    Thank you! I had a 2013 Nissan Versa come into the shop with a P0705: Trans Range Switch code. The scan tool showed the switch working correctly. I hooked up my Pico and 5 minutes later I knew with 100% certainty that the switch had failed! This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels, Mike!

    This is the first time I’m watching your video and it’s great. I really hope the guys that take there cars to a repair shop and believe diagnosing should be free goes to show it’s time precision and skill just to diagnose today’s car. It’s also great to see diy viewers getting into cars.

      So charging for our time for diagnostics is the step towards fixing after three other shops couldnt.... didn't try to pretend. Now I've more issues along with the original. I don't own a shop that is perfect and is always new cars but my world is included to everyone's cars.... regradless of make or models. But I don't do restoration and no longer do carbs. So yeah.... diagnostic is not just a free thing. I don't assume. I won't sell you something. If I don't know... I send you off to someone else that does. Don't advise for many to just place parts or spend half the day to investigate where a shorted wire is. (Can bus).... can be a real issue in the original versions of the can systems. Tracking a short to ground iis offen si much easier than finding a short to power. Right? THATS when your cars dies.... BUT ONLY 3 TIMES randomly in the last 6 months. Do not ask me why!.... you've had Auto zillion part store clear your codes 14 times and the data Iooking at is.... you had 5 miles.

    I think the reason why we’re not using the scope is because we have to learn it on the job by ourselves. Really sad cause I’ve been a post office mechanic and they used to fly us to school in Oklahoma for free training. But the newer Venice’s we need the scanner for is mostly out Chrysler pro master vans. And there the biggest pieces of junk in the world. Already trans solonoid problems less than 6,000 miles it’s all plastic parts? For the most part the code readers get the job done with no need to pull up and run oscilloscope tests. We still use the parts replacement method. Works as well as a scanner really? So think about your ideas of trying to up sell you snap on scope products . I haven’t bought into the bull yet. But your videos are great and your a grest person for instructing us . I guess there is sum hope for the USA automotive field. Missing the model T

      Hey Mark, thanks for watching! Sad to hear about the ProMaster vans...ugh! When working on similar models all the time you have to do what works and what is efficient for you. This car had been to the dealer already...multiple times with no fix. A scope was necessary to accurately diagnose this thing...but it's an anomaly really. That's why it makes such a good lesson. Here's what can happen and the tools you need to properly diagnose and fix it right the first time. This is the type of car that earns you a customer for life.

    I use a snap-on vantage ultra the most. Occasionally I will break out my desk top scope. The Vantage has a scope built into it along with a database of pretty much everything on the road it has all the sensors and switches each one has pages of test to do and known good values for them along with the location and wiring diagrams of all the plugs. It’s the 2nd vantage I’ve owned. I had a first generation that I used for years until I got great tread in and deal on the new one. I couldn’t resist 25% off.

    Great Information, Mike. This video is well needed due to a lot of techs didn't jump on the Lab Scope bandwagon back 20+ years ago like some of us did.
    Most of the training I see (and also present) are about taking the tech already using a Lab Scope up another notch. This video is GREAT for getting a tech going on the Lab Scope usage. THUMBS UP

    A great "real world" video...about everything that could go wrong....went wrong. But yet you never lost it.     As a young man - I always made my own repairs on my vehicles. Now that I am older, now 57 yo, I make a much better paycheck - SO - though I know how to troubleshoot - I now will take to trusted technicians and just pay them. I do believe that I would greatly enjoy a picoscope to use for accurate diagnosis of engine malfunctions - however - unless I was - as yourself - repairing other customers vehicles for a living, I can still make many repairs myself on my own vehicles without the cost of a lab scope. Once in a while , I get bit by replacing a part which probably did not need replacing. The modern tools are very nice to have BUT , they are expensive to own to just make repairs on your own vehicles - which is one reason among many why the modern mechanical technician has a much higher shop rate - he needs to make a higher rate just to pay for the tools needed to properly diagnose engine malfunctions. Just my opinion - but - there is validity to this train of thought.

      Hey Cory, diagnostics can be fun...or they can be a huge headache that keeps you up at night. Personally, I like a challenge, that's why I don't pay anyone to work on my stuff. I can see why many people should though! You train of thought makes sense. Everything automotive has increased, sales prices, tools prices, shop labor rate, technicians wage and the expectation of the technician. It all makes sense.

