COPPER OR MIRENA IUD? || *Honest* Storytime of my IUD Experience with Copper & Mirena IUDs

  • Hello friends xx
Welcome to my honest story time of my experience with the Copper IUD and the Mirena IUD! This is a brutally honest storytime - like I spill the full truth about my experience with the Copper and the Mirena! I made this in an attempt to help you guys make an educated decision on which IUD to get, knowing all the different factors to consider such as your mental health, your natural periods, your previous reaction to hormonal birth control etc!! It is a very tough decision, one which I still question 8 months into having the Mirena! It sucks that as women we are the ones responsible for being pregnancy, birthing a child and also preventing pregnancy with such invasive or unnatural methods!
Long story short, I am the girl who never agreed with putting hormones in your body while majority of my friends went on the pill
    DISCLAIMERS:

I do know the hormone levels of an iud are much much lower than that of oral contraceptives, and on top of that, most of those hormones are absorbed by the uterus and only very low levels actually circulate systemically. Oral contraceptives circulate systemically fully. I actually looked up the serum levels in research studies and such after I heard that. Just throwing this out there in case it’s helpful to anyone.

knowing is this what made me go with the Liletta instead of the copper one. I was nervous about an increase of hormones because I heard so many stories of bad breakouts, etc. When the doctor explained the hormones stay in the uterus it made me feel a little better. Definitely not opposed to hormones being that I was on the pill for a long time

Skyla gave me horrible side effects compared to no method at all, as well as any other method I tried. My copper IUD has been the best so far out of skyla, Annovera, various pills. It took 15 years for me to get this method and it's really low maintenance.

My withdrawal bleed with the Mirena coil was just 5 days and I only experienced nausea with mood swings for like 2 days . Heard withdrawl bleeds with methods such as provera can be heavy and prolonged.

I’ve just got recently gotten the copper iud and honestly it’s been my best birth control choice yet, my doctor had me take some medicine to soften my cervix the night before my appointment so im sure that helped a lot along with having a baby. It honestly felt like a pinch and that was it, basically felt like a cervix dilation exam. 10/10 would recommend. Of course it’s only been a month so far😅

That is so great! This may be TMI question but how have you found your periods so far? I definitly think having a baby / medication must help with the insertion process because getting my second IUD felt much better too! So maybe its only painful for the first time perahps :) So glad you have found something that works!

Thank you for making this video. I have the copper iud and was thinking about how theres some side effects I don’t like and how sometimes i want to switch to the Marena. but those side effects of what I have despite being horrid, I can’t imagine getting worse or there being more. Especially changing my mental health for the worst again. I pray that your mental health improves regardless of which birth control works out. You can do it! ❤

Thanks lovely! I absolutely think that the Marena works differently for everyone and I have many friends who love it and have repeated got it :) I recon a good indication might be how you’ve reacted to hormonal contraception in the past - but even then it’s hard to know what works best for our bodies until we try them 💗💗

Thank you for this. I had such an awful experience with mirena insertion that it would have put me off ever switching to a copper coil if I hadn't found this video. I have complex problems anyway - lots of medication risk factors - and didn't understand what was going on with the nausea and full body rejection after insertion, so it was incredibly frightening for both me and my boyfriend. Obviously I was okay within 24 hours too, and I eventually had it removed because the hormones in both the pill and mirena IUD wrecked my mental health. A copper IUD could be the answer now I know for sure that this is a common experience and wasn't a disability emergency or something going drastically wrong! I wish it was spoken about more and not framed as 'pain' when what it feels like is a full body rejection and shutdown.

Your experience is a rare experience that happens to a few women (especially women who haven’t given birth) who can kind of go into shock from having the uterus touched. I had this happened when I got my second IUD. Nobody told me to wait 30 mins so I was driving and throwing up in a cup while I was trying to find a parking lot to pull over in and I had to lay down in my seat because I feel feverish and nauseous and had the worst cramps of my life…. it felt like I needed to go the bathroom, but couldn’t so the pressure would just keep rolling in and with it the nausea and cramps. It definitely sucked, but I fell asleep for like 10 hours (after finally getting home, it took me 2 hours to drive home which was only 45 mins away) when I woke up I felt fine. I had my first one inserted under heavy painkillers during a surgery so I had no idea what I was in store for that day when I went to the my doctors.

    • @StephanieJD1.0
      @StephanieJD1.0  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Omg I’m so sorry that happened to you! I definitely think it’s worse when you’re not expecting it to be that bad - no time to mentally prepare or ensure support is there to drive you home for example! May I ask if that was your experience with the Mirena or Copper IUD? I’m curious to know if one causes those effects more xx

@@StephanieJD1.0 I’ve had the Mirena and twice (so been a user for 6.5 years now). The side effects get milder as your body regulates to the hormones. My periods are next to nonexistent and when they do happen they are usually heavy and take about 3 weeks to go away. But this doesn’t happen to often, maybe 4 times a year.

I relate to you so much.. I went on Yasmin when I was 17 for acne/periods and I thought I was fine until about a year ago when I started experiencing depression and extreme mood swings. I would drive to school crying and after class I would cry in my car and I would cry before bed. I felt like I was going insane. I’m not sure if I was experiencing it before but I ended up getting the kyleena earlier this week. It has less hormones than mirena. I’m hoping it will make me feel better than the pill! I’ve tried several different hormonal birth controls and I’m 19. I took a break when I started school for around a year, but needed the peace of mind so Ive had to go back. I thought it was normal the way I have been feeling mentally and physically. The break is proof enough for me that it is the hormones. I have always had trouble with my mental health, but it got worse since I started this journey a few years ago. Only during that break did I feel a little better. Now again, I feel less motivated to do anything. Physically it feels like I’m detached from my body. It sucks🥺
I’m going to try the copper although I have iron deficiency, like you mentioned. It seems like the best choice for me.

It is such a difficult decision because both can have pros and cons! The large majority of my girlfriends are on the mirena and have had very good experiences. Some are even on their second or third 5 year one! I think everyone reacts differently so you could always try and if it’s bad get it out I suppose! I definitely recommend going to chat to your doctor about the side effects including the discharge, always worth getting them to figure out what’s going on! Could be so many factors I suppose, but always good to know and treat xxx
