    Mabye less work to build a frame from scratch?

  • @grandcherokeezj

    Did the place on the frame where the VIN number is was very damaged with rust? For what I saw on your video it look it had a bit of rust, did you do something special to remove the rust without damaging the VIN number? I have a TJ 2.5 and in my country, once a year our vehicles have to pass an inspection in order to circulate on roads, and the VIN number must be readable, though here our weather isn't so severe and the frames rarely get to the state your was.

    Most shops would turn down doing that,liability issues come up.Buy another frame instead that is rust free.You can buy a new aftermarket frame for at least $600.00

    • @p0weraid
      @p0weraid 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      a aftermarket frame is $2500 for this Jeep...

    • @Toolaholic7
      @Toolaholic7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then who is liable when that frame breaks again?The shop that did it is liable for this.

    • @p0weraid
      @p0weraid 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah but this isn't a shop he's repairing his own Jeep and using it himself so he's fully aware of the issue but I understand what your saying with liability. How ever I seen many frames patched hold up great

    • @Toolaholic7
      @Toolaholic7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Won't pass a safety inspection with states that do inspections yearly

    Box frame with holes in it...........pure genius!! Why didn't they just use C frames?

    • @DarkLinkAD
      @DarkLinkAD 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      IIRC the older CJs used C frames.

    That's some good patch work. Wanna come fix up the frame on my girlfriend's YJ Renegade? haha. Actually if all goes well, we'll have her frame patched up this weekend and I can have the video up a few days later, but I doubt it'll be as nice a fix as yours.

    Can't you get a new chassis ? Is it that much more to buy just the frame and install everything off the bad one ? I see guys here on you tube build a new chassis from scratch..

    • @serama555
      @serama555  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure if you can buy a new frame any more but they were prohibitively expensive from the factory. Maybe the aftermarket has started making them? I don't know I haven't checked in years. But this frame in the video is junk! I decided its not safe to use. If I ever get back to this project I think I will try to weld up a new frame.

    not bad man. use what you got to get em fixed. if u had more steele, you could of wrapped the frame with steele. but it should do for a few years. nice. great tip on the drain holes. especially if you mud it. im sure u do. cheeers

  • @404-e5b
    @404-e5b 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for documenting your work and sharing knowledge. Im going to chk my TJ to see if it has any holes drilled for drainage. If it don't, Im drilling some drain plugs and washing it out before it becomes a problem :)

    Nice job. I see the VT plates, we know rust here. I don't know why manufacturers still make box frames with no drains. Toyota has had this problem for 25 years and doesn't address the problem. Old C-channel frames may rust, but not like this.

    Nice work! A jeep chassis looks quite lightweight in comparison to a Land Rover chassis though.

  • @grandcherokeezj
    @grandcherokeezj 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    In your video at min 2.26 you see a part of your frame without rust near the mount with a line of rust in the middle, that's where the VIN number usually is located on the TJ ( the line of rust), the VIN is carved with tiny dots and even when the frame is new if it has dirt they are difficult to read clearly. Here in most European countries the plate on the dash is no good for inspection issues, you have to have either carved on the frame or body (unibody like zj's) and also the fabric plate.
