    I've said this on a different channel but, I think as a professional DIY'er, having a pico and borescope are really 2 important (tho expensive) tools to have. With them you're able to confirm (not guess) what's up with a DTC like this before getting into a lot of disassembly. If I were a 9-5 tech, perhaps I'd know from pure frequency of repairs what an engine is doing simply due to the number of times I've done the repair. As that's not the case, having the ability to test/confirm by literally only removing a single spark plug is truly fantastic. The fact that a customer can then make their decision based on this evidence is great and we're not accused of firing the parts cannon at a problem (only to have the problem go unsolved). I thank you Mike for showing these repair approaches back-to-back. It really emphasized to me how important these 2 tools are.

    As a poor DIY'er, who can't afford any brand of useful scope,
    I'd have to use the braille method:
    Clear flood crank to see if I could hear any mechanical issue, if not, then I'd be swapping parts:
    Swap plug to hole 4
    Swap coil to hole 5
    Swap injector to hole 6
    If the misfire moved, then you know what the problem was. If it didn't, then I'd use test lights to make sure of power, ground and signal for number 1 injector and coil.
    If I still didn't find the problem, then I'd have to break out the compression tester. I would probably have taken a reading off of 1, 4, 5 and 6 due to the layout of the engine.
    I'm reasonably sure I'd have found the problem, nowhere nearly as quickly as you, though.
    Keep up the good work!

      Hey Jim, thanks for watching! Yes, you would have come to the same conclusion eventually. In the shop, professionally, time is money. At home time is a little more free to investigate different paths. In the end though, all that matters is that the car is fixed right the first time :)

    I think the hardest part of scope use is ease of access. My laptop - hantek/scope module 4 channel with all the leads and power supplies and cords and test leads used to make opt for the plug and coil swap. Until I got my autel scanner-scope tablet. So incredibly easy to use and set-up. Fits in a modified dewalt drill case. Leads in zip locks just like Mike said in earlier vids. If it's not easy to set up, you really don't want to use it.

    Depending on experience and the vehicle, you could cut the diagnosis time even further by simply listening to the engine crank in clear flood mode (On a Honda though, you'd likely be better off pulling the fuel pump fuse to prevent the engine from starting). "No tools required" diagnoses are the quickest of all. Either way, the scope capture provides visual confirmation to the customer of the engine mechanical issue.

      Hey Joseph, very true. An experienced ear can tell you a lot about what's going on. That's hard to share with a customer though. I'd prefer to show them the labscope capture and say "hey, see this? One's missing, there's your misfire" ;)

    Thank you, Mike, for your time and effort explaining such case study.
    I have a question if you don't mind, and I'd grateful if you give me hint, link, or document to get more basis.
    You said: broken plug (for not being torqued) causes internal damage to the cylinder/piston > leading to lean-burn condition. Why?
    and why does lean mixture burn valve(s)?

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ma ker, thanks for watching! Lean=hot. A lean burning engine will cause cylinder temp to increase. If the plug isn't torque, a/f mix can escape past the plug. The plug will get overheated because it's not secured in the head transferring heat. Does that explain it a bit?
      Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

    • @maker9594
      @maker9594 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thank you for your concern and reply.
      1. I got this: when the plug is not torqued > mixture escaped, but why does the plug overheat then? (there is no combustion because there is no compression!)
      2. I know that st. mix has the optimum comb. temp. and o/p power. By logic, if we enrich the mix > we got more fuel > higher comb temp, increased imep, and eventually more power. How lean mix do rich mix's job? correct me if I am wrong.
      3. If I postulate that lean leads to more heat, why does it burn valves? what is the concept?
      Thank you again, Mike.

    Good info but a bit misleading Mike. With the scenario here, a seasoned tech would have known very quickly when starting the vehicle that there was a compression problem and you could likely skip checking fuel and ignition first.

    The replaced plug and coil issue emphasizes the importance of thoroughly interviewing the customer as to the history of the vehicle, not that you should always trust them.
    For the sake of discussion, I would suggest that the burnt valve may be the result of damage incurred prior to the valve adjustment. The ground electrode on the plug didn't bare the appearance of having been subjected to prolonged high temperatures associated with a burnt valve. They seem to often fail during a particularly long, continuous, high speed trip where a small leak would most quickly escalate to catastrophic failure.
    Good video, Thanks.

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Fascist Pedant, a thorough interview is key!!! Could not agree more. If only every customer would tell the truth. You could be right. Unfortunately, there's really no way to know for certain at this point. It was almost 40k since the valve adjustment, if that offers any credence to this.

