Here's a question I hear almost daily: "Dr. Gundry, should I try the keto diet?"
Well, as you'll hear on today's episode, there's one BIG problem with most versions of the keto diet...
And it's not necessarily what's IN the keto diet, but what most people leave OUT.
It's not just the keto folks, either. In fact, just 5 percent of the U.S.
population gets enough of this important nutrient from their diet.
Which is too bad, because when you combine this "super nutrient" with a TRUE keto diet, it can help you transform your metabolism, strengthen your gut microbiome, balance your hormones, and help you lose weight.
I'm talking, of course, about FIBER.
And on today's episode, I'm chatting with Naomi Whittel, the New York Times bestselling author of Glow15. She's got a brand new book out called High Fiber Keto all about how to make the keto diet work for YOU.
Naomi and I will discuss how a modified keto diet can help you lose weight, shrink body fat, improve blood pressure, lower blood sugar, and more.
    In this episode, you'll learn:
04:35 - If the keto diet is right for YOU
09:15 - The BIGGEST mistake people make on the keto diet (and why it's so important to fix)
12:20 - One HUGE misconception people have about the keto diet and why it keeps people from achieving the results they want
16:05 - Whether keto will raise your cholesterol levels
18:45 - How to incorporate THIS important nutrient into the keto diet (in my opinion, this is KEY to success on keto)
23:35 - The WORST type of fiber you can eat (and the best ones to eat instead)
26:15 - The shocking reason so many people always feel hungry (and it's NOT what you think)
28:30 - Where you should be buying the fats you eat
31:10 - What a typical day on the keto diet actually should look like
35:30 - Why you can't go into ketosis until you fix THIS
37:15 - How to fight off the "keto flu" by consuming more of this one specific mineral
39:45 - How keto can improve your mood and even reduce symptoms of menopause
41:20 - Whether it's safe to be in ketosis for the long-term (and when you need to stay in ketosis)
49:00 - How to increase your tolerance for certain "danger foods"
Everything you need to live a long and healthy life delivered straight to your inbox! SIGN UP for Dr. Gundry's newsletter here: drgundry.com

Just eat big leafy green salads, lots of non starchy cruciferous veggies. Olives good too. if you need it add psyllium husk into your chaffle or muffin recipies. Also my personal experience don't get caught up in the packaged keto foods stores want to sell, just eat natural whole foods.

I've been Keto & 18-6 Intermittent Fasting for 2.5 years. For my daily fiber I eat 2-Tbsp of Korean Kimchi, a dozen dill pickle slices, half a container (3/4oz) of Japanese Natto (Vit K2-MK7), and a dollop of the Garlic/Ginger pulp from when I make my Garlic-Ginger-ACV-Lemon-Cinnamon tonic which I take 2-Tbsp every morning on an empty stomach with the dollop of pulp.
I have reversed my Diabetes-2 and got off three meds. Reduced my A1c from 11.5 down to 5.3 !!

      Thx for sharing....
I have been studying the literature on fiber for the past years and found that there is NO proof on humans relying on fiber at all.....from the literature, fiber seems to be completely unnecessary....if you have any sources, please let me know...

Congrats, you have changed your life for the better. I kind of just drifted into eating once a day and that's been going on for almost six months now. It's amazing how great I feel, even sleep better. And the joy of not thinking about food all the time - it's a miracle. if I honestly feel hungry and water or tea won't suffice, I'll eat a small avocado or a small plate of Kalamata olives and that's all it takes. Amazing.

