    The last several days have been very difficult for the DNR eagle family with Dad missing since Tuesday April 26th and Mom defending the nest and her eaglets from intruders. There has been a lack of food and E1's aggression rose to new heights today resulting in three brutal attacks upon E2 and ultimately pushing E2 off the nest at 20:21.
    The folks at Minnesota Nongame responded immediately and found E2 on the ground and brought to the Raptor Center for evaluation. Be sure to see the two photos of E2 at the end of the video when they rescued it. Sadly, the internal injuries to E2 were so great they had to humanely euthanize the baby. This is such heartbreaking news that we have lost E2 and possibly Dad as well. My condolences go out to all the viewers who love this eagle family and nest and are grieving over this terrible loss today. Minnesota Nongame DNR has issued a statement and I will pin it to the comment section of the video. RIP sweet E2 - your suffering is over. Your bravery and strength to survive was an inspiration to all of us who loved you. Fly high on angel wings baby ~ we will never forget you. 💔 Thank you for watching!

    Minnesota Nongame Wildlife Program April 30th 2022 ~ "This afternoon at about 1:00, at the EagleCam nest, the younger chick was pushed out of the nest by its sibling. Nongame staff were contacted and retrieved the chick from the ground as soon as we were made aware of the incident. The nest is roughly 75 feet high.
    The young eagle was able to be quickly brought to the veterinarians at The Raptor Center for care. On arrival, the young bird was quiet and got increasing lethargic throughout the exam. A wound was found on it’s head and it had increased effort to breathe. Throughout the exam, it’s breathing got more labored, most likely a result from internal trauma. Blood was noted coming from the nares (nostrils) of the bird.It had a fracture of the humerus very close to the joint in it’s left wing that impacted the growth plate area. With this kind of fracture, there is not an option to repair it surgically and it cannot be left alone to heal as the bone would heal in a way that would cause chronic problems and pain for the bird.Because of the very poor prognosis due to the complex fracture and severely progressing signs of internal trauma, the young bird was humanely euthanized to alleviate suffering.
    Nongame would like to thank Thomas Demma, The Raptor Center staff, USFWS, and to Conservation Officer Tetrault for their lightening fast assistance. It is at least comforting to know the chick didn't have to suffer with it's injuries for a long time. Please be kind in your comments, we are all very sad about this outcome."

      Hi Lady Hawk, I just have one question. These brutal attacks took place in front of everyone's eyes, including those who could have intervened to prevent this "announced" tragedy. Why was nothing done to prevent this if everything indicated that E2 was seriously injured? 💔

      @@ladyhawk Thank you for trying. Nature can be so cruel at times. These images from that nest are sad and difficult to watch, yes, but the mother eagle is raising the little one and hopefully it will fledge. Think about it, this bird will be a fierce survivor and most likely to succeed. The mamma bird will eventually find a new mate.

    Thank you Lady Hawk for the update. I was watching live when that happened. A heartfelt thank you to Lady Hawk and The Raptor Center. I am retired and watched this family from the beginning. I came in from cutting the grass and checked in on my eagle family. I saw the mom and E1 and no E2. I was in a panic looking all over the screen for little E2. I went back about an hour and saw the relentless attack on E2 by the older E1. This relentless attack started long before in their short lives. E1 was always pecking on little E2's head whenever he had the chance especially at dinnertime. I did not know that Dad has been gone since Tuesday, April 26. I guess this is life in the real world but as I watched this family daily since the beginning, they were my family too. I would yell every time I saw E1 pecking on the head of his younger sibling. I hope and pray for Mom and E1's survival and for Dad hoping that he shows up for the family and us too. God Bless you little E2, you are now safe in heaven free from hunger, fear, pain, and your mean head pecking sibling. Again, thank you so much to Lady Hawk and the people at The Raptor Center for caring and being with little E2 in his last hours here on earth. I have lost a little family member and I grieve. God Bless you all who with me kept a loving and caring eye on an eagle family we felt was our own. R.I.P E2, loved, missed, but never forgotten!!

      @ladyhawk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      It is just so tragic -I had hopes that each day that passed that E2 would be able to overcome the aggression with enough food brought in. To see Dad disappear I fear he is gone as well and that could bring more tragedy to the nest with E1 and starvation. I have seen an eaglet die of starvation and it is a slow and painful process. You do not not want to watch it. I do not know if DNR would step in - already E1 has gone days without food. Unless Mom hunts tomorrow it may already be too late. Thank you for your heartfelt comment and concern for this eagle family. We all share in this emotion. ♥

      Bonking is natural for eaglets and other birds of prey. Siblicide such as this and the Dale Hollow nest are not normal. Some may want you to believe this is the norm, but it is not. Only 4% of eagles have a siblicide incident. These birds attack the smaller even when food is not an issue. 4% does not mean normal. It is abnormal. I believe these eagles who do it to this degree have some sort of genetic deficiency.