    Great video and thanks for sharing your other followers camshaft reluctor wheel findings. It was helpful to connect the scope to the mechanical failure of his reluctor wheel! I just picked up a hantek as well as the pico costs are way out of budget.

    I work as a Porsche tech. and whenever I have seen those trigger points on the cams broken or bent is when someone removes the cam cover with the engine still in the vehicle. The skinny trigger point gets caught on the cover during removal or installation. There’s very little room to work with in that area and if you’re not aware of those trigger wheels it’s very easy to do.
    Sometimes you get lucky and can bend them back into place.

    What does the pico offer as an advantage over the snap on scanner as a DSO? Our shop needs a scope as well as a new scanner, wondering if we can get two birds with one stone.

      Nick, the PICO interface is much easier to use. The Snap-on scope in the Modis and Verus are ok. They both can and will get the job done. What I would suggest is getting your hands on a PICO to try it out. At a show or another shop or something....sometimes it's nice to have 2 tools. The PICO to scope the output and the scan tool to command it on and off. If your using your scanner as a scope at that point, it's not possible.

      Nick Cove try get a GDS scan . It is a two way scanner plus 4 channel scope.

      Hey Rick! You're right, at times I was struggling getting that switch in. Things like, getting the scope stuff out and set up did take time, but I think I proved the point that it doesn't take THAT much time, right? My goal was to do it all real world. Show you guys it doesn't take 3 hours to set up the scope to prove a failure. Thanks for sticking with it and taking the lessons away. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!

    I never would've guessed that the Dodge Dart has Hyundai-Kia parts. I always thought it was a German-based car, seeing as how the wheels are held on with bolts instead of studs and nuts. You fared better than I would with that trans. range switch replacement; I'm sure I would have ended up cutting myself on something and spilled some blood on camera!

      The Dart is based on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, an Italian car. I think most European cars use bolts instead of nuts for wheels.

    I think that noise on the Jeep TPS was extraneous noise the leads were picking up from something in the shop. You'll notice it appeared in the flat line reading too. 20' of leads connected without a shielded connector let's in a bunch of rf type noise at the connection. Good video though, not trying to insult you, just trying to add some personal experience from my time using a scope for much weaker signals. BTW, that glitch seemed to occur at precise 20 second intervals.

    This comment will not involve any ball busting due to the amount of brake cleaner fumes I purposely inhaled with breakfast this morning. I sewed a pocket on to my Wells t-shirt with some leftover spandex I had. I repurpose split crotch yoga pants, it's my way of giving back the environment since I don't drive a Prius. haha Nice job Mike!

    Hantek makes a fantastic scope for the $. Their 2D82 is a PERFECT garage scope. Small, durable, decent power (80Mhz range), Scope/DMM/AWG, portable (rechargeable 18650s), connects to PC via USBC, has good features on PC software as well as onboard scope (many auto diagnostic tools). I got the 2D72 before I saw the 2D82 and it's been great to me but definitely would have gone for the 2D82 if I saw it. And it still only costs about $200

      @@GoTechTraining I really think so. And when I said "auto" I should have clarified. I meant automobile, though "automatic" still applies - as I meant "automatic automobile diagnostics tools". There's a pretty large menu with shortcuts to many different modes to easily diagnose vehicle electronics. I probably sound like a spokesman for Hantek but aside from owning the 2D72 scope, I have zero affiliation. I've just been impressed with it and think the 2D82 looks like an absolutely ideal automobile scope. And is a great price (relative to scopes). If you do end up picking one up, I'd love to hear your opinion, as I'm barely even a weekend warrior compared with you being a knowledgeable professional. I'm curious how useful it would actually be for you. Great channel by the way. You're sharing a ton of great information

      Bran onymous Hanteck is kinda a budget scope and not shielded I wouldn’t waste my money on it. They did steal the good known wave forms from pico too. It’s good to get it into your box if needed but pico aren’t that expensive considering

    I have one, I rarely use it because I use faster methods, if I can't achieve my goal with the fast way I will jump to the scope, same for r&r I'll do it with experience first, them if in certain time I just can't r&r I will look up the r&r service manual.

    What I’ve learned owning a 3.6 pennastar engine is never get a magnet near the magnetic reluctor wheel on back of cams Right by back spark plug tubes

    Fuel level gauge signal is weighted over time so the meter does not jump with each wave in the tank. It might trigger a code but not really a functional trouble.

