SWFL Eagles ~ Harriet Brings A Cat To Nest! Not A Stuffy! Warning Viewer Discretion Advised 2.15.21

  • Viewer discretion advised - footage may be upsetting to some sensitive viewers.
    Harriet flies in to the nest with roadkill cat (head and foot). She most likely picked it up from the side of the road after the cat had an unfortunate run in with a car and brought it to the nest as prey for the E's. Eagles are opportunistic hunters - nothing is wasted in nature. It may be difficult to see the cat head on the nest and some viewers may want to limit their watching until it is disposed of one way or another. Poor kitty :( Thank you for watching!
    Thank you SWFEC , hosted by Dick Pritchett Real Estate, for allowing us the opportunity to view these amazing eagles.

      😢Im sad for the cat, especially if it was someone’s pet. This why they tell you to keep you cats inside or on a harness and leash just like your dogs. I’ve loved watching this pair raise their chicks. One time they had brought a whole fish to the nest that was still doing so flopping. The eagles need to eat and to feed their young. This all comes back to circle of life and the survival of the fittest. The cat eats the much smaller vermin and lizards who munch on all kinds of insects. And just think eagles and ospreys along with other hunting birds can help to keep down the ever growing feral cat problem.
      No, I’m not being cruel, I love cats and have had many growing up with most of them being inside/ outside pets. Most times they came home ,but sometimes the did not.

    Please be kind in your comments posted and comments to one another. Remember we are just observers to this live webcam and to all the events that transpire on it. This is a wild bald eagle nest and there has been a variety of prey brought in both live and dead. The cat probably was killed instantly on the road and did not suffer. The eagles and other wildlife put themselves at risk in taking if off the road. The eagles are apex predators at the top of the food-chain and although this is a sensitive and unique event with a domesticated cat being brought in as prey - to the eagles it is all about survival. It is our human emotions that makes it difficult to watch since many are cat owners and lovers. Take care and thank you for your understanding. Hateful, inappropriate or rude comments will be deleted.

      Eagles are mostly scavengers. It's gross, but if you watch the video, it's only a small piece of the cat's body the eagle brought back. The head/neck and part of the leg attached. Cats are too large for an eagle to carry. An eagle can only carry about half its body weight and they only way at the largest 14 lbs. The average housecat is around 10lbs.
      Very unlikely the eagle hunted and killed the cat. Most likely it was dead on a road somewhere. The eagle comes down and fights off the crows/buzzards and brings back whatever is left.

      There's a stray cat in my building that's lived here for at least 6 years. We all love that cat but if it had to go I'd prefer a bald eagle to a car bumper any day of the week. Those eagles fly off with cats like Jeepers Creepers flew off with Darry and their talons get it out the way in a hurry. But that car bumper makes them flop around in agony for a while and it's really painful to watch.
      A few years ago I saw one of my strays lying dead in the driveway of a moving company. I could see the marks from its blood and saliva and it's... Other body parts... on the pavement from where it flopped all over the place. It made me feel really bad because I really like cats... Especially the stray ones because they actually choose you as their friend.
      Too bad a large raptor didn't fly away with it and feed it to its young.

I will skip the “feeding” video with kitty’s head and prepare myself for upcoming videos & live streaming. Thank you @ Lady Hawk for the warning. (Of note, I’ve witnessed this before but now choose if or when to watch. Since the cat was most likely killed by a car it brings some peace of mind knowing he/she will help Eaglets grow stronger. My old cat I grew up with was a lifelong outdoor cat. He would always come home with birds. He would be gone for days sometimes, but always came back. I loved that cat. Had to give it up to my sister when I lost my housing and then he left one day and never came back. Either the wilderness got him finally, or he was sick of my sister.

    This might have been a feral cat but this is the reason you should never let your kitties or small dogs be outside alone. A yorkie was on a leash being walked and an owl swooped down and tried to get it from the owner and they were almost into their house. Feral cats exist because people dump kitties outside and they manage to live and reproduce. I live in the country and I have a horse barn and that attracts feral cats. There was people in the area who let the cats live on their farms and reproduce like rabbits. A large group moved onto my property because of the barn, then my husband was dying from cancer and he was sneak feeding the cats and they were having kittens like crazy. After he died I borrowed live traps and trapped them all, I took them to a place who was doing reduced cost spay and neuter. I got them all fixed and got them shots and brought them back to my place and released them, we fed them and they lived 16 years and gradually died off. But no more kittens. This deep freeze now has just killed the last two. We take care of the bodies so the eagles don’t eat them. Looks like that was hard work carrying a body that heavy and flying with it, she is breathing really hard.

