We Visit The UK's Most Beautiful Town AT CHRISTMAS ☃️

  • Rye in East Sussex, England is often named one of the most beautiful towns in the UK and we have to agree, so when we found out they were holding a Christmas festival we just had to pay it another visit.
Having driven through a winter wonderland of snow to get to Rye, we were already feeling in the festive mood. As we explored some of the sights and quaint streets, including the famous Mermaid Street, we were initially underwhelmed by the festive offering but that was all about to change.
We paid our first ever visit to Lambs House, a National Trust property in the heart of Rye where they were celebrating a 1970's Christmas and it was like stepping back in time. This nostalgic blast from the past really lifted our mood and it just got better from there.
Seeing the horse and carriages making their way through the beautiful town, the various live music performances and the subtle but traditional decorations throughout town would have been enough but we saved the best for last. The annual Christmas Pudding Race on Rye High Street was everything we never know we needed and a truly epic end to Rye's Christmas Festival.
📍Recorded December 2023 in Rye, East Sussex

Happy Holidays, guys, from Rock Hill, SC in the states. I sure enjoyed this vlog. I grew up in the 70's, so this brought so many memories back.

Great video boys. You certainly know how to make an old man feel even older!! When you said that you were not around in the 70s, I thought blimey, that was not that long ago, then I stopped to think, 1970 was over 53 years ago!! Where has all that time gone...

I was in my 20s in the 70s, so all that in the house was familiar to me. Tangerines and coconuts were stocking fillers in the 50s. The bathroom , I used to have an avocado bathroom suite. Decorations, we all made by hand until about 1980. I really enjoyed your National trust video part, baby!! 😂

Rye is a pretty town anytime of year, but Christmas is so magical it makes it special. Never knew about the races, what were they running with???? That bathroom was very green wasn't it? We had an avocado coloured suite in the day of coloured bathrooms. Now we have 2 bathrooms, both just white. Lovely video as ever. Thanks lads.😉😉

When we moved into this house here *points* in 1987- the 70’s theme was evident as the hall was decorated with wallpaper bearing brown, cream and beige triangles and fleur de lis shapes, that had no designated pattern base - it was hideous……and the bathroom indeed bore an avocado coloured suite - sink, bath and toilet with an avocado green carpet on the floor (there are no words to describe the essence of “spilled human excess waste from the male of the specie” from the area around the toilet that wavered in the air when the carpet, quite literally sticking to the floor, was pulled up 😳😵‍💫😱🤢 but that’s not what you asked, sorry! 😄
When I was a child, in the 60’s, living with my parents and two sisters, it was always “my job” to make the Christmas decoration chains, by having to lick one of the sticky ends of a coloured paper rectangles, bought from the Christmas section of Woolworths in Woolwich and link them up. It was not fun, more of a punishment chore. My mum did not like me licking the sticky end so would give me a damp J Cloth to wipe over the glue area, but I just it wet too much making the paper rectangle UNsticky so there would be a pile of soaked and unusable coloured strips sitting on the table and a paper chain with about 4 or 5 completed links…..not quite enough to cross a living room ceiling 😉and my two sisters grumbling because they could not hang them up. I would get bored doing it and sit there sulking licking and sticking, until there were no strips left to chain. The thing is,this pointless decorative exercise was recreated every year - in the vain hope that our house would be a Christmas decorative dream…. Hey ho! 😂
I can remember that we had crepe paper chains that you pulled open and outwards, which would measure about 6foot . They would be strung across the ceiling, having been fixed to the top of the wall with cheap sellotape, but of course the gravity affecting heavy paper chain v cheap sellotape meant that after carefully sticking them up, by the next day the chains would be decorating the living room carpet. My mum would threaten that “if one falls down, it stays down” but they did go back up again!
It was a fun video and lovely to see the Rye town folks having a fun day out. Happy Christmas J&J xx
