Vintage Dakota Southern Railway South Dakota

Home movies and news footage of Dakota Southern Railway from 1985-1991. DSRC began running trains on state-owned ex-Milwaukee Road track in 1985 on the Napa-Platte, South Dakota branch (82 miles). It then expanded in 1987-88 to the Mitchell-Kadoka line (187 miles) and abandoned the Platte line in 1989.

It seems Mr Alex Huff did an amazing job bringing this RR back from the dead. I heard he no longer has interest in the RR. I hope the new owners realize there would be no RR had it not been for MR. Huff.

Plus I have been to Rapid City a dozen times and I have visited the western end of the line and it connects with the yard and the line goes to the airport but most of it is out of service with all crossings closed. Hopefully the Dakota Southern will open the line all they way to Rapid.

Someday DSRC should get its trackage rehabilitated,New Railings,Ties & Fresh Ballast may later be used.Also increase its track speed.

Actually the Mitchell to Rapid City line was not a dead end line. It interchanged with the Chicago and Northwestern since they interchanged with their yard.

Yesterday when I whent over the grade crossing in reliance it was mowed but at the Kennebec elevator there was no signs of Trains Does anybody know where to get DSRC hat.

Basically due to lack of business. Only moved about 150 cars the last year of operation....hardly enough to justify needed repairs.

if i make a railroad line and would have a main line from the poweder river basin i would use this line easy traffic from the cole mines to Minneapolis, st paul, chicago, Milwaukee ect. i dont know why they dont use this line for coal service!! and i think dakota southern railway should start servicing coal! would build so much more traffic and money for this railroad!

Im going to write a letter to bnsf and tell them to use this line, it would save this line and tons of fuel for getting north east