When I opened my kitchen door , I could see one was on a folded lawn chair. I could hear my kitten's meowing behind the freezer. In seconds another flew in front of my face. It was an amazing site to see one so close eye to eye. I will never forget it. I thought someone was trying to steal something from the carport when I first heard the commotion. The cat is dead, roadkill, so it was hit by a car, or in other words, by humans! The eagles don’t distinguish between cat or rabbit or fish! I see it this way and I‘m saying this as a cat owner and a cat lover: since the cat has died (struck by a car) at least it’s food for some other animals! Please think about our factory farms, the way those animals have to suffer to be our food......this is even worse! And being food for the eagles is kind of the same as people who donor their lungs or heart or liver or other organs once dead, so they can give somebody else a new life!! We all (or most of us) appreciate such organ donors! Sure I’m happy it is not my cat, this is why I keep my cats in the house......I certainly feel with the owner of the cat because I personally know how it hurts to ‘lose’ a cat!! But it is definitely not the eagles fault, and neither Lady Hawk’s fault showing this video! Everybody is free to watch or not......

We - humans - have a remarkable and tragic capacity to objectify, thereby eradicating the value, of our fellow creatures.

      @LC-wv7tz ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nope, eagles can't prey on cats/dogs. Kittens probably, but an adult cat is far too large for an eagle to carry. If you watch the video, you see the eagle only brought back pieces of the body. the head/neck with part of a leg attached. Eagles are primarily scavengers. Most likely the cat was hit by a car and the eagle took back the carrion to the nest.
      When they hunt, they hunt fish and other small birds or small mammals like rabbits or squirrels. To kill a cat, the eagle would have to land, but it's doubtful an eagle would even be able to kill an adult housecat as the cat would be far stronger than the eagle unless it was a kitten or a very tiny cat. Most Eagles are less than 10 lbs. the very largest is 14 pounds maybe. Average house cat is about 10 lbs. Eagle can only take off with 2 -3 lbs from landing.
      It's a common myth that eagles try to attack cats and small dogs. Chickens, quail, ducks? Sure. Kittens? Yeah. But adult cats and all but the smallest dogs are far too big for bald eagles.

      P.S. After reading tons of comments, here are some of my own thoughts in response...
      ~1. Far too many humans assume, all the time and re all kinds of things. I don't agree w/the old adage: "When you assume, you make an a** out of u and me" bec u only make one out of yourself, not anyone else, lol. Hence, people are assuming kitty is road kill. Fact = NO one knows what happened to this cat unless! they actually DO know. Hence, this is a GUESS. Many, many things could have happened to result in this cat's death. Why people say this as if a "fact" is beyond me. It MIGHT have been hit by a vehicle, yes. It MIGHT have been killed by many different critters out there, yes. Keyword: might.
      ~~2. Oft times in live critter cam chats, people will butt heads over the realm of feelings. Whether it's our own feelings or our thoughts about the critter's feelings - humans ALWAYS butt heads over this topic. Please remember, when it comes to human emotions, we are not all the same. Some are simply more sensitive than others. Don't chide someone else if they are more sensitive than you.
      ~~~3. Please allow for, and accept, every person here has the right to be who and how they are. No one has the right to denounce another for their own thoughts and feelings however. Live and let live.
      ~~~~4. Finally. Some presume, and have said, that we don't feel anything for the fish and other critters that are killed for food by the eagles and yet, we lament over a cat. Wrong. Whenever I have seen ANY live creature brought to a nest, I go away, returning only after the creature has passed away. I don't want to see any living creature killed, period. Having an emotional reaction to the remains of a deceased cat seems rather normal to me, since cats are so very loved in a very personal way by many people, including me. So yes please - remember we are all different, we have a rt to be so and let's just accept that, in a kind way. If you can't be kind about it, then please just be quiet! 🤣😉🙊 Thank you. ❤🦅🦅🦅🦅

    I am so proud of the commenters on this thread! There is SO much good sense being spoken here. Usually, in other threads I've seen, there is an ongoing battle between those who are cat lovers and those who are saying that housecats don't belong outdoors. I mean fierce battles!!
    So to see so much agreement on the truth is refreshing and I'm proud of both sides here!
    Common sense truth:
    1. HOUSEcats belong IN the house!
    2. HOUSEcats, being domesticated, do not have the natural instincts that wild cats do. Therefore they are on the menu for so many species, just to name a few: any large raptor, foxes, wolves, bobcats, coyotes, mountain lions, large snakes and this is a short list! Even when gone over feral, they take many many generations to acquire anything close to natural instincts.
    3. Domestic cats are an invasive species and destroy countless numbers of natural wildlife.
    This is the first time I've seen a thread about this type of topic where almost everyone is using mutual respect and restraint!
    THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU 😊💕🐕🐈🦅