    Looks like the computer expects make before break on the switch. This repair did stop the problem, right? You might want to emphasize that mechanical switches are inherently noisy. Contact bounce is common with any switch opening or closing. I build microcontroller based escape room props and I usually code in a settling time of 100mS to debounce switches. It might not need that much time, but it works and maximizes the usable life if the switch. Customers are pretty rough on pushbuttons.

    I had the PRNDL switch on my 2001 GMC Duramax go rogue over time. The incipient failures resulted in two tow homes.
    Finally got bad enough the truck was throwing codes. All around 299k miles. Early GMCs had the switch mounted where it would load up with mud behind it, like mine. Later models it is internal to the trans. Scope would have been nice to have, still need it for other issues...

    Ummm, shouldnt the question be "why dont you use it every day?" ANSWER: some days i do power steering hoses or brakes. And lets be straight up, some mkechanical issues can be converted to a waveform and dissected (such as running compression tests, you can see clogged catalytic converters, valves not opening on time, you can even use it with a transducer to look at fuel pressure regulators, AND injectors under-performing. Its all about the wave forms). Now i will watch the vid.

    Just re-watching this. Did you ever take the Range Position Sensor apart to confirm damage? A scope is all well and good, but were the copper traces worn out? Dirt build-up? Bent contact? Since I've been learning more, physical evidence takes a priority for customers. Most could care less about my fancy tools. I care, but they want to see it lol.

    Great video, the throttle body was dropping voltage before the accelerator was pressed if you watch when you first hooked up, the throttle being pressed was coincidental to the fault repeating as it was already appearing when it was at closed position, probably a hairline crack in the power track of the circuit board. Not trying to be clever bro.

    I'm curious as to why you used the Picoscope instead of the 4 channel on the Snap-on scanner?

      Hey Chris, I prefer the Pico because it's easier to use and manipulate. The Snap-on's is ok, but the Pico is nicer. Use them side by side sometime and tell me what you think. I'd be willing to be that I already know your answer.

There's a pretty good deal on the new Zeus but I believe a well kitted pico scope and a lower model scanner would come to less. I do like the guided testing of the Zeus though from the demo I got.

    We don't use scopes at my place of employment because the owner is to cheep and uses the cover your ass process to validate the charge . I have my own scope and use it as much as I can in my home situation as much as I can but most of the time I'm working on fully mechanical deasiel tractors . I try to convince the owner that the scope process is good and the value to the customer is worth the learning time

      Hey thank you very much! Sure, they could be shorted together or intermittent opens. Sometimes when scoping ill watch the signal right out of the sensor and then also at the module and make sure they match 100%.

    @6:20 that's a familiar scope. Hantek 1008, pretty bad equipment, but does the job when you can't afford or justify any better. With it I've managed to positively identify faults I would not have been able to without it, it also allows me to learn by doing without spending far too much. Not bad for an investment of less than €50.

    I here cars are becoming more sophisticated , and now there joining can bus to eithernet? Am I gonna have to retool again?

      Yes, Ethernet is already here on some models. Fortunately we still have the same OBDII connection...but I have a feeling we will need to expand our tooling eventually to capture these super high speeds of communication.

    Mike, Can i get the same results with an old Snap on Modis. I really have a problem zooming in. Granted I just picked up the unit trying to learn but everyone uses the Pico on You Tube which they just zoom in on everything with a mouse click. Thanks

      Mugsmydog, You can do similar with the Modis. It can give you good patterns, I just find it harder and more cumbersome to use than the PICO.

    Could be easier to backprobe at the control unit initially if it is more accessible and wiggle test the harness down to the switch to see if there are any harness faults present also?

    hi Mike im working on a 2004 mustang 3.0 w 3 timing chains, w very low vaccum reading, good catalytic not stuck open EGR, trying to get a good known pattern sample on crank/cam correlation, unfortunately ONLY HAS ONE CAM SNR, i will apreciate if u can get me a good known pattern.

      All-Data subscription for single-car DIY 2002 PT Cruiser is worthless in many respects. Inconsistent presentation, poor search function and lots of missing information. "We only use OEM information. What you're looking for isn't available." This trying to find info on headlight housing removal. This is an OBD-II vehicle. Try to find useful All-Data information on crank-no-start.

      No Zeus for me. Not worth the $$$ over the Verus. I have played with one, but never the scope, so I can't say how it stacks up against PICO.
