You should be releasing on the 14th proc. You do a faster recovery animation that won't get you killed to come and gets you comfortable with ending the ZSD early to avoid damage.

Not only that, u can claw into zsd again immediately after drop because u didn't do the recovery animation and knocked too far from fatalis head (you drop exactly bellow its head).
About damage, I tested it at training area. It only difference about 160-200 damage with full zsd but you knocked too far and have long recovery animation that can't be cancelled. So release the zsd at 13th or 14th is a great choice to quick roll, quick sheath, or maybe u wanna zsd again.
