that despite claimed 20% year on year improcements, today's bikes aren't that much stiffer, more compliant, or aerodynamic than bikes 10 years ago. This is basically a result of UCI limits on mainstream bike design.

Nah, they're to stop the chain literally falling off. One sided design, innit. That's why the big wheel has narrow/wide teeth, too.

In the process of getting the chain back on (they had no chain breaker with them), they ended up breaking the retainer as well. If I remember correctly, AB hunted down their when they made a comment on a forum post elsewhere and tried to smear them online.

Regarding the error bars repeated runs can shrink the error bars of random error by root n-1 so hypothetically they might be accurate. But back in the real world I'd not consider it accurate either way, it seems like the equipment is likely to have significant systematic error which repeated runs can't eliminate ruining that theory anyway. Given the deceptive (but not completely lying) nature of what I'm seeing I'd assume that's what they did. However the moment they start picking individual runs to look good the data is all garbage which I also assume they did.
Outside of my field, could the bearing be plastic with only ceramic rolling elements? I'd assume they haven't thrown ceramic filler into the races, but they could get away with pretending to have some ceramic there whilst making cheap garbage?
Precision vs accuracy. What you're talking about is effectively oversampling, which is great at removing random noise. But put it this way, if they sold a 10cm ruler that was only 99% as long as it should be (1% full scale error), regardless of how many times you measure something you're not going to get the "true" measurement.
@@fgbhrl4907 Right, that's pretty much what I said. The analogy wasn't great because it simply doesn't fit here but random error vs systematic error was a point we both made.
Repeat readings are an essential part of a physics, which is my background, hence why it jumped to mind for me. It might be less common in other fields but it answers every question we had of their data. I wasn't arguing that it was a valid way to drop the error bars by 95%, indeed I argued the opposite, but its a good answer towards how they are making such claims.
@@olivialambert4124 Gotcha. I've got an engineering background -- and oversampling is something that's done all the time when measuring things with an ADC. You effectively increase your resolution -- sample something enough, and your 8 bit ADC (0-255) can become a 16 bit ADC (65535 levels). Of course, there's always the tradeoff of time required / how much your measurement is changing in that window.

Read Ed C.Capen's papers from 1975 and 1976 which demonstrate how humans greatly underestimate uncertainty ranges - and that's even without motivational biases related to cooperate gains that exist with AB!