      Yes, make sure to read the description. I've never seen a sibling fight like that either. I assumed there had to be a food shortage involved, and that turned out to be the case. Apparently, E1 sensed times were tough and its survival was at stake. It's not like poor E2 didn't fight back bravely either. Nature never fails to amaze!

When there sometimes isn’t a clear “winner” without fighting then more food energy is spent trying to figure out who is “bigger”. In asynchronous hatching there is a winner without fighting

    I haven't viewed this nest since last season when Harry & Nancy were the eagle pair. I've been watching Jackie & Shadow Big Bear, CA and Samson & Gabby (in NE Florida). And then, I just decided to see what's happening with this nest only to find out about the family's tragedies.
    It's so sad for Harry and the family...that he went missing. And then to hear about the eaglet. Just too sad. Way too much work for Nancy alone. With these cams, we've had such a great opportunity to learn more than we ever could by only reading. We get to see them LIVE and just what it takes for a bald eagle pair to bond, maintain nest, support each other and their eaglets when incubating and after hatched to fledging. And we sure do get very attached to them. 🦅💕
    Unfortunately, we also see them in the realm of the dangerous nature with various outcomes like a family under attack by other birds, when food scarcity hits or when something like Harry encountering danger for himself. We definitely want to know more than we'll probably learn. With the scarcity of food, it's not uncommon for the stronger eaglet to dispatch its sibling. Even under good food stock conditions, the sibling rivalry for the food is already an issue with the Balds. But, it's still very hard to watch nature play out before us.
    It's not unheard of for another male to come to a nest to usurp that role of a missing male...with Mom's permission. I'm sure Nancy would welcome the help right now, still having to feed and guard her surviving eaglet. I hope that happens for her real soon.

    Just wondering.
    Did E1 show unusual aggression towards E2 before dad disappeared and food ran short?
    (Edit: @Victor Spurio II says that he observed E1 being aggressive towards E2 from the day the latter hatched. Incessant head pecking even when food was sufficient. This is not apparently the norm in eagle nests. E1 was super aggressive from the start).
    I speculate that siblicide among eagles (and other large raptors) is far more likely when food runs low (death of the father, bad weather) than in normal times.
    I have very little experience (in terms of mins spent on YT) watching eagles compared to English kestrels, English and American (Californian) peregrine falcons, and now Scottish ospreys.

    The attack was long and intense, but had developed from many days prior. The innate instincts of BAEA for survival and possessing food was likely triggered in E1 due a percieved lack of food. E1 was motivated by instinct not “hate”. The life of E2 was tragic and short, but the impact cannot be measured by time, as Nature brings All things into one to have a powerful impact seen or unseen. We will not know all the whys as to what happened, but it will work for something great that is yet to be revealed. I pray and hope for Nancy and E1, and that they will be protected and lifted up in time. I pray for Harry to return safely too. Let’s believe for the Spirit of a turnaround. Thank you so much Lady Hawk for giving us a lens, and a hope that we can remain steadfast upon.

He always sat on the nest when the mother would leave, and was so attentive and loving, and when the chicks hatched there was always an abundance of food...fishes and prey laying everywhere in the nest, and the mom and dad both were always feeding the chicks.
      E1 has always been aggressive toward E2 since E2 hatched. I remember his first day on earth, and E1 was attacking him..and he was just a couple days old himself. E1 was always beating down E2 when it cam to feeding time. But E2 gained strength and size, i thought he would start being able to defend himself.
      But the father went missing, and i noticed a lack of food in the nest and at feeding times in the last few days. It has not been like that before. He might have gotten the flu
      I always thought something might happen to the little beloved E2, I was always rooting for him. E2 was my fave because he always showed a fighting spirit to live in spite of the bullying of E1. I knew it would be by the hand of E1 should something happen to him.
      But now mom had to defend the nest and hunt, do everything by herself...it might not have happened if dad was still there. • @Steevee14
      @Steevee14 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since the father went missing, the elder sibling could sense that less food was being brought to the nest, so, as nature operates, better to increase the chance that one eaglet would survive, rather than risk having both of them starve. It's kind of silly (but understandable) to call the elder sibling's behavior "vicious" - anthropomorphism adds little, if anything, to an objective understanding of nature.
