  • As first year entrants in the NJ Law Fair's Mock Trial program, Folsom School's 6th Grade Talented and Gifted students were given the opportunity of presenting their original case, "Pill Popping Phil", which won 2nd Place in the state, overall.
Since this was their first appearance (hopefully there will be more!), some students were not accustomed to public speaking and as a result, the audio is difficult to understand.
In the case, Philip Swallowitz Jr. is a 4th Grade student who, as a result of his medical diagnosis of ADHD, is prescribed Adderrall, a drug to treat the symptoms, in order to allow Philip to concentrate in his studies. A friend of Philip's sees him take the pill. Becoming concerned for his safety, she tells a teacher about the incident which prompts a search of Philip's bag, revealing an unmarked pill bottle. As a result of school policy, despite the fact that the school is aware of Philip's affliction and his medication, suspended Philip for two days. Philip and his mother are seeking to have the suspension expunged from Philip's school record, as they believe the punishment was too harsh, that the school hadn't the right to search his book bag.
Congratulations, Folsom! You did exceptionally well and we can't wait to see you next year!