What Naomi says about people not even trying a keto diet is also true for the Plant Paradox eating plan. Once I started and my cravings stopped I was like a born again Christian, telling my friends and family about what a miracle it was for me. It's been almost a year and a half now and I'm still going strong. But - of the four friends and family that bought the PP book, not one of them even started. My sister told me she just couldn't go on such a restrictive plan (restrictive??), my niece said the same, two or three friends were so afraid of the 3-day fast (that I kept saying was not a real fast) that they also never started. The PP eating plan has saved my life. I've lost 20-25 kgs of weight ,and other than recently discovering I have gallbladder stones, I'm as healthy as a horse. Haven't felt this great since I was in my 20s. Both parents had arthritis, which I had as well but now, after eating the PP way, I take no meds, my feet used to kill me, that's gone, my knees that several doctors told me I would have to replace, though still aching when I lift and move heavy things, it's no longer anything I'm conscious of. My hands are much better - just a little stiff in the mornings but goes away the moment I get up and start moving. Anyway, sorry for rambling on - I just wanted to make the point that far too many people cannot wrap their minds around how we actually should be eating and not what our MDs tell us is the right way. Thanks Dr G. you really did save me!

A healthy diet starts in the grocery store. If you buy healthy food, you increase your chances of eating healthy increases. Also, people need to list the foods you should eat while keeping in mind the foods you shouldn't eat. People need to learn to prepare their food so it remains healthy. My biggest was that keeps me eating healthy is not to eat when I am hungry.

Thank you again, Dr. Gundry, I got Naomi's book halfway through the podcast. I've bought five of your books, and I've just begun your Plant Paradox diet. I'm seventy-one years old with COPD, and I'm aFib. I'm a disabled vet, and get all my care and medications from the Mountain Home VA Medical Center in Johnson City, TN. I'm currently taking thirteen prescription medications. I feel good about what I've learned from your books, and the pod-cast I've listened to. BTW, your book, The Plant Paradox, was recommended to me by my primary physician, Dr. Kathrine Tanner.

Variation is the key to keeping any diet. I'm a strict pescatarian and do keto with IF, but after loosing 10 kg I'm not loosing much anymore. But I'm passed menopause and I think my metabolism is broken. I even gain weight some days, although I'm very strict and not cheating and work out...🥺. And I'm constipated. High fibre keto sounds great to me! I will try it for sure!

Great video! I'm new to Keto but not to fasting. My deep fasts are water only 2-3 days with 10 day being my max. Many of your observations will be taken under consideration as I move forward. Many of the foods you talk about I never heard about before. Too much protein will show in your urine so be moderate. Oh, my Dr. has mentioned more fiber. My weight loss has been steady when in Ketosis. I'm not in Ketosis all the time, but most of the time.

Aluminum is so pervasive in the earth's crust, that it's in all our foods. There's more of it in breast milk/formula than in a vaccination. The mercury in vaccines is ethyl mercury, not methyl mercury...2 different compounds. Drinking ethanol (alcohol) will make u tipsy/ methanol will kill u...huge difference.

Dr.Gundry, thanks for such interesting information)) obviously I have a food intolerance to dairy products, eggs, nuts, grazing chicken and fish products. It is expressed in heaviness in the chest&breathing problems. Even after a few teaspoons of quality fish oil. However, blood tests show only an allergy to cereals, rice, soy, and a mild reaction to eggs and almonds. That's why I can't switch to the keto diet, because I can't eat eggs, sardines or even fish oil. Of the animal proteins, only grazing beef and pork are present in my diet. I am not overweight, I am rather below the norm. I would be grateful for advice on whether there is a way to change the situation.

Svetlana, you need to switch to carnivore for a few months to heal your autoimmune response to these foods. Once healed, you can try reintroducing all these foods. I was on carnivore for 8 months and only now moved back to keto (I was on it for years before). Carnivore, along with proper hydration and electrolytes, healed my migraines (I applied Stanton migraine protocol).