    A clear flood cranking test would have proven a low compression cylinder without any equipment being used at all. Diagnosed in a matter of seconds . The cylinder number/s is irrelivant at the diagnosis stage.
    The relative comp test is great and so is the bore scope but for further diagnosis a leak down test next would condemn any other cylider/s that may be lower than expected and the fault would be easily found.

    I dont go for the labscope first to pinpoint a misfire.... if i suspect low compression i do a clear flood crank and listen to the engine,99 percent of the time you will hear it.And if it happens to be a cylinder under the intake im pullin it anyway to do a leakdown.Now i could see the value in that test if you had a misfire without a code that was due to low compression and you wanna know what cylinder is low in case its under and intake or not so you dont waste time.

    • @SuperMarioDiagnostics
      @SuperMarioDiagnostics 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's been proven time and time again. A good cranking amperage test doesn't guarantee good mechanical integrity, much less a clear flood

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jmccoy85, a trained early takes time. Not everyone can hear it either, especially a customer. I prefer to capture with the labscope and show them point blank that it's going to be a bigger job than what a simple misfire may normally be. This way, even for someone who's never seen a labscope before, it's plain as day. One of these things isn't like the other...haha!

    @parochial2356 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Mike - While it was faster [in this case] to do the cranking/scope test, the swap test would have stopped and directed you to a potential mechanical issue when you pulled the #1 plug and found the physical damage to it. I realize you did not know this beforehand. I'm not arguing here - a cranking test, to start with, would have led to a #1 cylinder issue and then resulted in the finding of damage to that plug. What I am saying is: if the vehicle was equipped with a coil over plug system [COP], easily accessible from the top, a coil swap may be faster [and a Tech would not need a 'scope [$$] to perform.] If you are faced with a rear bank misfire on a transverse V6, I agree that the making a cranking/scope test the test of choice would be faster in eliminating or verifying an compression/mechanical issue and on what [verifying on which] cylinder(s) the misfire was occurring on. In an easy to access a COP engine, the swap coil test maybe more efficient. Perhaps another video like this comparing the same approaches, but using a COP 4 cylinder engine? Thanks for hearing me out.

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, Thanks for watching! In this case, the customer changed out the coil and plug prior to bringing it in. He didn't inform of this until after I called and told him what was wrong with it. Happens far too often. Anyways, sure on a 4 cyl with the coils on top it may be quicker to switch. But there's issues with switching coils around too. Shorted coils could kill a PCM driver.There's a lot of variables.

    Last time I had a bunch of different misfire codes on my 99 Honda Civic EX, as in multiple cylinders, random misfires, I ended up doing a full tune up on it including valve clearances for nothing. The codes kept reappearing over and over again until that same tank of fuel was gone, and we refilled the tank at our usual gas station. (The wife was in a hurry one day and decided to try a cheap gas station on the way to work. Argggh!) Well, the car was approaching 75,000 miles so it wasn't a bad thing to do a tune up, but really! Is there any moderately priced and/or cheap test kit available to determine if your tanks gasoline quality is an issue? Thanks!

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark, ugh fuel issues can be such a headache! The only fuel testing that I do is water/ethanol. You pull fuel out and make 10 separate lines, once it settles if its standard E-10, you should see on line of water with 9 lines of fuel above it. I've done it in just about everything, including a water bottle when I was in a pinch haha!

    Question for you Mike eat all watching I am a DIYer and am trying to broaden my skills in the automotive realm and for the life of me can’t figure out the realities compression test, does this just involve the amp clamp and the scope or do you need a pressure transducer or am I just mixing up two different test? I have acquired the two channel pico scope which I think will accomplish most of what I need plus a 60amp amp clamp. Would this be enough to perform this test? Sorry for the beginners questions but I really want to learn more I find it so fascinating.

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey John, you would use an amp clamp around the battery cable. You goal is to measure current leaving the battery powering the starter. You'll want the big clamp for this. 200/2000amp clamp is what I use. No worries on the question man, that's how we learn! :)

      GoTech The cost isn’t a factor for my situation! I was given some info recently that the 8 channel was never meant to be for the automotive side and that it’s been lightly converted over and that is why it doesn’t have connect detect and higher voltage protection and requires more attenuators along with some other stuff. I just want to make sure I invest my money right so a year from now I don’t regret spending $7000 on the master kit
