They've spent countless hours and a significant sum of money trying to make this happen. The exclusion of women from the draft is rooted in patriarchy, as including them in the draft would have meant admitting they are qualified to serve various roles in the military. Historically speaking these roles were considered decent career options and paths to both social capital and financial independence. At the time, men did not want women to have either of these things, and as a result excluded them from the draft. I personally am split on the issue for a few reasons: 1) The draft should really just be repealed for everyone at this stage. In the US at least, it is a silly moot concept. People like to make a big deal about it, but the truth is that in the 250 year history of the United States, the chance of a man being drafted has been 0% for all but like 8 years. Even then the chance was usually under 1% (during 3 years in WWII it went up significantly, but the chance of being drafted, seeing combat, and dying/being injured in combat was still under 1%). Now with the advent of nuclear weapons this is no longer a realistic consideration. It mainly just functions as a talking point for political pundits. 2) I would want to see significant analysis and by potential reform of the military itself before advocating for en masse female inclusion. In other words, if the realistic intention is to draft women & men at relatively equal numbers then you'd better take proactive steps right now to ensure that women are treated fairly and equally once they are drafted. There better be adequate facilities to accommodate them, they better be fully represent in the leadership structure, and they must have the necessary institutional protections to prevent discrimination. The worst thing would be to set up a legal framework to force women into an institution that oppresses them. This is essentially what happened to African American men initially.

I want equality but equality begins in the home. Studies have shown even when women work outside of the home the same amount as men they do more the childcare and housework. So if one partner is off fighting for the country dosent it make sense to send the one that on average consistently shows they can't handel work household duties and childcare. Men are far more likely to divorce their spouse if they get seriously ill or injured where women tend to stay and lookafter their spouse. Having a strong support system in the home to provide care has been shown to decrese recovery time and have better overall recovery. It also mean less public resources are needed to care for an individual. Women are also far more likely to lookafter a family member in need so this frees up healthcare workers for the war effort. Eg if the grandparents are being cared for at home that's less nurses needed to look after them in a home that could instead be focused on healing soldiers. Women are on average already the primary carers of children single mothers mothers that are primary carers so they have support systems and networks in place to help each other out. Most mothers already have a network of other mothers that can help care for their children while they work extra hours to support the war effort and they inturn help them with their children. Fathers are less likely to have those pre existing networks and are less likely to be the primary or sole carers of offspring. I am all for women being drafted when men step up and prove they can handel everything at home. As a feminists I want equality but I don't see a war draft as equal when we still dont have equality in everyday life. When we ask 2 people compromise should we be asking the person that is getting less in the deal already to give 1st or the person that has more?

In my country every men has to go to military at least for half a year, and women can also go if they want to.

However I did say that if there was a draft, men and women alike should both be drafted. So I’m not sure what your comments purpose is, considering I never said anything that disagreed with your sentiment. I also never said anything about feminism, just that I believed in equal rights. I only clarify this bc I believe there are many women who use the term feminist to serve their own purpose, which quite often their purpose doesn’t seem to coincide with equal rights. Anyway, I do hope that we can both agree on this. Equal rights are necessary and should go both ways.
I want equality but equality begins in the home. Studies have shown even when women work outside of the home the same amount as men they do more the childcare and housework. So if one partner is off fighting for the country dosent it make sense to send the one that on average consistently shows they can't handel work household duties and childcare.
Men are far more likely to divorce their spouse if they get seriously ill or injured where women tend to stay and lookafter their spouse. Having a strong support system in the home to provide care has been shown to decrese recovery time and have better overall recovery. It also mean less public resources are needed to care for an individual.
Women are also far more likely to lookafter a family member in need so this frees up healthcare workers for the war effort. Eg if the grandparents are being cared for at home that's less nurses needed to look after them in a home that could instead be focused on healing soldiers.
Women are on average already the primary carers of children single mothers mothers that are primary carers so they have support systems and networks in place to help each other out. Most mothers already have a network of other mothers that can help care for their children while they work extra hours to support the war effort and they inturn help them with their children. Fathers are less likely to have those pre existing networks and are less likely to be the primary or sole carers of offspring.
I am all for women being drafted when men step up and prove they can handel everything at home. As a feminists I want equality but I don't see a war draft as equal when we still dont have equality in everyday life. When we ask 2 people compromise should we be asking the person that is getting less in the deal already to give 1st or the person that has more?

People have been trying to get it abolished for years to no avail, and the closest we would've come to getting it done would've been in removing the gendered language of the selective service so that everyone would've been applicable within age group, which would then naturally have led to outrage, one way or the other, over women being included in that, which would have forced a total abolition of the draft for everyone if they wanted to disallow it for women again because of the non-gendered language change.
...only problem is that some idiotic conservative politicians started a 'don't draft our daughters' campaign and got the bill to fail the vote.