From what 'I'm hearing here I don't know if I am in Ketoses or not.8 weeks ago I started the Keto journey I was 9 KG over my ideal weight.I started out drinking 2 teaspoons of lemon juice with 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in 2 glasses of water half hour before a meal. Within 3 days of not taking in sugar, I cut back on carbs at the end of 3 days I had no hunger or cravings for all the rubbish that I was eating before. Then I started to do fasting I stated at 12/12 I kept that up for a couple of weeks I then extended my fasting to where I'm at this point and that is I now have now lost the 9KG in weight. I now only have 1 meal in a 24 hour period. Now the big question I'm I in Ketoses or not?

she is so spot on about the giving up thing, I thought it would be impossible for me to give up sweet stuff like apple tart, apple pie, cookies and muffins along with honey in my herbal tea etc I have had a sweet tooth since I was a child and throughout my adult life.
but I had to change as I had terrible gut problems low energy and poor sleep I was still slim with a flat belly at 65.
a friend who is a practitioner of TCM told me to cut out sugar and I tried several times but always failed.
but then I cut out carbs as much as posable and tried again and this time it's working its been three months no sugar no carbs and I have never felt better in my life, if I knew how good I would feel I would have done this a lot sooner I have no carvings at all now and even a little honey in my tea is too much.
so what you are really giving up is feeling like shit every day,
pardon my language but there is no other way to say it.
having a clogged up system is hell on earth it takes all the joy out of life.

You trust a chiropractor for nutrition??? He should not be using his chiro "Dr." label as it is misleading, making people think he has gone through an academic rigor that he has not.
It is fine to present nutritional information without being a "doctor." But using that label, in a case like Berg, is disengenuous and manipulative.

Fascinating interview. Thanks for it. One point I was confused about (so far) was the idea that the bacteria in the microbiome can directly communicate with the brain using hunger signals. This is counterintuitive as they aren’t actually cells of the body but are really parasites, albeit good ones. Is there any research to back this up?
The other point is that the discussion on gut bacteria seems to assume that the types of bacteria should remain fixed, irrespective of the body’s diet. This is also counterintuitive as one would surely expect the types of bacteria in the gut to evolve to be appropriate to the body’s diet. I.e. if one type is starved of its food, it dies off and others that thrive on the new diet will grow to take its place. The net result of your finer approach is to say the gut bacteria that needs fibre must be fed as no other type of bacteria can do what it does. This is more a symbiotic relationship, which I don’t believe anyone has yet postulated, especially as we now know that ancient humans had very little fibre in their diet, so our bodies have evolved not needing it.

Microbiota is 10 times ,our human cells,99 percent genes we carry. We human have 23,000 genes in every cell.We carry millions of micro biota genes.Food quality, amount, timing to eat, sleep, breathing, posture, dealing with stress, exercise ,moving all affect our microbiota. This is nano biology .Microbiota is 80 percent of our immune system ,70 percent neurotransmitters ,gut is called second brain. Why ?It is because has many nerve cells and nerve fibers more than spinal cord.Webare part of the whole ecosystem. We need light, sunlight like plant. In every cell we have an organelle called mitochondria produce our energy. These mitochondriavare pro bacteria living in symbiosis.Microbiota is a chemical factory ,communicate with each other. There is microbiota on the skin, mouth, nose, nervous system ,brain, vagina, urethra, fetus in uterus.Weknow nothing .It is tip of ice berg.I eat three types of yogart one contain Lactbacillus Rueteri, oncon three alive bacteria, activia 5 but re do it ,too much sugar, all made at home with soya milk.sprouted green lentils raw, green mong been. Not easy .

I have been keto to carnivore for the last 2 1/2 years. A few days after switching to keto I noticed that I wasn’t hungry between meals. After about 6 weeks I started skipping breakfast because I just wasn’t hungry at that time of day anymore. Now I usually have 1 or maybe 2 meals a day. When the food that you eat is what your body needs it doesn’t take the immense will power that it takes when you’re eating sweet potatoes and boiled chicken ( ask me how I know). I no longer crave the carbohydrate laden foods that I once did. Both me and my wife have lost over 60 lbs and completely reversed T2 diabetes.

Also people being scared of eating too much protein for fear of being 'kicked' out of keto! 🤦‍♂️. We should be eating much more animal protein than we do, 1g/lb is a good starting point especially for the elderly!

Wheat was different. Vegetables and fruit had higher nutritional content. People consumed more fiber. People were more physically active.
My ancestors ate a lot of homegrown complex carbs. They lived well into their 80s and mid 90s.
